Tudor Lakatos è uno zingaro 40enne che vive nel ghetto di Somcuta, nella parte settentrionale della Romania. Abita con la moglie e la figlia in una baracca fatiscente e svolge con impegno il lavoro di insegnante nella scuola locale. Il suo sogno, però, è un altro. Tudor vuole diventare famoso come imitatore di Elvis Presley ed è per questo che passa tutto il suo tempo libero a imparare le mosse del “Re”, a tradurre in lingua rom i testi delle sue canzoni e a esercitarsi con la chitarra. La regista lo segue anche quando lascia il paese per andare nella città portuale di Costanza, dove cercherà di sfondare con il nome d’arte di Elvis Rromano (l’Elvis zingaro) e il genere musicale di sua “invenzione”, una versione gipsy del rock: il Rock and Rom. Storia del culto appassionato di un mito “fuori tempo massimo”.

Tudor Lakatos is a forty-year-old gypsy who lives in the ghetto of Somcuta, in northern Romania. He lives with his wife and daughter in a tumbledown shack and is a conscientious teacher at the local school. But he has a dream. Tudor wants to become famous for his Elvis Presley impressions and this is why he spends all his spare time learning “The King’s” moves and translating the lyrics of his songs into Rom and practising them on the guitar. The director of the film follows him even when he leaves his town to go to the port of Constanta, where he is determined to make it as Elvis Romano (the gypsy Elvis), accompanied by his own, personally “invented” music, a gypsy-style rock: Rock and Rom. The story of the cult following of a myth past its “sell-by date”.
