Welcome. . June

Summer has finally arrived and it’s time for more BBQs, exploring more of the South West and swimming in warm(ish) waters. It’s also time for the June edition of Plympton. Inside this issue we have one business profile, lots of interesting editorials as well as some delicious picnic recipe ideas. We caught up with the team at Print Copy Scan, 6 years later, to find out more about the photocopier company and the changes they have made to the company since. We also met Jill, Supplier Manager of PCS Supplies, who tells us all about the local office supplies company. June 5th is National Cancer Survivors Day, a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community. This editorial is sponsored by our brilliant local and national cancer charities. Father’s Day is fast approaching so it’s time to think of what to get the father figure in your life. We have found some of the best Father’s Day gift ideas that are all local to Plymouth. We hope you have a lovely month!

Efficiently supplying the South West with quality photocopiers and office supplies, along with excellent customer service, is a top priority for Print Copy Scan. Not only are their customer relationships important, they also value their team by ensuring they have a healthy life-work balance. We spoke with Claire Smith, Commercial Director; Steve Redgrave, Accounts Manager and Jill Anderson, Supplies Manager to find out more about the company and why they love to work at Print Copy Scan.

W

e had the pleasure once again to visit Plymouth’s only family-run, independent photocopier specialists. On our last visit to the well-presented and well-located Print Copy Scan head office, we watched as wild deer wandered past the main office window, this was in December 2016 so as you can imagine it was a very memorable interview for us. A lot has changed since then, in fact, Print Copy Scan has managed to shape the business to become one of the most recognised brands for its sector in Devon & Cornwall. It’s good to hear the office staff still witness the beautiful herd of deer walking past their window on occasion in the mornings. Print Copy Scan (PCS) was established 15 years ago by local entrepreneur Karl Welburn. Karl’s mission, to provide the South West with fast, highquality photocopiers, printers, and repairs along with exceptional customer service. Karl has maintained that brilliant reputation throughout the years, even during the Covid-19 Pandemic with a new expansion into the office supplies sector, which gave birth to PCS Supplies.

By being an engineer focused team, they can act quickly and efficiently with an average site arrival time of 3 hours, along with a 90% first-time fix rate which is incredibly high in the industry. The astute PCS team only want the very best for their customers which means they have streamlined their products to the highest quality brands such as Toshiba, Develop, Epson and more. Talking to some of the team members it was very clear to us that PCS as a brand always strive to combine excellent value for money with excellent quality of service, where the customer comes first, every time, no matter the value of the product or service contract. A core value of this business is sustainability which is something Claire Smith, the new PCS Commercial Director and Karl are very passionate about. PCS are a carbon neutral business, so eco-conscious manufacturers are a key focus of the company. They source Ink and toner cartridges from carbon-neutral manufacturers or from recycled plastic where possible and can be easily recycled, and PCS will make sure to only order what is needed to prevent waste. PCS Supplies was founded in 2017 after Karl sourced to employ Jill to come and join the PCS team as Karl had recognised many of his PCS clients were enquiring if the business could provide office supplies. Karl had worked with Jill on multiple occasions previous to this and realised that a collaboration with Jill and her 20 years of experience to create a new office supplies platform was the way forward, so this is exactly what they did. Claire added in the interview, “Jill is so lovely, she is our walking, talking marketing and will look after you very well.’ And after meeting Jill many times ourselves we completely concur with that statement. PCS Supplies offer home & office printers, office stationery & paper, ink & toners, packaging &

“We now offer in excess of 1000 contracted photocopiers to businesses in the UK and which is fully backed up with complete print management services and repair services by our fully-qualified engineers.” – Steve informed us. With over 2000 customers to keep them busy “We can always be busier” Jill remarks.

storage, office furniture and much more. You can find all of the office supplies available on their website www.pcssupplies.co.uk. PCS pride themselves on being the only local, familyrun, independent, photocopier supplier in the South West. With an office in Plymouth, Devon and an office in Roche, Cornwall, they can reach the whole of the South West quicker than larger national companies. The added benefit of being an independent, family-run company means you will always get through to one of the team who will go out of their way to ensure they are offering the best customer service possible. It’s that quality of service and the local appeal of the company that has helped sustain the loyalty of their customers. The Covid-19 pandemic was an uncertain time for most. However, the team at PCS noticed that their clients from local schools, key workplaces and the NHS all needed printer supplies and repairs. Karl understood that there was a growing need to get much-needed products out to the key services such as the NHS along with servicing and repair needs. So, PCS continued to run and support their everyday requirements, this ensured key industries could still operate efficiently. This, along with the new flush of home workers needing equipment and support, kept the team very busy! Having grown up in Plymouth, Karl has a wide network of friends and clients who he respects and in turn, respect him and his company. PCS’s quality of service reflects this as they wish to continue and maintain good relationships with all their clients. One thing we noted, was although all businesses need to make a profit in order to continue, PCS’s focus as always, is on client satisfaction, and quality of service above everything else. Not only do the team at PCS want to maintain good relationships with their clients but also with the manufacturers. They are one of Toshiba’s key partners in the UK. The Print Copy Scan team continue to commit to community support programmes, helping the likes of St Luke’s Hospice, sponsoring Tour De Moor, The Round Table, Devon Ukraine Fund and HD Livin’ to name just a few. Karl is a kind-hearted individual who wants the

The PCS team as caricatures best for everyone around him, including his colleagues who he ensures have a healthy life-work balance. Karl’s principle is ‘Family comes first’ and knows that if you aren’t happy then that will affect your work. Claire has recently joined the team after knowing Karl and the team for many years. She is excited for the growth and change in the business as they expand and move to the next level. Along with their strong customer-focused values, Claire is driving eco-friendly print solutions forward. Claire is responsible for the welfare of her colleagues and ensures they are all healthy, and happy with a good life-work balance. “You have slotted in really well; you are a real bonus to the company.” Jill speaking to Claire. The future of PCS and PCS Supplies is exciting as they have the team in place to be able to carry it to the next level. They’d like to have encompassed the whole of the South West and beyond and have Print Copy Scan be the first name you think of when looking for photocopiers, printers, scanners and supplies. Due to the fantastic life-work balance that Karl and now Claire have ensured stays in place, they’d like for their company to be the desired company to work for. Jill would like to see PCS Supplies continue to grow and take more of a presence in the South West. Along with this growth, the team will expand and ensure all work well as a team. The fundamentals of Print Copy Scan are clear. A healthy life balance, strong customer and client relationships and local, independent service. Throughout the growth of the past 6 years, they have maintained this reputation and feel confident to move it towards the next stage of its amazing journey.

NATIONAL CANCER SURVIVORS DAY 5th June 2022 is the 35th annual celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day therefore, we have gathered together some of the best local and national cancer-based charities that help support patients battling cancer. We also recognise the physical and mental aftereffects of cancer treatments in this article.

N

ational Cancer Survivors Day is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families, and an outreach to the community. Wherever you are on your journey to fighting cancer, this day is for you and your loved ones. Statistics show that more people are surviving cancer than ever before which is very positive however, it’s just as important that we understand the challenges beyond treatment. Everybody’s experience with cancer is different, however, a cancer survivor’s fear of recurrence is the same for every individual. People often experience ongoing side effects after their treatment, even if the treatment was a success. These side-effects can be physical for example; scars, pain, numbness, fatigue, and headaches to name a few. There can also be mental challenges like increased anxiety, relationship problems, insecurity issues from scars or hair loss, depression and in some cases, survivors’ guilt. Although the cancer survivor may have had the ‘all-clear’, their ongoing battle with the after-effects of cancer can last for years and it’s important not to neglect these symptoms.

National Cancer Survivors Day is also a day of inspiration and hope for people battling cancer. Local and National charities such as Macmillan, The Primrose Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Bowel Cancer West and The Chestnut Appeal have sponsored this article, all offering quality cancer support and advice when you need it most.

Macmil an

Speaking on Cancer Survivor’s Day, Miranda Benney, Macmillan Information Centre Manager, The Mustard Tree, Plymouth, shared, “Cancer can be an isolating illness, but it doesn’t need to be. The team at The Mustard Tree is here to support you and your loved ones - from our volunteers to support specialists who are here to listen to your concerns.” “The Mustard Tree provides a place for people affected by cancer to come for information and support. It is open for pre-booked appointments with Counsellors, Complementary Therapists, Support Worker, and Benefits advisor, so anyone who is affected by cancer (including family members and carers) are welcome to call and arrange an appointment to have a confidential chat with one of our team members.”

Listen to the survivor, not everybody wants to talk about their cancer experience but it’s only natural that you want to help your loved one and understand what they have gone through. Don’t compare their story with another cancer story, just listen to what they want to talk about and let them lead.

Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. Our work is essential to make sure there is early detection for those unfortunate enough to be diagnosed, and your support will help us achieve our goals. We would love you to get involved with what we do, so please get in touch.”

The Primrose Foundation

The Primrose Foundation is your only local breast care charity that supports the care of local people suffering from breast diseases, including cancer. Based at the Primrose Breast Care Centre at University Hospitals Plymouth, our catchment includes Plymouth, West Devon, and East Cornwall. The Foundation grew from an original appeal that was set up to shape the future of breast care services. The objective was to fund a ‘One Stop Clinic’ where a day assessment is carried out to find out if further investigations are needed. The appeal was a huge success and the Primrose Breast care centre opened in 2001. Local support has continued to enable us to fund further essential equipment, research, and education and carers) are welcome to call and arrange an appointment to have a confidential chat with one of our team members.” Di Charlton, Engagement Lead, added, “At Macmillan, we know people affected by cancer are best placed to support others by sharing their experiences and in turn receiving support themselves. We offer small local support grants for projects to assist individuals or groups in setting up support groups or initiatives. If you would like to find out more, please get in touch via the SW engagement inbox: EngagementSouthWest@ macmillan.org.uk.”

Bowel Cancer West

“Bowel Cancer West (BCW) is a charity working tirelessly to ensure the survival rates of people in the South West of England diagnosed with the condition are the highest in the country. Whether you become a part of our dedicated team or support us financially, you can make a difference, helping us to uphold our commitment to raise awareness of the symptoms, undertake dedicated research, and facilitate long-term training.

for over 26 years. We work with the whole of the Breast care team at University Hospitals Plymouth and our dedicated volunteers to make our patient’s experience as comfortable as possible.

could be wrong, and a lot of our time is spent out in the community giving free talks and seminars about these three cancers. We also run a local support group.”

Our aim has always simply been to provide the best possible range of care and support when it is needed most.

Cancer Research UK is the worlds leading independent cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, influence and information.

The Chestnut Appeal

“The Chestnut Appeal was founded in 1999 at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth and has since gone on to be at the forefront of prostate cancer care right across the region. We support the very latest in treatments and technology that wouldn’t be available without community fundraising and we rely on donations from the public. Over the years we’ve realised that Men’s Health suffers from an imbalance and at the core of our work is highlighting this most common cancer in men, as well as Prostate Cancer, we also raise awareness of Testicular Cancer and Penile Cancer, two other quite treatable cancers that sadly if left can be devastating. We believe it is vital to get more men talking about their health and taking action when they feel like something

Cancer Research UK

In 2021, Cancer Research celebrated 20 years of Cancer Research UK, a huge milestone. Cancer Research UK is dedicated to supporting the research to beat all types of cancer. For every £1 you donate, 80p is used to beat cancer, the remaining 20p goes towards raising funds for the future. The majority of the funds go towards groundbreaking research and thanks to the research, cancer survival is improving and has doubled over the past 40 years in the UK. Although cancer is something that we would like to put to the back of our minds, it’s also something that will affect at least one person who we love. It’s nice to know that we have these brilliant local and national organisations and charities helping to raise funds, awareness and develop the science towards fighting cancer for good.

Honey flapjacks

• 225g butter, plus extra for the tin • 75g caster sugar • 4 tbsp honey • 350g porridge oats ONE Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Butter and line a 30 x 15cm rectangle tin with baking parchment. Melt the butter, sugar and honey in a pan over a medium heat, stirring frequently until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. TWO Put the oats in a mixing bowl, then pour over the butter and honey mixture. Stir until all the oats are coated. Tip into the prepared tin, and use a spatula or the back of a spoon to evenly spread out the mixture. Cook for 10-15 mins until lightly golden. Leave to cool in the tin, then remove before cutting into squares.

TWO Beat 5 large eggs, a 284ml carton of single cream and 150ml milk together with a fork then add 140g finely grated gruyère cheese, a generous grating of nutmeg and plenty of seasoning. THREE Stir in half the bacon and carefully pour the mixture into the deep 24cm blind-baked pastry case then scatter over the remaining bacon. FOUR Bake for 35-40 minutes until the filling is set, starting to turn golden and slightly puffed up above the pastry case. Allow to cool a little before removing from the tin.

BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY Calling all dog lovers far and wide, it’s the day you’ve all been waiting for… Bring your dog to work day! Take your four-legged friend along with you to work on Friday 24th of June. (If your company allows it of course.)

T

he love and affection we share with dogs have made them key parts of our families; and since they’ve been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness; the benefits of sharing our lives with dogs have a very real impact on our lives. Witnessing the sad look on your dog’s face as you leave for work is heartbreaking, therefore, in 1999, Pet Sitters International made it an official day dedicated to bringing your dog to work with you! The day was created to encourage businesses to allow dogs in the workplace for one Friday each year to celebrate our cherished companions and promote more adoptions. Here in the UK, an ethical pet product company called Hownd founded ‘Bring Your Dog to Work Day’ in 2014 as an annual nationwide event that raises money for many dog welfare charities. The evergrowing impact of social media has led to the event becoming a viral hit with thousands of businesses and dog owners taking part every year!

The two charities they support are ‘All Dogs Matter’ and ‘Animals Asia’. ‘All Dogs Matter’ is a London based rescue and rehoming charity doing their best to help more than 400 dogs every year. ‘Animals Asia’ is an international charity devoted to preventing the practice of bear bile farming and improving the welfare of dogs and cats in China and Vietnam. For such a fun day and to support many good causes it seems like a no-brainer to want to participate but before you rock up on the day with your dog there are some things that we advise checking first. The most obvious would be finding out if your workplace allows dogs at all, it’s worth referring to your company’s policy. It may say that pets are allowed as the company is petfriendly, in which case, you’re ready for the next step. Once you have confirmed that dogs are allowed in the workplace, you can then approach your boss to pitch the day to them. With the high percentage of dog owners in the UK, there’s a good chance that your boss may be quite happy to allow the day to go ahead. It’s important to remember that not all dogs get along with each other, therefore, if your dog is particularly nervous around other dogs, it may be best to leave them at home to avoid conflict. The team at OM celebrate ‘Bring Your Dog to Work Day’ every day. Myles, the Managing Director brings Bella to work with him each day. Bella loves to greet our visitors and make sure the staff are well looked after. She is always available for her belly to be rubbed and a ball to be thrown.
