Of course outside of the excitement surrounding this year's batch of smokes, the hottest discussion topic at IPCPR was the growing legislation that threatens our hobby and livelihood. There were concerns over FDA regulations that seek to limit the creativity of the blenders. There are concerns about whether or not mail order companies like ours will even be able to continue to offer you the vast variety of smokes for your enjoyment. While many people worry, I don't. There are too many smart, talented, passionate, and driven people to allow anything like that to happen. People like Marvin Samuel, Jeff Borysiewicz, our owner Scotty, and hundreds of other folks are sacrificing their time, energy, financial resources, and even their own businesses to ensure we can continue to exist and thrive. We will fight tooth and nail to ensure the future of premium tobacco products. We are too many, too strong, and too dedicated. Our cause is just, our intentions pure, and I have no doubt that we will emerge victorious. We are in a golden age, with resources and creativity unmatched at any point in the history of this business. I am honored to be a small part of this wonderful culture, and I am proud to share it with all of you. I can't wait to see what the future holds for us, and it is truly our pleasure to have all of you along for what is sure to be an exhilarating ride.

For us, this moment occurs on Friday afternoon, when the work week is done and we can crack open a fine craft brew, fire up a premium cigar, and start the weekend off by relaxing. Each week we pick out a new pairing, and we review the cigar, the beer, and the pairing combination to give you some tips on smokes, brews, and combos you might enjoy. This concept is so much fun that the blog couldn’t contain it, so we bring to you the first in-print edition of Pint Friday!

This week we are sampling a beer and a cigar that haven’t really hit the mainstream yet, but really should. Having spent many years living in Kingston, NY, I am quite familiar with the outstanding Keegan Ales brewery, and their Joe Mama’s Milk has always been a favorite of mine, especially during the fall and winter months. Of course with a rich, dark, and creamy stout beer we needed just the right cigar to pair it with. The Hammer & Sickle Moscow City was an obvious choice, the lush CT Broadleaf Maduro wrapper is the cigar equivalent to a stout beer, and also is a personal favorite of mine. I fired up the Moscow City, it lit up easily and instantly delivered the deep, rich flavors I’ve come to expect from this blend. Smooth, thick smoke with copious amounts of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, and cream overtakes my palate, and it’s time to crack open my Joe Mama’s Milk. As one might imagine, the coffee infused milk stout is a fantastic match. The brew is thick, rich with flavors, and all around delicious. One of my favorite aspects is the excellent balance, I often find microbrews to be either watery or overly alcoholtasting. This one doesn’t even get close to either, all the elements are in order, and the care put into making it is obvious. Despite

tasting like a beer milkshake, this one manages to not be too sweet, going down nice and easy while tantalizing my tongue with its creamy flavor concoction. As I kept smoking the Moscow City it got even better, with the flavors continuing to evolve and entertain my palate. The Maduro wrapper is absolutely gorgeous, and it adds such depth to the blend. The easy draw and the smooth, creamy smoke make this one perfect for our purposes of achieving ultimate relaxation. Underneath the overlying chocolate and coffee tones, there is rich earth, leather, and dark woody notes that come and go throughout, adding complexity and keeping the smoker enthralled. If you can’t tell, I really like this cigar and plan to revisit this pair again, probably repeatedly, on my own time without telling you all about it. If you enjoy stouts and can get your hands on Keegan’s Joe Mama’s Milk, do yourself a favor and give this pair a shot this fall. to humidor seasoning to those of you who have a few questions. It’s a pretty simple process, but it is important to do and if done properly will result in you getting the most from your cigars. Let’s get started! First, you will need either humidor activation solution (a 50/50 mix of distilled water and propylene glycol) or distilled water, and a soft, lint-free cloth. We recommend using the solution for the first seasoning of the humidor, and again in the spring and fall, when the temperatures change. The solution will help stabilize the humidity level as it seeks your preferred humidity level. You can also use distilled water instead, but you should monitor the box closely for the first week or so to make sure it stabilizes. Start by moistening the cloth, and wipe down all exposed cedar surfaces on the inside of the humidor, including all trays and dividers. Close the lid and wait an hour or so and repeat. If you have the time, a third wipe will help even more. Next, fill a shot glass or a small bowl with distilled water and place it inside the humidor. A properly stored cigar will provide the smoking experience we’re all looking for, and keep issues like uneven burns, poor draws, and dryness to a minimum. When you’ve purchased a new humidor to store your collection, the most important first step towards ensuring it stores your cigars well is to season it. The seasoning process allows the Spanish cedar lining of the humidor to absorb moisture and saturate itself. This is done so that when you’re storing your stogies in it and pumping in more moisture with your humidification device that the moisture isn’t sucked up by the humidor lining and is directed to your cigars as it should be. Many of you aficionados already know how to do this, but since it’s one of the most common questions we are asked here at P&C we wanted to offer this guide

African Teak the hygrometer. If the shot glass or bowl is empty, refill it. If distilled water remains, leave it alone. Leave the box to sit closed for another night. The next day, check the humidor. If the inner lining wood is not damp to the touch, and your hygrometer is reading between 60 and 70%, your humidor is ready for use. Remove the shot glass or bowl and place your cigars inside the humidor (of course keeping at least one out to smoke in celebration). If the wood is still damp, remove the shot glass/bowl and let the humidor sit empty for another night. If the hygrometer still reads below 50%, leave the shot glass/bowl in the closed humidor without cigars for another night. Repeat this process until the lining of your humidor is dry to the touch and the hygrometer is consistently reading between 60 and 70%.
