Letter from the Editor

It’s a bittersweet time for seniors as we get ready to graduate and move onto the next chapter of our lives. In this issue, we look to celebrate the four years we have had here, and look toward the future. It has been my honor to work for this publication all four years of high school, and I am excited to present my final Pirate Press issue of my career. Thanks for the memories! Ross Reynolds, Editor-in-Chief

Letters From The Staff Compiled by Sarah Ponder Pattonville principals and teachers share their advice and good wishes to the Class of 2017 seniors:

Mrs. Odetta Smith

Dear Class of 2017, High school is a unique time in one’s life. We are often shaped by the unique joys and sorrows that come from high school. But it’s not the end. In fact, it’s the beginning of new adventures and challenges. It’s the beginning of discovering who you really are APART from friends. It’s the beginning of YOU. So where ever your road leads you in the days, months, and years ahead, remember to find your PLACE and SPACE in this world. Good luck and many blessings to you, Class of 2017!

Mr. Robert Thompson

Congratulations to all graduates of the Class of 2017 for all of their accomplishments. This senior class has demonstrated success in many ways and should take the next steps in the journey of life with confidence and pride. It has been our pleasure to see you grow as students and responsible citizens of the Pattonville community. I offer these simple reminders as you journey into the unknown that life offers to each of us. 1. Show gratitude. Saying thanks to those who have helped you costs nothing but means everything to those that hear it. 2. Surround yourself with the right people. They will be the voices you hear when you reach for help when making important decisions. 3. Challenge yourself. How you respond to challenging situations reveals a lot about your attitude and perception, it lets you know you’re ready for whatever comes next. 4. Enjoy life. Time only flies by faster as you grow older, be sure your memories come with a smile. On behalf of the entire Pattonville School District, we hope you continue to thrive and enjoy your bright futures. Be the best person you can be, and set forth for greatness!

Mrs. Cara Hiripitiyage

Class of 2017, As you are about to embark on your next steps in life, remember the lessons you learned at PHS: Be respectful to others, to commitments, to resources, but mostly to yourself. Be responsible for your choices and behavior and for the mark you leave in the world. Be involved, life isn’t something to watch from afar; take on challenges and opportunities and go after what you seek. I look forward to seeing all the good you will put into the world! Best wishes, seniors!

Mrs. Amy Adam

Mrs. Beth Moritz

Dear Seniors in the Class of 2017, You have arrived! You may have entered this building a scrawny freshman, confident that you knew everything about everything and everyone. I hope you are leaving with a different type of confidence- one that makes you know you will be ready for whatever you are about to face- but also with a big dose of uncertainty. The older I get, the less certain I become about so many facets of the world. That is what young adulthood is about: meeting a wide variety of people who will challenge what you thought you knew and also finding those people who will support you no matter what you may be working through at the moment. If there is anything that I have learned in my nineteen years at PHS, it is that no matter the myriad of obstacles our Pattonville students are facing, you CAN and DO persevere. You have been surrounded in diversity, have been challenged academically, have faced personal losses, yet you have endured as individuals and as a community. That ability to rebound when life inevitably hurls something at you for which you could not possibly have planned is essential to success and fulfillment in life. Good luck as you pursue this next challenge. Embrace it! Hang on to the best of what you have learned here, and let go of the baggage weighing upon you. You get to reinvent yourself now. Make us proud!

Dear Class of 2017, Congratulations on all that you’ve accomplished- I’m proud of you! Your class is filled with talent: musicians and mathematicians, athletes and artists, programmers and performers- you’ve got it all. I hope you spend the next few years finding your passion and making the world a better place, and don’t forget to have lots of fun along the way. Love and luck, wherever your future takes you!

LAST DANCE Senior girls hold up signs showing their college destinations when taking prom pictures at Forest Park. “It was really exciting to see people going all around the country” Molly Sullivan said. “I was really happy, but also really sad.”

Compiled by Nadia Maddex

ROYAL TREATMENT “I was extremely surprised when Mr. Grimshaw announced my name as prom king,” senior Isaiah Davis said. “The song ‘Moment 4 Life’ by Nicki Minaj started playing in my head because something like that only happens once in a lifetime and I am so happy it happened to me.”

THE FIRST EVER “I wanted to be different,” senior Ashli Bruton said. “Most girls wear dresses to prom. No girl has ever worn a body suit to prom in Pattonville history, and you can quote me on that.”

TIME OF MY LIFE “Prom was definitely one of my favorite nights of senior year,” senior Roma Patel said. “It was so much fun being on prom court and being able to dance the night away with my friends.”

SUIT UP Some of the members of the varsity boys’ volleyball team took a picture at prom. All of them wore bow ties except senior Michael Aguirre who is in the middle of the group. “Ten out of 10 times, if you are wearing a tie over a bow tie, you are better looking” Aguirre said.
