Sustainability
at the core of the 2024 Edition Sustainability continues to be the industry buzzword as the aviation sector pushes ahead to meet its 2050 net zero emissions target. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that it will take up to USD 5.3 trillion and a combination of measures including maximum elimination of emissions at the source, use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), new technology, infrastructure and operational efficiencies as well as offsets and carbon capture to realize this goal over the next two plus decades. These measures and more will be high on the agenda at Singapore Airshow 2024. The event’s thought leader AeroForum series will see discussions led by McKinsey and Company’s experts, while What’s Next@Airshow will feature innovations in this space by a selection of startups in partnership with accelerator Starburst. The AeroForum discussion led by McKinsey & Company titled “Sustainable Aviation – Navigating Complexities and Crafting Winning Strategies”, will feature a panel comprising senior executives from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Airbus, Cathay Pacific Airways, EcoCeres Inc and FlyORO. Panelists will identify the key factors critical to achieving sustainable aviation through the use of SAF, and focus on the challenges impeding wider SAF production such as cost, production, scalability, technology, feedstock availability, consumer behaviour. The need for industry wide cooperation in overcoming these challenges and the financial implications of SAF adoption, governmental subsidies, incentives and sourcing strategies will also be addressed.
To further the discussion on sustainable aviation, the Airshow will host a breakfast chat with Mr Han Kok Juan, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), in collaboration with McKinsey and Company, to discuss the role the Asia Pacific region now plays in the development of sustainable innovations and solutions globally.
“
We are cognizant that meeting the target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 will require partnership and a concerted effort, involving the aviation industry, as well as new players in technology and innovation. As a leading global destination for industry dialogues and strategic collaborations, Singapore Airshow will provide a critical platform to achieving the industry’s collective goals in innovation and sustainability Mr Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director of Experia, organiser of Singapore Airshow 2024.

Building a pipeline of talent To keep pace with the anticipated growth of the commercial and private travel markets, the aviation industry will need to hire 1.3 million professionals by 2032 according to Canadian aviation training company CAE in its 2023 Aviation Talent Forecast report. Overall, the civil aviation industry will need 284,000 new pilots, 402,000 new technicians and 599,000 cabin crew over the next 10 years as the number of aircraft in service grows. To address this pressing need to developing a sustainable talent pool, the Airshow has also collaborated with educational institutions to showcase the sector’s best to students, who will make up its future talent pool. Approximately 3,000 students are expected to attend this year’s Airshow and benefit from the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workshops by Rolls Royce; and Student Ambassador Programmes organised by the Bell, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, Hope Technik, Lufthansa Technik, Republic of Singapore Air Force, and Rolls Royce. The Endeavor Space Challenge organised in collaboration with Science Centre Singapore and US-based Kallman Worldwide as well as the Innovation Hangar Challenge run in collaboration with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) offers young aviation talents a chance to apply their imagination, creativity and intellect as they tap into the guidance and expertise of senior aviation and aerospace engineers.

sustainable destination While sustainability was top of mind in the content planning for the show – it will also be front and centre when it comes to the set up and management of the Airshow. For the first time, organisers have partnered with CarbonClick, to allow attendees to offset the carbon emissions associated with their travel via the purchase of carbon credits, which will go to support highquality, fully certified climate projects such as the Rimba Raya biodiversity reserve in Indonesia and the wind power project in India. In addition, the Changi Exhibition Centre that will house the Airshow will be powered by solar energy via its 15,000 solar roof panels and also a Sustainable Networking Zone where all its booths, furniture and fittings are manufactured using recycled waste materials. And for the first time, Hyundai’s fleet of IONIQ 5 electric vehicle will be deployed to transport Singapore Airshow’s VIP delegates. Efforts such as these will also go a long way towards aligning with the Singapore Government’s efforts to developing Singapore as Asia Pacific’s leading sustainable MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) destination by 2030.
Innovation on Show New technology continues to be a mainstay at the Airshow. Both established aviation heavyweights and promising startups will showcase their innovative solutions at Singapore Airshow 2024. “What’s Next@Singapore Airshow” will see 41 start-ups from 15 countries and regions including Australia, India, Netherlands, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, the United States, and the United Kingdom showcasing their cutting-edge innovations, dual use technologies, air traffic management and digitalisation in aerospace and defence industries.

BUSINESS AVIATION The Asia Pacific region is home to some of the world's fastest-growing economies, driving the expansion of business activities across various sectors. As businesses expand their operations across the region, the need for efficient and flexible transportation solutions becomes paramount. While the APAC region offers immense growth potential for business aviation, navigating the regulatory landscape can be challenging. Each country has its own set of regulations governing aircraft operations, air traffic management, and customs procedures, creating compliance complexities for operators conducting cross-border flights.
According to Jetcraft’s latest Pre-Owned market forecast “Southeast Asia and Australia are driving the demand for business aviation in the region but are behind the trend in increasing flight hours ( in comparison to the EMEA and Americas regions) , while Greater China has become a ripe source of aircraft and sees demand for charter services increasing” The latest Global Jet Market outlook forecast the market will see 635 business jets transactions between 2023 and 2027 with 30% of these transactions for new and 70% for used jets

THE BIZLINERS ECOSYSTEM MODIFIED AIRLINERS
Green BBJ enroute to outfitting
Bizliners are commercial airliners modified for a lower passenger count usage in business aviation missions. They are mainly used for government transportation including Head of state (~45% of the market), private including corporate operations (~40%), and charter operations (~15%). Since most regional and narrow-body ranges are fuel limited at lower payload, OEMs or completion centers will certify Auxiliary Fuel Tanks (ACT) installation on these jets to increase their range capability. Boeing in collaboration with General Electric launched Boeing Business Jets in 1996 followed by Airbus who entered the market in 1997 with the launch of Airbus Corporate Jets business unit. Bizliners have a large number of benefits in comparison with purpose-built business jets, notably their large cabin and baggage capability but also some drawbacks in terms of performance, mission capabilities, and versatility.
COMPLETION CENTERS A Boeing 787 at Greenpoint Technologies, a Safran Company, for interior completion
In contrast to purpose-built Business jets that are delivered ready for operations straight from aircraft OEMs. Bizliners are delivered “green” (generally) not painted with only a green primer application. The interior is literally empty and requires design and outfitting at a completion center. Completion centers often offer customized interior design, engineering, and certification of the interior outfitting and additional modifications such as airstairs, connectivity, in-flight entertainment systems, and even airborne protection systems for government and VVIP aircraft. Completion centers will also perform the interior installation and final certification. Completion centers also specialized in bizliners in-service maintenance and follow-on cabin retrofits.
INTERIOR DESIGN
A Lufthansa Technik, Middle-Eastern Inspired BBJ 777-9 VIP cabin concept London-based ALTEA offers Bizliners completion management and VVIP interior design
Bizliners offer the ultimate customization opportunity for having a jet crafted absolutely down to the last detail in accordance with customers’ needs. Interior designers will design the optimum cabin through a thorough understanding of client needs, cultural requirements, and expectations. Although most completion centers offer their internal design team, independent interior designers are often hired by customers or completion centers. These independent interior designers will not only bring their experience in aviation but also from other luxury markets such as yachts or luxury homes and or hotel designs.
COMPLETION MANAGEMENT Although the completion process may seem complex, customers can rely on completion managers who will work closely with the interior designer and completion center, to transition design intent into a cabin that is comfortable, functional, and reliable, and then oversee the entire outfitting process to ensure that client expectations, budget and quality standards are met.

CARBON OFFSETTING PROGRAMS
THE GLOSSARY OF BUSINESS AVIATION SUSTAINABILITY
CARBON FOOTPRINT ASSESSMENT A Sustainability program requires first a solid assessment of operations’ carbon footprint. To maximize integrity total gallons of fuel used each month should be privileged vs simply using aircraft flown hours
SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL (SAF) Sustainable Aviation Fuel – SAF - is any next-generation aviation fuel, made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw 35 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE materials, like used cooking oil. SAF highly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil jet fuel and can be used as a direct replacement (drop-in) for fossil jet fuel as it is chemically similar. It is fully SAF compatible with existing jet engines and fueling infrastructure, requiring zero additional investment into them. SAF has the potential to reduce net CO2 lifecycle emissions by more than 75% compared to conventional jet fuel The current issue with SAF is the limited availability and logistical challenges that can be solved through Book & Claim solutions as they effectively transfer sustainability claims to final customers.
Offsets are generated through carbon credits from projects that reduce or avoid carbon emissions, such as reforestation projects and renewable energy initiatives. Project examples include helping make the transition from fossil-based power generation to renewable sources and projects like the protection of existing forests.
AIRCRAFT EFFICIENCY Newer generation more efficient jets can bring a large contribution to reducing Carbon and Non-Carbon emissions together with the reduction in the noise footprint. Over time the improvement rate in Business Jet Engines specific fuel consumption (SFC) was roughly 1% per year.
ELCTRIFICATION & HYDROGEN Sustainable Aviation Fuels play a major role in the decarbonization of aviation, especially when it comes to long-range missions. Air Transport electrification (eg eVTOLs, eCommuter) or hydrogen will contribute at a shorter range Electrical power and propulsion systems will lead the way for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), enabling silent short and vertical take-off and landing capabilities while lowering emissions and reducing fuel consumption.

CONNECTIVITY QUICK GUIDE
36 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE
THE CONNECTIVITY ECOSYSTEM NETWORKS Business aviation connectivity relies on the availability of communication networks covering the geographic area of operation. There are two types of networks used in aviation: ▪ Satellites-based networks (SATCOM) ▪ Ground stations-based networks called Air-ToGround (ATG).
AIRCRAFT HARDWARE A large offering of cabin connectivity hardware is available in the market for either line-fit installation by the aircraft manufacturer or as a retrofit by MRO centers. The hardware can be divided into three main sub-systems, the antenna system including the radome and steering electronics, the avionics transceivers allowing for data reception and transmission to the antenna, and the cabin subsystem allowing for laptops, tablets, and smartphones to connect to the cabin network

Cabin Connectivity installation is available from either the aircraft manufacturer for installation prior to aircraft delivery (Line-fit) or from a network of sales and installation providers in the after-market (Retrofit). These installation centers develop and install aircraft connectivity hardware through Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). In opposition to the Line-fit market where the offering is very limited by the aircraft manufacturer, the retrofit market offers a large choice of solutions and should be considered even for newly delivered aircraft.
SEVICE PROVIDERS Most communication networks rely on business aviation dedicated service providers. These service providers offer tailored plans typically on a monthly subscription basis, as well as 24/7 technical support, billing, and value-added services to help manage usage and optimize bandwidth. These added-value services usually include WIFI Call and text apps, Acceleration and compression technology, Ground to Air Call service.

LIGHT MTOW < 7,000 lbs With their large mission versatility and efficiency, Light helicopters are the most popular helicopters in the civil market. The Light category is divided into two sub-categories: single and Twin-engine. The primary differences between single and twin-engine helicopters lie in their power and speed capabilities. Twinengine helicopters provide greater overall power and speed when compared to their single-engine counterparts. The engine redundancy is especially valuable when flying over water, densely populated areas, or inhospitable terrains.
INTERMEDIATE 7,000 lbs < MTOW < 10,000 lbs The Intermediate category combines light helicopter versatility with increased cabin size and range capabilities making them perfect for a large number of missions ranging from Emergency Medical Services to Search & Rescue and offshore operations.
MEDIUM & SUPER-MEDIUM 10,000 lbs < MTOW < 20,000 lbs Developed primarily to support the offshore oil and gas industry, the Medium and Super-Medium category helicopters have proven very popular in corporate transportation applications as their large and unobstructed cabins can embody the hallmarks of elegance, style, and sophistication. These helicopters can often be equipped with state-of-the-art telecommunications and entertainment systems, dedicated workspaces, and refreshment and stowage areas.
HEAVY 20,000 lbs < MTOW Designed primarily for the long-range offshore oil and gas market, Heavy helicopters are very popular on the VVIP market for government officials and heads of state transportation.
