Friends of Thynghowe will present the images we obtained from having a LiDAR survey done of Birklands Sherwood Forest. LiDAR is Light Detection And Ranging an optical remote sensing technology – taken by flying a plane over the area - that shows landscape features that would otherwise be undetectable because of the ground cover and the trees. These images show features that cannot easily be seen in the forest. The workshop is part of a continuing project to discover the exciting archaeology in Birklands. In the morning the session will cover the results of our LiDAR survey of the woodland, and demonstrate the techniques we will use when surveying any features identified by LiDAR. We will also utilise feedback from the research into documents in archives. Drinks will be provided during the morning session, bring a packed lunch or food is available at the Sherwood Pines Café. After a lunch break there will be a practical session (bring boots and warm clothing) when we will record an archaeological feature in preparation for ground truthing in the Forest during Autumn and Winter. Booking is essential so get in contact and get your place. When you book all details of the venue and parking will be sent to you. Looking forward to meeting you!
