The union representing Delta’s civic employees is busy preparing to begin contract negotiations with the municipality. CUPE Local 454, which represents more than 850 workers at the Corporation of Delta as well as police department civilians and employees of the Delta Museum and Archives, has formed its own committees to discuss various issues. President Darryl Robison has also been meeting with CUPE locals in other communities to formulate a coordinated approach. “We’re assessing what the other locals will be seeking at the table and see how that meshes with what we seek,” he told the Optimist. The union’s contract is set to expire Dec. 31, so it can legally serve notice on Sept. 1 in order to commence collective bargaining. Noting the November municipal election could be problematic as far as negotiations go, Robison said the union will have its proposals to Delta by next month. He also said he’d like to meet beforehand with Delta CAO George Harvie to discuss the negotiation process. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the certification of Delta’s civic workers. The outside employees certified with National Union of Public Employees in 1951. In 1959, the year the George Massey Tunnel opened, a group of inside workers decided to unionize as well, creating a sub-local of the outside workers. Robison did some research on the issues facing those employees and found working conditions and
The B.C. government is suing the Delta police department in an effort to recover the costs of health care provided to a former professional hockey player injured during an assault at a North Delta nightclub. In December 2006, Garrett Burnett, a former member of the Anaheim Ducks, was injured during a fight at Cheers. He was hit in the head with a bar stool during the melee and spent the next 20 days in a coma and four months recovering in hospital. Burnett, 35, suffered a brain injury, broken facial bones, headaches, soft tissue injuries, chipped teeth and facial numbness. He has not played hockey since. In a notice of civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, the government alleges Delta police, which had been called to the premises thousands of times in the years preceding the assault, were negligent because officers failed to carry out a proper investigation. In its lawsuit, the government claims that one police exhibit, a surveillance video and hard drive, was lost or destroyed after it was seized from the scene. The government also alleges the club owners and operators were negligent in failing to ensure patrons would be reasonably safe on its premises. Burnett filed his own lawsuit again police and the nightclub owners citing negligence. According to court documents, his suit against the club owners was settled in February. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the department will not comment as the matter is before the courts. With files from the Province

Mayor’s daughter critical of ND
Barb Jackson says community she now calls home is in disrepair, points finger at absentee landlords BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Something has to be done to clean up the woefully shabby appearance of some areas of North Delta. That’s how Barb Jackson, Mayor Lois Jackson’s daughter, feels about the community she recently returned to live in. Barb Jackson conveyed her concerns about the state of North Delta in a letter to the Surrey Leader, writing, “Drive down any given street and they should be renamed either Crack House Alley, Grow Op Lane, or Renters Avenue.” Jackson, who grew up in North Delta but moved away in early adulthood, has returned to live with her family since her sister’s death. She lives in a house with her mother, the long-
time Delta council member who’s been mayor since 1999. She said over the years it seems like rental properties have ruined North Delta, adding people used to have pride in their homes, yards and gardens, but that’s not the case any longer. In a telephone interview this week, Jackson told the Optimist her concerns were not intended to slam those in charge at municipal hall, but rather those buying houses as investments. She said something needs to be done to encourage absentee landlords to keep up their properties and not allow neighbourhoods to run down. “I grew up here but it’s really changed... there’s lots of places that are beautiful and well maintained but drive down 92nd Avenue

there are some areas that look so bad she wouldn’t want to walk down those streets at night alone. Asked for a response to her daughter’s concerns, Mayor Lois Jackson said Barb, like herself, isn’t afraid to express her opinion. The mayor said bylaw enforcement acts promptly if a complaint is filed and that municipal hall passed a secondary suite bylaw this year to bring basement units up to standards. The mayor admitted North Delta has its challenges, predominantly due to an aging housing stock and a lack of variety. She said solutions are being explored. “I look at some of those townhouses down 64th Avenue (Surrey side of Scott Road) and there’s
some really nice places there,” she said. “We don’t seem to have the right zoning and I’m going to be really glad to get this North Delta Area Plan underway because there’s a lot we can explore, including more variety of housing.” The Scott Road corridor has been identified by Delta as a priority for the area plan review. According to the municipality, because there has been little development on Scott Road following the adoption of the existing area plan, a detailed economic study of Scott Road was commissioned to help identify why development hasn’t occurred, the types that would be appropriate, and incentives that could be used to encourage and attract it.

UNION from page 1 job classification were the major ones, topics that are still contentious with locals today. In 1963, the two groups affiliated with CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees), which formed that year as a result of the merger of the National Union of Public Employees and the Canadian Council of Public Employees. In 1965, the Delta workers applied to eliminate their two separate certifications in order to come under one certification as
CUPE Local 454. The upcoming contract talks could have an element of controversy because Metro Vancouver is expected to be involved, even though its role is questioned by both the union and municipal government In April 2010, the municipality served 24 months notice to the regional district of Delta’s intention to withdraw from the region’s Labour Relations Bureau, which provides contract bargaining services to member municipalities.
The department was formed decades ago to provide a united front for municipalities when they negotiated labour contracts with their civic workers. Burnaby, Vancouver and others have also given notice while Richmond and Port Coquitlam are already out; Surrey was never a member of bureau. Mayor Lois Jackson said at the time notice was given that the LRB served a useful role in collective bargaining matters, however problems surfaced in the last round of bargaining in 2007 with Delta’s civic employees.
A report released this year by labour consultant Jim Dorsey, who was commissioned by the bureau, found the bargaining system to be broken. He recommended a new model be established. Robison agreed, saying, “The last round was a little different because we had interference from Metro Vancouver at the table and they are an active participant. They took the lead in the discussions, and they had, and still have, veto power over any agreement we could reach with Delta, so they carry a lot of power.”
He said by the end of the last round of negotiations, Metro was still at the table, but he and CUPE officials got things done by speaking directly with Harvie. “We got a deal done without the filter of Metro Vancouver trying to impose the regional mandate that was there at the time around the Olympics, and trying to negotiate a 39-month contract, which wasn’t really a workable solution for Delta,” Robison said. Metro could be useful for the employer providing research and other support, but shouldn’t have the final say in contract negotiations,
he added. “The issue I had with them in the past is they’re trying to impose the mandate and contract language and practices that exist in other municipalities that don’t necessarily work for Delta’s workforce and Delta’s community.” CUPE Local 454 has also formed a political action committee to ask council candidates in November’s civic election their positions on issues. The local says it will endorse those who value public sector workers, will listen to concerns and are less likely to contract out work.

Museum building on borrowed time Century-old structure in need of upgrades, but costly work might mean it’s better to find a new location SANDOR GYARMATI
It’s well known the historic building housing Delta’s museum has a plethora of problems, but it won’t be upgraded anytime soon unless grant money is somehow obtained. In a recent presentation to Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission, Mark Sakai, executive director of Delta Museum and Archives, described some of the issues with the Ladner Village building, which turns 100 next year. Sakai said new cracks are forming, causing concerns about old building materials, including asbestos. The cramped quarters and lack of accessibility for the mobility impaired have also been long-standing issues. While the Delta Museum and Archives Society saw a positive step with the relocation of the outdated archives to a new facility, called the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room, near municipal hall, thanks to government infrastructure funding, it still remains to be seen

Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, last year told Delta council the municipality would apply for a grant from a federal program aimed at funding
projects that improve accessibility for people with disabilities. The funding, however, wasn’t secured. Coun. Scott Hamilton, vice-chair of the parks, recreation and culture commission, told the Optimist

if the building was to be upgraded, it would be a major expenditure because many code requirements, including making the building accessible for the disabled, would have to be fulfilled. “The moment you touch that building, you have to deal with the accessibility and asbestos issues. We’d love to be able to do that, but it’s a matter of applying some sound financial management on a project like that. It could wind up being over the top,” Hamilton said. It would be a similar scenario to the Delta Gymnastics Society’s new Delta Sport Development Centre and the Reach Child and Youth Development Society, which is now raising money for a centre in Ladner. Both those sites are owned by Delta but the societies are also expected to raise capital. “I think we would expect the museum (society) to take the lead on that,” Campbell said. “Certainly

our staff are always scouring for grants that are always available but in a situation like that, it’s up to the society to take the plunge and make that first step. Usually these things are one-third (society), one-third (Delta), one-third (government) deals.” Campbell noted the historic building will one day have to be upgraded, but for the museum’s purposes, it might be better off locating to an entirely new building once the high costs of repairing and updating the old building are taken into account. Noting their fundraising activities are geared toward providing programming, society chair Angela Husvik was asked to respond to Campbell’s comment. She said she was surprised to hear her society was expected to also raise money for updating the building, saying it’s the first the society has heard of it. She said it’s unfortunate many older residents who have mobility problems can’t enjoy the current facility and programs. Sakai told the Optimist they’d have no problems doing their share as far as far as renovating or having a new building. A consultant hired by the municipality in 2007 reported it would cost about $2 million to properly upgrade the building, which at one time housed municipal hall, the police department and the morgue.

Saturday’s festival is for the birds Music and the environment in spotlight at BC EATS raises awareness about our area’s unique ecosystems SANDOR GYARMATI
A local group hoping to preserve the Southlands is holding an event at Centennial Beach this Saturday called Festival for the Birds. Organized by the British Columbia Ecological Agricultural Trust Society (BC EATS), the event will focus on the environment and the unique ecosystems supporting birds and waterfowl in South Delta. The nearby Southlands property will also be in the spotlight as the society, which formed earlier this year, continues to lobby against development on the site. The group says it wants to raise awareness about sustainable options for the Southlands. Spokesperson Rob Johnson told the Optimist his group wants to showcase that where we live is the most important bird area in Canada. Everyone longs for happiness, but few are. This longing for happiness is universal and timeless. Unfortunately, happiness has become unreachable and unobtainable to most. Many Christians have been told that holiness and happiness just don’t go together. Messages are preached in church that “God is not interested in your happiness; He is only interested in your holiness”. The reasoning behind this message is that many acquaint Jesus as a man of sorrow, who is occupied with grief and seriousness. This reasoning is also used to explain away the unexplainable for things that we just don’t understand. We like to make up excuses and reasons for why people are suffering and sick. These false statements say that God ordains sickness and disease and He is using these things in our lives to help us to become more holy. And, if you have to suffer during this time, well so be it as God is not interested in your happiness. This is not the truth! This is not biblical and this is not what Jesus died for. There is not one example in the Bible where Jesus caused anyone to become sick to teach them a lesson. There is not one example in the New Testament where the Father had to use the enemies’ tactics to steal, kill and destroy because His love simply wasn’t enough anymore. However, the Bible does tell us that: “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”. (John 10:10) The same Bible also says that the joy of the Lord is our strength. “Then He said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength”. (Neh. 8:10)
The question we have to ask then is: Can true happiness be obtained? And, if so, how do we get it? The Bible is full of scriptures that command us to rejoice and be glad - Ps. 32:11, 40:16, 68:3, 70:4, to list a few. Some scriptures specifically command rejoicing in the midst of trouble. (Ps. 34:1, Matt. 5:12, John 16:33)

So, if joy was a command and people were punished for not rejoicing, like Israel in Deut. 28:47-48, then happiness is something we can control. Otherwise, the Lord would have been

Environment Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program instead of trying to develop the Southlands with housing. When the proposal was announced, Hodgins dismissed the BC EATS offer as nothing more than a public relations stunt. His latest development proposal for the contentious Southlands property contains far fewer houses and more green space. The plan includes 950 housing units with 80 per cent of the land, more than 400 acres, transferred to Delta. A more detailed proposal is to be unveiled on Sept. 12. unjust in commanding us to do it. Today, people think happiness is a result instead of a choice. They believe that if they didn’t have any problems and if they had an abundance of good things, happiness would be the inevitable result. That’s not true. Happiness isn’t a state of being; it’s a state of mind. A person can be happy when everyone and everything around them is in turmoil. They can be content no matter what the financial or physical conditions might be. True happiness and contentment isn’t dependent upon circumstances. However, how do we acquire happiness? First, we need to deal with what is on the inside. Most people take a different approach and want to deal with the outside. They pray for their problems to be solved and that only good things and good people will come their way. Let me give you a clue: That’s not going to happen! As long as we are in this world, we will have problems -John 16:33. “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock”. (Matt 7:24-25) The Bible is not saying that the trials will not come and that there will not be harder times in your life. However, the Bible also is not saying that He will send the wind and the waves to test how solid your foundation is. The enemy brings the storms because he wants to blow your house down - Not God! The Word says that if we are living for God, we will have persecutions -2 Tim. 3:12. If you never bump into the devil, it’s because you’re going in the same direction. When you turn around and start swimming upstream, you will always encounter resistance and people and circumstances might start working against you. You cannot always control what goes on outside, but you can totally control what goes on inside, when faced with that resistance. When you understand that, you will have discovered one of the greatest keys to happiness. In addition, you will be on your way to eliminating grief in your life. One of the most liberating things in the world is to love someone else
more than yourself. When the one you love more is God, you will rejoice when He is glorified, even if that happens through your suffering. The Bible tells us how Paul accomplished this in his own life. He said that all of his suffering had furthered the kingdom of God. In Philippians 1:12-14 Paul says, “ But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. That says volumes! Paul loved God and the furtherance of His kingdom more than he loved himself. If the kingdom of God was better off because of Paul’s imprisonment, then it was all worth it. What a great attitude! We would do well to adopt it. When God and others are more important than yourself, you are well on your way to happiness. 12
13
14
If you are all wrapped up in yourself, you make a very small package. This is the number one obstacle to contentment and happiness. Most people are addicted to self, like addicts are addicted to drugs. They are never satisfied. And this self-centered dissatisfaction is Satan’s greatest open door for temptation. He used self-interest to temp Adam and Eve, even though they lived in a perfect world without a single problem. “Then the serpent said to the woman, you will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Gen. 3:4-5) 4
5
Even Jesus’ disciples weren’t satisfied with Him. Despite all they had seen Him do, they still wanted more outward proof of who He was. Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” (John 14:8) We can never truly satisfy self. We just have to deny it. We have to die to self and place God and others ahead. That’s easier said than done, but once we die to ourselves, happiness is just around the corner. In the next article, I will continue to show you that God loves you.

Port volumes up slightly mid-year report shows Highlights need for infrastructure upgrades: president JESSICA KERR
Port Metro Vancouver’s president and chief executive officer says the strong numbers posted so far this year highlight the importance of planned infrastructure upgrades. The port released its 2011 mid-year results last week, with stable numbers showing solid performance for Canada’s largest and most diverse port. The report shows PMV handled 58.7 million tonnes of cargo in the first six months of 2011, a one per cent increase over the same period in 2010. Robin Silvester said growth in the “key cargo flows” in Deltaport underscores the importance of infrastructure upgrades,
such as South Fraser Perimeter Road, the rail expansion and Terminal 2. “As the year unfolds, it is clear that our strength lies in our diversity,” Silvester said. “We are pleased to see a renewed national focus on the importance of improving Canada’s trade and opportunities with rapidly Robin Silvester growing Asian President and CEO economies. economies continue to post Demand from increasing volumes in forest Asian economies continues products, potash and coal. to be the cornerstone of the port’s success and will drive Total foreign tonnage rose one per cent so far this year our business in the future.” Exports to growing Asian to 46.1 million tonnes.

PMV Key Sectors:
• Auto volumes dropped 28 per cent, a reflection of the market challenges stemming from the major disruption of manufacturing in Japan due to the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami. • Breakbulk cargo is down six per cent overall; however, foreign breakbulk exports have posted a 12 per cent increase due to the strength in demand for Canadian forest products, like lumber and logs. • Bulk volumes were up one per cent overall, with dry bulk cargoes like coal and potash posting a two per cent and 38 per cent increase, respectively, and liquid bulk cargo posting a 22 per cent decrease.

• Container traffic at Port Metro Vancouver has continued its upward trend, increasing five per cent year to date to 1.2 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent unit containers). • Cruise voyage and passenger numbers have increased with 81 cruise calls and 259,465 passengers during the first half of 2011, representing a 16 per cent increase. The port authority also anticipates a significant increase in the number of shore power connections during the 2011 cruise season, with an estimated 56 shore power-enabled cruise calls, up from 44 in 2010. TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW The hope is always that the new model is better, but I don’t think anyone’s found a foolproof way yet. As Delta’s civic workers get set to begin contract negotiations for the first time in four years, they’ll likely be looking across the table at a new, albeit familiar, foe. With Metro Vancouver’s Labour Relations Bureau, which provides local governments with a unified approach to bargaining, on its way out, the union is likely to do most of its negotiating directly with Delta. Will contract talks go more smoothly this time around because the municipality appears poised to regain the autonomy it lost as part of the regional approach? That’s the goal, although only time will tell if it actually comes to fruition. There won’t be a third party to impose a wider mandate on local discussions, theoretically making a resolution easier to come by, but the go-it-alone approach doesn’t come without its own drawbacks. Chief among them is the domino effect local bargaining can have on neighbouring jurisdictions. Years ago when school boards negotiated directly with their teachers there would always be one district that agreed to a settlement that was richer than the others were willing to pay. This deal would be held up as the industry standard, and although it wasn’t necessarily replicated everywhere else, it likely had an upward effect on subsequent settlements. This style of public sector bargaining worked so well Victoria eventually took over the role of local school boards and continues, to this day, to negotiate province-wide with B.C.’s teachers. The fact Delta and its unionized workers are headed toward the local model doesn’t mean troubled times are ahead. In fact, the ability to craft a contract that satisfies local interests, and not be beholden to the cookie cutter approach of a larger entity, is sure to have its benefits, for both the employer and employees. But what happens when one municipality settles for a larger raise than Delta is prepared to accept? Will civic employees here be willing to sign off for less, particularly when Delta uses that very same wage comparison to set salary levels for council members? I’m not suggesting upcoming negotiations are headed for trouble. In fact, if you get two reasonable parties, without any third party interference, your likelihood of reaching a settlement surely must increase. However, no bargaining model comes without its flaws.
Teachers need reality check
NIELS VELDHUIS & PETER COWLEY
GUEST EDITORIAL Given the current fiscal climate and comparisons with the income of average B.C. families, now is hardly the time for B.C. teachers to be asking for more. Rather than give in to the demands of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, Premier Christy Clark should ensure the next collective agreement ties teacher pay to performance. Consider that as a result of the recent recession the income of B.C. families has grown by only 0.8 per cent, on average, over the past four years. That’s lower than the rate of inflation. In other words, consumer prices have increased faster than the income of average B.C. families. Indeed, many families are actually worse off today in real terms. But not B.C. teachers. They signed a generous collective agreement in 2006 that gave them average wage increases of 2.5 per cent over five years. In addition, each teacher received a $4,000 signing bonus. After inking that deal, then-BCTF president Jinny Sims boasted of achieving “significant gains.” While average B.C. families
struggled during the recession, B.C. teachers prospered. And after all this, the BCTF wants even more as it renegotiates its contract. Here’s what the BCTF is currently asking for: • 26 weeks paid leave to care for someone (being a family member is not a requirement); • A year’s pay as a “bonus” for retiring veteran teachers; • Two weeks paid leave upon the death of any friend; • Five paid days per year for professional activities; • Two sick days a month that can be saved up; and • A substantial pay increase (not yet specified) that would make B.C. teachers “the best paid teachers in the country.” According to the teachers’ “employer” — the B.C. Public School Employers Association — it would cost B.C. taxpayers more than $2 billion to meet their demands. And that doesn’t include their full salary demands. While the B.C. teachers union continues to ask for more, it refuses to consider a “merit pay” system that rewards teachers for effective teaching and encourages less successful teachers to improve their skills. Such systems are common in both the public and the private sectors. Sales commissions, bonuses for established levels of superior

performance, piece work, team incentives and pay raises based on past success are all common systems of merit pay. B.C. teachers generally earn a pay increase in two ways: all teachers get an annual increase after completing each of their first 10 years of service; and pay increases are awarded to teachers that complete additional schooling. But the research here is clear. Except for the first couple of years of teaching, more experience doesn’t make a teacher more effective. Likewise, an advanced degree doesn’t necessarily produce a more effective teacher. The current compensation system for B.C. teachers simply does not recognize effectiveness, and the BCTF isn’t willing to consider one that does. Add to this the fact it is nearly impossible to penalize a failing teacher and you have a compensation system that contributes little to the improvement of our children’s future. B.C. families need the government to reach a reasonable deal with teachers before kids return to school in September. Unfortunately, the BCTF’s current demands are not reasonable. The people who bother to put up objections, or request changes, are engaged in the revision of their town and deserve to have their input counted, rather than disregarded. Taking the time to hear them and incorporate their needs may cramp the style of some developers and slow the rush to high density living, but it might also secure beautiful, safe and healthy high density living. Editor: Re: Transition tribulations, Aug. 5 I agree with Coun. Anne Peterson when she talks about “smart densification, not just throwing anything up anywhere.” That’s why I’m surprised she resists the thoughtful input of her constituents. She labels all who challenge the developers and council to do better as being against change. It’s possible that longtime residents have a good idea of what it would take to create livable higher density neighbourhoods.

Editor: I read where civic politicians want interchanges not intersections. Most people would agree there is a measurable difference between the pollution resulting from a group of idling vehicles at an intersection and a smooth flowing interchange. Delta has been guilty of not giving this adequate consideration by not providing right hand turn lanes at the start. Just to mention two, the lineups at Arthur Drive and 44th Avenue and again at Arthur Drive and Ladner Trunk Road. It’s great to see it now being addressed. Bill Vander Zalm

It is particularly sobering to note the article indicated that Delta residents, particularly older persons, have higher prevalence rates of diabetes, asthma and hypertension than the rest of the province. Worth restoring I still remember when my best friend in high school called me over to his house to show me this “great” find of a car he had found. The car was a 1965 Mustang fastback Shelby. Hearing this I raced over to his house, he lifted the garage door and my mouth dropped. What I was led to believe was that the car was immaculate and beautiful and yet the heap that sat in front of me looked like he had dug it out of someone’s backyard. It was junk. This “car” should have been melted and recycled, but instead of saying so I just quietly said, “Wow, um, nice, uh, car?” For the next three years my friend would work fervently on his new prize, and when it was finished the
car was a showstopper. He even won a few best in shows with it. My friend saw something when I and everyone else simply saw junk. When everyone else said to give up and sell it to some other poor sap, he refused and kept working. Through his blood, sweat and tears, he turned something ugly into something beautiful. That junk car reminds me of how God sees something worth restoring in us. Even though our sins make us ugly and worthless, Jesus Christ, through His blood, sweat and tears, turns me from something ugly into something beautiful, and our prize isn’t just a trophy, it’s Heaven.

inskill Park in Tsawwassen will once again be overrun with Dachshunds this weekend with the Western Dachshund Club’s annual Wiener Walk and Picnic. Set for Sunday, the 19th annual event will feature games, a costume contest and wiener walk. The event typi-
cally attracts hundreds of Dachshunds and their owners. Organizers are sticking with many of the same events that keep people coming back, said Susan Lankau, a Tsawwassen resident and secretary of the Western Dachshund Club, with one addition - an Earthdog demo. Earthdog is a trial that tests the working ability and instincts
of Dachshund’s and other small, short-legged terriers. Lankau said the demo will give dog owners a chance to see how the trial works. This is the 16th year the annual gathering has been held at Winskill Park. “For us, it’s sort of found a home,” she said. The event will start with a walk around the park for all the dogs in attendance,
Summer car boot sales continue at Centennial Car boot sales at the Centennial Beach parking lot are continuing as summer rolls along. Upcoming dates include Aug. 13 and 27 and Sept. 10 and 24. Incorrect dates that were submitted to the Optimist have previously appeared in the paper. The boot sales follow the traditional British form of a market where the boot (trunk) of a vehicle is used at a location
where private individuals come together to sell household items, garden goods, crafts, etc. It costs $10 for a space. Cammidge House Committee puts the funds raised towards providing amenities and comforts for the historical Cammidge House, located at Boundary Bay Regional Park. Sales are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. and are held weather permitting.
while a costume parade and contest will cap off the afternoon. Dachshunds, known for their short legs and long bodies, originated in Germany and have three coat varieties: smooth hair, wire hair and long hair. The canines were developed to chase burrow-dwelling animals. The name, Dachshund, is German and
translates to “badger dog”. A Dachshund owner since 1967, Lankau says the dogs are an independent breed. Participants from across the Lower Mainland, other areas of B.C., Alberta and Washington State, and some from as far away as Nova Scotia, have come to the event in the past. And many of them keep coming back
year after year. “We’ve made so many friends over the years who come every year,” Lankau said. “The dogs all come and they all get along.” The Wiener Walk and Picnic is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., with registration starting at 10:30 a.m. Entry costs $6 per dog. Humans get in for free.

A cleansing experience at Sparkling Hill Postmedia News
left my toxins in Sparkling Hill, Vernon, B.C. I’ve been stroked, prodded, heated, chilled, immersed, exfoliated, contorted, creamed, steamed and hydrated. That was the fun part; the diet was another story. Detox diets are all the rage these days. Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow, even Britney Spears have all admitted to a cleanse or three. Mine was different. Saturday I have my consultation with Sparkling Hill’s naturopathic physician Dr. Ray Lendvai. My friend Holly and I are the resort’s first guinea pigs to book its new Cleanse program, a modification of a detoxification regime invented by Austrian doctor F.X. Mayr, offered in clinics all over Austria and Germany. There is an Austrian connection here: Sparkling Hill is owned by Mr. Gernot Langes-Swarovski
(patriarch of the Austrian crystal family). The spa resort is unlike any other. For starters, the interiors are embellished with $10 million worth of Swarovski crystals. Dr. Ray checks my heart, blood pressure and weight. He advises me that although dropping pounds isn’t the goal of the Cleanse, “it will enhance elimination and burn stored fat by allowing the liver and kidneys to work more efficiently.” The diet? Every morning at 8 a.m. Holly and I have breakfast in the Cleanse dining room. Our waiter, Joseph, will serve us two pieces of dry spelt bread. We must chew slowly, masticating each morsel at least 30 times. With the bread comes half a cup of almond milk. At 11:30 a.m. we’ll get a bowl of broth made from vegetable scrapings and a cup of liver detox tea. After soup, we are to go to our rooms and rest with a hot water bottle placed against our livers. At 1 p.m. we repeat the bread and almond milk ration.

We are encouraged to help ourselves to lots of spring water and herbal teas. Sunday I am chewing, chewing the bread. I meet with spa manager, Silvia Groiche, to book the “gravy” part of my week — the spa treatments. I get two per day, plus a fitness activity. I’ve decided to do aqua fit classes in the morning. Silvia tells me I can have any of the treatments. She gives me

a reflexology treatment. The areas on my soles corresponding to my liver and pancreas are a tad tender. Around 7 p.m., I crawl into bed. Monday Neither Holly nor I are ravenous. Sascha gives me a lymphatic drainage massage followed by a divine Monticelli Mud Treatment.
Tuesday No headaches, no growling stomach. Dr. Ray urges me to carry on. Those who can’t handle the diet can switch to a brown rice and veggie plan. Spa indulgences include a pampering massage and anti-aging facial. Wednesday According to the scale I’ve dropped six pounds. Still not starving, but the food on Red Lobster TV ads looks appetizing. Thursday Silvia’s reflexology massage isn’t painful today. She says my feet are more pliable. Then she gives me a belly massage. Holly and I head into Vernon to buy groceries for our celebration dinner. Never has a brussel sprout or apple looked so ravishing. Friday After cellulite scrubs using coffee beans and pedicures, Holly and I tackle Predator Ridge Golf
Course just down the hill. We’ve got plenty of stamina but we cheat and buy two apples. I make mine last with my new chewing skills. Saturday Hurrah! I’m 9.6 pounds lighter, my skin is glowing and I’m full of vim and vigour. Today I take a yoga class followed by a Thai massage. Sunday Holly and I eat oatmeal and fruit for breakfast in the regular dining room. We play another round of golf. Dinner is grilled salmon, brown rice and asparagus. I vow to flush this body every spring. Sparkling Hill’s Cleanse, starting on Saturdays only. Package includes six nights in a deluxe room, sevenday Cleanse program; three appointments with naturopathic physician; detoxification kit; two spa treatments and one movement class per day. 1-877-2751556; sparklinghill.com.

Tips for sneaking in better health Well on Your Way I read — with much shock — in our very own Optimist last Friday that a report from the Fraser Health Authority deems residents in Delta to be, on average, less healthy than residents in the rest of the province. Ouch. Apparently, we have a higher percentage of individuals living with diabetes, asthma and hypertension and “we tend to eat fewer fruits and vegetables daily and are less physically active compared to the
province’s average.” Double ouch. Granted, the report noted our median age is slightly higher than the rest of the province, but it still didn’t take the sting away. I actually took this personally. I have been working with residents of Delta and getting them to move for over 18 years now, but apparently my work has just begun. All right FHA, we’ll show you! Try these five easy tips and sneak better health and fitness into your life, while at the same time sticking it to that report: 1. Walk. 10,000 steps a day is the recommendation for good health, but if you can’t fit that in your day, how about a 30-minute walk every day? In a
recent study conducted by Duke University, researchers found walking briskly for 30 minutes lowered the participant’s odds of developing metabolic syndrome — a cluster of risk factors linked to heart disease, diabetes and stroke. 2. Read your food labels. Which is better for you: Low fat peanut butter or natural peanut butter? Hope you choose the good ol’ higher-in-fat natural peanut butter, because anytime a food has had the fat taken out of it, the manufacturers just replace it with something else. And that is usually sugar and/or sodium (which are actually worse 08125201

for you). Be diligent. Read your labels and avoid foods that are high in sugar, saturated fat and sodium. 3. Watch your portion sizes. Twenty years ago when you ordered a coffee you got an eight-ounce cup with cream and sugar on the side. Calorie count: just under 45. Today our coffee sizes are typically 16 ounces and we have replaced good ol’ cream and sugar with things like café mochas with whip at a calorie count of 330. Our popcorn tubs 20 years ago held five cups of popcorn at 270 calories; today a large holds 20 cups of popcorn at a

Earthwise Garden hosting Jam Fest The Earthwise Society is celebrating summer with a Jam Fest as its third Market Day next Saturday, Aug. 20. The event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be a salute to jams in both sense of the word: good music and tasty preserves! It will feature music from children’s favourite Max Tell, smooth and exotic Kuimba, and the emerging local band Lucidity. Tell will be showcasing the best from his CD Monkey Mumbo Jumbo, which is filled with wit, wonder and wordplay for the whole family. He is about to launch his sixth CD and has delighted tens of thousands of children throughout B.C. and beyond via his seven world tours. Kuimba uses flavours of Africa and the Americas that coalesce in exotic world fusion rhythms for a mellow, upbeat mood. This unique music with its bold sensual rhythms, multilingual lyrics, trombone solos and warm, spirited vocals invokes the jubilant aura of village festivities. Lucidity is a rock/alternative band formed last summer through the local “Rock School” program in Delta. The band is young

Farmers reaping rewards of crop rotation low input and disease-resistant cereal grain varieties, and has been sharing the results along the way with Delta farmers. Dr. Art Bomke, an agrology professor at UBC who has been conducting the field-testing, says the results are promising and significant benefits are anticipated for local farms and the environment. “This project will go a long way towards increasing farm profitability within Delta. Using the new varieties we’ve researched, local farmers will be able to reduce their input costs for fertilizers and produce better yields, while at the same time contributing to crop and wildlife diversity.” Since the project began, there has been increasing interest from Delta grow-

Now in the final phases of completion, it is clear the demonstrations offered through the project have enhanced the ability of Delta farmers to understand and implement environmentally and economically sustainable practices. Ab Singh, an organic
bean, potato and corn grower on Westham Island Road, is impressed by the benefits demonstrated by practicing cereal grain crop rotation. While attending one of the project demonstrations, Singh was able to learn about different types of grains sourced from within Canada and around the world, and how the dif-
ferent varieties perform in climates similar to Delta’s. Back on his farm, the results are in: “The variety trials showed me which specific grains would work best on my farm, and the yields have definitely been much higher than in previous years. I also now have the option to use manure from year to year, so I’m saving a lot on fertilizer costs.” Many other Delta farmers like Singh have started using new varieties of cereal grains as break crops to help improve their profit margins. They have also been learning about fertilizer nutrient management practices that will help them save money, sustain soil and conserve water over the long term, protect fisheries and wildlife resources, and
improve the compatibility between agricultural practices and the environment. While the work being conducted is currently focused on soil-based farmers on the Fraser delta, it is anticipated that research outcomes and best management practices identified from this project will be applicable to similar farmers throughout the south coastal region. Funding for the EcoFriendly Crop Rotation Project is provided by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAF), which delivers a wide variety of programs that enable the B.C. agriculture and agri-food industry to adapt, diversify and grow. For information on funding eligibility, visit www. iafbc.ca.

Crop rotation — which involves growing a series of different crops (or “break crops”) in the same field in sequential seasons — is a practice familiar to farmers as it yields a variety of benefits. For instance, it is useful for preventing the build up of pathogens and pests, and improving soil structure and fertility. With organic production on the rise and farmers facing increased fertilizer costs, the Delta Farmers’ Institute (DFI) became interested in using cereal grain crop rotations (such as oat, barley and wheat) to increase environmental and economic benefits for local vegetable producers. Through the Eco-Friendly Crop Rotation Project, the DFI has been working to identify and field-test new

More and more British Columbians are choosing locally grown and made products to feed their families. When we serve Delta grown potatoes, vegetables, berries or dairy products, our families enjoy the freshness and flavours of food produced in some of Canada’s finest soil and growing conditions. We should all be thankful for the food Delta produces. We depend on it for our health and sustenance, and relish the flavours that fresh and wholesome ingredients bring to a meal. And we should all appreciate the almost 200 farming families in Delta that produce our food. They are at work before many of us have risen, and are often still there when the sun goes down at night. Farm children learn about agriculture from their parents at an early age. They spend their childhood and youth watching parents, older siblings and relatives
working in the fields, offices and barns, as knowledge and expertise is shared from one generation to the next. Delta farmers have, after all, been feeding British Columbians since before 1873, when a wharf was built on land donated by the Ladner family. Farmers would load their harvest and livestock onto boats at “Ladner’s Landing” that would then begin a steam-powered journey up the Fraser River to New Westminster or across the Strait of Georgia to Victoria or Nanaimo. These days, Delta farm families continue to feed our province, country and economy. Delta’s farms generate a total of about $190 million in annual gross farm receipts, which result in $34 million in wages. Farming and agriculture are an integral part of neighbourhoods and lives in Delta, and a foundation of the community. I feel that connection each time I visit here, including my trip on July 25, when I

Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust has been working with Delta farmers for 18 years, during which time it’s helped to establish over 7,700 acres of grassland set-asides and over 52,700 acres of winter cover crops. Over 5.5 kilometres of native trees and shrubs have been planted and maintained through the trust’s Hedgerow Program. Monitoring projects reveal a diversity of wildlife, especially migratory birds, use these farmland habitats. Data show that agriculture can have a positive impact on regional and international wildlife conservation. Agriculture is one of the most intriguing human endeavours, if for no other reason than it drastically shapes both our human societies and the physical places within which we exist. At its most basic, it produces food for human survival. It is also an economic venture, similar to all other economic ventures in that money is invested in the production of a good, to be sold for profit in the marketplace. Unlike many human economic ventures, however, agriculture can be managed to sustain the greater complexity of the world around us, the complexity upon which we rely upon for our collective survival. Take for example the cropping systems of Delta, which are unique in how they are managed. Many farms produce vegetables, including potatoes, peas, beans, cole crops, and squash. Crops cannot be

The Earthwise Farm is a community demonstration farm located in Boundary Bay. The three-acre site includes flower gardens, allotment plots and approximately two acres in mixed crops. Earthwise Society runs programs year-round to engage the community in learning about all aspects of sustainable agriculture, from field to fork. The public is invited to visit the farm, open daily throughout the summer. On Wednesdays, from 3 to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Earthwise Farm Store sells seasonal produce harvested daily from the farm. Pesticide free, the farm is in its third year of transitional organic certification. Volunteers run the store, and all proceeds support the community education programs of the not-for-profit Earthwise Society. Although many of us think of farming as extending only from spring to fall, the Earthwise Farm is working toward year-round
production of vegetables to maximize productivity from small-scale farming. This year, the store opened in early March, selling winter greens like kale, spinach and bok choy. Weather permitting, the society hopes to be able to continue to provide fresh local veggies right up until December. Year-round growing increases the value of the society’s school education programs. Earthwise has partnered with the Delta school district to introduce Sustainable Resources 12 Agriculture, a science credit course that gets students out of the classroom. For younger students, the Day at the Farm Eco-tour is offered. Last spring, over 1,000 students and their families took part in the society’s school programs. The Earthwise Society’s community supported agriculture (CSA) program sells subscriptions to a 20-week harvest box of fresh, sustainably grown produce. The CSA program reconnects supporters to the cycles of the growing
season and allows them to discover the tastes of freshfrom-the-field produce. Earthwise encourages community involvement. To learn more about how and where our food is grown, visitors can pick up a brochure for a selfguided stroll or arrange for a guided group tour. Bring a picnic to enjoy in one of the numerous picnic spots in the garden. For those who don’t have space to garden at home, Earthwise has 65 community allotment plots. Many people find that volunteering at Earthwise is a great way to learn, while making a contribution to the community. From helping out in the farm store or on the farm to assisting with community programs, there are opportunities for everyone. Bees are crucial for agriculture BY
PATRICIA FLEMING
Optimist contributor
Ever wondered what the world would be like without bees? When most people think of bees, they think of honey, in teas or on toast. But without bees, you would also be without jam, apple pie and pasta marinara. In fact, you can thank bees for one out of every three spoonfuls of food you eat. Bees are pollinators, and local farmers rely on bees for crop production. The estimated annual value of honeybee and bumblebee pollination to the B.C. economy was $440 million in 2008. Of that, the estimated annual value of bee pollination to greenhouses for tomatoes and peppers was $189 million Annually, pollinators contribute nearly 10 per
cent to the global food economy, or $218 billion. Of the 100 or so crop species that provide 90 per cent of the world’s food, bees pollinate 71 of them, according to a United Nations report. Bees and other pollinators are not only crucial for agricultural productivity, but they are a vital component of healthy and productive ecosystems that support life on earth. Among the 20,000 known bee species worldwide, the honeybee is the most important. Unfortunately, something is happening to our honeybee populations. A few years ago, beekeepers worldwide sounded the alarm about dramatic declines in bee populations. In March 2011, the Vancouver Sun reported that B.C. beekeepers in some areas reported
up to 90 per cent loss in their hives last winter. According to Paul Van Westendorp, apiculturist with the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, one of the most important factors for healthy bee populations is availability of food sources throughout the growing season. Many crops have a short season of bloom, but the bees that pollinate them need food all year. Some farmers have taken action by adopting farmscaping techniques, planting a mixture of crops, herbs and flowering plants on their farms to attract bees and other beneficial insects. The Earthwise Farm and Garden in Boundary Bay models many of these techniques. However, the threat to our bee populations is

not an issue that can be addressed by farmers alone. Feed the Bees, a joint initiative of Delta Chamber of Commerce and Earthwise Society, encourages individual action to promote healthy bees. This includes eliminating the use of pesticides from urban gardens and planting to attract bees. Earthwise Society can help interested homeowners design beefriendly gardens and also provides bee garden starter kits for $35, available at the Earthwise offices or Farm Store. Visit www.feedthebees. org and you will see how participating gardens throughout our community are beginning to create bee flyways. Naturally Grown with Energy efficiency taken Craftsman Care seriously at greenhouse since 1976 BITTERLICH

Growing nutritious food and using as little energy as possible is a challenge for every Canadian farmer. Dirk de Jong and Kelly Knowlan of Village Farms have worked hard over the years to come up with new ways to maximize energy savings at the 44-hectare Delta greenhouse. Greenhouses are heated naturally when the glass traps the sun’s heat. This allows the crop’s growing season to be extended into early spring and late fall, but supplemental heating is still sometimes required. “When there is a heat demand we use natural gas boilers to heat water that is distributed throughout the greenhouse via pipe rails,” explains de Jong, regional manager Canada. “As a bonus, the carbon dioxide generated from the use of natural gas is captured and fed to the crop during daylight hours, resulting in healthier, stronger plants
and higher tomato yields.” The most efficient way to run the computer-controlled boilers is at a steady pace. “We can do this,” states Knowlan, senior maintenance supervisor, “as we have two hot water storage tanks that can each hold 3.7 million litres. As the water is heated, it is stored in the tanks until it is needed in the greenhouse.” There is no waste since the water is in a closed loop system. In 2003, Village Farms was able to reduce the use of its boilers by one-third when it partnered with the City of Vancouver and Maxim Power to take advantage of the methane gas produced by the Vancouver Landfill. Gas from the landfill is piped underground to Maxim Power’s co-generation facility, which is located next to the greenhouse. Four diesel generators, converted to burn methane, produce 7.2 megawatts of electricity that is fed into B.C. Hydro’s power grid.
Return water from the greenhouse is used to cool the engines before it’s sent back to heat the greenhouse. “It’s a win-win situation,” says de Jong. “Previously the methane gas was being flared and the city had complaints about bad odours. Now it is converted into green energy and the waste heat is used to grow the crop.” Energy screens are a more recent tool used to conserve heat. “The screens are transparent,” notes de Jong, “so we can use them during the day as well as at night to help to reduce our heating requirements.” The screens are computer deployed over the crop based on outside temperatures and provide up to 40 per cent energy savings. “This year with the cold spring we used the screens until the end of April,” says de Jong. Pioneers’ attack comes to life to even series Ladner Pioneers’ slumbering offence woke up Tuesday night to even their best-of-seven West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association championship series against the Tri-City Bandits. After managing just 10 goals in their last two games combined, including just three in a series opening loss to the Bandits, Ladner exploded for six goals in the second period, then added five more in the third for a convincing road
11-5 victory. The series continued when the teams returned to the Ladner Leisure Centre last night for game three. Game four is slated for Saturday in Burnaby at 8 p.m. Visit www.delta-optimist.com for further updates. The Pioneers erased a 2-0 first period deficit with two goals in 55 seconds to open the second period. The visitors then took full control with four
unanswered goals, including three in just 49 seconds. Quinn Waddington paced the attack with a third period natural hat trick. Cam Taylor, Bill Mischke, Taylor Hetherington, Dave Yee, Adam Haydon, Kevin Redhead and Greg Rennie had the other goals. Travis St. Germain added four assists, while Kevin Hill was solid in net with 45 saves.

For a change, Ray Moon is going to have plenty of company on the sidelines for the coming high school football season. The longtime head coach of the South Delta Sun Devils has typically had to deal with small rosters, resulting in many of his players having to play on both sides of the ball and some never leaving the field. When the Devils open training camp Aug. 22, a depth chart will actually be required with 36 players expected to report. Not since the 1980s has the Tsawwassen school had a surplus of 30 players to work with. There are only 10 returning seniors but the Devils hit the jackpot with its unofficial feeder program. As many as 24 players are coming in from the South Delta Bantam Rams community program. Thanks to surplus of big bodies too, it means Team B.C. member and defensive line standout Travis McDonald will very likely only have to worry about quarterback sacks rather than pass protection and blocking. “It certainly is a luxury we haven’t had since my time here,” said Moon. “This is not only a very athletic group but has a lot of size too. A guy like Travis we are leaning on for the defensive line and hopefully he won’t have to play too much offence which should keep him fresh.” While the Devils are big in numbers, their overall lack of experience will be the biggest stumbling block. Most are not only going to have to learn a new playbook but adjust from playing three down Canadian rules to four down American. With four of five teams qualifying for the playoffs, the post-season is easily attainable and the progress over the next three months will dictate how far this group can go. “I definitely think we have an excellent opportunity to finish third and have a good shot at second,” continued Moon. “If we can get to where I think we can be come playoff time, then this team is very capable of making a deep run.” The starting quarterback duties will fall on the shoulders of graduating Bantams David Mann and Kyle Menzies who were both selected to play in this spring’s Star Bowl game as top players in the Vancouver Mainland Football League. “David has good size which gives him the ability to look down field where Kyle is more of an option quarterback when we want to change things up,” said Moon. The coaching staff of eight, which includes Mark MacDonald now serving as offensive coordinator, is also counting on big seasons from speedster Mitch Dino and Austin Pearson who both saw playing time a year ago as Grade 9s. End Zone... •The team’s training camp will conclude with a trip to Kamloops just prior to Labour Day Weekend where the Devils will hold two practice sessions then scrimmage against Prince George. Moon will miss the trip to compete in the arm wrestling and tug-of-war events at the World Police and Fire Games in New York.

’93 Invaders end terrifc run at Westerns Midget “B” girls softball team turns in strong showing in Medicine Hat
Members of the South Delta ’93 Invaders ended their softball careers on a high note by representing B.C. at last week’s Western Canadian Midget “B” Championships in Medicine Hat. After an impressive regular season, the Invaders produced a solid second place finish at the provincials in Nanaimo to earn their trip across the Rockies — facing teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The girls started off with a tough loss to the Kindersley Royals from Saskatchewan, but then went on a 4-0 run with wins over the Alberta Cobras, Westman Magic, Calgary Triple Threat and the host
team — Medicine Hat Thunder. The results set up a showdown for second place in round-robin play against the Manitoba Angels. South Delta got off to a sizzling start with six runs in the first inning before the Angels battled back and eventually took the lead for good. The loss dropped the Invaders into a third place logjam with three other teams with identical 4-2 records. Based on a runs for/runs against tiebreaking formula, the locals had to play back-to-back playoff games on top of the two they had already played during the day in plus 30C temperatures. Things started well with

and the Invaders bats fell quiet and eventually just ran out of gas. On the first pitch of the game, starting pitcher Steph Horsley took a line drive on her leg and was forced out of the game. The next pitcher — Melissa Lawson — then injured her wrist while batting, forcing the Invaders to use a third pitcher before the game was even two innings old. With an already depleted bench due to injuries, the Invaders could not pull off the win. It was, however, a great experience for all the players and parents who travelled. The people and town of Medicine Hat were
great hosts. “The players played their hearts out and showed great sportsmanship. “I couldn’t be more proud of the way they played and acted throughout the whole tournament – they are a fine group of young ladies,” said Invaders head coach Doug Steer. Over the past eight years, the team has travelled to tournaments in Denver, Las Vegas, Mount Vernon and Kelowna, while also qualifying for provincials seven times. The team also represented B.C. twice in Western Canadian Championships. The other
appearance was 2009 in Winnipeg. The players include: Jordan Steer, Nicoline Martel, Jill Battison, Brooke Elphick, Stephanie Horsley, Amy Zell, Lindsay Woof, Breanne Mckenzie, Brooke Bogress, Andrea Crema, Melissa Lawson, Nyssa Lessingham and Theresa Prest. The girls have been coached by Randy Martel, Ritch Mckenzie and Steer for all eight seasons. The team hopes to continue on at the junior level next year after the players return from their post secondary education. 08125593

Falcons have a strong presence at U16 national championships both the defensive unit as well as the “push-out” on the offensive short corner unit which produced many goals. In all, B.C. Blue outscored their opposition 19-1. They faced a determined Ontario team in the semifinals who surprised them early by taking a 2-1 lead into halftime. In the second half, B.C. Blue came out firing, dominating play and scoring four unanswered goals to secure a 5-2 win and a berth in the championship game. B.C. White went 3-1 in round robin play, with its only loss coming to B.C. Blue. Matthews was between the pipes in two round robin games (winning both) and also played in the semi-final where he backstopped his team to a 4-1 victory and a Sunday date

with B.C. Blue. The final ended up being rather decisive. With two early goals, B.C. Blue took charge and eventually managed a 6-0 victory. The much younger B.C. White team played very well for a much-deserved silver medal. Also participating in the B.C. program were Ryan Littlewood, who was picked-up to play goal for Saskatchewan, and Josh Kitagawa who was selected as a reserve player for both B.C. teams. “It is exciting that these kids get to play and have success at a national championship representing their province and their club,” said Guy Manwaring, Falcons Club Captain.
The Delta Falcons contingent, including (left to right) Matthew Littlewood, David Littlewood, Ryan Littlewood, Jack Matthews, Jacob Kitagawa, Josh Kitagawa, had prominent roles in both B.C. teams making the final at the U16 national field hockey championships at Eric Hamber.

DAVIES - Reginald Herbert “Bert” Bert passed away suddenly at home on Wednesday August 3, 2011. He was born October 27, 1926 and raised in West Vancouver. Bert had a successful career in the carpet industry moving from Vancouver to Kelowna and Calgary before settling back in West Vancouver. After retiring from Harding Carpets as BC Vice President, Bert kept busy with charitable work for the BC Paraplegic Association, and the Canadian Orthopedic Foundation. Bert also enjoyed providing consulting services for his son’s restaurant business the Sequoia Group. Bert will be remembered for his unquenchable sense of humour, as a perpetrator of practical jokes, and a source of almost believable stories. On the occasion of his 80th Birthday a dear friend wrote: “There once was a chap called Bert Davies Who was sent down on earth to deprave us His practical jokes on innocent folks Resulted in cries of “please save us”” Bert is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Colleen, daughter Sharon, sons Brent and Michael (Betsy), grandchildren Daynas and Qantas Corman, Thomas and Isabel Davies; and great grandchildren Nina and Aliana Corman. A celebration of Bert’s life, and sharing of his wonderful stories, will be held at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, 3811 Point Grey Road, Vancouver, on Wednesday August 23, 2011 from 3:30pm to 6:30pm,

Meanwhile, focus your energy on past or ongoing projects/ people. And, if nothing else, just bask in your slowly but widely growing popularity! Sunday to Tuesday are mellow, wise, gentle: show love. Careful Wednesday: authorities, bosses are in a black mood – Thursday’s the opposite! Friday/Saturday bring happiness! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Your energy and charm remain high, Leo. But start nothing important before Aug. 26. Your “wisdom planet” is in a place of retreat, secrets, watching and contemplating until Sept. 18 – you’ll “get it” Sunday-Tuesday. Though you’re assertive, romantic and adventurous now, your wisdom, your best conclusions, will come from those “quiet moments.” A former “friendly romance” might reappear: to little avail Tuesday/Wednesday, to great benefit Thursday! But realize romance in 2011 is a diversion, not a future. Your career, your education is more fruitful, as Friday/Saturday show. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Your hopes grow about a sexual or financial situation (investment?) a research project, or a health concern. (These fail Wednesday, but Thursday blesses them.) Don’t start a new relationship or project, especially in these sexual, etc. areas, before Aug. 26 – in the three weeks following (to Sept. 18) you’ll be able to grab them with more luck and energy. Welcome and handle a former tax, government, head office, charity, spiritual or similar contact or obligation. Your legal position is strong. Relationships please early week. Gentle love mellows you Friday/Saturday.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: This is your last week of romance, so enjoy it. (If you’re married, whenever I say “romance,” you can substitute nature’s beauty, creativity, fun, love of children – the biggest romantics become the most loving parents.) Retreat, rest and contemplate Sunday to Tuesday eve – an old flame might light your solitude. Your charm and energy flow forth Tuesday night through Thursday. Wednesday’s tough – wait until Thursday to chase good things. (But remember, start nothing new before Aug. 26.) Chase money Friday/Saturday – luck rides with you! Avoid home friction all August. Taurus April 20-May 20: The recent sluggish pace continues. Sink into it, rest, relax, soak up nature. Shore up security, home affairs, children, gardening, etc. Your home is a haven of beauty and affection all August. A former plan, visitor (relative) or home repair, project might return –OK, but don’t start anything big (in any area, before Aug. 26). Some irritating duties or errands might draw you into more activity than you want: that’s OK, just get them done. Your popularity and optimism rise Sunday to Tuesday. But retreat, rest Tuesday eve to Thursday. Friday/Saturday, your energy surges! Gemini May 21-June 20: Be careful with money to Sept. 18. More comes in, more goes out. You could be spending lots, and not know it (e.g., until your lawyer’s bill arrives). Tell people to stop charging you. Delays, cancellations affect communications, travel, errands, schedules, appointments. Be patient. Re-visit old haunts, contact old friends, old loves. (Result: a reassuring, mild happiness.) Career/ reputation pressures rise Sunday to Tuesday – all’s fine! Your hopes and popularity rise Wednesday (problems) and Thursday (sweet). Retreat, rest Friday onward. Start nothing new before Aug. 26.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: A former lover or “flirty friend” might return, or your thoughts bend strongly toward him/her. If you’re both free, why not? It’s pleasing, without danger. But don’t pursue it Tuesday (though you’re tempted, it signals “empty results”) nor Wednesday (strong resentment) – Thursday is perfect. If it (or any attraction) appears Friday or Saturday, then don’t fool yourself: one of you is contemplating cheating on someone. Tackle ”mutual” chores Sunday, routine chores Monday/ Tuesday. Seek co-operation, agreement Thursday, not Wednesday. Research, finances lucky Friday/ Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: The accent remains on your career, status, reputation, and dealings with VIPs, authorities, bosses and parents. Strictly avoid legal hassles to Sept. 18 – don’t mix legalities and authorities (e.g., judges, police). Otherwise, higherups admire you, even want to do you a favour – help them! A former boss or career role might return. It’s harmless, and could benefit you. Forget “control” – loose and flexible receives. Romantic notions sweeten Sunday-Tuesday. Work and co-workers irk you Wednesday, benefit and bless you Thursday – time actions. Exciting meetings Friday/Saturday! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your home’s a haven of peace and sexy attraction Sunday (even Monday/ Tuesday) – but don’t start new home-related projects (e.g., buying sheets, renting, renovations) – nor anything important in any area – before Aug. 26. An old flame, former teacher or fellow traveller might pursue you – all have same sweet intent. You could be attracted to a former book or belief. No harm in love or book; these will “fall away” in two weeks. Wednesday/Thursday are romantic – Wednesday, at best, offers “crippled love.” Thursday gives sweet, smooth success. Tackle work, Friday/Saturday.

August 14 - 20, 2011 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Plug away at a pile of work. Start nothing new before Aug. 26 – stick to routine chores. DO NOT buy equipment. A former financial situation/opportunity, sexual “opening,” lifestyle opportunity, health concern or research project could return. All these are viable and blessed with mild good luck, as long as they don’t involve dishonesty or immorality (e.g., a chance to fall for that same married person again). Errands, friends and communications fill Sunday to Tuesday: Sunday best. Stop, think Wednesday. Rest, improve home Thursday. Romantic notions Friday/Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A month of meetings, opposition and opportunity continues. The most productive of these will have a link to the past. A former business associate, spouse or serious lover, might return – with a good outcome, so welcome them – unless the situation’s unethical (e.g., you or that former spouse have re-married). Work demands a lot of communication, bits and pieces, travel now to Sept. 18 – until Aug. 26, make lists, check schedules, etc. Start nothing new before that date. Shop Sunday, not Monday/Tuesday. Safety, Wednesday! Good friends, talks Thursday. Home, Friday/Saturday. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your energy and charm surge Sunday to Tuesday, and the whole period’s filled with contentment. Romance is around you also, so Sunday, especially, could trigger something sweet! (You can be effectively assertive this day.) However, don’t start any big new relationships or projects of any kind before Aug. 26. Stick with past or ongoing affairs. Work is easy, co-workers affectionate, but delays and mistakes are rife, so double-check here. Take care with money Wednesday – shopping, collecting money much luckier Thursday. Friday/ Saturday are for friends, travel, gab sessions. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
