Welcome. . August

Schools have well and truly broken up for the holidays and the BBQs are in full swing! On top of this, we have a brand-new edition of Plympton! We have one business profile, some delicious cocktail recipes and a few insightful editorials in this August edition. We hear from Chris Reilly, business owner of Signs Express Plymouth to find out more about the business and what changes will happen after he retires this September. We also spoke to the team to learn more about the government Kickstart Scheme that has been giving young people the opportunity to work in companies such as Signs Express. Plymouth Gin created three fresh, summery cocktails for you to try at home. They were made in the Refectory Bar in the distillery and can be ordered at the bar too! Thinking of spending a weekend somewhere idyllic with a glass of champagne? I’ve got you covered. I have found my favourite local romantic retreats because you don’t need to travel hundreds of miles to be able to call it a holiday.

Amy

We hope you have a wonderful August.

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS Gardening tips and landscaping trends.

W

e always mention how gardens are an integral part of the home if you’re lucky enough to own one, therefore, it’s important not to neglect it or simply ‘put up’ with it. We have gathered together some useful tips for planting, sowing and landscaping your garden for the winter into spring. Prune and deadhead any dead flowers and plants. Cut back roses that have finished flowering for the year to make room for new growth in spring and to keep it looking tidy. Pay attention to hanging baskets – deadheading, watering and feeding helps them through autumn.

What to sow in August?

As the summer begins to fall away from us, we are left wondering if we can plant anything else but the answer is yes, you can! August is actually the best time of year to prepare your garden for the next

blossom. I always think the common garden looks a little sad in the winter months which is completely normal however, there are some great plants to sow that will look fantastic all year round. Winter flowering pansies add a lovely dash of colour to your garden in the colder months and can be sown now. You can also plant violas and primroses now or in early spring depending on if you want them to flower in winter or summer. You want to be looking at planting ‘hardy’ plants and flowers during August and September so that they last over Winter to give you gorgeous flowers in spring. Pot marigolds are a hardy flower than can be sown now, ready for spring. Some other great plants to sow now are Calendula, Nigella, Cerinthe, Papaver, Aquilegia and hardy geraniums. You can also plant some bulbs like daffodils, colchicum and madonna lilies. Man For All Seasons are your local gardening experts and will help to create a garden that you’ll want to spend time in. They will of course be around in spring if you fancy waiting for the perfect time to sow seeds and create a summer ready garden. Not only do they help you decide what to plant where, they are also experienced landscapers who aim to give you a garden that you can be proud of.

Garden Design

Due to the recent worries on climate change, the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis, it has made us think very differently on where our things come from. Some fruit and veg is often shipped thousands of miles to get to our plates and does more harm than good to our planet. Lots

more people are trying to find out what they can successfully grow from their own back garden which is shaping how our gardens are looking and what is trending. We are also becoming more considerate about nature and protecting wildlife therefore more patches of wildflowers and slightly overgrown patches are appearing. All animals play a role in our food chain but we are all aware that bees are up there with the most important. Planting lavender, sunflowers, foxglove etc will all help to attract more bees. Our gardens are naturally becoming more of a sanctuary for wildlife which is amazing to see, but that doesn’t mean we can’t create space for our own gardening pursuits. Working out what to prioritise, especially if you have a small garden, is tricky, but Man For All Seasons can help you decide what will bring you the most amount of versatility. Low maintenance gardens and artificial grass are becoming more popular due to the fact that you can get very realistic artificial grass that is pet friendly. Green Scheme Solutions Plymouth offers a complete artificial grass supply service with a range of shades and textures to choose from. Your garden should feel like an escape from the realworld and a space to relax and unwind, no matter the size. Balconies are being transformed into mini

oasis and water features and outdoor living are all trending. If you spend lots of time in your garden entertaining and socialising, a garden sofa might be a brilliant investment to make. If your budgets don’t quite stretch to large pieces of garden furniture, how about a hammock for extra comfort! Natural/ sustainable materials are ever-increasing in demand as we turn away from plastic. We are seeing far more quality-made garden furniture that is built to last by using steel and sustainably sourced wood instead of plastic.

Fences

Fences are often under appreciated in their value and often become neglected. Fencing wraps around your entire garden so it’s important to create a nice backdrop to allow your plants to stand out. ColourFence Plymouth has a huge range of metal garden fences that stand the test of time. The colours they offer are endless so that it will compliment your garden aesthetic.

We hope you enjoy the last few months of summer in your garden!

Signs are often overlooked and taken for granted but the truth of the matter is, that you would be completely lost without them. Signs not only tell you where you are and where you want to go, but they are also vital components for branding and advertising your business to the world. Due to the important role that signage plays in the modern world, it’s important to choose the very best company to construct the perfect signs for your desired purpose. Signs Express consistently produce high-quality signs with experienced staff and exceptional service across the UK which convinced Chris Reilly to trust the franchise and therefore open Signs Express Plymouth. After 25 years of dedication and passion, Chris has made the decision to retire, leaving the business in the very capable hands of Simon and the team.

T

he Royal Navy was the route Chris naturally took after leaving school at the sprightly age of 17. Within the Royal Navy, Chris worked as a Submariner which involved various engineering and mechanical pursuits. When in 1997, on reaching 40, he took his service retirement and thought about what he was going to do with his life. While not wanting to leave Plymouth, which is a great city and a fantastic place to live. Becoming his own boss was something he was certain of but changing his career path at this age left him a little bit lost. Investing in a franchise is often thought a more secure route for business owners and Signs Express soon became the ideal option for Chris. Well organised, reputable, professional with a slight link to the engineering side of his late career in the Royal Navy, it was all lining up perfectly for Chris. Moving into Wolseley Business Park and securing his first client, Vospers, the business grew significantly over the years which led him to hire more enthusiastic team members, all motivated to learn the craft. Simon is the longest working team member after Chris, of 15 years which naturally means that when Chris retires, Simon will take over his role and look after the business. Due to the positive working environment and friendly people, the average time a team member stays at Signs Express Plymouth is at least 10 years, this is double the UK average! Due to the changes in the team, everyone is moving up a job role which leaves room for a few new

starters to join the team. In June 2021, Signs Express entered into the ‘Kickstart Scheme’ – a new government-funded scheme to assist young people claiming Universal credit, aged 18-25, into employment.

Under this scheme, businesses are funded to take on a young person in a job role for a 6-month placement. During this time, the young person is trained and given the opportunity to showcase their skills and practicality within the work environment. After the 6-month period ends, there is a prospect for the young person to be offered a permanent position within the company. The most recent Signs Express Plymouth’s success story with Kickstart begins in June 2021 when they opened themselves up to taking on Georgia under the role of Sales and Marketing Administrative Assistant. Georgia grew in confidence and excelled at any task given to her, she also displayed outstanding communication skills as well as producing engaging content for their social media. 13 months later and Georgia is a valued member of the Signs Express Plymouth team. Their second success story came in January 2022, 7 months after taking on their first trainee Georgia. With the end of Chris’ full-time career in sight, they decided it was time to expand the team again, this time, they were on the lookout for a ‘Trainee Sign Maker’. In this role, Jake was able to display his knowledge and functionality of manufacturing various products using a range of materials and equipment. During Jake’s time as a trainee, he gelled with the other team members and proved his ability to carry out work to a high standard whilst displaying enjoyment of working to the pace of their ever-expanding clientele. As of August 2022, Jake will become an official member of

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

the team, therefore another great success as a result of the Kickstart Scheme. Unfortunately, the Kickstart Scheme is no longer available to young people however, Georgia found the ‘Movement to Work’ course exceptionally helpful in leading her in the direction of the Kickstart Scheme. With the arrival of the new team members, they currently have 8, including Chris’ wife Vida who helped in the early days of the business and covers the accounts. We also must not forget Steve and Sam being important and highly valued members of the team in production and installation. Steve and Sam are both highly skilled, with lots of experience within our industry. Chris likes to focus on their main products and do them to the best standard which requires a skilled team. The team and the training are where Chris has focused on which has proven to be successful due to their long-standing colleagues and client satisfaction. Among the most popular products requested by clients is vehicle graphics and wraps. Vehicle graphics are constantly visible to the public which means it’s the most efficient way to get your business noticed. Signs Express can not only apply printed logos and graphics onto vehicles, but they can also wrap them, if you fancy a change of colour. The ‘Colour Change’ wrap lasts for up to 10 years. This ‘Wrap’ adds as protective layer of vinyl material to the vehicle whilst protecting the paint underneath. There are many colours and finishes to choose from, for example Carbon Fibre, Chrome, Gloss, and Metallic Matt, only the highest quality materials are used here which means they have great product longevity and customer satisfaction. You may be asking, ‘Why don’t you just get it sprayed?’ On average, spraying may be more expensive than having your vehicle wrapped by Signs Express, but there is the advantage of being able to ‘Unwrap’ the vehicle at a later date to reveal pristine paintwork underneath. Chris has recently had his VW transporter half-wrapped in Metallic Matt Iridescent Blue which looks amazing.

Meet the team

Your first point of contact when calling or emailing Signs Express Plymouth is Georgia who then works closely alongside Ian, who undertakes a sales liaison / surveyor role. Ian will take the clients to the next step of the process and will often take the time to meet clients face-to-face. This is often highly appreciated and goes a long way to ensure the job is done correctly and efficiently. Communication is a big part of their success, they like to be realistic with the client, informing them every step of the way whilst ensuring they are happy with the final product. Efficiency begins with the initial call or email where they will produce a quote for your business within less than 24 hours. Once that’s completed, they will proceed to the next steps within a matter of days, working alongside the client at all times. With Chris’ leaving date set for the end of September 2022, he can rest assured knowing that the business that he put 25 years of hard work into will be in safe hands. He tells us that he will miss the wonderful team and customers that he had the honour of working with and alongside for many years. Chris also tells us, ‘Simon together with his wife Tracy will make a success of it I am certain’. With plans to naturally expand their business clientele, they will assess a further team expansion. However, they are currently ready to take on new work with their current strong and capable team. It won’t be goodbye for Chris as he will always be available should they need any help but it is clear to us that the team are confident in doing Chris proud and maintaining the success of Signs Express Plymouth.

ROMANTIC RETREATS Escape your mundane routine and head to one of these romantic destinations, all located in the beautiful South West of England.

T

he perfect summer retreat doesn’t have to be a million miles from home. With airports advising you to get to the airport 2.5+ hours early, this takes up a large chunk of your precious holiday time and that’s not taking into account the duration of the flight itself and the airport transfer on the other side. To make things easy and to make the most of your time off work, we recommend a local staycation in the charming South West. Devon, Cornwall and Dorset have some of the most beautiful landscapes that you don’t need to travel very far to witness. You will still feel just as relaxed and refreshed from your break, even more so without the stress of the airport. We have gathered together our favourite local staycations to make your holiday search that little bit easier.

Turtley Corn Mill Near South Brent, Devon Sink into one of their grey velvet arm chairs, binoculars in hand, and spot some of the local wildlife from the comfort of your oak framed lakeside lodge. Turtley’s Lakeside Lodges are located on the grounds of Turtley Corn Mill, a traditional pub in the South Hams serving fresh food, local beers and a great wine list. The separate lodges are a new addition to the six luxury bedrooms situated within the main building, all named after the ducks that you will find on their lake.

18

The independent lodges popped up in 2022 and offer bi-folding doors onto your own private balcony with picture-perfect views of the lake. The interior has been tastefully designed with elegance and comfort in mind, complete with a super-king-Vi-Spring bed adorned with Egyptian cotton bedding. In the morning, a continental breakfast can be brough to you at the Lodge without having to lift a finger.

www.turtleycornmill.com Geodesic Dome Helston, Cornwall Catch yourself pointing towards Orion’s Belt and the Big Dipper whilst being surrounded by a wild flower meadow in your very own beautifully decorated geodesic dome. The nature of the dome provides uninterrupted views of the night sky in one of the darkest stargazing spots in the UK. Use the telescope supplied to get a closer look at the surface of the moon from the comfort of your king-sized bed complete with Egyptian cotton sheets. If this isn’t enough, you can wine and dine around the fire pit followed by an indulgent evening in the wood fired bath for two. Cornwall’s spectacular coast line is only a short drive away with many quaint villages along the way to explore.

OFF WITH A BANG! 17th - 18th Aug Photography by Tom Coles

The annual British Firework Championships have been displaying their beautiful firework displays in Plymouth since 1997. We found out more about this year’s competition and where best to watch it.

T

his year, the British Firework Championships are being held on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th August in our very own Ocean City. The fireworks will be let off on the Mountbatten breakwater creating a safe stage for the large-scale pyrotechnics. The natural curvature of Plymouths coastline creates an amphitheatre of endless viewing platforms which enables everyone to have a decent view of the display. The annual event celebrates six professional display companies as they compete to win the crowd and the judges’ favour! Three teams will compete on both evenings with a performance and then the winner is announced at the end of the competition. Every sixth year, the champion-of-champions takes place, where the winners from the five previous years go head-tohead and battle it out to be crowned the champion-ofchampions!

The teams taking part are: Europla Displays – 17th Nemisis Pyrotechnics – 17th Phoenix Fireworks – 17th

The first display on each evening will take place at 9:30pm and each display will last exactly 10 minutes with a ten-minute gap between each show. Due to the competition’s popularity, it is now recognised as the premier annual display in the UK which has done wonders for the city by attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. The busy nature of the event may cause some disruption on the roads therefore, our best advice is to use Plymouth’s Park and Ride facilities to enter the city if you are coming to watch from further afield. As seen in previous years, the event does get fairly busy and although social distancing guidelines have been relaxed, it is still important to be careful when in large crowds. The Hoe is located in a prime viewing spot therefore all of the entertainment will pop up on the Hoe and the promenade. There will be a whole host of fun happening on the Hoe with a funfair, live music from Heart FM and some delicious food stalls! The prime viewing areas fill up rather quickly so if it’s a nice day, it’s worth holding onto a good location and getting there early. Although The Hoe and Madeira Road are the main viewing platforms, you can also get a brilliant view from the Queen Anne’s Battery, Mountbatten itself or Jennycliff.

RECIPE IDEAS We are so lucky to be situated on the South coast with an abundance of local fish and shellfish on offer. Try using some in a recipe this month.

Coconut Fish Curry

Serves - 4

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 1 onion, finely chopped • thumb-sized piece ginger, finely grated • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp shrimp paste • 1 small red chilli, shredded (deseeded if you don’t like it too hot) • 2 lemongrass stalks, split, then bruised with a rolling pin • 1 heaped tbsp medium curry powder • 1 heaped tbsp light muscovado sugar • small bunch coriander, stems finely chopped • 400g can coconut milk • 450g skinless hake fillets, cut into rectangles, roughly credit card size • 220g pack frozen raw whole prawns • 1 lime, halved • cooked rice, to serve ONE Heat the oil in a wide, lidded frying pan, then soften the onion for 5 mins. Increase the heat a little, stir in the ginger, garlic, shrimp paste, chilli and lemongrass, and cook for 2 mins. Add the curry powder and sugar, and keep stirring. When the sugar starts to melt and everything starts to clump together, add the coriander stems, coconut milk and 2 tbsp water, then bring to a simmer. TWO Add the fish to the sauce, tuck the prawns in here and there, then squeeze over half the lime. Pop on the lid and simmer for 5 mins more or until the hake is just cooked and flaking, and the prawns are pink through. Taste for seasoning, adding a squeeze more lime to the sauce if you like. Scatter over the coriander leaves and serve with rice.

Spaghetti with lemon, prawns and parmesan Serves - 4 • 400 grams dried spaghetti • 400 grams raw, peeled prawns • zest and juice 2 lemons • 4 tablespoons olive oil • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 long red chilli, seeded and finely chopped • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley • 2 spring onions, thinly sliced • sea salt and ground pepper ONE Put the lemon zest and juice, olive oil, Parmesan and garlic in a bowl and whisk together. It will look grainy. Add half the chopped chilli and half the parsley, a pinch of salt and a good grind of pepper. Set aside. TWO Cook the spaghetti in boiling salted water until al dente, adding the raw prawns for the last 2 minutes of cooking. Remove a ¼ cup of the cooking water then drain the spaghetti and prawns. THREE Divide the pasta and prawns between warm bowls and top with the remaining chilli, parsley and the spring onions. Pass extra Parmesan for grating if desired.

ago Gill had to have an operation which meant for a few weeks she could not care for Adrian. She spent a long time looking around places where Adrian could go for respite care for a couple of weeks. This proved a lot more difficult than expected and although there are some HD specialist places, they can be very expensive.

HD Livin’

Adrian ended up going into a care home, this was not successful, care homes Walk 2020, 130 miles in 5 days are not set up to give 1-2-1 care or to deal with the range of symptoms seen HD Livin’ is a charity set up with the aim with HD patients, so they ended up bringing Adrian out early and between Anthony and his sisters they to provide respite care for people with supported their Mum in caring for him. Huntington’s Disease (HD). Along with Hubs where anyone impacted by this terrible disease can meet up and support each other through the many challenges encountered when impacted by HD.

H

untington’s Disease (HD) is a progressive brain disorder caused by a defective gene. This disease causes changes in the central area of the brain, which affect movement, mood and thinking skills. The disease affects between one in 10,000 and one in 20,000 people in the UK. It affects men and women equally and there is currently no cure or way of slowing the Disease. Symptoms of Huntington’s Disease usually develop between ages 30 and 50, but they can appear as early as age 2 or as late as 80. The hallmark symptom of Huntington’s Disease is uncontrolled movement of the arms, legs, head, face and upper body. Huntington’s disease also causes a decline in thinking and reasoning skills, including memory, concentration, judgment, and ability to plan and organise. Huntington’s disease brain changes lead to alterations in mood, especially depression, anxiety, and uncharacteristic anger and irritability. Another common symptom is obsessive-compulsive behaviour, leading a person to repeat the same question or activity over and over. Founder of the charity Anthony Lomas’s family is one of many across the world that is impacted by the curse that is Huntington’s Disease (HD). Since he was young, he has seen the impact this horrendous illness has on not only the person with the disease but their family and friends. However, it was only in the last few years when he really appreciated the level of care someone suffering from HD needs. He watched his dad (Adrian) slowly deteriorate with the illness and the impact it had on his Mum (Gill) who became Adrian’s Full-time carer. A couple of years

Anthony Said “Unfortunately, not everyone is in a position that they have other family members around to support in times like this, or have a way of simply getting a break which is why I believe this Charity is so important to care for carers and give them the support they need with the peace of mind that their loved ones are being cared for appropriately, by people who really understand their needs. This along with the proposed Hubs built onto the respite centres gives the wider HD family a place to meet, talk and support each other through the many different challenges we must face and to find out what professional help and support is available by who.” If you would like to support HD Livin’ by making a donation, holding a fundraising event, or attending one of the future events below. Or if you are a business owner and would like to donate a raffle prize or a high-end value auction lot to be used for fundraising at future events please contact Tony at theteam@hdlivin. org.uk or call him on 07813028670 quoting reference OM22.
