Ladner residents may soon have one less place to buy stamps and send parcels. Canada Post announced this week it is considering closing the retail portion of the Ladner post office on the corner of Delta Street and 48th Avenue. Canada Post spokesperson John Caines said if the closure goes ahead, the building would still operate as a letter carrier depot but would no longer be open to the public. “Our business is changing quite a bit,” he said, adding the rising popularity of online shopping and a decrease in carrier mail has forced Canada Post to look at how it operates in order to ensure longterm stability. If the closure goes ahead, Caines said residents will still have the postal outlet in the Pharmasave in Ladner Harbour Centre. “We feel our customers will be well served,” he said. The union representing postal workers is upset at the proposed closure. “The Ladner post office has been at that location for approximately 50 years and they have

served customers from that location for many years,” said Stephen Gale, president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers Fraser Valley West. “This is a blow to the community of Ladner.” Gale said the two employees at the post office will have to move to other locations if the closure goes ahead. “The two employees that work there have put in over 25 years each with Canada Post and they both live in Ladner,” he said. “For them to continue their employment with Canada Post, they will have to commute to either Richmond, Vancouver, North Surrey or Langley if they can obtain a position at one of these locations.” Caines confirmed the two employees do have job security should the post office close. Gale said the move will result in longer lines at the remaining postal outlet in Ladner. Canada Post launched a public consultation process Wednesday. Residents will have 30 days to comment on the proposed closure. Comments can be submitted online at www.canadapost. ca/retail or by mail to: Retail Feedback, 2701 Riverside Drive, Suite N1020C, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0B1.

Glendinning pleads guilty to sex-related charges BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

A former Tsawwassen resident has pleaded guilty to several sexrelated charges. On Wednesday afternoon, Jamieson Richard (Rick) Glendinning entered guilty pleas

in Surrey Provincial Court on three counts of indecent assault — two against other males and one against a female. The incidents took place in Delta and Surrey during the 1970s. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to appear in

court. An arrest warrant was issued for Glendinning last spring after be failed to show up for court. He was eventually spotted in Australia last fall, arrested and returned to the Lower Mainland in October. Glendinning was first arrested

by Delta police and charged in September 2010. He was arrested again in November of that year after more alleged victims contacted investigators. At the time, police said his alleged victims were all in elementary and high school at the time of the assaults.

Glendinning, 63, had a decadelong affiliation with Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association between 1985 and 1995. The judge in the case ordered a pre-sentence report and a psychiatric assessment. Sentencing is scheduled for March 8.

FHA declares flu health hazard

Masks are now a requirement at long-term care facilities as flu-related hospitalizations in region soar The Fraser Health Authority took an extra step in an attempt to reduce the spread of influenza this week by declaring the virus a health hazard. On Tuesday, the health authority’s chief medical officer, Dr. Paul Van Buynder, declared the current level of influenza virus circulating within Fraser Health communities a health hazard under the provisions of the Public Health Act. The move allows the health authority to take additional measures to safeguard the health and well being of the most vulnerable community members. Already this year, 19 Fraser Health long-term care facilities have reported flu outbreaks. While none of those facilities are in Delta, residents of local facilities are still at risk. The flu usually does not result in any serious health concerns for healthy adults, however it can have significant consequences for the elderly and people with compromised immune systems, as well as young children.

The health authority has seen twice as many outbreaks as were reported in each of the last two years.

In addition, Fraser Health is seeing flu-related emergency room visits at the highest level in years.

With the app, mobile device users also have access to a full range of information about Delta’s residential garbage and recycling programs, including the Green Can program and the new Mattress Recycling Voucher program. Other special features of the app include a search function that lets residents

quickly determine how to dispose of and recycle a variety of items as well as a report-a-problem function to report missed collections, illegal dumping and more. “The new mobile app is a great way to help residents remember their collection date and also connect with us by reporting missed collections or finding the latest information about our collection program,” said

Mayor Lois Jackson. “We want to make recycling and green can collection as easy as possible to encourage greater participation and we hope this app will help with that.” The app is free to download and is currently available for Apple and Android devices. flu shot this year, including staff, volunteers and visitors, will be required to wear a mask and practice

stringent hand hygiene during their time at the facility. The health authority is also reminding visitors to avoid going to residential and assisted living facilities if they are feeling unwell. “We are asking our patients, visitors and staff to take these extra steps to protect their family members, patients, residents and loved ones from this highly contagious and serious virus,” Van Buynder said. The health authority reported this flu season has seen more than fours times the number of flu-related hospitalizations from longterm care facilities than a typical year, and three times the number of deaths associated with influenza among residents of residential care facilities than for the last three years combined. Fraser Health is reminding the public it’s never too late to get a flu shot and the immunization is free for children under five and people in their households. For more information about the flu shot visit www.fraserhealth.ca/ your_health/immunization/ flu_shots.

Delta police issue reminder to drivers after experiencing spike in vehicle break-ins Delta police sent out a reminder this week after seeing an increase in vehicle break-ins in the community. Police are reminding the public to: • Always lock your vehicle when you leave it. Whether you are in a public place or at your residence, locking your vehicle creates an immediate obstacle and possible deterrent to potential thieves. • Do not leave any valuable property in view of potential thieves. This includes electronic devices, purses, wallets, sunglasses, etc. • Do not leave loose change visible to potential thieves.

A proposed federal bill could leave Delta on the hook for the Tsawwassen First Nation’s expanding water and sewer needs. Introduced in the Senate last year, the Safe Drinking Water for First Nations Act (Bill S-8) is aimed at developing better access to safe drinking water and ensure the effective treatment of wastewater and the protection of sources of drinking water on First Nation lands. The federal government has exclusive jurisdiction over standards for drinking water and sewage treatment on reserves. as well as enforcement of standards, to third parties, which could include provincial and local governments. Metro Vancouver has already written to federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan with concerns about the cost implication for cities. A report to Metro’s aboriginal relations committee notes local governments were not consulted. The report also notes there’s a lack of clarity whether the regional district will be required to increase its level of service to accommodate all growth and development on First Nation lands. The proposed bill would apply to reserve lands, but treaty First Nations lands would also have the ability to opt in, something that could have ramifications for the Corporation of Delta. The municipality has been at odds with the TFN about Delta providing the infrastructure to service the massive residential and commercial growth planned in the next few years. Delta council recently agreed it will not be selling the South Delta force main to Metro Vancouver to help with the sewer capacity needs of the TFN, which offered Delta $3 million in compensation. Last year former TFN chief Kim Baird wrote to Greg Moore, chair of the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District, inquiring about the Delta-owned sewer main that runs from the Annacis Island treatment.

Support available for caregivers Delta Caregivers’ Network offers series at Delta Hospice centre in Ladner BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

The Delta Caregivers’ Network is beginning a new series at the end of the month that provides education and support. The series, with weekly meetings at Delta Hospice in Ladner, is for family caregivers, those who are unpaid and looking after a

friend or family member. “We talk a lot about the stress of being a caregiver,” said Laurie Pettman, one of three facilitators with the volunteer organization. She said people often take on caregiver duties while not realizing they’ve become one. They can become overwhelmed and exhausted and don’t know where to get help.

The education portion of the series will cover topics like communication techniques, role and lifestyle changes, accessing and using community resources, and legal and financial issues. Pettman said everything is confidential in the group. “They’re welcome to just come and sit and listen if they’re not comfortable. Some people are sort of intimidated by the idea of a group so we try and make it as comfortable as possible.” Ladner’s Sheila Lister first came to a Delta Caregivers’ Network session in 2010. “It’s been an absolute life saver for me,” she said. Lister, who’s taking care of her husband, said the meetings provided plenty of information regarding contacts and things you need to know, particularly legal items. “You’re a caregiver and you’re swamped with day-

to-day things, (so) you don’t always take the time to think about items like that. So I found out most of the things I needed to do through caregivers.” Like Lister, Boundary Bay’s Nick Janzen continues to attend ongoing caregivers meetings. “It’s good to know that you’re not alone,” he said. Janzen, who’s providing care for his wife, said he looks forward to the meetings. “It’s sort of a relief valve in a way. You don’t even have to say anything but just to be with the same kind of people.” The series starts Thursday, Jan. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. and runs once a week for eight weeks. The cost is $25. To register, call Pettman at 604-943-3921 or the Centre for Supportive Care at 604-948-0660. The network also offers ongoing monthly support group meetings.

Dotto helps harness the power of social media Technology expert leads seminar hosted by chamber Ladner’s Steve Dotto will present a seminar about social media next Tuesday in Delta. Titled Harnessing the Power of Social Media, the seminar will be hosted by the Delta Chamber of Commerce. Dotto will dive headfirst into the impact social media and technological change is having on all aspects of our society. The seminar is designed for a business audience, but the public would find it as valuable, Dotto told the Optimist. “The nature of social media, the Internet and technology impacts both our home and professional lives equally. So it will resonate with most people I believe,” he said. Technology has created a significant shift in how different generations think, act and work. “I believe social media has had a profound impact on our society, as such it most certainly is probably the most impactful communications technology we have currently,” he said. Dotto will be entertaining, thought-provoking and open people’s eyes to these differences, according the

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW What do you know, it looks like it was coal dust after all. Last fall we published a number of letters, including a couple from Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, about the “black stuff ” that was blanketing cars, patio furniture and pretty much anything else left outdoors in Tsawwassen, particularly in the westernmost part of town. It looked like a duck and walked like a duck, but the powers that be were reluctant to identify it as a duck. This assertion seemed curious given the presence of North America’s busiest coal port on the community’s doorstep. Then later in the fall Huntington wrote a second letter after receiving word from Westshore Terminals, operator of the coal port, that a certain percentage of the dust, as much as 20 per cent in some cases, was indeed coal. It was hardly a startling revelation, but it was nice to hear it confirmed nonetheless. Huntington’s letter also included news that substantial upgrades would be made to the dust control systems at the coal port. This week Dennis Horgan of Westshore Terminals came before Delta council to outline the improvements that will be carried out this year, work that will total a not-so-insignificant $7 million. It might appear strange to applaud a company for carrying out needed mitigation measures, for merely acting as a responsible corporate citizen, but in this day and age when the wishes of the little guy aren’t routinely heeded, it was heartening to see Westshore commit to the costly improvements. It could have buried its head in the sand, or the dust for that matter, and stuck to a line others were shopping about how the mysterious black stuff wasn’t coal dust, but it stepped up, admitted responsibility and is taking action. To be fair, not all the black soot that’s landing on property in Tsawwassen could possibly be attributed to activities at the coal port given everything else we’re putting into the airshed these days. It would defy logic if some of that unwelcome coating weren’t from the emissions of ships, trucks and trains that frequent this area, among other potential pollutants in our midst. Even if the coal port is more than likely just part of the problem, and thus can only remedy what’s in its control, it’s still encouraging to see the operator take ownership of the issue and commit millions to combat it. It would be even better if this corporate responsibility thing became contagious around here.

Councillors issued challenge for Tour de Tunnel time trial DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT During the Christmas break I drove into Vancouver through the George Massey Tunnel. The weather was decent, there was minimal traffic and significant time was saved. The first business day of 2013 changed all that. A provincial delegation has attended Delta and adjacent municipalities seeking input on the future of the tunnel, but as has been stated many times before, any crossing improvement is likely decades away. Kudos to the provincial government for visiting Delta for input, but it strikes me our own council could initiate a similar forum seeking short-term solutions. The last council initiative on tunnel improvement was in the early 1980s resulting in the counterflow lane. I stand to be corrected, but none of our local elected officials use

the tunnel daily as a commuter, therefore do not share our anxiety and frustration. I appreciate they have much on their plates with numerous issues and committee time, as well as looming land use hearings, but seeing and experiencing makes believers of us all. I’m offering a friendly challenge to one of our municipal politicians by organizing the Tour de Tunnel time trial. It involves one of our leaders with a sense of adventure to debark by car from municipal hall at 7:45 a.m. on any Monday in the next 30 days. They would navigate Highway 17 through the tunnel using the right lane and exit onto the Steveston Highway overpass westbound, make a left turn at the west end of the overpass and proceed southbound through the tunnel on the way back to municipal hall. Off rush hour this is a 10-minute trip. Should he/she return to the hall in less than 40 minutes, I will donate $500 to a charity of their choice in their name. All I ask is that if the experience is noteworthy, he/she initiates some dialogue with our beleaguered Delta drivers to seek input for any short-term improvements. Delta’s traffic safety committee

might have a role in this as well. A major bottleneck northbound in the morning is the Steveston Highway overpass, which backs traffic into the tunnel and slows/stops the right lane. I am a believer in the collective wisdom of a large group of people; surely there are other thoughts and ideas worth considering. I would like to think Delta council with staff support could engage in discussions with Richmond council. Surrey council could add its weight to discussions as its constituents are part or the problem and encounter lengthy delays at the tunnel, which will only get worse. To loosely paraphrase a famous quote, it is far better to take on a challenge with the risk of an occasional setback rather than be one of those who are afraid of failure so do nothing. This is a decades-old problem. We need an advocate who will work with adjacent municipalities and put pressure on our provincial government. Any takers? Let’s initiate some dialogue and perhaps improve a vexing issue. As they say, timing is everything and we have a provincial election in May. And a good night to you, councillors.

January 18, 2013 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Revisions don’t suit neighbourhood

Editor: The majority of residents in the Marina Garden neighbourhood are relatively new to Ladner. We love our neighbourhood and consider Ladner one of the most livable communities in the Lower Mainland. We commend Mr. Chan, the landowner, for providing a neighbourhood, to this point in time, that most communities in the Lower Mainland would envy. Most of them don’t know we exist. We are a single-family community with some townhouse development. In other words, we are what Ladner is and we want to keep it that way. Unfortunately, a development application has been submitted that is completely different to the development plans under which we understood were to be followed when we purchased our residences.

The development application is almost a carbon copy of the proposal submitted at a Delta council workshop last October. The residents of the Marina Garden neighbourhood were informed of the contents of this proposal and at their AGM last October directed the executive to meet with council to express their concerns: 1. Density — Almost four times what is currently present in the neighbourhood is totally unacceptable. 2. Building structures and height — Five-storey apartment buildings in the area are unacceptable. A development of this nature does not exist in the residential areas of Ladner. The absence of this is possibility the very reason why we moved here. 3. Parking — The proposal is a disaster. 4. Traffic problems

— Ladner, you have no idea what’s in store for all of us. To this point in time, the following has happened: 1. Our residents packed the council chambers last October to deliver the “message.” Council is well aware of the problem and the potential injustice to the residents and to Ladner in general. 2. Both MGEL and Polygon Developments were well aware of our position yet they have submitted a plan for development that we feel will be strongly challenged by the majority of the residents. 3. The executive will be meeting in the very near future to plan and execute aggressive strategies. If the developers think the majority of our neighbourhood will sit idly by and watch the very character of our neighbourhood destroyed, they are in for a big surprise. We will fight this

proposal with vigour and we expect to win. Stan Lawson President Marina Garden Homeowners Association

Justice for all Jan. 21 is the Rev. Martin Luther King Day in the U.S. I was 11 when King was assassinated. Being a keen student of history, the stories of the desegregation of public schools and the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott were part of my teenage years as were the protest songs of Pete Seeger. King is remembered for his call to non-violence protest: “We will be guided by the highest principles of law and order... the deepest principles of Christian faith. Love must be our regulating ideal...” I was saddened to realize King’s “Letter from the Birmingham Jail” was a response to moderate white Christian leaders who criticized his call for integration, telling him to wait patiently while labelling his actions “unwise and untimely.” With grace he responded... “that

injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality...” Idle No More, a protest movement comprised of members of Canada’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities along with their supporters, has been in the news. Complex issues around treaty rights exist in Canada. Underlying those complex issues is fear of change and hurt. I’ll pray for the leadership of Canada to be guided by the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, who inspired by his commitment to Jesus understood what we will need to comprehend and act upon in Canada — that we are bound together all of us by a mutuality that requires justice. August arrives in Ladner Singer/songwriter trio to play show next Friday at Genesis Theatre BY

t’s not summer yet but August is coming to Ladner next week. Made up of three West Coast singer/songwriters, Rae Armour, Beverley Elliott and Linda Kidder, August will play a show at Genesis Theatre next Friday as part of the venue’s live@5005 concert series. The members, each with a successful solo career, came together about six years ago. They were friends that would cross paths by seeing each other at shows. “It started when Rae just said, ‘Hey, why don’t we do a gig together one day?’” says Elliott. “We took our original songs and learned each others’ harmonies and then we expanded from there and started writing together and writing songs with contributions from all three of us,” she says. Having people to bounce things off and inspiring each other are some of the pros of being in a group, she notes. “I find things get done. Songs actually get finished. I start writing lots of songs on my own but when you have three of us there’s usually somebody who picks

up the creative energy ball again and says, ‘Let’s get that third verse’ or ‘Let’s finish it.’ That’s great.” Delegating different tasks is also a plus, Kidder says. “We each have our

strengths and we bring it to the table and it just works out so well.” For the upcoming show in Ladner, August plans on performing songs from its current album, The Sweetest

Day, unreleased tunes and likely songs from the members’ individual CDs. “I’d say it’s a combination. We’ve got the ones that are tried and true that we love and know will get a

big response,” says Elliott. “We do have a couple of new ones up our sleeve, mostly in the comedy vein. We’ve been writing some funny stuff.” The three singer/song-

writers also tell stories about their lives during the course of a show. The stories are important to the show, says Kidder, noting they can set up a song by giving a background to it or help to explain a meaning. Elliott says the stories resonate. “We speak to things that are kind of universal truths for women of our age.” She also notes stories can help disarm the distance between the audience and the performer on stage. “You kind of just feel like you’re in a big living room talking to your friends.” The Sweetest Day combines a mixture of jazz, pop and roots. “We all brought our own flavour. Linda’s a bit more jazzy and Rae’s more pop. I’m maybe a bit more folk/country. We mix that all together and come up with our own sound,” says Elliott. The trio will be joined on stage in Ladner by jazz guitarist Daryl Jahnke. August performs at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., on Friday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Charlotte Diamond returns to Delta for two shows BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond certainly enjoys coming back to Delta. “I’ve always loved to come back. It just brings back really great memories,” said Diamond, a North Delta Secondary grad. She has two shows coming up in Delta, one at Genesis Theatre in Ladner on Sunday, Jan. 20 and another at North Delta Secondary on Saturday, Jan. 26. Diamond, a longtime Richmond resident, will be playing songs from her latest CD 24 Carrot Diamond, a best-of collection. She’ll sing songs in French, Spanish and English. Diamond, who said she’s a strong supporter of French immersion, said the joy of singing leads to a love of language.

Well known children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond is performing in Ladner on Sunday.

“The singing makes it so easy to get the flow of the language and the vocabulary,” she said. Diamond, who has a background in dance as well as singing, noted the audience would be encouraged to join in the fun at the upcoming shows.

“There’s a feeling of just getting everybody involved and singing. The songs are easy to sing and they’re very rhythmic.” Her son Matt, who sings and plays electric guitar, recently started performing with her. “I’m a real proud

momma, I definitely am. I love the sound of the harmonies.” Diamond has released 13 recordings and won multiple awards over her career, including a Juno for 10 Carrot Diamond in 1986. Diamond performs at Genesis Theatre on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. Her show at North Delta Secondary, 11447-82nd Ave., takes place Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. The shows are sponsored by the Delta School District. Tickets are $2 and on sale at local schools, including Ladner Elementary, Cliff Drive Elementary and South Park Elementary in South Delta as well as Chalmers, Devon Gardens, Richardson and Sunshine Hills elementary schools in North Delta. of its letter status

BY

BRENDAN MCALEER Optimist contributor

In the automotive world, adding a letter designation instantly tells people what you’re up to: if there’s a sinuous “S” on the back, expect sporty handling; if there’s an “E,” it’ll either stand for efficiency or you’ll be plugging your car into the wall. But perhaps nothing is as inspiring as the regal R — emblazoning the 18th letter of the alphabet on your machine is a bold move for any manufacturer to make. It signals an intent to mark out whatever’s behind the badge as something very special indeed, the alpha and omega of the model selected. Well, today’s Golf is brought to you by the letter R, and it’s the ultimate expression of the Teutonic hot hatchback. Design: Surprisingly, it’s a fourdoor. If you know your way around the VW car configurator, you might note the two-door GTi was previously king of the turbocharged hill over there, with the lightest weight and the highest performance. And while this über-racy hot hatchback is $10,000 more expensive than its entry-level cousin, you might not know it to look at it. Sure, there’s special 18-inch alloy wheels, a unique front and rear fascia and the aforementioned “R” badging, but overall things are quite subtle. Start thinking about what kind of hot-looking metal you can get yourself for almost $40K, and the Golf R doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. If you want to flash your cash, you’d be far better off in a Genesis Coupe, brightly-coloured Mustang or Camaro. Heck, for that kind of scratch, you can see your way into a BMW 3-Series. Then again, I’d like to think this is VW at its best. While Japanese and Korean manufacturers seem deadlocked in a competition to out-style each other with swoopy designs, restraint is a good thing. Yes, this car hauls. No, it doesn’t shout about it.

Environment: It’s practical too, with four-door ease of access and a big trunk. I mean, it is a Golf after all, and that makes it a Euro-sized family car. As a special model, you do get a few little touches not found on a regular GTi, like aluminum kickplates and some R-badging inside. Everything else, though, could be found on your average high-trim regular Golf. That means a clean, simplistic layout, uncluttered and spartan. The seats are comfortable and well-bolstered and free of tacky badging. The stereo is very good, but not thumping or blaring. In fact, the only un-subtle thing about this car is having to explain to someone why you paid so much for it: they’ll think you’re a pirate. It’s a Golf ARRRRR. Performance: Of course, you could always just take ‘em for a spin around the block. With a tuned up 2.0L stolen out of the Audi TT, a solid six-speed manual transmission and all-wheeldrive to harness every one of its 256 horses, the Golf R is sure to impress rightseat passengers with grip, grip, grip. At least, once you figure out how to get it off the line without stalling, that is. It’s not a great first impression, but it’s also not an inaccurate one – the Golf R is not a boy racer like its front-wheel-drive cousins. It’s grown-up, sensible, responsible: fast, but not Fast & Furious. Features: While its $39,675 price seems sky-high next to a regular GTi, the gap shrinks considerably when you start considering options. Namely, the Golf R doesn’t have any. It’s a fully-loaded model; pick your colour (grey, blue or black), and that’s it. No optional audio package, no extra navigation. Load up the base GTi, and the gap closes to right around $3,000 — for an extra 50hp and all-wheeldrive, that’s not bad. Green Light: All-wheel-drive grip;

mid-range power; comfortable and practical layout; king of the hill status. Stop Sign: Long first gear; big price tag; limited colour avail-

ability. The Checkered Flag: As you’d expect from something carrying an R-badge, it’s the ultimate expression of the Golf.

Volkswagen used restraint when designing the Golf R.

Pacers win Stebbings/Murray Cup in a romp Delta races out to big first quarter lead and never looks back in 75-45 win over South Delta in annual senior boys hoop clash BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Even the flu bug wasn’t going to prevent the Delta Pacers from winning the third annual Stebbings/Murray Cup in convincing fashion. The senior boys basketball team delivered the knockout blow early and cruised to a 75-45 victory over cross-town rival South Delta Sun Devils on Tuesday night in Tsawwassen. “We have all been sick and it’s been passing around among the team for the past couple of weeks,” said Pacers coach Matt McKay, who was looking forward to heading home and climbing into bed after his team’s impressive win. “Tonight, we weren’t happy settling for just being good enough. Offensive and defensively, we kept competing and executing at the level we expect. That was a real positive.” After two straight years of very competitive games, this one was all but over after one quarter as the Pacers raced out to a 22-8 lead then scored eight unanswered points to start the second. A 43-19 halftime advantage allowed McKay to go deep into his bench as his young squad continues to make significant strides. One night earlier, the Pacers hung tough with No. 2 White Rock Christian, falling 74-63. It was a performance that helped earned them honourable mention status in the latest provincial “AAA” rankings, while flooring a starting line-up that features three Grade 11s and two Grade 10s. They will face some huge tests again next week, starting on Tuesday when No.

5 Tamanawis Wildcats visits Ladner at 7 p.m. in Fraser Valley Southwest League play. They will then host the inaugural Bill Kushnir Memorial Tournament, with Port Moody’s Heritage Woods as their opening round opponent. Win that, and No. 1 ranked Yale awaits in the semi-finals. As for the Sun Devils, it’s shaping up as a challenging year for head coach James Johnston and his staff with just two players back who saw significant playing time a year ago – Nolan Sullivan and Gord Nicholson. Their roster doesn’t feature as single member of the championship football team that featured 31 players. The athletic talent pool simply isn’t deep enough at the Tsawwassen school for varsity teams to be competitive without kids crossing over to other sports. McKay knows the Sun Devils situation well, having taught at SDSS last year before coming to Delta. “Nolan Sullivan is a very talented kid and I thought Ryan Cowley did a good job on him,” he added. “As a team we also did a good job being aware where he was all the time.” Nicholson led the Sun Devils with a game-high 19 points. Sullivan added eight. Bowen Bakken paced a balanced Delta attack with 13 points. Andrew Jones had 12, as did Grade 10 Sam Evanson, who was praised by McKay for his play off the bench. Cowley chipped in with eight. The only thing that didn’t go right for the Pacers was Jones suffering a second quarter ankle sprain. McKay hopes his standout guard will be ready for next week’s tough schedule.

Ice Hawks cruise past Mission

GORD GOBLE

Delta Ice Hawks Brent Chreptyk nearly scores his third goal of the night in his team’s 6-2 victory over the Mission City Outlaws on Tuesday in Ladner. The Hawks travel to Ridge Meadows tonight.

Franklin and Stroup are first from Tunnel Town to reach jr. nationals

Rhys Gamache will be the third ever player from the Tunnel Town Curling Club to compete at the Canadian Junior Championships. The 20-year-old, who was featured in Wednesday’s Optimist, is headed to Fort McMurray next month as a member of Tyler Klymchuk’s rink from Langley. Back in 1986, Tunnel Town’s Graeme Franklin and Steve Stroup teamed up with a pair of curlers from the Richmond Winter Club to capture the junior provincials and represented B.C. in Red Deer. Franklin was the rink’s skip.

He went on to also become the only Tunnel Town curler ever to compete in the Labatt Brier, as a second for Ron Thompson’s rink out of the Vancouver Curling Club in 1988. The Brier that year took place in Chicoutimi, Quebec and was won by Alberta’s Pat Ryan. At the time, the 19-year-old Franklin was the youngest ever to compete at the senior men’s nationals. He more than held his own, tying Don Walchuk as the top second at the tournament.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The weeks ahead bring social joys, popularity, entertainment, light romance, group activities and wish fulfillment – in an even stronger dose than most Januaries/Februaries. Life seems worthwhile again! Though the pressure is off at work, bosses still favour you, so a moment of socializing with them (say Monday, Tuesday) can’t hurt. Sunday’s for shopping – early, before ten. Travel, paperwork, casual friends, errands and variety fill Monday/Tuesday – be curious. Head for home Wednesday eve to Friday: be sluggish, recuperate, nurture family. Romance crescendos Saturday. Taurus April 20-May 20: An ambitious month begins. Your energy and magnetism are tops Sunday, but there’s little worth doing. Charge after money and possessions Monday/Tuesday – a great two days for investments, wiping out debt and sensual gratification. Your career and social reputation face a lucky opening. Trips, errands, paperwork and casual friends/siblings fill Wednesday eve to Friday: good mixes with bad, so be on your toes. Legal and governmental zones might not go well, but your career faces even more opportunity, If you have an ambitious hunch, act on it without delay. Home, family Saturday. Gemini May 21-June 20: The weeks ahead feature intellectual activities, far travel, love and weddings, cultural projects, higher learning, religion, philosophy, insurance and statistics. The small of these will proceed swiftly, but the big is sluggish, will grow Jan. 30 onward. Retreat and rest Sunday: DON’T handle sharp equipment. Your energy, magnetism, sense of timing and effectiveness soar Monday/Tuesday: start new projects, declare your love, see and be seen (and heard!). Chase money Wednesday eve to Friday noon: open doors and barriers mingle: buy cautiously. Errands and friends, Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The month ahead features sex, intimacy, high finance (investments, debt, etc.) mysteries and research, health diagnosis, lifestyle changes, commitment and consequence. This area is super-charged now; testosterone is high; so is human attraction. You could be tempted to stray. Investing in (or researching in) your career can yield benefits. Sunday’s friendly, happy, but avoid practical goals. Retreat to rest, plan, and fulfill old obligations Monday/Tuesday: you might receive a “gift” for your charitable or spiritual efforts. Your energy and charisma soar Wednesday eve to Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The weeks ahead emphasize relationships, opportunity and opposition, negotiation, dealings with the public, relocation possibilities and fresh new horizons. You feel ambitious Sunday, but a nice rest will gain more. Your popularity rises Monday to Wednesday. Social delights, light romance, entertainment, optimism and wish fulfillment flow in. Someone you meet or woo could be a potential, viable life mate. Retreat Wednesday night to Friday: rest, contemplate, plan, be spiritual, charitable. Your energy, charisma and timing soar Saturday – approach someone to solve a problem. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sunday’s mellow, loving, but don’t start major projects – contemplate, or read. Be ambitious Monday to Wednesday – great luck accompanies you. A month of work and health concerns has just begun (Jan. 19) and this dovetails splendidly with your career, prestige and status desires. Monday/Tuesday (not so much Wednesday) are one of the prime intervals in this trend – if you work eagerly, you gain. Approach higher-ups with a plan or proposal those two days. Friends, popularity and optimism visit you Thursday/Friday. Retreat for some “down time” Saturday. Contemplate love barriers.

Jan. 20 - Jan. 26, 2013

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A month of romance, creativity, of pleasure, charming children and speculative urges starts now. Indulge some of those speculative urges – you’re on a winning streak! There will be a bump, especially around Jan. 30 (next week) – one that might raise the problem of money or unequal socio-economic positions. And in general, if you want to turn love into living (i.e., co-habitation) or marriage, you face problems involving domesticity: where you live, or step-kids, etc. Still, you could hardly pick a better time this decade, to love and mate! Monday/Tuesday show how/why. Lucky! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Until late February, examine your relationships and projects – jettison the old, stale and unworkable, to make room for the new little green shoots that you now must nurture. Err on the side of gentleness in this, for you are temperamental all January in domestic and other situations – “dumping someone” roughly can create a long-term enemy. At home, kindness is key. In gardening, go light on fertilizer. Sunday’s intriguing but without result. Sexual urges, mysteries, high finance, investments, fill Monday-Wednesday – luckily so! Mellow thoughts late week. Be ambitious Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead fill with casual friends, siblings, errands, short trips, communications, details, reports and paperwork. It’s a very busy but not terribly important time. Send “love letters” over the two weeks ahead, both literally and metaphorically (e.g., the right glance or tone of voice is a “letter” also). Tackle routine chores Sunday – nothing big. Relationships excite and are splendidly lucky Monday/Tuesday – be eager to join, diplomatic, flexible: others hold the power. Deeper themes – sex, intimacy, financial commitments – need caution late week. Mellow joy Saturday.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The month ahead features money and possessions. You have already experienced heightened money flows since late December: now these become more serious, as your “net worth” is affected. So it’s very important to stop useless, nervous or frivolous outflows, and to invest, if you do, carefully. The best time to invest for machinery, tools, work is Monday/Tuesday – two great days to apply for employment or begin a project, also. The best time for other types of investment (or reducing debt) is January 27. Sunday’s beautiful but useless. Relationships demand care Thursday/Friday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your energy, effectiveness, timing and charisma reach a yearly high over the next few weeks. Start important projects, see and be seen, vie for romance (one of the bigger ones of your life seems likely to arrive, or has arrived, between June 2012 and June 2013). Ask favours, they’ll be granted. Sunday’s for rest, period. Romance, a creative surge, charming kids, speculative success, fill a splendidly lucky Monday/ Tuesday (and Wednesday, but with little result). Tackle chores Thursday/Friday – keep an eye on safety. Relationships contain a hidden barrier Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Withdraw mildly now to late February. This is your recuperation time of year: rest, protect your health, contemplate where you stand now and make plans for future action. Be charitable, spiritual – it will come back to you. You feel like visiting or communicating Sunday: little result. Charge into domestic, real estate, gardening, nutrition, children, security and retirement zones Monday/Tuesday – you’ll succeed, in major ways! Romantic notions, creative urges and pleasure drives swell Thursday/Friday, but you might be wise to let these remain notions only. Tackle chores Saturday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 604-886-4808
