Once the orientation has been established, the abuser may be counseled about behaviors that may appear during treatment and that could potentially prevent positive growth and emotional stability—that prevent a movement toward empowerment.

When a client is made aware that others in therapy have experienced these potential roadblocks to recovery, he/she may be better able to cope if and when such behaviors begin to appear.
