We need to raise level of dikes

Editor: I don’t usually write letters to the editor but I do want to thank the ex-mayors for their concern about the potential for devastating floods in the Fraser Valley. One discussion point puzzled me, though, and that is riverbed gravel removal as flood prevention. This plan doesn’t stand up to serious scrutiny. Even if we remove a significant amount of gravel from one part of the Fraser River, the water flow in next year’s freshet will quickly fill the hole and the river level will be affected very little, if at all. Logic suggests that we would have to remove riverbed gravel from north of Hope to the Strait all at once —something I am not suggesting—to have any impact on river levels. In fact, removing gravel from one part of the riverbed may result in unintended consequences. The gravel removal site will change the flow of water and river dynamics further downstream. I wonder if any credible group has done any studies on how the river might change due to the present process of gravel removal. The flooding in Alberta and the quirky weather in

the U.S., as well as wetter weather in B.C., is probably the new normal as the earth’s climate continues to change. In B.C., when we couple global warming with the mountain pine beetle devastation and poor logging practices, serious flooding in the Fraser River basin is almost inevitable. The most effective river management we can do is to strengthen, extend and raise the level of the dike system on the Fraser River throughout the whole Lower Mainland. Otherwise, I fear that we will encounter a dike-topping spring freshet sooner rather than later. Doug Astle Chilliwack

Need a light at Wells Road Editor: I am writing this letter in response to your recent article in the July 4 issue of theTimes. Since the opening of the Evans Road flyover, traffic in this area has increased significantly. The traffic on Evans Road at around 4 p.m. onward is terrible. Thus making it impossible to turn left off of Wells Road, which makes the traffic on Wells Road back up almost to Meadow Lark Street. The speed at which these cars are travelling at is going to cause a severe accident at the corner. There needs to be a light put up at that intersection. Also, since making

Knight Road a no-truck route, now the trucks are travelling onWells Road. This used to be a very quiet residential area, but now with all the increased traffic this is no longer a quiet area. I believe that the Chilliwack council and staff need to look at put a signal light on this corner before a accident occurs. Did the council not think that traffic was going to increase in this area? As a taxpayer, I would like city council to look into this matter and reconsider on putting a signal light at this corner. Rita Baumeister Chilliwack

She wants her flowers back Editor: On the night of June 29 someone decided that they needed a clump of beautiful blood red asiatic lillies more than I did, and stole them from my front yard. To the person who took them, I will give you back the green-handled wooden spoon you dug them up with. I live on Williams Street, you know where. I want them back! Shelley Roberts Chilliwack
