Cinema Dear Reader, You may or may not be aware that the cinema at the Rincon de Loix regularly shows films in English. As far as we have been able to establish, this happens on a Friday evening. Try as we might, we have been unable to get their advanced listings from them, so we cannot tell you what films are being shown and when. The only solution would seem to be that you go down there and look for yourselves as the posters and screening times for each week are clearly displayed on the windows. Entrance is about four euros and they are pretty up to date with the latest films on general release.

The Postman’s Sack

The argument for and against arming the British Police officer has been raging on for years and its happening again in light of the recent terror attacks around Europe. It is often held up against the American police who sometimes, on the surface, might seem to be a bit trigger happy and that guns beget more guns. Here in Spain, the Police are armed at all levels and after the atrocity of Barcelona and the following round up of the offenders seems to show how it can be done without the entire population running off to buy a gun. I realise , of , course there are vast differences of legislation for owning and acquiring a gun around the world, but it does seem like a good idea that the police should be armed. ANON BENIDORM

Sporting Alfaz Cricket Club Sporting Alfas Cricket Club was founded in 1995 in co-operation with the local Town Hall and playing on a golf driving range provided by the Town Hall. Founder members were Andrew Bond, Pamela Dawson Tasker and Clive Woodbridge. We are located in Albir, just a couple of minutes walk from the beach (see map). Cricket has only recently been recognised as a sport in Spain but popularity is growing, particularly with expats and Asians although Spanish schools are slowly becoming more interested. Our season usually runs from February until November so as you can see, it is much longer than that of the UK. We host many touring sides from the UK, some returning year after year, as well as being in the Eastern and Central League which includes teams from Madrid and Valencia. We don’t just play at the weekends but also have many midweek fixtures. All our fixtures for the season can

Page 14

be found here: https://sacc.secure-club.com/ fixtures/default.aspx with normally over 60 fixtures a year. Food and drinks are available in our Cabin. Spain has a National Team with the current captain, Christian Muñoz playing for Sporting Alfas. In fact, several members of SACC have played for the National Team including Gary Crompton, Ben Fletcher, Phill Pennick, Faran Afzal whilst several other members have played for (and currently still do play for) Spain Over 40’s. If you are interested in cricket, be it playing, watching, umpiring or scoring please contact Kevin Laundon on 637 120 660 or by email chairman@sportingalfascc.com. Golf is BIG in Spain and we are blessed with 5 courses all within a few minutes drive of Benidorm. The First to look at is the biggest and probably the most impressive, Melia Villaitana which is located on the Avd. Alcade Eduardo Zaplana otherwise known as the Terra Mitica road. This complex boasts two courses, one a par 62, shorter than most with some very demanding holes, lots of hazards and some difficult terrain. One of the trickiest things is navigating your way from one tee to the next. The other, is a long par 72 and a good course to play for the big hitters although its also quite forgiving for the less experienced golfer. A lovely clubhouse and a fully fitted golf shop support these courses with all the usual amenities such as buggy and club hire available plus for the devoted there is a lovely hotel there if you want to play day-in, day-out. Bookings can be made by phoning 912 764 747 and as with most courses around here, they have English speaking staff. Next is the newest, its only been open a couple of months and it is in Finestrat village

It is only nine holes and as it has only just opened, the club house isn’t finished yet although construction is well under way. There is a small pro shop and buggy and club hire is available. Bookings can be made by ringing 637 445 045 and they speak English. There are two local pitch and put courses, one in Benidorm itself. Las Rejas is located just a couple of roads back from Poniente beach on the Calle Presidente Adolfo Suarez tucked in amongst the high rise blocks and bookings can be made by ringing 966 889 775 and again, they speak English. This course is a delightfull 9 hole with opportunities to get some of the longer clubs out of the bag. A bar and small pro shop complete the complex. The second is Sierra Cortina on the Calle Amsterdam. Located a few hundred yards up from Carrefour in Finestrat, bookings can be made on 966 112 093. Eighteen holes of varying levels of difficulty and you can use just about every club in the bag, with club, trolley and buggy hire available from the small pro shop and a nice little bar to relax in afterwards.

la Cala & Finestrat The village of Finestrat and the beachside resort of Cala Finestrat are both located in the Marina Baixa region on the Costa Blanca Close to neighbouring Benidorm and around 40 kilometres from the city of Alicante and its International Airport. The village nestles on the mountainside of Puig Campana affording wonderful views to the mountains and out to the coast and Mediterranean. The charming village has a typical Moorish feel, with colourfully painted houses and narrow cobbled streets. Cala Finestrat on the other hand has increasingly become more and more popular and its development has made it almost an extension to Benidorm itself. Finestrat Village The village of Finestrat has retained much of its old school charm, with its Moorish feel and ancient monuments, including the 13th century Castell (Castle) de Finestrat, the 18th century Church of Saint Bartholomew, La

Torre (the watch tower) and the Hermitage Crist de Remei. There is a scattering of bars and restaurants servicing typical Mediterranean cuisine and a few shops and amenities. However, close by you have all the amenities and facilities of Cala Finestrat and Benidorm. Cala Finestrat Cala Finestrat is a beach resort located just three kilometres away from busy Benidorm. The resort offers adequate amenities and facilities, a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops. Everything else you need is available in Benidorm, which is easily reached by bus and taxi. Cala Finestrat is suitable for families and couples looking for a relaxed beach resort, yet close to lots of activities and amenities should you desire. During the summer months an arts and crafts market is held on the promenade during the afternoon.

Eating Out Feature

The Sneaky Eater! The Sneaky Eater is an article about different restaurants around our area. The restaurants are not necessarily advertisers in the Little Black Book, and the owners and staff were not aware that the restaurant would be featured, so we can take it that the service would be the same as any customer would receive.

El Pantano Avenida de Europe, 4 Orcheta, 03579 Tel. 966 855 017 For this months review we are going out into the country a bit, to Orcheta to be precise just outside Villa Joyosa and the restaurant is called El Pantano. It’s a bright and airy establishment with plenty of room for indoor and outdoor dining and it has a large terrace with some really nice views overlooking a large reservoir which nestles in a valley between the mountains. To the food. El Pantano has a fairly comprehensive menú with a large selection of dishes with some delightful names and , trust me , there will be something on there for all tastes, and its in English. Gareth and his team work hard to accommodate and yet the prices are very reasonable, but what stands out about this eatery is the size of the portions. It seems that he can not serve up anything in a small way. Friends had a prawn cocktail starter that was served in something the size of a washing up bowl. Others chose from the burger menu and crickey, what a burger. Homemade and it must of weighed in at least a half pound accompanied with home made chips and a lovely side salad. Also available are steaks, chicken, pork and fish and all the dishes where for the large appetite but don’t worry, you can take a doggy bag home without

Page 20

offending anyone. To summise, some restaurants pile it high and sell it cheap to disquise the lack of quality. Here they don’t. Its excellent food, served a plenty and priced reasonably. It really is worth a visit and booking is advised. Oh and dont forget, BRING YOUR APPETITE

ALBIR Albir is within Alfaz del Pi which is just slightly inland on the other side of the N-322 which divides the two areas. Albir is also referred to as El Albir or L’Albir. It is situated between two international airports, to the south there is Alicante International airport (about 50km) and to the north there is Valencia international airport (about 140km). Albir has a Mediterranean climate which means hot summers with mild winters and very little rain. Albir is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year making it an ideal holiday destination pretty much all year round. It is an easy drive from three international airports of Alicante, Valencia and Murcia. Albir’s main beach is called “Playa de Racó de l’Albir” and is six hundred meters in length and has magnificent views of the Penon de Ifach in Calpe. Parking can be tricky in the summer months so be sure

Alfaz & Albir to arrive early. During the holiday season there are always life-guards on duty as is the case in all the beach resorts on the Costa Blanca. The blue flag beach also has two play areas on the beach for the children. Toilets are located on the boulevard. MARKETS

During the summer months, there is a small market of local craft and artwork trades at the upper end of the sea front where you can purchase original jewellery, leather goods and souvenirs.

L’Alfás del Pi

L´Alfàs del Pi can say it is a mosaic of cultures and that´s because over 80 nationalities live together in this town on the Costa Blanca. A fact that, without doubt, culturally enriches L´Alfàs. 12 months, 12 festivals that diversify our cultural activity, bringing different forms of expression closer to citizens of all ages. The quality behind the cultural events carried out by the Councillorship for Culture during the last few years is unquestionable, proven by the fact that the number of spectators that have been able to enjoy the activities that our town offers has grown. It is not unusual to see a “sold out” sign. During the months of May and June, cultural events are still centred on the Casa de Cultura. We can highlight the 6th INTERNATIONAL CHOIR FESTIVAL in which choirs composed of singers, with over 20 different nationalities, will get together and specially highlighting the participation of the COR DE LA GENERALITAT VALENCIANA choir. Happy and festive choral concerts that I am convinced with delight you all.

As Councillor for Education and Youth, I wish to emphasize that it is important that we offer a diverse cultural offer to the people, that we educate children so they learn different arts and artistic expressions and that we provide our youth with resources to spend their free time and complete their education. These are the basic objectives of our cultural, educational and youth policies, always under the premise of excellence. Enjoy everything L´Alfàs offers you during these two months! Villa Joyosa Rugby Club

was founded in February 1982 by Ignacio Davila who was a former Valencia RC player. Initially there was no pitch as such, so games were played on some spare ground at the Municipal Sports Ctr. Later, thanks to a lot of lobbying and a sympathetic Sports Councillor, a proper pitch was created, and in 1983 a senior team was entered into the second division finishing a creditable third.

and stayed there for the next two years until in 2006 - 2007 season they rose to the Division of Honour B league and then the following season to the top league Division of Honour. The 2009 - 2010 season saw Vila Rugby finish runners up in both the Division of Honour AND the Kings Cup and the following season succeeded in winning the Division of Honour with the honour of being the first Alicante based team to do so. The 2011 - 2012 season saw Vila win the Super Cup and they also competed in the Amlin Challenge Cup ( European ). Sadly since then their fortunes have taken a bit of a dip, and in the 2012 - 2013 season they were relegated to the Division of Honour B league, where, to this day, they remain. Never the less, the club has still managed to produce some stars who have gone on to represent the Spanish National side in international competitions. The Brits have always been a large part of the club and continue to be a large part of the club, in fact the current president is a Brit. and they continue to support all aspects of the club, maintaining a complete range of teams from Juniors, Ladies and Cadets all within La Vila Rugby For more information, contact the club on 648 696 118 or 608 068 208 or email oficina@rugbylavila.net Your support would be most appreciated and attendance for home matches is a mere 5₏ entrance with a bar and snacks available September Fixtures 1st league fixture, at 12:30 am at Villajoyosa’s rugby field on 17th, CR Vila - CR El Salvador. The 2nd league fixture, 24th September FC Barcelona - CR La Vila, is at Barcelona stadium.

From 1983, the first team had its ups and downs until a policy of semi-professionalism was adopted in 2000 which resulted in the first team being promoted to the premier division bringing them into contention with teams from Murcia, Castille La Mancha and of course Valencia. In their first season they finished fourth. The following season , 2001 - 2002 they gained promotion to the First National league

Villajoyosa History Located at the northern end of the Costa Blanca in the Alicante province, Villajoyosa (La Villa Joiosa) is the capital of the Marina Baixa district. A delightful and historic town, it stretches the length of a lovely wide, sandy beach, with pretty coloured fishing houses running along the seafront and is encompassed with a backdrop of mountains. Situated around 26 kilometres from the city of Alicante and Alicante International airport, Villajoyosa is a well-situated destination, ideal for exploring the rest of the Costa Blanca coastline.

Villajoyosa has a rich cultural heritage. It’s history as a town dates back to the 6th century and it has been settled by the Greeks, Phoenicians, the Romans and of course the Moors, when it actually fell into some decline, which is unusual for a Moorish occupied town. The town as it is known today was founded in 1293 by an Admiral who served in the Kingdom of Aragon’s navy. It’s name Villajoyosa, literally means Joyful town. Throughout the centuries Villajoyosa has been an important trade point along this coastline; trading in olive oil, cereals and wine, and shipbuilding, amongst others. But probably what it is most famous for is chocolate. During the 19th century the town started to develop a chocolate-making industry. Because of its trade connections, it started importing cocoa from Ecuador and Venezuela and the industry grew and grew. The chocolate brand, ‘Valor’, which can be found in most shops and supermarkets throughout Spain comes from Villajoyosa.

Food Glorious Food The following venues are all rated between 4 and 5 stars on Trip Advisor for Benidorm!

Amigos Restaurant and Roof Terrace “Superb” We visited three times during our weeks stay. The menu is amazing and the team are rightly very proud of what they serve. Steak is amazing and I’d only return to Benidorm for that steak! You can’t be disappointed with this restaurant.

Pizzeria L’Originale “Pasta to die for” Visited early March on a friend’s recommendation. The pasta was the best we’ve ever tasted and the garlic bread divine. The pizza was light but full of flavour. The service was attentive and efficient-can’t wait till our next visit

Yorkshire Pride 1 “Home from Home”

My boyfriend has always spoken highly of Yorkshire Pride and he introduced me, visited three times in three days and was very impressed. Food is all home cooked and fresh, and staff are so friendly. Love the fact coffee is served in proper mugs, like home from home. Thank you to the staff for making us feel so welcome Page 28
