Griz ready for historic kick off

Fastpitch boys The Chilliwack Vipers, the reigning provincial champion U16 boys fastpitch team, needs new players born between 1997 and 1999 for the 2013 season. Twelve Vipers have been selected to play on the last two BC Summer Games teams, four have played on Team BC at the Western Canadian Games and four have been invited to try out for the U21 provincial team that will compete at the international championship in Saskatoon next summer. The team will take part in local tournaments and try to return to the Western Canadian Championships. A tryout will be held Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. Email chilliwackvipers@hotmail.com to register and for more details. There is no cost.

Royal visit The Chilliwack Chiefs host the Powell River Kings Friday at 7 p.m. at Prospera Centre. The Chiefs then hit the road to take on the Surrey Eagles

UFV soccer The UFV Cascades men’s and women’s soccer squads each play home games next weekend at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack. The women play the University of Manitoba Friday at 5 p.m. and the University of Winnipeg Saturday, again at 5 p.m.

The men play right after the women’s games. They take on the University of Saskatchewan Friday and the University of Alberta Saturday. Both games start at 7:15 p.m.

After dropping their opener last week 24-0 to the number-one ranked team in the province, the Mission secondary Roadrunners, the Grizzlies have learned what it will take to compete at the high school level, according to head coach Laurie Smith. “Our practices have been getting much better,” he said. “I’m confident that we’ve got the right attitude and the right work ethic.” Ranked fifth in the province, Robert Bateman is no slouch, but Smith said his team should be able to give them a run for their money. “We’re looking to win, obviously, and either way it will be a very competitive game,” he said. One thing’s certain: There is no shortage of anticipation for the game. “We’ve been telling them that this is basically their Super Bowl,” Smith said. “This is the first high school football game in 30 years. It’s a big deal and it’s the first time all their family and friends and kids from school will be watching them. “I know that the kids are excited and also nervous about it,” he continued. “There’s a lot of chatter on Facebook about how excited they are.” Smith is hoping for a large crowd for the game, but admits that he doesn’t quite know what to expect. “ I ’v e g o t m y f i n g e r s c r o s s e d t h a t i t ’s a b i g crowd,” he said. “ We’ve been promoting it for weeks and months so we’re hoping for the best.” ◗ Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Exhibition Field. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and children. There will be a pre-game tailgate party and half-time entertainment.
