bbotsford is the latest community hit in a robbery spree involving Subway sandwich shops across the Fraser Valley this week.

On Monday at 3:30 p.m. a suspect with a stocking pulled over his face entered the Subway in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way brandishing some kind of shiny, silver weapon, said Const. Ian MacDonald.

The man, described as a South Asian with a thin build, and up to five feet eight inches tall, grabbed cash from the restaurant’s till before fleeing.

Moyls missing since Dec. 18 P

olice are trying to locate a missing Abbotsford man.

Jonathan Mark Moyls was last seen by his family on Dec. 18 – although he made occasional phone contact with them after that.

However, at 10 a.m. on Jan. 25 the Abbotsford Police received a call concerning the 54-year-old man.

The APD were able to confirm Moyls had stayed at an Abbotsford hotel on Sumas Way until Dec. 19 but his – POLICE HANDOUT/FOR THE TIMES location since that date is The APD is trying to locate unknown.

Mission riding stretches to include Ashcroft and Lillooet ing, bounded on the west by Brander Road and the Sumas River in the east.

The new constituency will also stretch across an expansive geographical area to include Kent and Harrsion Hot Springs and then up through the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, absorbing the towns of Ashcroft, Lytton and Cache Creek, and into the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District including Subdivisions A and B and the Municipality of Lillooet.

The changes to the electoral map were made to keep about 100,000 residents in each riding.

Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission MP Randy Kamp said although Mission, the largest population in the new electoral district, will be well served in the new riding, it will be challenging for the elected MP to meet the demands created by the mix of demographics and large geographical area in the new constituency.

Kamp said it makes sense for him to continue to represent the Pitt-Meadows-Maple Ridge riding as he was born in and lives in Maple Ridge.

“But I’m a little disappointed because I enjoyed representing Mission,” he said.

he federal ridings of Abbotsford and Mission have been extensively redrawn with new changes planned for Canada’s electoral map.

The existing electoral district of Abbotsford has been divided with most of the urban portion of the riding remaining within the new boundaries.

However, a good portion of the rural area north of the City of Abbotsford has been incorporated into the new electoral district of Mission— Matsqui—Fraser Canyon, which straddles the Fraser River.

The new Abbotsford riding is bounded on the west by Mt. Lehman Road north to Maclure Road and runs in an easterly direction along Bateman, Straiton, McKee and Sumas Mountain roads and along the Sumas River east until Boundary Road.

The City of Abbotsford’s rural areas east of Bradner Road, south of Highway 1 and east of Mount Lehman Road will be absorbed into the Fort Langley-Aldergrove riding.

Mission is being dropped from its current riding that includes Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge.

Ex-cop fined $500 for lying about crash JENNIFER SALTMAN The Province

A

former Abbotsford Police officer offered a tearful apology Tuesday after admitting to lying about a crash he was involved in while driving his police vehicle.

“I apologize to . . .” Nathan Brown said, faltering.

“I just want to say that this wasn’t a true representation of myself or a reflection of the Abbotsford police, and I do apologize.”

Brown, 31, who began as a constable with the Abbotsford Police Department in 2006, was charged in October 2011 with obstructing justice. He pleaded guilty in B.C. Provincial Court in Abbotsford to the Motor Vehicle Act charge of making a false statement in an accident report, and was handed a fine.

On the afternoon and evening of April 14, 2011, Brown and a number of other officers gathered at an Abbotsford Police Association social event, where liquor was consumed.

During the evening Brown’s supervisors encouraged him not to drive home.

After they realized Brown had left, a supervisor drove by his house and noticed that his police-issued vehicle was in his driveway.

The next morning, around 6:30 a.m., Brown called the detachment to report that he had been in a minor accident with his police car.

He said that he had been leaving a McDonald’s drive-thru when he spilled coffee on himself and drove into a lamp standard.

“He led officers to believe this accident had just occurred,” said Crown prosecutor Brian Fell.

About six days after the incident, Brown asked for a meeting with his supervisors.

The meeting took place on April 26, 2011, during which Brown admitted to lying about when the accident had occurred.

He said that his description of the incident was correct, but it had actually happened on his way home from the association event.

He said he shouldn’t have driven home, but he did not believe he was impaired.

Brown was placed on administrative leave and an internal investigation was launched.

After a disciplinary hearing in March 2012 he was given a 10-day suspension without pay for discreditable conduct and fired for deceit. Brown had applied to the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner to have his dismissal reviewed and was granted a public hearing, but he abandoned his appeal in December.

The worst part for Brown, according to defence lawyer Maegan Richards, was losing a job that he truly loved. After he was fired, Brown and his family moved in with his in-laws in Castlegar and he now has a job completely unrelated to policing.

Richards said Brown excelled as a police officer, which showed in positive performance reviews.

He was described in letters of recommendation as being truthful and adhering to ethical and moral values.

The lie was completely out of character for Brown, Richards said.

Judge John Lenaghan agreed.

The defence had suggested a $1,000 fine, but under the circumstances, Lenaghan said he did not see a reason to treat Brown differently from any other member of the public and imposed a $500 fine, plus a mandatory $75 victim surcharge.

Fletcher’s career in education began in Mission in 1976 when he became a teacher/principal relief a t D e w d n e y, Fe r n d a l e and Silverdale elementary schools. He taught at Cherry

Hill from 1977 – 80 before moving into administration in 1980 when he became principal at Deroche. Since then he has been an administrator at several Mission schools, both elementary and secondary.

Fletcher served with distinction as district principal of the Aboriginal Program.

For the last seven months he has also taken over the duties of acting superintendent.

While maintaining this double role, Fletcher initiated an examination of the district’s fiscal management, opened discussions on the formation of a traditional elementary school and started a dialogue about restructuring the district’s high school configuration.

Solid work by unsung help S

omething I’ve grown to appreciate in my 18 years in this community is that things aren’t always as they appear, and that work behind the scene doesn’t get the recognition it often deserves.

I’ve grown to appreciate the selflessness of these community builders, and how they often deal with some of a community’s most challenging problems, while others are recognized publicly for doing their work.

It’s true about every community I suppose, but the point was really hammered home for me last week when I read local media accounts of the evacuation of 15 lowincome tenants from the Tessaro Villa apartments at 33412 Tessaro Cr., just west of Five Corners.

The media stories told about the building being a fire risk — among other things — and how it was populated by drug-using, welfare recipients who put little importance on things like laws, cleanliness, health or safety . . . and how their absentee landlords cared even less.

The stories talked of urine and feces in the hallways that were pockmarked by holes in the walls and lined by carpet so filthy it made workers retch.

The media reports talked about the lack of safety for these tenants, the city’s growing attention with police and fire service visits, and the subsequent city hall declaration that the building was unsafe, and the subsequent eviction notices.

Many upstanding community service groups were listed for their roles in the process that brought

Valley life about the building’s closure. And indeed these agencies do great work in our communities.

What none of these reports talked about was the people who actually went into the building and did the grunt work of hauling away the evicted tenants’ personal effects.

But those work-crew members sure had some stories of their own.

The HOME Society is an Abbotsford-based group of people that helps support folks in the community with special needs, and this agency has put together a work crew that does everything from mowing lawns for group homes, to delivering goods to those in need, to helping hoarders reclaim their lives.

I have worked for this agency on and off since its inception in 1995.

It was the HOME Society crew that pulled on their boots and gloves, plugged their noses, and went into that building to move out the majority of those tenants.

“It was horrible,” one of the crew members told me last week.

“There were needles on the ground, blood everywhere, and the smell was horrible. We were stepping over people and moving in the dark.”

One room, another crew worker

told me, was so covered in dog feces, except for the mattress the dogs slept on, that it was impossible to enter the room without stepping in feces.

He said it was so disgusting, they eventually decided to leave that room as it was.

“From one unit we hoofed 102 boxes down four flights of stairs before we saw any furniture,” said another crew member.

“The woman was a hoarder.”

The HOME Society work-crew members grimaced as they told the tale, of the four days they spent going up and down the stairs in our community’s underbelly, dealing with the kind of stuff none of us would ever dream of having to do; and that we often turn a blind eye to in our efforts to avoid it.

There are many “crews” of this nature working silently in the background who are not recognized in media stories or public accolades.

I’m certain I’m continuing this trend by not naming others who were involved in this move, and for that I apologize.

But today at least, I thank the HOME Society crew, and all their counterparts throughout Abbotsford and Mission, for taking on the unpleasant tasks they do – ones that no one else will.

Thanks for doing society’s thankless work. You are an invaluable commodity in our community.

Hopes Idle No More keeps moving Editor, the Times:

After reading Robert T. Rock’s last two letters to the Times regarding First Nations and the Idle No More movement, I felt compelled to offer my rebuttal.

His lack of relevant research presented to support his position, along with his prejudiced and inaccurate stereotyping of these people show his lack of knowledge on this topic.

It is ironic that the person whose letters consistently contain his own whining, would accuse others of whining. Nowhere does he mention what led to the Idle No More movement.

Instead his letters only share his ignorant and harmful views. The only statistic or ‘fact’ he points out is that 62 per cent of people agree with him. Is this to show us that he has a herd mentality?

It would have been more useful if he had given us his views on the questionable legality of the implementation by the federal government of bills C45 and C38, considering this was the impetus for the Idle No More movement.

Another relevant point he ignores is how these bills go against the UNDRIP (UN Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples). His letters only show he feels it’s okay to take for over 200 years and then not give back, as he considers that reverse racism.

Another foundation for taking axes Editor, the Times:

I’m sure that those ‘first time buyers’ out there looking to buy a new home will be very excited our provincial government is offering you some of my tax money to help you do that.

You are being offered $10,000 ‘tax free’ towards the cost of a new home that qualifies for the grant.

Of course all that happens is that the developer gets to charge you $10,000 more for that home, instead of reducing the

price by that same amount.

And I think that we can guess that these said developers are supporters of the provincial Liberals.

In short, my tax dollars go to the government, the government gives it to you and you obligingly give it to the developer.

On the other hand, maybe it’s all to do with the HST on new homes ending when BC returns to GST/PST on April 1 and the government loses its 7 per cent.

Either way it’s pretty sneaky.

Metro trashes chance for panel observer

bbotsford’s mayor and the chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District are dismayed with Metro Vancouver waste committee’s decision to deny the FVRD an observer on the independent expert panel overseeing the proposed waste-to-energy project.

Mayor Bruce Banman said he was “not surprised but sadly disappointed” by the committee’s decision.

“It’s a slap in the face and I expect better,” said Banman.

“They are supposed to apprise us of what they are doing, and they want to hide away behind closed doors.”

“FVRD staff need to be part of discussion to ask critical questions on the technology because Metro seems to have drunk the Kool-Aid.” However, Gaetz said she was pleased with the decision to set up the political liaison committee.

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan voted against forming a political liaison, saying it validates the FVRD’s concerns about air quality, which are likely more affected by the streams of car and truck traffic travelling though the valley. He argued it was critical that the experts be free to do their job.

Metro Vancouver is wrapping up its request for technology, and expects to meet with 33 potential proponents later this month.

his month marks the beginning of a peak season for airports all across Canada as families escape to warmer temperatures or take advantage of the snow and hit the slopes.

With more families traveling, there is often an increase in security screening-related issues however. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority offers these helpful tips to ensure a stress-free airport security screening: ■ Boarding pass and ID for every member of the family should be out and ready for the screening officer.

■ Everyone’s overcoats including suit jackets, blazers and sport jackets will need to be removed and placed in the bins provided.

B.C.’s new Family Day might be the perfect opportunity for parents and kids to get back to the farm.

Abbotsford’s multi-award winning Bakerview EcoDairy is offering parents, grandparents and children a special dairy adventure for the province’s first Family Holiday while supporting a great local cause.

Kids and youth up to age 18 can get a free dairy barn tour with donation of a non-perishable food item to the Abbotsford Food Bank on Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bakerview EcoDairy, 1356 Sumas Way, Abbotsford.

Seniors and adults can enjoy the same tour for an admission fee of $5 per person including tax; regular admission is normally between $7 to $9. Families will enjoy a short, fun, animated movie of Vicki, the talking cow, meet the Vitala cows in their cow-

comfort, five-star Mootel, watch Robbie the robot milk the cows, and peek at Avatar, the dairy’s anaerobic (manure) digester.

“This is a world-class, family-owned farm, and it is our way of introducing and rewarding families on their provincial day while supporting the local food bank whose needs are often even greater after the holiday season,” said Jill Maddigan of guest services, Bakerview EcoDairy.

Family Day guests at the EcoDairy can also enjoy the always free visits to the onsite animal exhibit and befriend the dairy’s adorable farm animals or watch goats frolicking on the roof, added Maddigan.

A PLACE FOR YOUTH TO BELONG “I love the AYC because it’s a place where you feel you can fit in” Andrew, AYC Youth The Abbotsford Youth Commission (AYC) exists to identify, promote, improve, increase, and provide services and programs for youth 12-18 in Abbotsford. One of the ways they do this is through their free drop-in youth centres located at Matsqui Recreation Centre (MRC) and Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC). Their centre at ARC is open Monday-Thursday 2:30-5:00pm, Friday’s from 2:30-10:00pm, and Saturdays from 4:00-11:00pm while the centre at MRC is open MondayThursday 2:30-4:30pm and Friday’s from 2:30-10:00pm.

The middle and high school years can be a tough time in the lives of many youth who are faced with changes, pressures, and new challenges. One thing is certain though-

Bullying is NOT a “part of growing up” And it is something no child or youth should ever have to encounter. There are four common types of bullying: • Physical - This involves hitting, pushing, any other form of physical violence, or damaging of property • Verbal- This includes name calling, teasing, homophobic or racist remarks • Social+Emotional (also referred to as Relational)- This includes

It’s estimated that peers are present 85% of the time when bullying occurs So what can you do if you see someone being bullied? Here are a few tips that can help support the person who is being bullied: • Tell the bully to stop- Don’t put yourself in danger- Speak up and stand up for others who are being bullied! Let them know that what they’re saying or doing is not cool.

Just be sure you don’t put yourself in danger • Don’t join in- Laughing at the person being bullied or joining in makes you a part of the problem • Tell someone- Tell an adult or help the victim do this.

You can offer to be a witness to what happened • Befriend the victim- Ignore the gossip and rumours. If it seems someone is being bullied and singled out, try to include them in your activities and make them feel welcome

Bullying will stop within 10 seconds most of the time when someone else steps in to be a friend to the victim (www.bullying.org).

In 2012 the two AYC youth centres saw a total of 985 different youth attending the after school dropin programs (Mon-Fri until 5pm) located at MRC and ARC. This was an increase of 32% compared to 2011 and they are looking at ways to increase this number further in 2013.

Besides the drop-in youth centres, the AYC offers a variety of other programs, many of which are completely free! They include Drop-in Basketball, Floor Hockey, Open Gym, Youth Focus, Just for Girls, and Guys Alive. Their registered (low-cost) programs consist of: Girls Nite Out, Guys Nite, Red Cross Babysitter Training, Food Safe, Employment Readiness, and Leadership Training.

o you feel cheated, ripped off or like you are getting the short end of the stick?

The psalmist (Psalm 73) looked around his little universe and saw that the wicked were prospering.

They were healthy and without any pain or trials in life. Life was good for them, they never seemed to get into trouble, never had any bad things happen to them. They had the looks, the fast cars, and the big houses. They drank like fish, smoked like chimneys yet never got cancer and never looked out of shape. They spoke behind the boss’s back, booked lots of

The psalmist starts thinking about how unfair life is and as a result he starts to get resentful and bitter. He has tried to live a godly life. He hasn’t slept around, cheated on his taxes or had a grow-op in his basement yet he can’t seem to buy a break. His marriage is on the rocks, he gets audited on an annual basis and his electrical bills are going through the roof. To put it bluntly – life sucks.

He may be looking at the wicked, but he is holding God to blame. How could He let this hap-

pen, why isn’t He zapping the bad guys blessing him? The whole story starts to collapse in on him and he considers ending it all. That is until he starts to see the wicked and their lifestyle from a different perspective.

Up to this point the psalmist is looking at the world from his own self-centred perspective. Grace wasn’t sufficient for him, he wanted more. He believed he deserved more and if God would only get his act together, it would all go his way. Halfway through Psalm 73 the author comes close to the sanctuary of God, symbolic of inti-

I take courage in the fact that as the psalmist drew near to God, he saw that life only has real meaning when we rest in that place of intimacy. He saw that nearness to God was good and that in God he found his refuge.

anked among the top 30 pianists in the world by the 2009 Cliburn Competition, Ang Li, who has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts among others, is coming to Abbotsford for one performance this Friday.

Li, 28, began playing piano by ear at the age of one, and when she was six, she made her first public appearance at Beijing Concert Hall. At 13, she made her orchestral debut with the Little Orchestra Society of New York and has been in demand on the world stage every since. “…the young Canadian pianist, Ang Li gave her Carnegie Hall recital debut . . . after her final piece, Ms. Li was greeted with several well deserved curtain calls and performed two encores . . . whose striking inside-the-piano effects inspired a fresh outburst of “bravos” from the clearly satisfied audience,” wrote Donna Fish of the Huffington Post The Valley Concert Society is delighted to present this outstanding Canadian artist, who will be performing a program with two themes, the first a marvellous romantic repertoire of Schubert, Brahms, and Chopin. The second half will feature 20th-century composers, several of whom have a local connection.

ears of laughter will be on the menu Saturday as the Bradner Comedy Night comes to Abbotsford’s Bradner Hall. A fabulous group of comedians including Kelly Dixon, Erica Sigurdson, Graham Clark and Charlie Demers will tickle your funnybone for this one night show and dinner event.

Proceeds from the night go towards Bradner’s Halloween Fireworks event in October.

MCing the show is comedian Kelly Dixon.

Born in Vancouver and raised in a tough working-class neighbourhood, the wiry Dixon’s natural quick wit and feet, got him out of many a hostile situation. His imaginative storytelling abilities and laid-back personality developed early.

His instant rapport with audiences earned him regular work as a stand-up comedian.

After a standout performance at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, Kelly moved to New York and became a regular at The Comic Strip and Stand up New York.

There, with a few other like-minded dogooders, Dixon was a writer and performer with the critically acclaimed and short lived sketch group The Milk Duds, all the while

studying at the very prestigious Sheila Gray Acting Studio.

Based in Vancouver, Erica Sigurdson is a dominating force in the Canadian Comedy scene, as well as an award-winning writer.

Her comedy festival credits include Montreal Just For Laughs, Winnipeg, Halifax, St. John’s, Moncton, P.E.I., Sudbury and Vancouver comedy festivals.

Sigurdson has recorded her own Comedy Now! special for CTV, as well visiting Kandahar in 2006 to record a television special for CBC called Stand-Up in Kandahar, which aired in the spring of 2007.

As a writer she has written for a CTV television variety-show pilot, a CBC situational comedy pilot and most notably co-wrote The

Graham Clark, from Vancouver, is a threetime Canadian Comedy Award nominee and co-host of Maximum Fun’s Stop Podcasting Yourself. Clark is regular on CBC’s The Debaters and has appeared at Just for Laughs, Halifax Comedy Festival, Winnipeg Comedy Festival and Bumbershoot.

dian Laugh Off and has appeared on HBO’s Funny As Hell.

Clark has filmed his own hour-long Comedy Now special for CTV and is also the creator of beardpaintings.com, where he sells paintings made using his beard as a paintbrush and donates the proceeds to charity.

Charlie Demers is a Vancouver comedian, humourist and author, heralded by CBC Radio as “Truly one of the smartest comics out there.”

In addition to performing in clubs and festivals across the country, and as a regular guest on CBC’s The Debaters and This is That, he is the author of the books The Prescription Errors and Vancouver Special, the latter of which was shortlisted for the Hubert Evans BC Bookprize for non-fiction.

Demers is a former co-host of The Citynews List, a nightly comedy television newspanel show, and has written and performed comedy for TV, stage, radio and the web.

Jenni Williams, the leader of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), has lost count of how many times she has been arrested—“maybe 37 or 38,” she says.

Jenni and her colleague, Magodonga Mahlangu, are only two of the many women who have been arrested, illtreated, intimidated and harassed for their peaceful human rights work in this southern African country.

Members often give out paper roses during their peaceful marches to symbolize their slogan of love and peace.

At a previous Valentine’s Day event in Bulawayo, banners proclaimed “The Power of Love can conquer the Love of Power” and women handed out roses to the public. Three of the 53 women arrested had simply been watching. At trial, the prosecutor decided against legal action, and the activists walked free after paying fines.

WOZA was formed in 2003 to defend human rights amidst the political violence in Zimbabwe, and continues their work today by mobilizing to improve living conditions in the country.

WOZA members will continue by peaceful means to use their freedom to meet together and criticize government policy. he noise level in the AESC rose to the rafters Tuesday as 6,172 screaming kids cheered on the Abbotsford Heat at the second annual School Day Game.

And the young fans, mostly middle school students, did not leave disappointed, as the Heat roasted the Rochester Americans 3-2 in the afternoon match.

“They were full of energy and full of excitement,” said Dave Stephen, communications manager with School District 34. “Staff acknowledged it was a much louder and more energy-filled game than it normally would be.”

Contributing to that were the bright orange

thundersticks, and every kid had them. They clapped them, beat each other up with them, and raised them high when the Heat scored.

Eight middle schools and seven elementary schools (with grades 7 and 8) participated, and the kids loved watching the big screen scoreboard, as video of Heat mascot Hawkey visiting each school came on to a thunderous cheer.

“Anytime middle school kids get to go to a big community event they’re excited,” added Stephen.

Not to miss out on a day of learning, all students were given a 25-page workbook, with trivia, games, and facts, and some of the answers were posted on the big screen.

“It’s a ton of work for the Heat (who weeks before had sent a production crew out with Hawkey to

video him at all the participating schools) and for us (the school district),” said Stephen. “I think it was worth it by the energy I saw today, and the smiles on the faces.”

And yes, there was also a hockey game with Brett Carson and Ben Street each recording a goal and an assist. Joe Piskul scored with an assist by Ben Walter in the second period for a 3-1 lead, and the Heat held on for the 3-2 victory and their leagueleading 16th home win of the season.

Danny Taylor earned his team-leading 13th win of the season –and on Wednesday signed a one year, two-way contract with the Calgary Flames following an injury to Miikka Kiprusoff.

This weekend the Heat host the Lake Erie Monsters (Colorado Avalanche affiliate) in a two-game set Saturday night (7 p.m.) and Sunday at 4 p.m.

he University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat 85-80 in overtime Friday night in Kelowna. On Saturday, the Heat returned the favour, beating the Cascades 68-58.

“UBC-O played really well tonight and deserved the victory. We have got to put this one behind us and get back at it next weekend,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen.

The Cascades Canada West regular season record stands at 10-8 in the Pacific Division, good for third place. UFV remains one game ahead of the TWU Spartans, at 9-9, for third place in the division.

The women’s basketball team withstood a tremendous first half by the UBC Okanagan Heat on Saturday to win their 15th Canada West regular season game of the season, 69-62, in Kelowna.

Kayli Sartori led UFV in scoring with a 20 point performance.

The night before, the Cascades defeated UBC-O 73-58 for a much-needed weekend sweep late in the season.

The Cascades, ranked fourth in the CIS Top 10 poll, improve their Pacific Division leading record to 15-3 and are now tied with the Regina Cougars and Calgary Dinos for the best record overall in Canada West.

Both hoops teams entertain the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack this weekend at the Envision Athletic Centre.
