UN LABORATORIO PER IL FUTURO

di Luca Molinari

PADIGLIONE ITALIA EXPO MILANO 2015

ITALY PAVILION MILAN EXPO 2015

A LABORATORY FOR THE FUTURE

by Luca Molinari

Visiting a construction site is always an unexpected source of surprise and discovery. A building under construction harnesses all the power of a vision brought to life, as well as revealing much about the architectural concept and its expectations, its methods and vision of the future. The building site is a difficult wager to manage, because compressed into its flesh of steel, glass and concrete are the desires, knowledge and expectations of those who designed it, those who commissioned it, those who are building it and, clearly, those who will then occupy it. These sensations were multiplied exponentially the first time I was able to visit the construction site of the Italy Pavilion for Expo 2015. Until that moment there had only been blueprints, renderings, descriptions and images, but then a proper visit to the site clarified many aspects that had eluded me, and opened unexpected visions. What we have is a building that is complex and, for the history it carries, difficult: the only pavilion destined to remain after the Expo, designed to represent our country, twice the size of all the other architecture on the Expo grounds. But for this we certainly cannot hold responsible the group of architects who won an international competition by responding to the very detailed and clear objectives articulated in the brief. In April of 2013, sixty eight professional studios presented their proposals for the new Italy Pavilion, participating in one of the very few open international competitions announced for Expo 2015. The request was to design the main building and a series of structures situated around the Cardo, that would function as an entrance wing to the pavilion of the organizing country of this important event. The entire system called for approximately 27,000 square meters of constructed area, more than half of which would remain after the end of October, as a memento of the Expo and also as the hub of a system of public spaces and green areas that would be the true collective memory and the basis upon which to completely rethink this new portion of the city.
