GEERE, Gillian
It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of “Gill,” beloved wife, mother and grandmother who died unexpectedly on January 3rd, 2012 following a six-month battle against cancer. Gill was born in the village of Stokesley, Yorkshire, England in 1940. Following high school, she went on to train as a nurse, at St. James’s University Hospital, Leeds. She married her present husband Ian, in Leeds, England in 1961 and came to Canada with her husband and children in 1967. She gained a first class B.Sc. degree in Microbiology in 1974 from the University of Alberta, Edmonton going on to work as the Senior Technologist at the Provincial Veterinary Laboratory, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Ultimately the family came to BC where after a short period with the Provincial Animal Health Laboratory she opened and managed a very successful microbiology laboratory in Richmond, BC. Gill is survived by her husband Ian; children Richard (Kelly) and Andrea (Kirk); grandchildren David, Kyle, Chris, Aynsley and Sean. The family would like to thank the Richmond Hospital Oncology Deptartment for the great professionalism and emotional support that Gill received at all times on the numerous occasions she underwent therapy in the Unit. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC on Sunday, January 15th, 2012 at 1pm. We ask that, in lieu of floral tributes, donations be made to the BC Cancer Society. On-line condolences may be placed at www.deltafuneral.ca

MacDonald, Alma Ophelia August 7, 1919 – December 31, 2011
It is with great sadness that we annouce the passing of our mother. Alma was born Alma Ophelia Harper on Aug. 7, 1919 in Thunder Bay, Ontario to her father Frank Hartley Harper (1895-1974) and her mother Edna Elsie Harper (18941987). Alma’s father, Above picture is of Alma O. MacDonald and her husband, Bruce F. MacDonald (Bruce passed in 2008). Frank Harper, served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment, 16th Battalion in World War I. He was wounded at the Battle of the Somme in France. After the war, Frank Harper supported his family by working as an Engineer for the CNR and investing in residential real estate. Before Alma’s 4th birthday, her Harper family had settled in Edmonton, Alberta. At 5 years of age, Alma met her neighbour and future husband Bruce Forbes MacDonald. Alma and Bruce maintained a very special and close relationship through their elementary and high school years in Edmonton. When they were 15 years of age, Alma and Bruce eloped to Fort Saskatchewan to get married. The Minister told Bruce to take Alma home and let her grow up. Alma attended and graduated from McTavish Business College. In 1940, at 21 years of age, Alma and Bruce were married in Edmonton, Alberta. After their marriage, Bruce F. MacDonald enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy to serve in World War II. He was a Chief Petty Officer stationed in St. John’s, N.L. Alma MacDonald followed Bruce to St. John’s, and there, she worked as the private secretary to the American Base Commander at Fort Pepperrell. After the war, Alma and Bruce MacDonald settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. They had two children and Alma devoted much of the next twentytwo years to raising her children. Alma was a exceptional wife and mother. She spent much of her time interacting with her children, dispensing her wisdom and philosophy of life. She also taught them about compassion, caring, loyalty to family and the importance of having a relationship with God. Her husband Bruce F. MacDonald, also an excellent parent, became a Research Scientist (Chemistry) for Forintek. After the children grew up, Alma and Bruce moved to Tsawwassen, B.C. Alma and Bruce were married for 68 years and they never lost their closeness. On June 3, 2008, Bruce died at the Kinsmen Retirement Center in Tsawwassen, B.C. Alma died at the same Kinsmen Retirement Center on Dec. 31, 2011 at the age of 92. A heart felt thank you to the staff of the Kinsmen Retirement Center for the excellent care they provided for Alma and Bruce. Alma MacDonald had two children: a son Bruce (Barb) and a daughter Denise/Dee (Doug), 5 grandchildren: Shaun, James, Stacey, Leia and Debra and 9 great grandchildren: Ashley, Tisha, Amanda, Alexander, Shaun, Connor, Elizabeth, Andrew and Sara.
