staff reporter

For a hero, Jason Donascimento has a lot of things going on. The fabricator by trade is doing some home renovations, recently had his wisdom teeth pulled out and also proposed to his girlfriend, Michelle, just before Christmas. And it was because of that engagement that the New Westminster resident and 1995 St. Thomas More Collegiate graduate found himself in a situation where he did a pretty heroic deed. It was the afternoon of Jan. 2, and Donascimento had to stop by Leonardo Jewellers in Metropolis at Metrotown to get Michelle’s ring sized correctly. The Phan family has run the store for the past eight years, and Donascimento has been a frequent customer, even being featured on a store promotion last year during the Movember cancer research fundraising campaign. Because it was a quiet afternoon, the only people in the store were co-owner Hong Phan, a burly customer who wanted to look at some gold chains, and Donascimento. “This guy, he had to be 6-4 or bigger,” said Donascimento. “He was fidgety, and something just didn’t seem right to me. He kept on wanting to look at the chains, and she was hesitant to take it out for him. I was looking at some watches, but I kept looking over to (Hong) and the guy. “She finally gave it to him, but as soon as he got it, he bolted.” That’s when Donascimento, who played high school football for coach K.C. You could’ve gotten hurt.’’’ That thought didn’t occur to Donascimento, who shrugs off suggestions that he did

Saturday’s snow may be followed up by more this week, with Tuesday’s forecast suggesting some flurries before Burnaby’s usual wet winter weather sets in this weekend. That makes this week the perfect time for Burnaby residents to earn their wings. Residents are invited to take part in Burnaby’s Snow Angel program by adopting a sidewalk for a neighbour in need and keeping it clear for them over the winter. This year, Burnaby’s program has two additional contacts – North Burnaby Pathfinders and, in Central Burnaby, the Kingsway Imperial Neighbourhood Association. Burnaby Mountain Secondary, in North Burnaby, and the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House Association are still looking for volunteers for their respective areas of the city, as they have during the past two years. Anyone who volunteers to be a snow angel receives a pin and a certificate of recognition from the city. High school students can use the program for their volunteer hours, and the city issues letters to students’ schools. But being a snow angel isn’t the only way Burnaby residents can be good neighbours this winter. ◆ Keep sidewalks and driveways

City firefighter makes final cut in TV battle Christina Myers staff reporter

Is Canada’s best handyman right here in Burnaby? He could be – but we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out. Burnaby firefighter Todd Wynes, 43, is one of the 12 finalists battling it out on Canada’s Handyman Challenge, a new show on HGTV that premiered last Tuesday. Wynes’ lips are sealed about what will happen in the upcoming episodes and how he fares against the competitors from across the country. But one thing is certain: his skills must be impressive to have gotten him past hundreds of hopefuls from across the country into a final group of only a dozen competitors. “I think they had maybe 700 people apply for the Vancouver (tryouts),” said Wynes, noting that additional tryouts took place in eastern and central Canada. It all began when the wife of a co-worker spotted the tryout information and immediately suggested that Wynes, known among his fellow firefighters for his handyman skills, should check it out. The first step was a short application explaining why he should be considered, which wife Kerri Gilmour helped with. The application proved persuasive, and

he made it to the next round: going before the judges with a hand-built project to prove his skills. “You had to make something out of a four-by-eight (foot) sheet of plywood. I made that at home, and then brought it in,” he recalls. “I finally went in (to the judging room). I was the last one to go in, and I had waited hours and hours, and then you stand there in front of (the judges) Mike Holmes, Bryan Baeumler, and Scott McGillivray, and they take a look at it and tell you if they like it, what they think of it.” “Yeah, you’re pretty nervous,” he adds with a laugh. But, his skill showed in the custom toolbox that he had designed and constructed. “They told me they loved it, right off the bat, and (asked) could I make two more of them.” The first episode follows him and fellow West Coast hopefuls as they pass through the next challenge: building a functioning garden gate in just two hours and working on a complicated crown moulding project. Just four were chosen, and Wynes was among them. “Yeah, that was pretty exciting,” he said. As to how he’ll do in upcoming episodes, Wynes is mum but will say that, so far, everything has been a lot of fun. Handyman Page 4

Residents are reminded not to use warm or hot water to clear ice or snow. The city advises that people keep a shovel and a bag of salt handy in the winter, pile snow on their property when shovelling, keep an emergency kit for their homes and cars, keep children off snow piles or roadside snow banks, check on neighbours in need of assistance, and take transit during bad weather whenLarry Wright/burnaby now ever possible. Development costs on the rise for Burnaby in 2012 Building permits in Burnaby are set to increase this year by an average of 2.6 per cent. Rezoning application fees for the first 1,700 square metres of a site are increasing from $1,678 to

“Because it’s a challenge, that’s difficult. You have 20 minutes to complete something. That changes everything – you just have to get going,” he said. Wynes, a Coquitlam resident, said he learned most of his handyman skills from his father, and then over the years he honed his talents by working on various home renovations. Aside from the projects and challenges, the best part of being involved, says Wynes, is meeting the well-known judges, each of whom hosts their own popular shows on HGTV. “They were awesome, they were super nice,” he said. “It was just nice to meet them, they were great guys.” When asked if the show may be an opening into a new career as celebrity handyman, Wynes laughs. “I’m pretty happy as a firefighter,” he said. He’s based out of the No. 5 station, working in the technical rescue division. As for that toolbox that got him through to the next round, Wynes has high hopes for it: it’s been signed by the three celebrity judges, and he’s hoping to auction it off at the upcoming firefighters charitable ball to help fund a hot lunch program for kids from lowincome families. The show, which is being hosted by Jillian Harris of The Bachelorette fame, runs every Tuesday at 10 p.m. Episode 2 aired last night, and episode 3 will air next Tuesday, Jan. 24. follow us on

Sunday opening is just the first among needed reforms for B.C.’s antiquated Liquor Distribution Branch and related alcohol laws. Restaurants receive no discount on liquor whatsoever, adding up to $50 wines at many tables across the Lower Mainland.

Establishments are also heavily limited as to what they can sell with liquor – there are no liquor licences for movie theatres, for instance, a common sight in other provinces. (Mind you, we don’t support beer in movie theatres – it’s bad enough having a drunk next to you at a hockey game.) While outright privatization, the path Alberta followed, may not be the best route, the status quo has become untenable. It’s time for the government to raise a glass to change.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Mark-ins’ the wrong approach Dear Editor:

Re: On their mark, Burnaby NOW, Jan. 13. When the Burnaby Teachers Association holds a “mark-in,” I think they are doing a disservice to parents and the public. As a parent, I am very appreciative of the work teachers do and their commitment to their students. However, I think it is insulting to parents when they communicate to us that we need to be educated about their workload. I think parents know that teachers mark at night, prepare lessons and lead extra-curricular activities. There is no doubt that teaching requires more hours per week than other occupations.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dog owners deserve more Dear Editor:

Re: Remember leash laws, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Jan. 11. I am a homeowner and dog owner in Burnaby. There are thousands of dog-owning taxpayers in Burnaby. Our taxes (including licence fees) pay for the exceptional upkeep of Burnaby parks, including Confederation Park, its new state-of-the-art track and the wellmaintained and drained play fields that are now off-leash. The huge off-leash area at Confederation Park is basically a fenced swamp. When dog owners complain to the city, they dump in another layer of bark mulch, which in short time breaks down and makes the swamps even deeper. Since our parks are meant for multiple uses, then the users of the off-leash area are just as entitled to a properly maintained, drained and clean environment as the rest of the park users. Until then, there will be dog owners who will use the maintained areas of the park that they also pay for. Liz Engel, Burnaby

The stories that matter Dear Editor:

My thanks go out to David Starr, principal of Edmonds Community School, and

author of From Bombs to Books: The remarkable stories of refugee children and their families at an exceptional Canadian school. I recently had the pleasure of reading his exceptional new book about the past and present of the Edmonds area and the struggles and triumphs of its students, parents and staff. Having grown up in this diverse and welcoming neighbourhood, it was like reading about my own East Burnaby backyard on one page and then being whisked away to a war-torn part of the world on another. The story of Byrne Creek Secondary, Burnaby’s first community secondary school, is also an integral part of this engrossing, must-read narrative. We need more local writers like Mr. Starr to share our stories and shine a spotlight on the successes of our amazing schools and citizens. Where is there an annual ranking of our schools for things like perseverance, courage, determination, generosity, progress and the strength of the human spirit? Personally, I encourage organizations like the Fraser Institute to take their eyes off of cold, detached numbers long enough to open Principal Starr’s intimate book and get to know some of the flesh-and-blood learners, mothers, fathers and educators that make Edmonds a top-notch community and a top-notch community school by the measures that truly matter. Harman Pandher, Burnaby school trustee

Pipeline: Debate not waning continued from page 6

much greater impact on the same “national economic interest” that Ottawa professes to put at paramount importance. Now, the environmentalist side of this issue isn’t immune to criticism either. Opponents of the pipeline are trying to demonize companies like Enbridge, and some want to shut down the Alberta tar sands altogether. But really, how realistic is it to expect Alberta or the federal government (even if the NDP were in power) to close an industry that is providing enormous amounts of money into our economy – money that funds the health and education systems, among other things? And the environmental movement, in its zeal to demonize the oil industry, hasn’t explained an alter-

native to replace a product that plays such a huge role in how the entire world functions. Some (but certainly not all) environmentalists decry everything to do with oil, and then climb into their cars, purchase manufactured goods or fly in planes to attend conferences on the environment. The emotions and language in the Enbridge pipeline debate won’t calm down anytime soon. The two sides will engage in increasingly bitter exchanges of that overheated rhetoric we’ve witnessed already. But in the end, the odds of this project going ahead appear to be somewhat remote to me. The main obstacle to the pipeline’s approval is not the environmental movement, but rather the

considerable opposition of First Nations. Without First Nations support, large industrial projects have little chance of proceeding on land they claim as their hereditary territory. It’s likely the Northern Gateway project will ultimately be determined by the Supreme Court of Canada, several years from now. And by then, it will be interesting to see how much China has increased its financial stake in our country and what that impact will be on our “national economic interest.” I’m betting it’s going to be a lot more substantive than the American money flowing to Canadian environmental groups. Thief: Store owner thanks customer right thing. … As a teacher, it’s good to hear when your former students are doing good things.” Also thankful is Hong’s son, Quang Phan, who contacted the Burnaby NOW to tell about Donascimento’s good deed. “It was a really nice gesture,” said Quang. “The (other) guy was huge, but (Jason) didn’t hesitate. He helped out and we’re very thankful. “Jason is a repeat customer, so we know him pretty well. For him to risk his life to help us, we’re very happy.” The Phan family is planning to do a little something for Donascimento, perhaps in the form of a gift certificate, but that won’t change Donascimento. “It’s all good,” he said. “I felt good doing it. It’s not like I was overwhelmed. I saw a chance to help somebody, and it seemed like the right thing to do.” www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

They all had a great time.” As part of the program, the students, from various grades, attend a leadership

Keeping violence at bay in the workplace ON MY BEAT

R

Janaya Fuller-Evans

eporter Janaya FullerEvans caught up with Kevin Calder of K. Calder & Associates, a licensed security consultant specializing in workplace violence intervention since 2006. He works out of his home office in Burnaby. Burnaby NOW: How long have you been a Burnaby resident? Kevin Calder: I have lived in Burnaby for the past five years.

BN: What do you do? KC: I am a licensed security consultant specializing in workplace violence assessments and management. I am formally trained in investigating, assessing and managing threats of workplace, school and domestic violence, stalking and threats from gangs and organized crime. I develop plans to minimize violence risk and liaise with my clients and other professionals to manage individual cases. I also provide training, and program development support in compliance with WorkSafe B.C.’s violence in the workplace regulations. BN: How and when did you get into workplace violence management? KC: As a B.C. sheriff, I was a founding member of the B.C. Sheriff’s integrated threat assessment unit and the Justice Institute’s Threat Management Centre of Excellence in the Sheriff’s Academy in 2002. BN: Who uses your services? KC: I have worked with every level of government (municipal, provincial and federal) in the development and delivery of training, consulting and assessments. I have also worked with the various health authorities and public transportation sectors in minimizing the risk of workplace violence. I also work with private sector companies and with individuals who have identified individuals who may pose a threat of violence in the workplace and in the campus environment. BN: What experience do you have that led you to this particular career? KC: I had an opportunity to receive training from various organizations, including the

Managing threats: Kevin Calder is a licensed security consultant who specializes in workplace violence intervention. He works with government bodies and private-sector companies to help deal with potential workplace violence.

RCMP, FBI, U.S. Secret Service and the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals. This training prioritizes the need to proactively assess individuals and situations where a risk of targeted or predatory violence may be present. With the B.C. Sheriff’s integrated threat assessment unit, I was responsible for conducting assessments and operational plans for high-security and highprofile court cases, such as the Robert Pickton trial and various gang trials, and threats directed at the judiciary, court participants and family and civil court cases. The threats posed in highly emotional family cases were often greater than high-security criminal cases. I have participated in the completion of hundreds of assessments since leaving Sheriff Services in 2006. BN: Describe your hardest day on the job. KC: Working with clients who do not recognize the seri-

ousness of the situation they may be currently facing. The frustration of attempting to implement preventative measures to reduce risk and provide a safe work environment in this tough economic environment. Knowing that an individual may pose a threat of hurting themselves or others, and recognizing that at the end of the day, the individual is ultimately responsible for their decisions and actions. BN: What makes the job worthwhile? KC: The focus on prevention and support. The ability to assist both potential victims and perpetrators through the implementation of various strategies to reduce the intent, capability or vulnerability related to violence risk. BN: What are some of the drawbacks? KC: There is a lack of recognition on the part of some clients for the potential of significant violence.

Although statistically the chance of a workplace homicide is very low, each case must be assessed on its specific circumstances and context. An individual case and associated individuals involved may present as high risk, even though historically the risk is minimal. Knowing that some of those who pose a threat are in need of significant support and are not getting assistance. There is an over-reliance on the individual who poses a threat and may be in crisis to make good decisions. BN: Based on your experience, what’s essential to managing volatile situations in the workplace? KC: The early identification of behaviours, individuals and situations of concern is critical. There is a range of behaviours including inappropriate, bullying, harassing, threatening and actual violence that can cause significant fear, anxiety and disruption in the workplace.

BN: What should employees do if they feel they’re in a dangerous situation? KC: They should consider developing a greater internal capacity to investigate, assess and manage the full range of disruptive workplace behaviour. In most cases, internal strategies will manage the majority of potential risk. In serious cases, companies should have a comfort level to reach out to external professionals who can provide additional support and strategies. External support could include police, mental health, counselling and security and threat management professionals, amongst others. In serious cases, all of these professionals can draw on expertise and resources to minimize the risk of an actual act of serious violence. Heartburn Reflux High Blood Pressure?

The USDA now recommends to eat 50% alkaline food (vegetables, legumes, salads, fruit). Health professionals suggest 80% alkaline food. Unfortunately, North American people eat 95% acidic food (meat, noodles, rice, bread, pastries, sweets, junk food). If you cannot change your diet to USDA’s 50% or closer to 80% alkaline food, consider to supplement with a natural health product that helps to increase your pH alkaline level close to a healthy 7. Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, has no side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkaline balanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box. ! Reflux gave me a sore throat and I could not sing in the church choir anymore. After taking Bell #39 I have no more reflux and rejoice in singing again. Helene Giroux, 65, Quebec, QC ! Have family history of heartburn. For last 10 years I suffered a lot with acid reflux. It’d be hard to pin down the components that make Simon Fraser University one of the country’s most family-friendly employers when there’s so many to choose from. Generous benefit packages, on-site daycares, expanded family-friendly living opportunities, top-ups for maternity and paternity leaves, and significant opportunities for recreation are just a few of the factors that gave SFU a spot in this year’s top 20 list, compiled annually by MediaCorp Canada Inc., a publisher of employment guides. Making headlines Xtra!’s second newsmaker of the year.

Alert neighbour saves the day

HERE & NOW

T

he Burnaby NOW wasn’t the only newspaper to focus on the school district’s antihomophobia policy as the story of 2011. Xtra!, a publication for Canada’s gay and lesbian community, declared the Burnaby school board as newsmaker of the year for passing an anti-homophobia policy for schools. “Despite a very vocal but small opposition – when it came right down to it – we were doing the right thing that was not only going to benefit those students in the LGBT community, but would make a healthier school district overall, and a healthier community,” school board chair Larry Hayes told Xtra! In summer, trustees passed policy 5.45 to protect staff and students from homophobic harassment. Parents’ Voice, the group that formed in opposition to the policy, was named

Here’s a lovely tale sent in by NOW reader Gerda Wever, who saved her neighbours’ home from destruction over the holidays. Wever, who lives near the base of Burnaby Mountain, was out for her daily run with her two dogs recently, when she heard the faint sound of an alarm. The noise seemed to be coming from the home of her neighbours, Jim and Angela. “I went up, rang the bell, no reply. I put my ear to the door, and sure enough, the sound came from inside,” Gerda wrote in a note to the NOW. Jim and Angela have a lawn sign with their alarm company’s name and number, so Wever gave the dispatcher a call. “The lady on the phone was dismissive, saying there were no signals coming in from that residence. I asked if she would call Jim anyway, just in case. She suggested that I was making a mountain out of a molehill,” Gerda said.

But Gerda figured the dispatcher must have called after all, because a few minutes later, Jim’s mom (who also lives with the couple) arrived. Shortly after, three fire trucks came roaring down the street, and when Gerda went out to see what had happened, the firefighter in charge slapped her on the back so hard he almost sent her flying. “Good job! You are a great neighbour,” he exclaimed. Apparently, the mother had left a pot of soup on the stove and went out. “The firefighters told me that had I not called, the house would have burned to the ground. I phoned the alarm company back, just to say, ‘Hey lady, next time, try to be a little nicer when people are trying to do the right thing,’” Gerda said. “There was significant smoke damage, and Jim and Angela are still dealing with that, but they were so happy that a fire was prevented.” Jim’s mom repaid Gerda with a pot of fried rice, wine and cookies. Thanks to Gerda, you’re reading this as an anecdote in my column and not a disaster story on the front page.

See the beauty inside Season’s Greetings T

wo of my kids used to spend way too much time in front of the mirror. I told them to wash their faces, brush their teeth and comb their hair (once). If you spend too much time worrying and fussing over your looks, you can be sure that no one else is looking at you as closely as you do. I’ve had otherwise healthy patients who were unhappy with minor imperfections. Some would go to great lengths to correct them. This was great for physicians who perform cosmetic procedures, but often the patients were not totally happy with the results. We can focus excessively on some feature of our appearance (such as a freckle or mole, our height or weight, our body type, the colour of our skin or hair, the straightness or curl of our locks, the shape and symmetry of our facial features, the size of our ears and the appearance of our feet), and that obsessive attention can be a source for unhappiness. TASTE

Tips for healthier eating ON COOKING

H

Chef Dez

ow are you doing with your new year’s resolution to eat healthier? It’s amusing that the old saying goes “never trust a skinny chef,” implying that the chef’s food can’t be very good if the creator of the food him/herself doesn’t eat very much of it. A skinny chef, rather, should be looked upon as one who can not only control their passion for food but also knows how to make healthy food taste great. Not only am I conscious of what (and how much) I am putting into my body; we also have a home gym to help facilitate a balanced, healthy lifestyle. Apparently, in order to lose one pound per week, we need to increase the number of calories burned by 500 per day, while keeping our diet at the current level.

This can also be interpreted as we can alternatively decrease our intake by 500 calories, while keeping our exercising (or lack thereof) at the current level, for the same effect. The increase in your exercise level, however, is the better choice of the two as it will lead to better cardiovascular health and an increase in lean muscle tissue, among many other great benefits. A great way to reduce the number of calories you eat is to consume what are classified as negative-calorie or zero-calorie foods. Some examples of these would be celery, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, garlic and cucumbers. Of course what you put on these foods, or how you cook them, can add a lot of calories. A good habit to get into is to read the ingredient lists of premade prepackaged foods. A recent trip to the grocery store to buy some “healthy” cereal revealed that there are a lot of choices that appear to be good for you on the outside, but reading the ingredient list revealed that many were high in sugar. One is better off

buying rolled oats (not the instant variety) or 100 per cent shredded wheat and adding some fresh fruit, skim milk, and maybe a zero-calorie sweetener such as Splenda or Stevia. I believe the main reason why “diets” don’t work is because as soon as one eliminates something from their regular eating routine, they want it more. It is human nature to always yearn for something the more we can’t have it. I feel that it is so important to have one splurge meal per week. If you get a craving for something unhealthy, just say to yourself, “I am going to have that for my splurge meal this week.” The battle is mostly mental. I don’t diet – my occupation can’t allow for that, so what I do instead is lifestyle: making a choice to eat healthy as much as possible because chances are I will live longer and have a better quality of life. Don’t be overwhelmed by the long-term goal. Take it day by day and just focus on what counts: today. Find out more about Chef Dez at www.chefdez.com.

Comeback sinks No. 1 Mariners Tom Berridge sports editor

Douglas College pulled off a rare three-set comeback victory, knocking off the No. 1 Vancouver Island University Mariners in men’s volleyball on Saturday. The five-set victory pulled the Royals into a first-place tie in overall wins with the Mariners atop the PacWest standings. The Vancouver Island school has played two fewer games than the 12-4 Royals. “It was good,” said fifthyear Douglas outside hitter Jeff Taylor. “In the five years I’ve been at Douglas, it was the first time we’ve come back from two sets down.” The win tied the PacWest league series between the two teams at 2-2. It followed a 3-0 loss to the Mariners the day before at Douglas. On Saturday, the Royals dropped the opening set 25-14. The home team then fell behind by two games following a 28-26 loss to the hard-hitting Mariners. But the Royals never lost their structure, keeping balls in the air and setting up an attack of their own behind Taylor’s strong hitting and the effective tandem blocking of Rex Fenton and 6-7 middle Mark Vanderwal. Overall digs leader Jordan Or, a Moscrop high school grad, was also a big factor in keeping the ball alive for Douglas. “We knew we had to win this game to be considered a top five team in the country,” said Taylor,

a Burnaby North grad. “Now, I think coming back from 0-2 against the No. 1 team in the country, other teams will respect us more.” Douglas took the turnaround third set by a resounding 25-13 score. The Royals led for most of the way in the following set, getting a 25-23 win on Kaleb Dawes’ final service winner. In the tiebreaker,

Douglas fell behind 3-0 but rallied to pull ahead 8-6 at the crossover on a pair of point-winning blocks by Vanderwal. A Brendan Paterson kill made the score 1410 in favour of Douglas. Andrew Robson then completed the comeback for the Royals with a gamewinning block. Douglas head coach Brad Hudson said the team is learning how to do those

little things that it takes to win the big games. The Royals opened the volleyball season, splitting their weekend series matches with the University of the Fraser Valley, Capilano and Vancouver Island before closing the fall portion of the season on an 8-0 run. “We showed a lot of patience and heart staying the course. Today we were able to find what we

needed (to win),” Hudson added. “This group has grown together. … They know how to win these games now.” Evidence of that came in the third set when the Douglas defence appeared to stiffen and return the ball with some effective shotmaking. Taylor led the charge back with 10 set winners Douglas Page 22

Clan women upset GNAC hoop leader Tom Berridge

Simon Fraser University kept its unbeaten home record intact with a pair of Great Northwest conference wins in women’s basketball over Alaska schools this weekend. The Clan defeated winless Alaska Fairbanks 91-66 on Saturday following an earlier 7769 upset victory over conferenceleading Alaska Anchorage on Thursday night in Burnaby. The win Thursday was a huge one for the Clan and the first conference loss this season for the visiting eighth-ranked Seawolves.

“It feels great because we know they’re ranked eighth in the nation, and we’ve been struggling a bit lately,” said SFU guard Marie-Line Petit in a school press release. “It’s the biggest game we’ve played this year.” Kristina Collins led the Clan with 18 points, including five of seven from beyond the arc. Erin Chambers added 15 points, while Chelsea Reist and Carla Wyman chipped in with 13 points apiece. Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe posted yet another double-double, with 11 points and 15 rebounds. SFU overcame a slow 13-3 start, scoring 16 of the next 21 points.

The two teams then battled to the finish. Midway through the second half, SFU took control following a 12-1 run, opening up an 11-point lead. The Clan led by as many as 13 points at one point in the match. On Saturday, SFU improved its NCAA Division II record to 5-2 with the win over Fairbanks. Raincock-Ekunwe finished the game with a season-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. Collins continued her hot shooting, draining five three-pointers. “This win gives us a lot of confidence. Both games this weekend we shot the ball over 50 per cent

on three-pointers, which is something we really needed to do. We also sunk a lot more free throws, which I definitely think is helping us,” said SFU head coach Bruce Langford in the release. Raincock-Ekunwe knocked down 11 of her 12 chances at the charity stripe. The Clan junior also leads the conference in offensive and defensive rebounding, averaging just over 14 boards per game – the only player in double figures. The wins lifted the Clan into third place in the conference, just one win behind both Seattle Pacific and Anchorage. SFU is on the road this weeekend.

The New Westminster Hyacks pulled off a pair of upsets at the Top 10 shootout girls’ basketball tournament in Coquitlam. The No. 10-ranked Hyacks defeated No. 6 Handsworth 67-62 to finish in eighth place in the 16team tournament, avenging one of only five losses to top-flight teams this season. Second team all-star guard Ariana Sider led the Hyacks with 25 points, while Meriam Ali chipped in with 16 points for New West. Manisha Kandola, with eight points, was the Hyacks’ player of the game. The Hyacks opened the tournament with a 5854 win over No. 7 South Kamloops. Sider again had 25 points to lead the team. Sharmaine Haley, with nine points, earned player of the game for New West. On Friday, New West lost 57-45 to No. 2-ranked Oak Bay. Later in the day, the Hyacks lost 60-51 to No. 5 Maple Ridge in the shootout at Centennial. Sider scored 19 points and Jetti McLaughlin added 10 in the loss to Oak Bay. Sider and Ali netted 25 and 21 respectively against Maple Ridge. “We can play with anybody, but we can’t play 40 minutes. We could have won that one,” said Hyacks head coach Doug Woodward about the loss to Oak Bay. Rebounding appears to be the Achilles heel of the Hyacks, but switching to a man-to-man defence against Handsworth had a positive outcome, added Woodward. “We were fine,” he said. “We’re just not working hard enough in practice. This year, no one is pushing anyone. These kids aren’t used to playing competitive basketball at a high level.” No. 4 Brookswood upset the top-ranked Riverside Rapids 68-64 in the championship final of the Top Shootout Page 22

Clan third at nat duals

STM drops Catholic final to AB Carney The St. Thomas More Knights will likely lose their hard-won B.C. AA No. 1 ranking following a 59-51 loss to Archbishop Carney in the final of the B.C. Catholic boys’ basketball tournament on Saturday. Carney, a AA honourable mention, squeaked by St. Ann’s Academy 52-49 in the semifinals. The Knights earned a berth into the finals with a resounding 56-27 victory over eventual third-place finisher Immaculata. STM led Carney 15-7 at halftime. Andrew Morris and Denzel Laguerta were both named to the all-tournament first team following the final. Jalen Jana was a second team pick, while Mikey Carney was an honourable mention. Andrew Wu won a $500 scholarship from HSBC.

The Simon Fraser University women’s wrestling team placed third at the National Wrestling Coaches Association national duals in Illinois last week. St. Thomas More Collegiate grad Laura Gordon of New Westminster won her 136-pound weight division over Rachel Shannon of Lindenwood University. The two schools tied 19-19 following the meet.

Jr. Chancellors

STM’s JV girls’ basketball team won a junior Chancellor title this weekend. The Knights edged West Vancouver 45-43 in the girls’ final behind an MVP performance from Allexis Lewellyn and first team allstar Meghan Ho. STM posted one-sided wins over Enver Creek and Terry Fox to advance to the tournament final. The junior boys were not as lucky, losing in the Chancellor final 70-59 to Semiahmoo. Reese Morris and J.J. Deslauriers were both named to the all-first team. STM knocked off King George 49-34 to advance to the tournament final. The Knights got by David Thompson on the opening day of the tourney 56-49.

Oiler out for two more weeks In NHL news, Edmonton Oilers star rookie centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is expected to be out for one to two more weeks with a shoulder problem. Nugent-Hopkins hurt himself in a freak accident during a game in Chicago on Jan. 2.

Shootout: Tigers third continued from page 21

10 shootout, ending the Port Coquitlam school’s 25game winning streak. Vancouver independent York House, ranked third in the province, finished in third place following a 62-54 upset victory over Oak Bay. Burnaby’s Alisha Roberts scored a game-high 21 points for York House. Roberts also led all scorers with 25 points in a 71-55 semifinal loss to Riverside.

Great eight NLL debut Kevin Crowley registered eight points in his National Lacrosse League debut with the Philadelphia Wings. The first overall pick of the NLL draft scored three goals and added five assists for the Wings in a 22-12 loss to the Rochester Knighthawks in the season opener for both clubs on Saturday.

at the net, while big digs by Or and Devon Heppner kept the Royals ahead when the scoreline began to tighten in the late going. “We did have to overcome some adversity, but we had to own it (responsibility) and know we had to find something inside ourselves that brought us to the level we think we can play at,” Hudson said. Taylor believes the win will have a postive effect on the team going forward in preparation for the provincial championships. “In the next three weeks we have to get better,” Taylor said. “Hopefully, (the win) gives us momentum going into next week.” The Royals will host College of the Rockies in a two-match set in New Westminster on Saturday and Sunday.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
