Teams will now be able to book the facility for practice, and Allen even came up with the idea of a ball return tube so batters can pass the balls back easier without coming down to the pitching machine. “It turned out really well,” said Allen, who said he could not have accomplished the project without the grant from Meadow Ridge Rotary Club. “It’s state-of-the-art,” said Dave Clayton, president of RMMSA. “Jeff put his heart and soul into this, did it all himself,” he added. ity, and over the next few weeks will be donating $100,000 to facilities that need building or updating. “Stuff that’s going to keep the kids off the street and into something positive,” said rotary president Lynda Lawrence, who added it was a no-brainer for the organization to give Allen a grant for the project. The rotary club is also involved in a duck race in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Haney, and are striving to raise $100,000 for local youth groups by selling 10,000 ducks that will participate in a race down the Alouette River on July 31. Money for sports facilities and equipment is not often easy to come by, and the Ridge Meadows Minor Softball Association (RMMSA) is grateful a community group was able to help them out with some much needed funds. “I went to the Meadow Ridge Rotary Club,” said RMMSA vice-president Jeff Allen, “and I received a grant.” With that grant he was able to update the association’s batting cage so it can be used year-round and provide the team with a better level of training. There are currently 72 teams in the association, with 800 athletes ranging from T-ball to junior softball. “We also received a lot of donations over and above,” said Allen, and items such as the paint and metal cladding were donated. “It used to be just a chain-link building with a roof on top,” he added.
