Safaricom Marathon 2015


DATE Saturday 28th June 2015. A race briefing for all runners will be held at 18:00 hours on Friday 26th June. LOCATION Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (LWC). The journey by road from Nairobi takes 5 hours. Please ensure you leave enough time to reach Lewa in daylight. Directions to LWC by road from Nairobi can be downloaded from the marathon website. Flights to Lewa with Safarilink take 45 minutes. See the accommodation and transport sheet for information on how to book.

FUNDRAISING The primary objective of the event is to raise funds for conservation and community projects in Kenya. We are asking competitors to enter into the spirit of the event and do all they can to raise Ksh 50,000 or more per person to benefit these worthy causes. In 2014, Ksh 58,000,000 was raised and this year we hope to raise even more. The beneficiaries of the event are

projects that work towards the conservation of Kenya’s wildlife, provide education for children in rural areas, work with local communities to improve their livelihoods and provide healthcare. For more details visit www.safaricom.co.ke/safaricommarathon

ENTRY Entry is strictly limited to 1,300 runners total including the children’s race. Applications for each race will be accepted on a first come fi rst served basis. Entries will not be accepted without a completed entry form and signed disclaimer. To avoid disappointment please do not post your entry. This entry form is for Kenyan Residents Only. International Runners must apply using the International Entry Form. Visit www.tusk.org or email poppy@tusk.org for details. FULL MARATHON EVENT The full marathon is an individual event. The entry fee is Ksh 5,000 with a minimum requirement of a Ksh 10,000 donation toward the marathon’s fundraising goal (for Kenya Residents only). The race will

start at 0715 on Saturday 27th June. Entrants must be 18 years of age and over. HALF MARATHON EVENT The half marathon is a team event. There are no individual entries. A maximum of 10, minimum of 5 people can enter per team. There are no restrictions on male / female split. Teams will be accepted on a fi rst come fi rst served basis. The entry fee for the team event is Ksh 150,000 per team for Kenyan Residents Only. The race will start at 0715 on Saturday 27th June. Entrants must be 18 years of age and over. CHILDREN’S 5KM RACE There are two age categories for the Children’s 5km Race - 10 to 13 years and 14 to 17 years inclusive. The entry fee for the Children’s 5km Race is Ksh2,000 Both races will start at the same time and be run on the same route. There is a limit of 150 entries per age category. Entries are accepted on a fi rst come fi rst served basis.


CONDITIONS OF ENTRY Entrants for the full and half marathon must be 18 years of age and over. Your number will determine whether you are a full or half marathon runner. If you have a full marathon number and stop at the halfway point, your fi nishing position in the half-marathon will be recorded, but you will not qualify for a prize. Under no circumstances should a half marathon runner attempt to run the full distance. You will be stopped by course marshals and disqualified. Please note that entry includes an AMREF Maisha Bronze cover for the year. SPECTATORS Each spectator is required to fi ll out a Spectator Form and complete a Spectator Disclaimer. All spectators staying at Lewa on the marathon weekend must pay full camping fees. COURSE The course is a 21km loop run on dirt roads over an undulating route through the conservancy. The full marathon is run over two loops of the course and the half marathon over one loop. The course lies at an average altitude of 5,500 ft.

Temperaturescan range from 12-15 C° in the morning and 25-35 C° in the afternoon. MEDICAL SUPPORT AND WATER Emergency medical support will be provided by AMREF, the fl ying doctors. A helicopter is on standby to carry out emergency medical evacuations from the course. A recovery tent is situated at the fi nish and will be manned by medics from the Meridian Equator Hospital, Red Cross and the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. Basic fi rst aid is available at all water stations which are situated every 2.5km along the course. Please ensure that you bring a good supply of water for before and after the race. You are strongly advised to maintain your fl uid intake prior to, during and after the race. Isotonic drink will be available to all runners during the race. FESTIVAL IN THE PARK A ‘Festival in the Park’ will be held at the finish area after the race from 2 - 4pm.

Please note there will be no evening event. For safety reasons, people not staying in one of the designated campsites must leave Lewa after the concert. PRIZES Each runner will receive a medal and goody bag upon finishing. A trophy will be awarded to the team that raises the most money. Prizes will be awarded to the fi rst fi ve male and female runners in the full marathon as well as the top three male and female runners in the half marathon. The top three half marathon teams and top fi ve community teams will be awarded prizes. Prizes will also be awarded to the fi rst two male and female runners in the age categories: over 40, over 50, and over 60 event. Prizes will be awarded to the fi rst 10 boys and girls in the children’s 5km race for each age category. non-refundable and non-transferable if cancellation notice is received less than 30 days prior to the event. Cancellation received more than 30 days prior to the event will result in a refund of 70% of all accommodation fees. The event organisers reserve the right to change event dates, venue capacity arrangements or cancel the event and such cancellation, variation or interruption shall not entitle the participant to any claim.

AMREF An annual subscription to AMREF Maisha Bronze scheme is included automatically in your registration fee. This subscription allows up to two air evacuations within Kenya annually in case of a medical emergency. After two air evacuations have been utilized subscribers will need to renew their subscription to be eligible for any further air evacuation. This is NOT medical insurance and will only cover the cost of evacuation by air ambulance. All runners are required to have full medical insurance. There are three accommodation options for runners and spectators wishing to stay at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy over the marathon weekend SELF CATERING CAMPSITE Ksh 3,500 per person per night (children 5 - 12 years - Ksh 1,750, children under 5 - Free, no reduction for camp staff). The campsite is equipped with water points, cold showers, dustbins, fi rewood and long drop loos. Competitors and spectators wishing to use the campsite are required to bring ALL camping equipment and food for the duration of their stay. The campsite is open from Friday 26th June to Sunday 28th June. Please note this event is held in a wildlife conservancy and therefore space within the designated camping areas is restricted and we ask that all campers respect their neighbours and act with consideration. On the

evening of Friday 27th June after 10pm noise in the campsite will be restricted by camp marshalls. If you propose to use an independent safari operator you MUST inform the organisers so that space can be allocated for your camp. Please email marathon@lewa.org

SAFARICOM VILLAGE Ksh 14,900 + VAT per person per night sharing. (Children 5 - 12 years - Ksh 7,450 + VAT sharing with parents, children under 5 - Free). NB: There is a minimum of two nights stay at the Safaricom Village. There is a single supplement of Ksh 5,260. The Safaricom Village consists of Igloo or similar type tents equipped with twin camp beds and bedding with one blanket. Spotlights are placed to illuminate the paths leading to the tents. You are required to bring your own torch and towel. Communal cold showers and long drop loos are situated behind the tents. Due to limited space there is no single occupancyof tents. It can be cold at


night and in the early morning so bring warm clothing.

The Maridadi Camp is a traditional, comfortable, mobile tented camp with large walk-in tents with a verandah. They are fully equipped with twin beds, bedding, towels, side table, hurricane lantern, torch, table, wash basin, mirror and chairs. There is a hot ‘bush’ shower and short drop loos attached in the rear shared between two tents. Meals are served in a spacious semi open mess tent with dining and buffet area. Meals consist of full English breakfast, buffet lunch and three course meals in the evenings. The Pasta / Nyama Choma Party is inclusive for those staying in the Maridadi Campsite.
