HEADING NORTH

S TARJA MANNINEN, CHIEF EDITOR

ometimes, it is necessary to travel great distances to discover something new and exciting - something that lingers in your mind for years and helps you cope with the hustle and bustle of daily life. Lying in the northernmost region of Finland, some 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, is Inari-Saariselkä. Its remote geographical location at the top of the European Union is no barrier to travel as it is easily accessible by a 1.5-hour flight from Helsinki. Finnair flies to Ivalo round the year offering several departures daily in the busy winter season. Norwegian Air also offers three flights per week in winter. On your arrival, you are welcomed by a modern airport with an extensive range of services. Ivalo is an airport on the human scale where visitors are met as soon as they enter the terminal. Efficient shuttle services are available from the airport to Saariselkä, Kiilopää and Kakslauttanen. You can also arrange transfer to Inari but you need to book in advance. Many hotels and guest houses have their own airport shuttle service. You can admire the beautiful and sensitive Arctic nature throughout the whole Inari-Saariselkä region. The wide range of accommodation facilities, local food, exciting outdoor activities and the unique Sámi culture is a combination you will not find anywhere else. Even so, the peace and quiet of the wilderness is always just a few steps away. In this northernmost region of Finland, winter lasts seven months. With guaranteed snowfall every year, it

is a charming wonderland where people know how to enjoy the winter. The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) can be seen dancing in the night sky from the end of August to the end of March. Ski tracks and pistes open in November with the season lasting until early May. Aside from cross-country and downhill skiing, the main winter attractions include the Aurora Borealis, dog sled and snowmobile safaris, and snowshoe treks. Summer is the period of ‘nightless days’ lasting from late May to late July. Even on the hottest days, the air remains fresh and pure. Two of Finland’s largest natural parks are located in the region - the Lemmenjoki and Urho Kekkonen National Parks - and with their well-marked trails and extensive network of huts and cabins to rest or spend the night free of charge they are a paradise for the outdoor adventurer. The river boats on Lemmenjoki offer the opportunity to explore the history of gold panning in Lapland. Lake Inari, the cleanest of Finland’s great lakes, offers excellent fishing and scenic cruises. In summer, highway E75 running through the Inari-Saariselkä region is Finland’s most popular route to the Arctic Sea. A trip to Inari-Saariselkä is more than just a trip to a holiday resort – it promises a safe yet exciting adventure packed with new and amazing experiences!

minutes is a reasonable duration for a flight, given that there’s over 1000 kilometres to cross north from Helsinki. Up in Ivalo, a cosy airport welcomes all the guests, and from there it is easy to travel on to destinations in Saariselkä or ever further north. From the airport in Inari, you can rent a car and travel independently in the northern area of Finland and the EU, as well as the most northern Norway. At the airport, travellers can find the most common car rental shops, such as Sixt. There is plenty to see in the Inari-Saariselkä region during summer and winter. To start your journey, you should first visit the legendary Saariselkä, with its Urho Kekkonen national park, the stunning fell landscape and hiking trails, as well as numerous hotels, activities and services. By following the E75 Lapland route, you’ll reach Ivalo, the centre of administration and business. Moving on, you will reach the second largest population centre in the municipality and the centre of Sami culture: the village of Inari at the shore of the vast and gorgeous Inarijärvi Lake. The road goes on from Inari to Utsjoki, which is the northern-most municipality in Finland, and the only municipality where the Sami people are a majority. On Finland’s side, the road ends at Nuorgam, the northern-most village in Finland located at the grand shore of Tenojoki right at the border of Norway. Once in Norway, you can drive to small coastal villages such as Alta, Hammerfest, Honningsvåg and famous Nord Cape and many others within a day’s journey. On Finland’s side, there are four border checkpoints, whence you can choose the shortest route to your destination. The checkpoints are Karigasniemi, Näätämö, Utsjoki and Nuorgam. During summer, the midnight sun shines throughout the night and the rugged beauty of the wilderness charms all travellers. During winter, travellers can take a moment to admire the blazing Northern Lights and the Arctic beauty of the wintry nature. Get ideas for your trip from www.inarisaariselka.fi Bus connections to and from the Ivalo airport will take you to Saariselkä, Ivalo and Inari

For years, a bus connection has been running after every scheduled flight from the Ivalo airport southwards to Saariselkä, Kiilopää and Kakslauttanen. Naturally, the buses go the other way around as well, so there is a bus connection from south to every outgoing flight. Transportation is managed by Eskelisen Lapin Linjat Oy, and their monthly schedule and prices can be found on their website at www.eskelisen.fi/en/ A year ago, the airport could also be reached from Inari and Ivalo by bus. Now transportation is managed by the local transport service provider Kuljetusliike Ilmari Slant. Seats must be booked by 6 pm on the previous evening. The road is crossed by a minibus, and during the busiest season there are often two minibuses on the road. Transportation can be booked by sending email to ilmari.slant@pp.inet.fi or by doing a reservation online at www.kuljetusliikeilmarislant.fi. There you can also find schedules and prices. On these sites, you can also enquire about transportation beyond Inari, as well as taxi transportation. There is more information about the airport taxi transportation at the service index of this magazine and the website www.inarisaariselka.fi/en/activity/taxis-en/

ith the expansion of the social media, more are more people across the world are becoming interested in the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). A huge number of images of the Northern Lights, for example, can be found at #northernlights, #auroraborealis as well as on Instagram and Facebook. A selfie with the lights in the background is a sure way of getting ‘likes’. But where is the best place to see the Northern Lights, not to say anything about capturing them on camera?

north of the Arctic Circle are wrapped in dark polar nights as the sun refuses to rise above the horizon. There are, however, two periods during the year when the earth’s position relative to the sun is favourable in terms of its magnetic field – from October to late November and February to March. The Northern Lights may also be visible in the Inari-Saariselkä region from August to late March, even in April, some 200 times per year. The chances of seeing the Northern Lights are also thus fairly good throughout the autumn and winter seasons. Learn about the Northern Lights on excursions

Head for the northernmost region of the European Union

Photographing the Northern Lights is not that simple. For one thing, only one out of twenty people in the word live in areas where the Northern Lights can be witnessed regularly. While they may be visible fairly far south in a good year, the chances of actually seeing them increases the further north you travel. Located some 200 km north of the Polar Circle, Inari-Saariselkä is the northernmost region of Finland and the European Union. At the very top of the country lies the village of Nuorgam, some 500 km north of the Arctic Circle. While it appears to be far removed from any services, it offers excellent accommodation facilities, delicious food and a company specialising in the Northern Lights. One quarter of the world’s inhabitants has never seen a clear starlit sky because the bright city lights make it impossible to observe the stars or even the moon! If you want to see the Northern Lights and a starlit sky, therefore, it is necessary to head north. Gazing up at the seemingly countless number of stars is both a powerful and memorable experience. What is the best time to see the Northern Lights? Many believe that that December– January is the ideal season – a time when the regions

So what is the best way to see the Northern Lights? The easiest way is to take part in a Northern Lights excursion organised across the Inari-Saariselkä region. You have plenty of transport options to choose from: a reindeer or husky sledge, snowmobiles, snowshoes, or a bus or rental car. If you want to get the best from photographing the Northern Lights, it is a good idea to participate in an excursion organised by a local photographer. They only set out on clear evenings when there is a real chance of seeing the lights. You can also have your photograph taken by the professional with the Northern Lights as the backdrop – a unique memento from your trip way up north! If you wish to see the Northern Lights on your own, it is advisable to select accommodation offering an unobstructed view of the sky with as little artificial lighting as possible. The area also boasts the world-famous glass igloos that allow you to wonder at the beauty of Northern Lights from the warmth and comfort of your bed. Ideal locations for watching the lights are lakes, fells and clearings shielded from artificial lighting. Roadside laybys can also be a prime spot to see the lights. There is also a short nature trail in Saariselkä, which is kept open throughout the winter. A safe and well-marked track takes you through the forest but be sure to take along a flashlight or headlamp to make it easier to find your way. A winter night in the northernmost region of Finnish Lapland is an awe-inspiring experience. To make it even more spectacular, we hope that you will be able to witness the dance of the Northern Lights in the night sky. It is an image that will stay with you for the rest of your life. This moving and delightful experience will make you want to come back time and time again.

Nature heals Imagine a completely new medicine. A drug to keep you more active and healthier, to relieve stress and lift your spirit. It decreases the risk to have cancer, cardiac illness or diabetes – while also produces clean water and fresh air. If this kind of wonder drug existed, it would definitely win the Nobel Prize.

T

oday there is more knowledge of the impacts on health, and the number of international and domestic test results on nature’s effect on health and well-being has increased nicely. They are examples of how roaming and exercising in the wilderness enhances physical and mental health. Nature’s activating influence can produce this kind or indirect health benefits. In 2013, The Finnish Metsähallitus (“Administration of Forests”) and the Oulu Deaconess Institute published the currently largest survey on the experiences of the national park’s visitors in regards to the influence they felt that roaming in nature had on their psychical, social and physical well-being. The survey included three national parks: from Southern and Eastern Finland, as well as the largest national park Kevo from the Inari-Saariselkä region in the northern-most Lapland. The park’s visitors provided 2052 replies, out of which the share of visitors in Kevo was significant. The research results strengthen many previous beliefs on the experienced benefits. The role of the Natural Heritage Services by Metsähallitus regarding healthiness and welfare is to primarily enhance people’s health and well-being, and encourage them to roam in to wilderness. At the same time, the

Natural Heritage Services are doing close cooperation with research centres and different operators. A trip to national park conquers stress

Last year, all the Finnish national parks were visited some 2.3 million times, and all the wilderness destinations maintained by Metsähallitus some 5.6 million times. In one trip to the national park, people hiked the average distance of 15 kilometres. Based on these numbers, people travel 34 million kilometres per year in all the Finnish national parks, which amounts to 850 laps around the globe! The survey shows that a trip to the national park lifts the spirits and relieves stress. A visit to a park adds tranquillity, peacefulness, happiness, vitality and the feeling of safety, as well as reduces melancholia. The same results repeat in other current studies on nature’s effects on the mental well-being. Health influences that enhance mental well-being also last the longest. Well-being for the entire family – nature is the best place to play

Adults find that roaming in the wilderness provides their children with stimulating and developing things to do. Children enjoy spending time together in nature,

INARI – SAARISELKÄ

and find joy in exercise. They gain positive experiences by being self-fulfilling and by learning new skills and things. In their parents’ evaluation, kids’ interest to nature increased during an excursion in a national park. Roaming in the wilderness has positive effects on their imagination, creativity and perception – children gain more confidence and courage, and do not fear the wild outdoors. Based on these results, it would also seem that adults feel more present in their child’s life outside rather than indoors. Public health worth of millions of euros

National parks and other wilderness destinations are a notable and an inexpensive way to help prevent health problems. Hikers valued the health impacts they gained in the national parks worth the average of 208 euros (median 100 euros). The values of how much beneficial impact a trip in the wilderness had on their health and well-being were strongly affected by the time spent on parks and the number of kilometres travelled. If the health benefits of one visit are valued at the median of 100 euros, the sum of health impacts on all visitors in Finnish national parks is annually around 230 million euros.

INARI – SAARISELKÄ

“NATIONAL PARKS AND OTHER WILDERNESS DESTINATIONS MAY BE A REMARKABLE AND INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO HELP PREVENT HEALTH ISSUES.”

Exercising in the wilderness is equal, efficient and mostly free health training for everyone. Exercising and spending time in nature is a noteworthy and inexpensive way to help prevent health problems. Energy from the Lappish wilderness

The camping area of Inari-Saariselkä is located far away in the north, near the Arctic Ocean. In there, nature is always near, and there are exceptionally good opportunities to make shorter day trips or longer journeys in the most amazing Finnish national parks. The most popular national parks are located right by traveling centres, and oftentimes within walking distance. Last year, 950 000 visits were made in the national parks of Lapland. National parks and services of the travel centres support each other and significantly advance the health and well-being of both local people and travellers. The benefits of the Nobel winning wonder drug we imagined earlier are right there in the national parks, as long as we get moving. Trips to the national park benefits everyone – regardless of age.

Lemmenjoki National Park 60 years Established in 1956 Expanded in 1971 and 1981 Area: 2 850 m2

One-day and multi-day hiking trails in Finland’s largest national park.

T

he stunningly beautiful Lemmenjoki river that runs through Finland’s largest national park leads you to the heart of traditional Sami territory and the gold-fields of Lapland. Even a day’s hike combined with river transport will give you a real taste of a genuine wilderness. You can also hike in the Lemmenjoki area outside the marked trails. Take a day trip on a riverboat, or a hike, and experience peace amidst pure wild nature

Are you planning a longer hiking trip, or do you only have a few hours to spare? A river valley surrounded by fells in Finland’s largest national park offers a wide range of hiking trails. The special thing about Lemmenjoki is that, while it may seem deep in the heart of the wilderness, it is easily accessible by a scheduled riverboat. You can combine hiking with a boat rip, or travel all the way by boat. You can hop off at Ravadasköngäs (Ravadas Falls) to witness one of the most fascinating points of interest along Lemmenjoki, or continue straight on to Kultasatama (Gold Harbour). The boat will take you back to Njurgulahti village in the evening, or you can alternatively hike back along the beautiful riverside. The gold-fields and the Lemmenjoki valley have clearly marked and signposted trails and you can rest and sleep in huts, some of which can be booked in advance. If you only have a short time to spend, make the most of it by hiking a few kilometres from Lemmenjoki village along the river or climb to the top of the 530 metre-high Joenkielinen, to take

12

in the breathtaking fell landscape. The more seasoned hiker will find no shortage of off-trail hiking routes. Sami culture, gold-digging and prehistoric finds

Besides the superb views, Lemmenjoki is also a place where you can encounter original Sami culture and try your hand at finding gold. Learn about the history of the gold-rush in Lapland and meet modern-day gold-diggers at the goldfields near Lemmenjoki valley. The huts and digs of legendary gold-diggers tell their own stories to the passing hiker, and on guided tours you can try your luck at gold-panning. The goldfields route is accessible from Kultasatama or Ravadasjärvi, and the tour can also be combined with a boat ride. The travel businesses at Lemmenjoki village are run by the local Sami, who will introduce you to their own Sami culture at Lemmenjoki. Kaapin Jouni Farm, at the northern end of Sotkajärvi near Lemmenjoki, is the homestead of a well-known Sami family dating back for more than a hundred years. It was acquired and added to the national park in the early 2000s. The buildings standing in the middle of a beautiful traditionally tended meadow and washed golden by the sun have welcomed many visitors during its history – ministers and governors, film makers and journalists from every corner of the globe. There are also signs of much older human presence in the area: hundreds of trapping pits have left an imprint on the terrain many thousand years ago by the inhabitants, whose main livelihood was deer hunting. There are more than one thousand pits in the entire national park, and once you identify one, you start seeing many other along the trail. Deer hunting has come to an end over time, and the old hunting grounds have become pastureland for the reindeer.

The blue midwinter twilight to the dazzling spring snow

Lemmenjoki offers an excellent setting for waterway adventures. The trip from Njurgulahti to Kultasatama and back can be covered in two days, but don’t rush – take as long as you like for this unique experience. The stream is gentle and therefore suitable for paddlers with little experience, and the riverside is dotted with several resting places to take a break. If you have a longer paddling trip in mind, you can set off at Muddusjärvi or Solojärvi lakes and make your way across Paadari lake to the Lemmenjoki river. The Lemmenjoki National Park is best known as a summer destination but it is a great place to experience Lapland throughout the year. In the winter, the tranquillity of the ancient pine forests and the snowcapped fells can be reached by skis or snow-shoeing. The soft, deep snow during the Arctic winter months and the dim blue twilight, or the gloriously bright April sun and skiing or walking on the hard-decked, easily negotiated crust of snow – both well worth the visit. In the wilderness, but close to services

In addition to riverboat transport, the local travel businesses offer a wide range of services in the national park and its vicinity, while strictly observing sustainable nature tourism. If you are apprehensive about going into the wild on your own, the many trip and event organisers at Lemmenjoki will be pleased to guide you through an unforgettable Lapland experience, safely and securely. You can choose from panning for gold and hiking trips to ski trekking and canoeing trips. After your journey, nothing beats a cosy night in a warm cabin and bathing in the gentle steam of a sauna. Alternatively, you can use a cabin as your base from where to take day trips into the surroundings. Njurgulahti and Menesjärvi villages have a good selection of accommodation, dining, and activity services available. Local businesses rent out boats and canoes to independent adventurers - providing packed meals and even organising courses in, for example, felting. For more ideas on how to plan your trip, visit

Call of the Northern Snow The bluish hues of the polar nights, the blaze of the Northern Lights, the snowy fell peaks for as far as the eye can carry – or the magic of the snowy winter forest, blizzards, rain of sleet and humid darkness... These are examples of the ambiance and landscapes that make the winter in the Urho Kekkonen National Park. You get to enjoy the wintry atmosphere right by the Saariselkä Ski Resort, or at the end of roadless journeys right in the heart of the national park. The latter requires a little more effort.

ark and frosty. The only sources of light are provided by street lamps, and the light shining through the windows of houses, shops and hotels. Through the window in an airplane, one can see the view of a vast wilderness, which encircles visitors all around. Then again, could it be that the darkness is merely a harmless kind or shade – different tones of blue in the polar nights – reflections of light from space on the snowy fields? All it takes to observe the natural light in the winter nature is to take a step outside the artificial light, and have the courage to adjust to the bluish shades of wilderness. The further you reach from the urban areas, the more you distinguish all the different shades of color on the snow, the sky and the forest. Even in winter, there’s life

The wintry nature offers new experiences in many different levels. The environment seems quiet and absorbed under the winter drowse. This is actually true in the case of some species. The wind whispers amidst the trees and plays with the snow on skiing tracks and street corners. Birds go quiet during the winter, but as soon as spring arrives and it’s lighter all around, you start hearing them sing. You may also notice animal

14

trails on the snow. During winter, nature gets to breathe and rest for the upcoming spring. After the long darkness, even a glimmer of light from the sun gives an indication of the might of light and spring. Although the dusk endures for almost half a year, from the early days of winter until spring that arrives unnoticed, it is definitely worth the experience. Many find observing the wintry nature troubling because of the season’s extreme conditions. In many cases, the weather does nothing to excite the guests into leaving the warmth of a house. The wintry nature can also be enjoyed in smaller doses. Once you get used to its quirks, you can make extended outings. Make a day trip or a longer stay to the warmth of the fell cottages

The Urho Kekkonen National Park is a special kind of national park. The national park has day cottages, wilderness refuges and reservable wilderness huts, which enable different kinds of expeditions and experiences. The well-maintained network of skiing tracks leads to the nearest destinations with minimal winter hiking skills. It is advisable to start with a light backpack and to map out the day’s destinations. There are trails for snow shoeing in the areas of Saariselkä, Kiilopää and

INARI – SAARISELKÄ

Tankavaara, and hundreds of kilometers of maintained skiing trails in Saariselkä. The more experienced hikers can find their own trails to the wilderness refuges and reservable wilderness huts deeper in the national park. With the help of the cottage network, you can plan a hiking trip for a few days or even several weeks. The more you explore the national park, the greater the unique experience of the wintry nature and wilderness. A diversity of lights reflect off the sky: and the northern lights, the moon and stars do themselves justice outside of the artificial light. In a winter hike, you can test your ability to withstand stillness, coldness, scarce services, lack of internet and perhaps even loneliness. You will experience an added exotic touch by using a toilet outside or fetching wood from the shed in the middle of the night. In exchange, you will get the feeling of success and a peaceful mind. You might also want to take a wintry hike in a group. Shared joy and experiences are something to look back later on together. Groups might be wiser to book a reservable wilderness hut beforehand, so that accommodation is ensured, and individual hikers get to utilize the wilderness refuges. Make a safe trip by knowing your way

Whether you are doing a short day’s trip or a longer hike, it is wise to start planning the journey thoroughly

early on, to get a map or to explore the area online. The widest coverage of the Urho Kekkonen National Park is at www.nationalparks.fi/urhokekkonen. The map services on the excursionmap.fi also advise where to find all hiking equipment. The most central places of departure for hikes in the national park are in Saariselkä and Kiilopää, which have the most convenient access to marked routes and maintained skiing trails. From Saariselkä, you can find equipment rental shops and stores, where you can find additional hiking gear. Transportation to other places of departure is also arranged via programme service companies and taxi entrepreneurs. In Saariselkä, the most extensive assistance services are found in the service point of Kiehinen in the Urho Kekkonen National Park. The customer service in Kiehinen will help you plan your trip, advice you on the equipment and tell you all the current information on the terrain.

INARI – SAARISELKÄ

I do.

INARI-SAARISELKÄ TOURISM LTD

In Inari, weddings can be celebrated below the Northern Lights or the Midnight Sun.

I

nari is a paradise for people who love the northern nature: all of its tundra, fells, barren pine forests, luxuriant birch groves, lakes, rivers and small streams. Many arrive in Inari in order to get married close to the wilderness: at top of a fell or by the roar of rapids, below the blazing Northern Lights or in the brightness of a Nightless Night. In Inari, there is also a variety of atmospheric churches where to say: “I do”. On the peak of a fell, even the sky comes a little closer. On the highest peaks of the open Saariselkä fells, you can admire the wide landscape over the national park and the far away fells. These peaks have been venues for numerous couples as they have gotten married, renewed their marriage vows, and as their long marriages have been blessed on their anniversary. In hotel Kakslauttanen, located in Saariselkä, weddings, honeymoons and vow renewals have been arranged for 17 years, and nearly five hundred mainly foreign couples have exchanged rings. Couples have also included people with different religions and beliefs. In Kakslauttanen, weddings can be arranged in a chapel built out of snow, as well as in Tievakappeli, an old log chapel located in pine stand, which can be reached by a sleigh pulled by a reindeer or a horse. Couples have also gotten married on Santa’s bridge and at an altar set up in the wilderness. You can even pan for gold for the wedding rings from streams. After the wedding, newly-weds can withdraw to an intimate wedding chamber or a glass igloo. For many travelers, Inarijärvi – “the shoreless sea of Sami”, is what is most beautiful in all of Inari. A cruise ship departing from the Inari municipality has actually served as a wedding venue and carried guests to weddings arranged at Ukonkivi, known as an old place of worship to the Sami people. In the idyllic wilderness church of Pielpajärvi, built in 1760, many couples get married during the summer, autumn and early spring. The small wooden church is located at the end of this roadless journey, ten kilometers away from the Inari municipality. When there is no ice or snow on the ground, the church can be reached by foot or partly by a cruise ship. During winter, the journey is crossed with snowmobiles. Inarijärvi, with its thousands of islands, wilderness, and fells circling the lake, can also be viewed from the

INARI – SAARISELKÄ

top of Sovintovaara, only approximately ten kilometers north of Ivalo. An Alpine kind of road leads to the top of the hill, and its peak has also been used as a wedding location. The river Lemmenjoki in the Lemmenjoki national park can be considered as a stream of love, and it certainly is a stunning and romantic wedding location. Some people want to get married at the shore of Ravadas falls, which flows to river Lemmenjoki, others in the fell peak of the gold area, or by a gold digger’s cabin.

T

here is less than an hour’s boat trip on the river Lemmenjoki to reach Ravadas falls, and the wedding venue has been reached by groups of different sizes: from a few people to even fifty guests. In Inari, weddings are also held in cottages, in a hut or a lean-to, and under the open sky by a fire. There are also many chapels and churches in Inari that are popular among wedding couples. The most popular one in Saariselkä is the Fell chapel, from where it is easy to relocate to a variety of restaurants for wedding celebration. The atmospheric old log chapel of Tievakappaeli is the first tourist church in Lapland, where visitors kneel before the altar on reindeer hides. The most popular of the traditional churches in the Inari municipality is the Sami church. There is also plenty of assistance available for the wedding arrangements in Inari, Saariselkä and Lemmenjoki. In addition, couples on their honeymoon are able to use the variety of services during summers and winters in Saariselkä and Inari.

Saariselkä is a great place to admire the vibrant colours of autumn foliage and the Northern Lights.

SAHAVIRTA AND PERTTI TURUNEN

T

he Northern Lights are Lapland’s greatest asset. Riitta Balza, marketing manager and representative of Visit Finland in the UK, also considers autumn foliage to be an attraction, since in Lapland, you get to admire all the autumn colours as well as the best view of the Northern Lights. Previously, Balza has only visited Inari and Saariselkä during winter, but in September, she experienced Inari for the first time during the brightly coloured autumn. In her opinion, autumn foliage has not been capitalized in tourism marketing: more visitors could be enticed to visit Lapland in autumn by making autumn foliage well known. That way, tourism would be active all year-round. - Saariselkä is a peaceful and a distinctive place, with a variety of things to do, says Balza. While the Alpine village in Levi might have more nightlife and downhill skiing, Saariselkä can offer custom-made services and an environment that still has a spirit of its own - it still is a Lappish centre, where you can reach everywhere by foot. Saariselkä and Inari are a part of

Lapland that is unmarked by mass tourism: Lappish and Finnish all at once. These days, things that are new and distinctive are on demand, and Saariselkä can certainly excel in these areas. - The Sami culture is definitely an asset in Saariselkä, and something that is not present in Levi, Balza remarks. The Sami museum Siida is close by, as well as Norway and Russia. Allure is added by the magnificent national parks in Inari: the UK-national park and Lemmenjoki. In Inari, there are variable options for accommodation: instead staying at a fell hotel or at the population centre, you could choose, for example, the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, the Hotel Korpikartano in Menesjärvi, or the Wilderness Hotel Nellim. - At the Northern Lights seminar in Korpikartano and the rustic hotel Nellim, everything is silent. The igloo landscape of Kakslauttanen is among the mostviewed photo themes in social media, and abroad it is the most recognised attraction in Saariselkä, Balza explains. Aside from shopping, fine dining is also a part of tourism. Balza especially names Saariselkä’s Laanilan Kievari, where you can enjoy good food and a special atmosphere by a fireplace and rocking chairs. When the landscape is as stunning as here, there is nothing to add to the Northern exoticism except coffee and sausages by a bonfire, Balza notes. Many foreig-

ners, such as the British, are afraid of the dense and dark forest, so the vast and easily accessible terrain is perfect for them - particularly when it is suitable for all ages. Those who look for more challenging routes will also find proper trails. As for honeymoons, the current trend involves the wellbeing of mind and body: people want to get out of the noise and dirt from bigger cities. Sauna, fresh air, peace and quiet of the wilderness, easy hiking and picking berries are examples of these kind of pleasures. Many find luxury in the fact that food is clean and trustworthy. The British have not yet been sold on cross-country skiing, since they find it challenging, tough and even frightening. Brits are more into downhill skiing, and the slopes in Saariselkä are excellent for beginners, families and mid-level downhill skiers. Saariselkä truly is a great place for a holiday and activities.

Riitta Balza fell in love with the colours of autumn foliage and Northern Lights in Inari.

EXPERIENCE SOMETHING MEMORABLE IN SAARISELKÄ

N

ature, good food and peaceful atmosphere are what Jávri is about. ”People who come from big cities really value the pristine wilderness of Lapland, which is absolutely unique” says local restaurateur and entrepreneur Juha Mehtäjärvi. He has made a business of offering the area´s natural best to visitors from home and abroad. New luxurious Lodge in Saariselkä

Mehtäjärvi recently purchased the log chalet that was once the winter residence of Finland´s longest-serving president, Urho Kaleva Kekkonen (1956-1982). Mehtäjärvi is turning the 800-square-metre chalet into Jávri Lodge, a high-end, full-service boutique hotel offering tailor-made dining and accommodation, along with different kind of indoor-activities, nature excursions and outdoor activities. ”This Lodge has seen many statesmen during the Kekkonen´s time and now we want to serve unique experiences to our guests.” Lodge is built from the rare Finnish Lapland Kelo pine. Lodge with its thick old log walls has a peaceful and safe atmosphere. You can enjoy a glass of good wine by fireplace while waiting for the Northern Lights to show up. A swimming pool and two Finnish saunas give you also a nice way to relax. Lodge can accommodate up to 20 guests at a time, with all rooms fitted out with the best linens and features such as custom-made beds. ”We like to think that we have our own, special tv´s at the Lodge. You just need to sit down and admire the nature and wildlife through the big windows. It´s always different and never boring” Activities higlights

Kekkonen had a real passion for the outdoors and spended much time skiing and fishing in the area.

The 2,550-square-kilometre Urho Kekkonen National Parked named after the statesman starts just outside the Lodge. ”Nature and specially National Park, has a big role in our activities but our specialities are activities that take place indoors, like our cooking course. Our chef will guide you through the process of making a successful dish in a Scandinavian style using same ingredients as our restaurant does” says Mehtäjärvi. ”We want to serve everything on a personalised platter to our guests. We have 22 years experience in the restaurant and catering business in Saariselkä area. As we have reached our goal with the restaurant we wanted to expand our business to be able to provide our guests a larger range of services with the same standard we are known for. ” Dining, one of the activities

Our philosophy on food is to appreciate the freshness and cleanness of the local ingredients. The basics of our cooking is to manipulate the ingredients as less as possible to keep their qualities intact. The menu will vary according to what the restaurant’s trusted fisherman and hunters have caught. This is also a motivation for the chefs – the freedom to use their imagination. ”We have made the dining experience as easy as possible to our guest and now we do it on our Lodge as well. It is easy to come and stay as our guest as we take care of the details for you before you arrive.” Mehtäjärvi, known for his attention to details, says, ”If you´re going to do something, do it brilliantly, or not at all.”

ArcticQueen® THE MAGIC AND MYSTIQUE OF THE ARCTIC.

A

t the centre of Saariselkä, there is a small shop full of Finnish design: brands like Marimekko, Iittala, Pentik and Aarikka, as well as unique woolen clothes. Inside you can find Juha-Iisakki and Pirjo, a couple who settled down in the northern Finland after travelling the world. How did ArcticQueen® begin?

We started a family, had three wonderful children; and then the entrepreneur life began. The way out to the world is still open, but we love the north. The amazing season when the sun shines at midnight and you just don’t feel like going to bed, the blue moments of ”kaamos”, the dark winter season when the world is like a fairytale. The extremes, the powerful transitions from season to season, the colors and shades. The wild Arctic Ocean, deserted shorelines, barren cliffs, fells, the endless sky, and especially the freedom. The story of ArcticQueen® began on cold and windy winter days when we felt draught on our legs in the shop. Pirjo made long, colorful woolen leggings for warmth. Our customers noticed the leggings and began to inquire where they were sold. Thus it all began, and soon the selection diversified to wrist warmers, infinity scarves and ponchos that were easy to put on for a little extra warmth. Our patented Hugging Capes were born out of the desire to create a gentle product that is forgiving to the figure and suits everyone. That’s how we came up with the idea of creating additional openings on the cape. Pretty soon we noticed how they fit the bill so well. When Pirjo presented the customers what she was wearing, with the openings and all, it simply invited for an embrace. Oh what joy has bubbled up with those hugs! The spiritual ArcticQueen® is an homage to all northern women. They braved out in rugged conditions, come hell or high water. Just like the women of our mothers’ generation who washed diapers in holes on the frozen lakes during winter. Or those special women from former times: the free spirits who were burnt

as witches. Maybe nowadays they would be called women entrepreneurs ;-) All these amazing and powerful women are the queens of their own lives, real Arctic Queens.

ArcticQueen® -collection is for urban nomads.

ArcticQueen® delights and inspires. Beautiful, powerful and profound, just as the nature in the north. Full of freedom. ArcticQueen® uses therapeutic natural materials: wool, silk, linen and cotton; clothing and accessories that are gentle and attractive.

The snowy season is long in the northern-most slopes in Europe

SAARISELKÄ

S

aariselkä is Europe’s northern-most alpine ski resort. The northern location ensures a long and snowy downhill ski season, which starts in November and lasts at least until May. The ski resort is located in between two fells: fifteen slopes and the world’s longest sled hill offer a variety of options for everyone interested in winter exercising and the outdoors – for beginners as well as the more advanced downhill skiers. The Urho Kekkonen National Park and the vast tundra region reside right beside the downhill ski slopes, which is exceptional in Finland and all over the world. The UK National Park is one of the largest nature preserves in Finland and one of the most popular hiking destinations in the country. In Saariselkä, the season for downhill skiing starts as early as November, right in time for polar nights. Even though the sun won’t rise at all during the dark season of polar nights, slopes are still open for downhill skiing,

24

since seven of them are illuminated. The circumstances add their own ambiance for downhill skiing. The atmosphere in the slopes is entirely different during spring, as the sun is shining on the pure white slopes a little longer everyday – and the nightless night of Lapland is drawing near. The longest slope in Saariselkä is 1050 meters long and the highest vertical drop is 180 meters. To add diversity to downhill skiing, the slopes have many different structures and trick locations: a Ski Cross track for skis is located near the chairlift, and a Free Ride Park is situated in the forest near the cafeteria. On the slopes of another fell, there is a Snow Park specifically for downhill skiers. The newest sightseeing place in Saariselkä is also located in the ski resort, which has an overpass built for downhill skiers. From the overpass, visitors get to see an astonishing view over the fells. The skiing school of Saariselkä Ski & Sport Resort

offers much more than downhill skiing in the programme. It is aimed at amateurs of different levels, so the entire family can enroll in the skiing school together. The lift company trains local youth as skiing teachers and slope workers, and the entire staff at the skiing center speaks at least English. Families with children are favored, since everyone under the age of 16 can downhill ski on a minor’s ticket. For kids, there is also a slope for practicing. The elevator tickets can easily be bought with a smart phone. Saarselkä is also known for the longest sled hill, which is over one kilometer long – 1300 meters to be exact. Both children and adults alike can enjoy sledding here – the hill is free to use and there are sleds available for everyone. Via the new connective route, one can slide straight down to the chairlift, and hop on the lift to get right back on the top of the hill. Amidst all the fun outdoors, the ski resort’s restaurant offers hot beverages and lunch as well as local de-

The ski resort’s equipment rental shop has a selection of skis, boards, telemark ski equipment etc. The Ski Shop sells Atomic skis and Burton snowboards that can be tried out in the rental shop. You can also add smaller winter sport equipment to your outdoor gear collection, for example ski goggles and sunglasses, gloves and beanies. Most of the owners of Ski Saariselkä Oy, the elevator company that maintains the slopes in Saariselkä, have been skiing since young age. Thanks to their active skiing years, they have versatile experience on the domestic and foreign ski resorts as well as their winter and summer selection. All of the owners are originally from north, from Inari or Rovaniemi, so they are familiar with the arctic conditions.

heart of nature - the Urho Kekkonen National Park. Enjoy the midnight sun and ‘nightless nights’ in summer or the magical and peaceful atmosphere of the Arctic winter. On clear nights, you can wonder in awe at the dazzling starlit sky and magnificent Aurora Borealis as you make you way along a 2.1 km trail, which is kept open throughout the year. This one-hour hike is easy enough for children too, but is not wheelchair accessible due to its steep terrain. In winter, the trail is cleared from snow on a regular basis. Access to the trail is from the entrance to the Urho Kekkonen National Park. An arched bridge takes you across the Luttojoki River and then along a gully to the east of the river. As the clearly marked trail is not lit, it is advisable to take along a flashlight or headlamp. A cabin is planned to be built along this circular trail in 2016 as a resting place - one end of the building will be open during the day while the other end can be booked for various events. The hut offers an excellent opportunity to study northern nature: the autumn colours and the Northern Lights, the winter landscape, the polar night and the days when the sun never sets.

The population of the entire Inari village multiplies as people gather to listen to music of the indigenous peoples in the Ijahis Idja music event, or watch movies at the movie festival of the indigenous peoples, Skábmagovat. Ijahis Idja

Around the time of mid-August, the Ijahis Idja – the Nightless Night music event of the indigenous peoples draws fans of Sami music in Inari. At the event, guests can hear traditional joik singing as well as modern Sami music. The event is also enriched by the indigenous guests abiding by the annually changing themes with their musical traditions. This musical event of the indigenous peoples has its roots at the beginning of the 21st century. In the course of the years, the event has evolved and assisted in bringing international stars in Inari. Right from the start, the Ijahis Idja has been kept as an event for the whole family. Now the two-day event is dedicated to children and teens in the form of different kinds of shows and concerts. The main concert is held at the homestead of the Sami culture center Sajos, and this is where the entire family gets to enjoy the brightest stars of Sami music.

The themes of the movies vary from across the globe according to the indigenous peoples, but it also entails Sami films. One of the specialties of the event entails the Northern Lights Theatre, a white screen built out of snow, and an auditorium with a ceiling of pure sky, where stars are shining and the Northern Lights are blazing. In the outdoor theatre, people have been able to enjoy, for example, South-American short movies in -30 degrees Celsius. In addition to the Northern Lights Theatre, movies are also shown in the auditoriums of Siida and Sajos during the event weekend. The Skábmagovat is arranged annually at the end of January.

The same transfer also conveniently takes you back to the airport from Saariselkä. www.eskelisen-lapinlinjat.com An airport transfer to or from Inari to the Ivalo airport must be booked in advance. www.kuljetusliikeilmarislant.fi The region’s taxis will come out to meet the flights and are a handy way to reach your intended destination from the airport. You can also rent a car to a destination of your choosing.

ADVENTURES Adventures in the Great Outdoors or the pervading tranquillity of nature, the choice is yours. There is plenty to do and see year-round, with something for everyone, including silence. Inari-Saariselkä lies far away in the North, where you are surrounded by the Arctic nature and the Sami culture.

BY TRAIN AND BUS The train will take you to Rovaniemi, where you will find numerous bus connections to Saariselkä and elsewhere in northern Lapland. Thanks to the well-run public transport you can even get as far as the Arctic Ocean! www.vr.fi www.eskelisen-lapinlinjat.com SERVICE LISTING: Taxi
