breves El equipo de fútbol de South High avanza al torneo del estado El equipo de fútbol de South avanzó al Torneo de Fútbol del estado de Nebraska con una victoria 4-1 el 5 de mayo frente a Millard South para reivindicarse como los ganadores del campeonato del Distrito A-5. as celebraciones del 5 de Mayo 2011 en Omaha organizadas por la South Omaha Business Association (SOBA) y presentadas por el First National Bank, dieron inicio el miércoles 4 con un banquete convocado por la Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands (MAHSM), en honor al Dr. Jim Ramírez, en el cual también se llevó acabo la gran final del concurso Miss Latina Omaha Scholarship Pageant donde resultó ganadora la joven Yesenia Madera. Los festejos continuaron el jueves 5 en las nuevas instalaciones de la calle Farnam del Consulado de México en Omaha, con una recepción encabezada por el cónsul mexicano, Jorge Ernesto Espejel, acompañado de otros patrocinadores. Esa misma noche, el DJ Brent Crampton ofreció una de sus famosas Loom Waves en el restaurante España donde se dieron cita los jóvenes integrantes del Mariachi Patria Juvenil para abrir la noche de música electrónica con ritmos latinos en el negocio del empresario venezolano, Carlos Méndez, con Jay Kline como anfitrión. Al día siguiente, el viernes 6 de mayo, Metro Community College en su Campus Sur, se vistió de fiesta organizando un estupendo almuerzo con el orador invitado, Carlos Ojeda Jr. Cabe mencionar que los premios para el primero, segundo y tercer lugar del certamen Miss Latina Omaha Scholarship Pageant, fueron precisamente becas para estudiar en ésa importante institución.

Luego, por la noche, la comunidad de Omaha vivió algo sin precedentes, la congregación de sus habitantes en la Plaza de la Raza (ubicada en las calles 25 y ‘L’) para disfrutar del concierto gratuito del grupo mexicano Control, los llamados “Reyes de la Cumbia”, quienes mantuvieron a miles de pie, bailando y coreando sus pegajosos temas como La Camisa Negra, Viva el Amor y Cumbia con el Sol. “¡Nunca antes se había visto tanta gente disfrutando del programa, antes del día del desfile!. Considero que asistieron, ¡más de 3.000 personas!”, dijo Marcos Mora, encargado del programa y logística del evento. Y ése número de asistentes se multiplicó el sábado 7, cuando la comunidad no sólo de Omaha sino de sus alrededores, se agrupó a lo largo de la calle 24, desde las calles B y hasta la ‘O’, para admirar el desfile que duró más de dos horas, el cual abrió con la presentación de los 5 Grandes Mariscales del año, el Dr. Ramírez (a quien ya mencionamos arriba), acompañado de Rosemary Salcedo, Sue Aguilera, Bárbara Velázquez y Susan Mayberger, a quienes les fue merecidamente reconocida su amplia trayectoria en el campo de la educación y la cultura. En dicho espectáculo transmitido por la empresa de cable, Cox uno de los auspiciadores principales del festejo, no pudo faltar la presencia del Alcalde de Omaha, Jim Suttle, acompañado del encargado de los asuntos para la comunidad latina, Roger García. Entre escuelas, iglesias, empresas y organizaciones no lucrativas, los participantes que resaltaron por el colorido de su carro alegórico al más puro estilo mexicano, fueron el restaurante Guaca Maya, con música de banda en vivo y bailables interpretados por el Ballet Folklórico Xiotal del Director Artístico Héctor Moreno.

La fiesta continuó entre los juegos mecánicos, los puestos de bebidas y antojitos y sobre todo, el entretenimiento a cargo del Marichi Luna y Sol, Son del Llano y Tremendos Musical entre otros. La diversión siguió el domingo 8, iniciando con una caminata en estadio Collin de la escuela South High, una misa al aire libre, y por supuesto, más música, sin faltar la lucha libre promovida por Tony Vega. “Los mexicanos y latinos en general tienen sed de hacer cosas juntos, y ésta es la oportunidad perfecta para reunirse como cultura en una sociedad que muchas veces los reprime duramente - explicó José García Director Ejecutivo de MAHSM-, sin embargo, si ves a esta multitud no notas ningún resentimiento, al contrario, están felices de poder expresarse porque quieren ser parte de ésta nación y compartir su riqueza cultural”. Por su parte, el señor Abelardo Hernández compartió que lo que más le agrada del 5 de Mayo, “es la parte cultural, no la parte de hacer negocio, sino la de educar a la gente sobre lo que es la cultura mexicana”. A su vez, David Catalán, Presidente de SOBA, concluyó: “SOBA inició operaciones en 1922, primero como la South Omaha Merchants Association, con la misión de preservar la diversidad, herencia y vitalidad económica de los negociantes. Entre nuestras tareas estamos a cargo de ésta celebración que este año vivió su Vigésimo Sexto Aniversario, cumpliendo su cometido de mostrar las tradiciones mexicanas y transformarlas en una experiencia para la comunidad americana. El festejo del 5 de Mayo es un fenómeno muy curioso, adoptado y celebrado en todo el país, y en Omaha ha sido tan buena la respuesta que seguramente ¡el próximo año tendremos que pensar en expandirnos!”.
Un juez de la corte del distrito del condado de Douglas dictaminó que Dave Nabity y la Alianza de Omaha para el Sector Privado deben revelar la fuente utilizada para las acusaciones hechas contra el presidente del sindicato de bomberos de Omaha Steve LeClair en un programa de radio el pasado otoño. El 29 de octubre del año pasado Nabity, el presidente de OAPS y uno de los críticos más fuertes de la policía de la ciudad y los contratos de los bomberos, acusó a LeClair de “robo por engaño”, diciendo que el presidente del sindicato estaba siendo retribuido con fondos públicos por un trabajo que él no estaba desempañando. LeClair presentó una demanda por difamación a principios de noviembre alegando que dichos comentarios habían dañado su reputación y le habían causado angustia emocional. Nabity solicitó protección bajo el Acta de Libre Circulación de Información, también conocida como la Ley de Protección, la cual protege a los periodistas de revelar fuentes anónimas. Pero el juez del distrito James Gleason dictaminó que “el objetivo principal de la investigación de Nabity y sus declaraciones no fue el de informar a los discursos públicos, sino un intento de promover sus propios puntos de vista políticos y ambiciones”. Gleason le dio a Nabity dos semanas para revelar la fuente detrás de las acusaciones. Un hombre armado con una espada, recibió un tiro el Sur de Omaha Jonathan Martis, de 38 años, sobrevivió después de haber recibido un disparo por parte de un policía de Omaha cerca de su casa en la 3312 X St. el 5 de mayo. El oficial Michael Pecha informó que Martis llamó al 911 para reportar un altercado a eso de las 6 p.m. Cuando los agentes llegaron el sospechoso portaba una espada y al negarse a entregarla la policía trató de desarmarlo con un taser. Cuando esto no logró detenerlo un oficial le disparó en el torso. La investigación está en curso.

Thousands celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Omaha Successful organization breaks audience records [by Marina Rosado]
T
he 2011 Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Omaha organized by the South Omaha Business Association (SOBA) and presented by First National Bank, began on Wednesday, May 4, with a banquet organized by the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands (MAHSM). The banquet honored Dr. Jim Ramirez, and there was also the grand finale of the Miss Latina Omaha Scholarship Pageant that resulted in the young Yesenia Madera as the winner. The festivities continued on Thursday, May 5, in the new facilities on Farnam Street of the Mexican Consulate in Omaha, with a reception head by the Mexican Consul, Jorge Ernesto Espejel, accompanied by other sponsors. On the same night, DJ Brent Crampton offered one of his famous Loom dance parties in the restaurant España, where the young members of the Maricahi Patria Juvenil gathered to open the night of electronic music with Latin rhythms in the business of the Venezuelan

On the following day, May 6, at Metro Community College’s South Omaha campus, a party organized a stupendous lunch with the invited speaker, Carlos Ojeda Jr. It’s worth mentioning that the prizes for the first, second and third place awards of the Miss Latino Omaha Scholarship Pageant were scholarships for the winners to study at this institution. Then at night, the Omaha community lived something without precedent, as a congregation of people gathered in the Plaza de la Raza (located at 25th and L Street,) to enjoy a free concert by the Mexican band, Grupo Control, called the “Kings of Cumbia,” who moved thousands to their feet — dancing to their catchy songs “La Camisa Negra,” “Viva el Amor” and “Cumbia con el Sol.” “Never before have there been so many people enjoying the program, the day before the parade.” I think that more than 3,000 people attended,” said Marcos Mora, who was in charge of programming and logistics for the event. And that number of attendees multiplied on Saturday, May 7, when the community gathered on the length of 24th street, from B Street to O Street, to admire the parade that lasted two hours. It opened with the presentation of the five Grand

Marshalls for the event, Dr. Ramirez (who was mentioned earlier), Rosemary Salcedo, Sue Aguilera, Barbara Velazques and Susan Mayberger, who was recognized for her many achievements in education and culture. The event was televised by Cox Cable Company, one of the main sponsors of the event, and included the Mayor of Omaha, Jim Suttle, and Roger Garcia, in charge of Latina Community issues. Among the schools, churches, business and nonprofit ogranizations, the participants that were highlighted in colorful floats in pure Mexican style, was the restaurant Guaca Maya, with the music of a live band, and dances interpreted by the Xiotal Ballet Folklorico by Artistic Director Hector Moreno. The party continued with mechanical games, food and drink stands, and above all, entertainment by the Marichi Luna y Sol, Son del Llano and Tremendos Musical among others. The fun continued on Sunday, May 8, starting with a walk in Collins Stadium at South High School, an outdoor mass, and of course, music — and not without lucha libre promoted by Tony Vega. “Mexican and Latinos in general have a thirst do things together and this is the perfect
opportunity to come together as a culture in a society that many times harshly suppresses,” says Jose Garcia, Executive Director of MAHSM. “Nevertheless, if you see this crowd you don’t see any resentment. On the contrary, they are happy to be able to express themselves because they want to be a part of this nation and share their cultural riches.” For his part, Abelardo Hernandez shared what most made him happy about Cinco de Mayo. “It is the cultural part, not the part about doing business, but instead educating people about what Mexican culture is.” In turn, David Catalan, President of SOBA, concluded, “SOBA started operations in 1922, first as the South Omaha Merchants Association, with the mission of preserving diversity, heritage and economic vitality of the business owners. One of our tasks is to be in charge of this celebration that this year was the 26th Anniversary meeting, completing its commitment to showing the Mexican traditions and transform it into an experience for the American community. The Cinco de Mayo festival is a very curious phenomenon, adopted and celebrated by the whole country, and in Omaha, has been a good response and surely next year we will have to think about expanding.”

El trabajo de toda una vida El Dr. Jim Ramírez fue honrado en el banquete de MAHSM [por Brandon Vogel]
A
lgún día un historiador utilizará decenas de miles de palabras para documentar la vida del Dr. Jim Ramírez como un educador, mentor, amigo y vecino en el Sur de Omaha. Pero si aquel historiador sólo pudiera elegir una palabra “trabajó” sería la mejor. Jim Ramírez trabajó sin descanso para superarse así mismo y luego lo hizo para proporcionarle a los jóvenes latinos oportunidades que nunca creyeron que fueran posibles. Y 59 años después de haberse graduado de la escuela South High, Ramírez sigue trabajando. A juzgar por las más de 100 personas que asistieron al restaurante La Mesa en Bellevue para honrar a Ramírez en el primer banquete anual del Cinco de Mayo de la Mexican American Historical Society of the Midland’s, demuestra que su labor nunca será olvidada. “Rara vez se nos ha colocado en una posición en donde podamos ser los administradores de nuestra propia historia”, José Francisco García dijo, el director ejecutivo de MAHSM. “Fue evidente para nosotros que el Dr. Jim Ramírez ha creado una vida digna de historia, digna de cualquier libro de historia que se pudiera escribir acerca de los mexicano-americanos en Omaha, Nebraska”.

Si Ramírez, de 75 años y actual administrador de las Escuelas Públicas de Omaha, tenía algún interés en retirarse en el banquete titulado “Celebrando la Excelencia en la Educación”, ésta habría sido una buena manera de hacerlo. Como parte del evento se presentó una serie de fotos de la colección de MAHSM sobre Lano Opreza detallando el baloncesto mexicano-estadounidense a mediados de siglo, un deporte que le gusta a Ramírez. Luego tuvo lugar la segunda edición del concurso Miss Latina Omaha Scholarship Pageant, el cual celebró no sólo la juventud sino también la educación. En el concurso de este año, MAHSM se centró principalmente en el rendimiento académico de las 19 candidatas y sus aspiraciones universitarias. Yesenia Madera, una estudiante de último año de la escuela Bryan High, fue la ganadora del primer lugar y recibió una beca por todo un año de Metro Community College. La ganadora del segundo lugar Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez, también de la escuela Bryan High y la del tercer lugar Doraceli Aguirre una estudiante de primer año de MCC, cada una recibió un cuarto de beca para MCC. Tal vez el mejor testimonio de la influencia que Ramírez ha tenido en Omaha, fue el de la generación de estudiantes y colegas que ahora han crecido hasta convertirse en líderes de la comunidad bajo su dirección. Más de 20 personas hicieron fila frente a una bandera mexicana para compartir las historias de cómo Ramírez influyó en sus vidas. Sue Aguilera-Robles y Barbara Velazquez, sus colegas educadoras y Mariscales en el desfile del Cinco de Mayo de este año, hablaron

de su trabajo junto a Ramírez. Dan Gomez recordó como Ramírez lo impulsó para que obtuviera una beca bancaria, a pesar de que él era un estudiante de finanzas de la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha. Gomez es ahora el presidente de UMB Bank. Ricardo Ariza, el director de Asuntos Multiculturales de la Universidad de Creighton, dijo que su vida cambió cuando Ramírez lo visitó en su casa y le hizo ver la posibilidad de una carrera universitaria mientras que trabajaba en las empacadoras de carne. Ruben Cano, el director de la escuela Intermedia Norris, recordó que Ramírez lo trajo a Omaha desde su casa en New Mexico con la promesa de no era una ciudad fria. Los testimonios, llenos de muchas risas y algunas lágrimas, continuaron durante casi una hora y Ramírez saludo a cada uno de ellos con un abrazo. Después de una presentación de los premios por parte del presidente de MAHSM Abelardo Hernandez, el hombre homenajeado finalmente tuvo la oportunidad de hablar y concluyó diciendo “Cada vez que uno toca la vida de un joven, ellos se lo devuelven a usted” y agregó “Eso es lo que me da la fuerza para seguir adelante”. Si bien el evento del 4 de mayo habría servido como una despedida, Ramírez no tiene planes de retirarse. “Cuando uno se divierte como yo lo he hecho en los últimos 50 años, usted no cuenta las horas, días o años”, él dijo. “Nunca he podido recordar el número de días que faltan para que se termine el semestre en cualquier lugar, ya sea cuando estaba en la universidad o en OPS. “Mientras que haya combustible en el tanque, voy a seguir adelante”.

The Work of a Lifetime
Dr. Jim Ramirez honored at MAHSM banquet [by Brandon Vogel]
D
r. Jim Ramirez worked. A historian could, and someday one likely will, use tens of thousands of words to record his life as an educator, mentor, friend and neighbor in South Omaha. But if you only had one word to choose, “worked” works best. Jim Ramirez worked relentlessly to improve himself and then he worked even harder to push and provide young Latinos with opportunities they never thought possible. And 59 years after he graduated from South High School, Ramirez is still working. Judging from the more than 100 people who showed up at La Mesa Restaurant in Bellevue to honor Ramirez at the Mexican American Historical Society of the Midlands’ first annual Cinco de Mayo Banquet on May 4 that work will never be forgotten. “We rarely have been put in a position to be stewards of our own history,” said Jose Francisco Garcia, MAHSM executive director. “It was apparent to us that Dr. Jim Ramirez has created a lifetime worthy of history, worthy of any history book that could be written about the Mexican-American in Omaha, Nebraska.” If the 75-year-old Ramirez, currently an administrator with Omaha Public Schools, had any interest in retiring, the “Excellence in Education” banquet would have served as a fitting coda. There was a series of photos from MAHSM’s Lano Opreza Collection detailing Mexican-American basketball in the mid-century, a sport Ramirez loved. Then there was the second annual Miss Latino Omaha Scholarship pageant celebrating not just the youth but also education and serving as a sort of primer on the Ramirez ethos. For this year’s pageant, MAHSM focused primarily on the 19 candidates’ academic performance and college aspirations. Yesenia Madera, a senior at Bryan High School, was announced as the first place winner and received a full-year scholarship to Metro Community College. Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez, also of Bryan High, and Doraceli Aguirre, a freshman at MCC, each received a quarter-scholarship to MCC as the second- and third-place winners. Perhaps the best testament to the influence Ramirez has had on Omaha, however, was the generation of students and colleagues who have now grown into community leaders under his guidance. to share their stories of how Ramirez shaped their lives. Sue Aguilera-Robles and Barbara Velazquez, fellow educators and Grand Marshals in this year’s Cinco de Mayo parade, told of a career spent working alongside Ramirez. Dan Gomez recalled Ramirez gently pushing him into a banking scholarship, despite the fact that he was a finance major, while he was a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Gomez is now the president and CEO of UMB Bank. Ricardo Ariza, Creighton University’s Director of Multicultural Affairs, said he was headed for a career in the packing houses before Ramirez visited his house a made a college

education seem possible. Ruben Cano, the principal at Norris Middle School, recalled that Ramirez brought him to Omaha from his home in New Mexico by promising that it wouldn’t be cold. The testimonials, filled with a lot of laughs and a few tears, continued for nearly an hour with Ramirez greeting each speaker with a hug. After an awards presentation from MAHSM president Abelardo Hernandez, the man of honor finally got his chance to speak. A standing ovation greeted him and then Ramirez, speaking softly, detailed the basis for a career that’s touched thousands with a single sentence.
“Every time you touch a young life, they give back to you,” he said. “That’s what gives me the strength to go on.” While the proceedings on May 4 would have served as a fitting farewell, Ramirez has no plan to slow down. He works. “When you’re having as much fun as I have had for the past 50 years you don’t count the hours, days or years,” he says. “I’ve never remembered the number of days left in the semester anywhere, whether I was at the university or at OPS. “As long as there is still fuel in the tank, I’ll keep going.”

10 años radica en Estados Unidos: “En mi familia ya había experiencia con negocios, pero la verdad, ¡yo nunca me imaginé llegar a tener el mío propio!. Esto ha sido una bendición. Abrimos en diciembre de 2009 y hemos estado trabajando muy duro para
poder seguir creciendo, sobre todo, porque sabemos que existe competencia y hay que dar lo mejor”. La joven colombiana comentó que ella y su esposo Christian tienen muchos y muy buenos proyectos a futuro, pero prefirió
guardarse los detalles para así darle una grata sorpresa a la comunidad que ha puesto su establecimiento en alto, como una de las tiendas consentidas, “no sólo de los hispanos, pues ya también llegan a comprar aquí los americanos, ya que muchos de ellos están casados con latinas”. Los productos que se venden en El Caribe, llegan a Omaha, desde sus países de origen vía Nueva York o Miami, según señaló Pérez: “Es muy rico ver como en un sólo lugar se pueden encontrar muchas cosas de diferentes culturas y cómo cada una de ellas va añadiendo a sus compras, algo de la otra cultura y se va diversificando”. ¿Y qué es lo que no puede faltar en El Caribe?: “¡Pues las arepas y el chorizo colombiano!. Y algo que se nos vende muy bien es obviamente, el café colombiano que tiene excelente calidad”. l ritmo de la contagiosa cumbia colombiana, la comunidad hispana hace sus compras en la tienda de abarrotes El Caribe, un singular establecimiento ubicado sobre la calle ‘L’, en la ciudad de Omaha. “Somos muchos hispanos los que nos encontramos en ésta ciudad – explicó Sandra Pérez, la dueña del negocio -, pero para nosotros el empezar fue un poco difícil porque no abrimos la tienda en el Sur de Omaha, sino en esta zona que no es tan frecuentada por hispanos. Sin embargo, ¡gracias a Dios nos ha ido muy bien!”. Y mientras hacemos un recorrido visual por todo lo que El Caribe nos ofrece, desde las tarjetas teléfonicas y los envíos de dinero, ¡hasta la más completa variedad de productos comestibles de México, Centro y Sudamérica!. “Tenemos muy buena selección – expresó Pérez -, porque es la misma clientela quien nos va pidiendo que es lo que le gustaría que trajéramos para vender. T
o the contagious rhythm of the Colombian cumbia, the Hispanic community does its shopping at the grocery story El Caribe, a unique establishment located on L Street in el caribe the city of Omaha. “There are a lot of Hispanics who have found us in this city,” explained Sandra Perez, the owner of the business, “but for us starting it was a little difficult because we did not open the store in South Omaha, but instead in an area not frequented by Hispanics. Nevertheless, thanks to God we have done well.” El Caribe offers phone cards and money wires, plus the most complete variety of food products from Mexico, Central America and South America. “We have a very good selection,” said Perez, “because what we sell is what the customers would ask for us to sell. Here they can find typical products from to Peru to the Dominican Republic, and of course, mainly from Colombia.” Perez was born and grew up in the city of Medellin, in beautiful Colombia, but for the last 10 years has lived in the United States. “There is a lot of business experience in my family, but to tell you the truth, I never imagined that I would have my own business. This has been a blessing. We opened in December of 2009 and we have been working very hard in order to continue growing, because we know there is competition and we have to give our best.”
The young Colombian said that she and her husband Christian have many good projects for the future, but that she prefers to keep the details for later to give a greater surprise to the community that will put her establishment on top, “not only for Hispanic but Americans who also come here to shop, now that many of them are married to Latinas.” The products sold at El Caribe arrive in Omaha from their countries of origin through New York or Miami, according to
South High soccer advances to state The fourth-ranked Omaha South boys soccer team advanced to the Nebraska State Soccer Tournament with a 4-1 victory May 5 over Millard South to claim the District A-5 championship. Judge rules in favor of fire union in defamation suit A Douglas County District Court judge ruled that Dave Nabity and the Omaha Alliance for the Private Sector must reveal the source of accusations made against Omaha fire union president Steve LeClair on a radio program last fall. On Oct. 29 of last year Nabity, president of the OAPS and one of the most outspoken critics of the city’s police and fire contracts, accused LeClair of “theft by deception” saying the union president was being paid from public funds for work he wasn’t doing. LeClair filed a defamation lawsuit in early November claiming the comments had damaged his reputation and caused him emotional distress. Nabity sought protection under the Free Flow of Information Act, also known as the Shield Law, which protects journalists from revealing anonymous sources. But District Judge James Gleason ruled that “the primary purpose of Nabity’s research and statements was not informing the public discourse, but instead an attempt to further his own political views and ambitions.” Gleason gave Nabity two weeks to reveal the source behind the allegations. Man with sword shot in South Omaha Jonathan Martis, 38, survived after being shot by an Omaha police officer near his home at 3312 X St. on May 5. Officer Michael Pecha reported that Martis called 911 to report a disturbance at around 6 p.m. When officers arrived, the suspect was holding a sword and refused to drop the weapon. As Martis advanced on the officers, Omaha police first deployed a taser. When that failed to stop the suspect an officer shot him in the torso. The investigation is ongoing.

Capacitando a los padres [por Leo Adam Biga]
C
uando Nidal, el hijo de Graciela y Ayman Sharif, nació con Síndrome de Down la pareja no sabía cómo actuar al tener un niño con necesidades especiales. Graciela, oriunda del Perú, ahora reconoce que ella y Ayman pasaron por un ciclo de culpa, tristeza, ira y ella dijo “la pérdida de los sueños”. Ella no sabía que era el comienzo de su travesía como una defensora de las necesidades especiales. Hoy en día, como coordinador del enlace de Parent Training and Information (PTI) Nebraska, ella ayuda a los padres a encontrar su camino. “Al principio uno se siente como si estuviera navegando por un país extranjero en una lengua extranjera”, ella dijo. Graciela recuerda la primera vez que ella y Ayman se reunieron con una trabajadora social, estaban ávidos de respuestas y esperaban encontrar una cura. “Los padres de familia están desesperados por encontrar información”, Sharif dijo. “Pero ella nos mostró los recursos, y desde ese momento me di cuenta que teníamos que aprender este nuevo lenguaje. Seguimos leyendo libros, navegando por Internet, haciendo preguntas y visitando a otros padres”. Cuando todavía era una ama de casa, ella ayudó a crear un grupo de apoyo para los padres de niños con Síndrome de Down. “El compartir las experiencias fue la mejor forma de superar muchos de nuestros obstáculos y nos ayudó a sentirnos mejor”, Sharif dijo. Ella más adelante se educó así misma a través de un taller ofrecido por PTI. Obligando a un distrito escolar a que aceptara a su hijo en la escuela de su vecindario, haciendo usos de las leyes de protección para las personas con necesidades especiales. A pesar de que ella y Ayman, un nativo del Medio Oriente, hablan muy bien inglés – ellos se conocieron cuando eran estudiantes internacionales en la Universidad de Nebraska en Omaha - ella dijo que los padres con un mínimo de conocimientos del inglés se enfrentan a más obstáculos. “Esta es la razón por la que me uní al personal de PTI”, ella dijo. “Ellos necesitaban a alguien bilingüe - que hablaba español e Inglés, y que fuera el padre de un niño con una discapacidad y que tuviera un título universitario. Yo reuní los tres requisitos”.

Ella es miembro de la junta directiva de Nebraska Advocacy Services y Munroe Meyer Institute’s Consumer Advisory. “Siempre trato de hablar en nombre de las familias que hablan español. Yo soy su voz”. Su trabajo la hizo merecedora del premio a la Salud y Servicios Humanos de la Heartland Latino Leadership Conference 2010. “Fue un honor”, ella dijo acerca del reconocimiento. “Eso me demostró que estoy haciendo un buen trabajo y que debo continuar haciéndolo. Sé la importancia de apoyar a mi comunidad”. Ella comentó que un estigma cultural hace que algunos hispanos se resistan a revelar que tienen un niño con necesidades especiales o eviten hablar de la situación. hen Graciela and Ayman Sharif ’s son Nidal was born with Down Syndrome the couple didn’t know how to respond to having a special needs child. Graciela, a native of Peru, now recognizes she and Ayman went through a cycle of guilt, sadness, anger and, she says, “the loss of dreams.” Little did she know it was the start of her journey as a special needs advocate. Today, as outreach coordinator for Parent Training and Information (PTI) Nebraska, she helps parents find their way. “At first you feel like you’re navigating a foreign land in a foreign language,” she says. She recalls the first time she and Ayman met with a caseworker; they were so hungry for answers and hope they half-way expected a cure. “This is how desperate parents are for information,” says Sharif. “But she guided us to resources, and from that point I realized we’re going to have to learn this new language. We kept reading books and navigating the Internet and asking questions and visiting other parents.” While still a stay-at-home-mom she helped create a support group for parents of Down Syndrome children. “Sharing experiences is the best way to overcome many of our obstacles and to feel better,” says Sharif. She further educated herself at a PTI workshop. Armed with special needs protection laws, she forced a school district to accept her son at his neighborhood school. While she and Ayman, a Middle Eastern native, are fluent in English - they met as international students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha - she says parents with minimal English language skills face more obstacles.
“This is why I joined the PTI staff,” she says. “They needed somebody bilingual who spoke Spanish and English, and who was the parent of a child with a disability and had a college degree. I filled all three requirements.” She likes the fact PTI services are free. She serves on the Nebraska Advocacy Services board and the Munroe Meyer Institute’s Consumer Advisory board. “I always try to speak on behalf of the Spanish-speaking families. I am their voice.” Her work earned her the 2010 Heartland Latino Leadership Conference Heath and Human Services award. “It was an honor,” she says of the recognition. “It told me I’m doing a good job and to keep up the good work. I know the importance of supporting my community.” She says a cultural stigma makes some Hispanics reluctant to reveal they have a special needs child or reticent to talk about the situation. Her job is identifying families and helping them to get the help or take the action they need. “The families and I really connect,” she says. “They trust me. Sometimes they just need to talk. It’s listening to them and crying with them. I know what they’re going through. I always tell parents, ‘We are the teachers. You need to talk about your child’s disability, you need to be involved. You have to get your kid in as many regular education classes as possible - the other kids need to learn from them. It’s for their future.’” Sharif trained to be an architect, but she’s found a new calling with PTI. “I love what I do. It enriches me. This is my project in life.” When Nidal and his brother, Nader, complete school, she might pursue a degree in social work.

Soy alcohólica y muchos nunca se dieron cuenta del nivel de alcohol que yo consumía. Siempre estuve muy apegada a la iglesia, crecí en una familia con grandes valores y sin embargo caí en esta enfermedad que me consumió por mucho tiempo hasta que finalmente logre controlarla asistiendo al grupo 24 horas de Alcohólicos Anónimos”. Fue lo que comentó Graciela (cuyo nombre verdadero fue omitido) quien ha sido autorizada por los fundadores de dicho grupo en México para que realice actividades en torno al alcoholismo de ayuda y educación en la comunidad latina de Omaha; enfermada progresiva e incurable que puede controlarse teniendo el apoyo adecuado que permita la abstinencia. Este será el primer paso para poder contar localmente con el grupo 24 horas de AA en español, lo cual se hace necesario tomando en cuenta que los hispanos son el segundo grupo étnico que más consume alcohol en los Estados Unidos, según la National Health Interview Survey, quien señala algunas diferencias entre los hispanos nacidos en USA y los no nacidos.
En estos casos, generalmente la cultura y la depresión juegan un rol importante en el consumo de alcohol, más aún en los inmigrantes indocumentados, comentó Eduardo Hernández, director del National Community Anti-Drug Coalition Institute, “ellos están al margen de la sociedad, dejan a su familia, están solos y eso les afecta. Incluso afecta a su propia familia, pues en sus países dejan la responsabilidad en manos de las mujeres quien también esta en riesgo de beber igual que los hombres”. Graciela también señaló que antes de los 40 años es más factible lograr un control idóneo de la enfermedad y agregó “esta es la enfermedad que envía más personas a la cárcel, que más familias destruye y que irónicamente es menos comprendida socialmente”. Actualmente, Graciela prepara un mensaje de vida y ayuda en la biblioteca pública del sur, el próximo 19 de mayo a las 6 p.m. Esta iniciativa sumará una alternativa más en contra de este problema de salud, pero sobre todo, firmará un compromiso moral de la lucha conjunta en contra de una enfermedad que puede destruir no sólo a quien la padece, sino también a su trabajo, familia, amigos y hasta su propia vida.
