THE DALI MUSEUM
One Dali Boulevard 727-823-3767 TheDali.org; @TheDaliMuseum #TheDali
The Dali features one of the most acclaimed collections of a single modern artist in the world. It houses more than 2,400 pieces of art by Dali, including 96 oil paintings and eight of the artist’s renowned Master Works—paintings that measure more than five feet.
Designed by architect Yann Weymouth of HOK, the Dali Museum combines the rational with the fantastical: a simple rectangle with 18-inch-thick hurricane-proof walls out of which erupts a large geodesic glass bubble known as the enigma providing a kaleidoscopic view of St. Petersburg. The enigma, comprised of 1,062 triangular pieces of glass, stands 75 feet at its tallest point, a 21st Century homage to the dome that adorns Dali’s museum in Spain. Inside, the Dali houses a helical staircase resembling a strand of DNA. The helix was recognized by Dali as evidence of the divine in nature. The Dali Mathematical Garden creates a unique environment of learning and tranquility, allowing students to experience the relationship between math and nature. A labyrinth in the southeast corner invites exploration and well-being. The museum’s Café Gala, named in honor of Dali’s wife, is a casual eatery operated by local hospitality leader Steve Westphal, profiled as a Vinoy club member in this issue. (See to the theatre that shows films about the work of Dale Chihuly, all included with admission to the Collection. A visit to the Morean Glass Studio for live local glass-blowing demonstrations is also included. Chihuly is credited with revolutionizing the Studio Glass movement and elevating the perception of the glass medium from the realm of craft to fine art. He is renowned for his ambitious architectural installations around the world, in historic cities, museums and gardens. Chihuly’s work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Corning Museum of Glass. Chihuly Collection hours are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12-5 p.m. Sundays (Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Days). All proceeds stay local to St. Petersburg to help support and sustain the educational programs at the Morean Arts Center located directly across the street at 719 Central Avenue.
page 6) You can eat inside or out on the Avant-Garden patio, making a visit to Café Gala a destination in itself—a museum ticket is not required. Likewise, the museum store, stocked with Dali-inspired gifts, books, jewelry and home accessories, is admission-free. Exhibits and events include: • At Home with Dalí which features a diverse group of portraits by five photographers. The nearly 40 images, dating from the 1950s and early 1960s, provide an intimate view of Dalí in his home environment in Spain. • Nature Journaling happens January 16 and April 10, 2021. In the spirit of Vincent van Gogh, we will practice being inspired by the beauty of nature around us. Enjoy a walk from The Dalí Museum to Demen’s Landing with time to journal about your experience–prompted by the teachers of Keep St. Pete Lit. • View 8 of Dalí’s Masterworks in augmented reality (AR) in the museum’s permanent collection using AR technology to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning behind their complex imagery. • Using cutting-edge artificial intelligence, Dalí Lives provides museum visitors an opportunity to learn more about Salvador Dalí’s life from the person who knew him best: the artist himself.

THE GLAZER FAMILY DONATES A PLAYGROUND TO THE ST. PETE PIER
The City of St. Petersburg announced a 30-year agreement with the Glazer Vision Foundation in support of the playground at the St. Pete Pier. The Glazer Vision Foundation contributed $1.5 million toward the Glazer Family Playground, located within the new 26-acre St. Pete Pier District.
The marine-themed playground is one-of-a-kind, designed by Earthscape in collaboration with the City and W Architecture. The theme of the playground reflects the context of the Pier and nearby coastal creatures. Designers asked, “What would newly hatched baby sea turtles see as they move from sand-to-sea?” The result is a playground with an immersive shoreline narrative.
The junior play area represents the beach. An overturned sand bucket lies beside a curious starfish. A nearby mound with a hill slide and climbing log driftwood is a turtle’s nest from which baby turtles make their way to the water. Follow the turtles to where the shoreline transitions into deeper waters. A lifeguard tower overlooks an osprey’s nest log climber perched by the water’s edge. Further into the deep, an immense kraken sea monster swirls around a multilevel seaweed tower and a sunken shipwreck.
Paths and gathering spaces link the spaces together, creating a hub of activity for visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy. The St. Pete Pier™ marine themed playground is a reflection of the City inviting children and adults to play in a unique and creative way as part of this incredible new destination.
“For a child, there’s no better place to have fun than at the playground,” said Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Co-Owner and President of the Glazer Vision Foundation. “Our foundation wants to reach every child in Tampa Bay, whether that’s by providing better opportunities to learn in school through free eye exams and glasses for all children, or with a safe space to play and create lifelong memories with family and friends. Glazer Family Playground is truly a family destination, and we are proud to announce this addition to the St. Pete Pier District to be enjoyed for years to come.”
“We couldn’t be more excited for the Glazer name to become a fixture at the St. Pete Pier,” said Mayor Rick Kriseman. “I was not surprised to learn of their desire to name the pier’s sea-themed playground given their focus on family and their commitment to the entire Tampa Bay region. We are appreciative of this commitment and all that the Glazers do to make Tampa Bay a better place to live, work, and play.” Seaside Seabird Sanctuary SEASIDE SEABIRD SANCTUARY
