SPRING 2016

SUPERINTENDENT’S VIEWPOINT by Susan Wakefield, Superintendent

Reflections

T

ypically in this issue I review the highlights of the year, but as I conclude my final year as superintendent, I can’t help but reflect on the past decade. It’s been an amazing journey and while some days seemed way too long, these past ten years have flown by. Like anything we do in life, it isn’t always what we expect it to be and then it turns out better than we hoped it would be.

May 26 Plainwell High School GRADUATION Streidl Field • 7pm

The past eight years were possibly the most tumultuous in the history of public education in Michigan. Between the recession and budget cuts, common core and standardized testing, and more new laws regulating education than I can count, it seems as though we were in a constant state of flux. And through it all, with the efforts of all, we continued to get better each year. I was recently asked by an RHS student what is the most notable accomplishment of my career at PCS and I honestly could not identify one single event or item. We laid turf on our stadium field, built a beautiful Performing Arts Center, started all day Kindergarten, put an iPad in the hands of every high school student, established a STEM Academy at our middle school and are adding STEM at the high school in the fall. We started an Early College program by which students can simultaneously earn their high school diploma and Associate’s degree. We built an incredible curriculum and multiple tiers of support for our students to be successful. We gave parents online access to grade books so they could monitor their child’s grades and partner with us in helping students succeed. And we never lost sight of the larger definition of success, one that incorporates a child’s confidence and sense of self-worth. None of these were “my” accomplishments, but they are all things in which I am grateful to have played a part.

June 10 LAST DAY OF SCHOOL 1/2 Day - All Students End of 3rd Trimester

This same RHS student also asked me if I had accomplished everything I wanted to accomplish. That answer came easily. It is a resounding “no.” I think that is a part of every transition; recognizing that there is always so much more to do. The good news is that I have every confidence that it will get done. Matt Montange, our new superintendent, will soon be here. I know he will quickly come to appreciate the strengths of our incredible administrative team and staff that drive the success of this district. If we keep getting better day by day, we will have no choice but to be wildly successful! Thank you for your continued support throughout the past decade. And have a wonderful summer! n

FOCUS ON CURRICULUM by Bob Van Dis, Director of Curriculum

Plainwell High School Launches STEM Pathways

S

TEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math. STEM education takes science and math beyond the necessary knowledge, concepts, and skills in those disciplines to embrace how that knowledge is applied through engineering and technology. In the best STEM classes, students go beyond even the application of science and math to create and discover things on their own – doing the actual work of scientists, researchers, engineers, and innovators. Following the success of our middle school STEM Academy, Plainwell High School will launch two STEM Pathways next fall. These Pathways will use the nationally recognized curriculum and training from Project Lead the Way. Project Lead the Way (or PLTW) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to prepare students for the global economy by providing K-12 STEM programs to public, private, and charter schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in rural, urban, and suburban districts. They offer a problem-based curriculum combined with a teacher professional development. Working with PLTW’s Michigan representative, we will launch two PLTW Pathways next fall. PLTW Engineering Pathway In these four courses, students will apply engineering, science, math, and technology to solve complex, open-ended problems in a real-world context. Students will focus on the

process of defining and solving a problem, as they learn how to apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation. The courses are: • Introduction to Engineering Design 9th grade course for 2016-17 • Principals of Engineering 10th grade course for 2017-18 • Specialization Courses TBD 11th grade course(s) for 2018-19 • Engineering Design and Development 12th grade for 2019-20

Dr. Brad Whitmore named PCS’ Outstanding Alum for 2016

NGC 4038-4039 • Antennae Galaxies

P

lainwell Community Schools is proud to announce that Dr. Brad Whitmore, ‘71, has been given the honor of the 2016 Outstanding Alumni Award for his contributions to science and space exploration with his work on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Whitmore epitomizes the word “outstanding” and clearly deserves this recognition.

Dr. Brad Whitmore graduated from Plainwell High School in 1971. A member of the Plainwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame, he played football (team tri-captain under Jack Streidl), basketball, and ran track. He held the school record in the high jump and long jump for several years. He was the president of the National Honor Society his senior year. Dr. Whitmore attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1975 with a degree in physics and astronomy, and a PhD in astronomy in 1980. After teaching astronomy at Arizona State University for two years, Dr. Whitmore moved to the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland in 1983, where he helps operate the NASA Hubble Space Telescope, one of the most iconic science instruments ever built.

NASA, ESA, and The Hubble Heritage (STScI/AURA)-ESA/Hubble Collaboration • HST/ACS • STScI-PRC06-46

Dr. Whitmore’s contributions at STScI include designing the observing proposal system used by astronomers, being the group lead for the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, one of the primary instruments onboard Hubble, and being the Head of the Instruments Division and eventually the Hubble Project Scientist at STScI. More recently he led the effort to develop the Hubble Legacy Archive (http://hla.stsci.edu) and the Hubble Source Catalog. Besides helping to operate Hubble, Dr. Whitmore also does scientific research. He specializes in collisions between galaxies and the star clusters that form during these collisions. His work has been published in a variety of scientific journals, as well as popular magazines (e.g., the November 3, 1997 cover of Newsweek), books, and calendars. He is best known for his images of the Antennae galaxies, a pair of colliding galaxies undergoing a spectacular burst of star formation. One of his results was also mentioned in a Peanuts cartoon! Dr. Whitmore’s “outside” interests include biking (e.g., the Race Across America as part of a relay team), orienteering (three time national champion in his age group), kayaking, and sailing on the Chesapeake in his sailboat named Meander. He lives on a small hobby farm with his wife Julie Klein Whitmore (PHS, Class of ‘72). Dr. Brad Whitmore will be honored at Plainwell High School’s 144th Commencement Ceremony, on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., Streidl Field. n W W W. P L A I N W E L L S C H O O L S . O R G

MICHIGAN COLLEGES, CAMPUS TOURS (grades 9-12)

A key part of deciding which college to go to is finding a good fit. A college catalog, brochure, or website can only show you so much. The best way to get a feel for what a college is like is to visit the college in person. Being on campus helps students determine whether a college is the right place for them. A campus visit is a great opportunity to get a feel for a college. Some of the brightest futures are formed when teens walk around a quad, sit on the lawn, visit the library and envision themselves in the classrooms. Take this opportunity to visit six great MIchigan colleges: Central, Eastern, Grand Valley, Michigan State, University of Michigan, and Western Michigan University. Participants only need to bring $5-10 or a sack lunch. Kick-off meeting at Community Ed., 422 Acorn Street. on Wednesday, June 15 at 5:00 p.m. Plan for approximately 20 minutes. Registration deadline is Thursday, June 9. Dates: 6/23, 6/30, 7/14, 7/21, 7/28, 8/4 (Thursdays) Time: 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (approx.) Cost: $105 for the 6-week session, and $5-10 or a sack lunch for each trip
