WHITEHEAD, Herb Jan 12, 1959 - Apr 11, 2012

Herb was born in Burnaby, raised in Boundary Bay and lived his adult life in North Delta. He lived and died courageously. Herb graduated from South Delta Secondary in 1976 where he demonstrated his gift and passion for sport. He swam competitively and played soccer, rugby and lacrosse at an elite level. Herb loved the outdoors and was well suited to his work as deckhand and cook on the tugs. He worked for the Washington Marine Group on ocean tugs which took him to the Gulf of Alaska and places on the BC Coast that few have seen. Life on the tugs afforded Herb much time off which he used to his benefit; taking up whitewater kayaking, telemark skiing and wood working. Herb, with his distinctive red beard, could be seen paddling Hell’s Gate, Capilano Canyon and Class IV rapids in Chile and Costa Rica. During the winter season he could be found carving turns on mountains all over BC and camping in his VW Van at the base of the hills. He took pleasure in his carving and wood turning which he generously shared with friends and family. Herb was predeceased by his mother Joyce in 2007 and father Bert in 2011. He is survived by his siblings; Sam (Sue), Jake (Lee), Cathy, Janet, and nieces and nephews; Sally, Eric (Michelle), Caia (Trevor), Kyle, Shane and Ciara (Matt) and grandnieces Milla and Paige. Herb’s family would like to thank his friends, team mates, neighbours and Health Care professionals for the companionship, support and understanding they gave our brother over the years. Please join us to celebrate his life on Friday, August 10 at 1:30pm at the Celebration Hall in Mountainview Cemetery, 5455 Fraser Street.
