SA celebrates Women’s Day M

Jean Sinclair, founding member of the Black Sash, protesting on Jan Smuts Ave., Johannesburg, May 30, 1985. Founded in 1955, the Women’s Defence of the Constitution League, known as the Black Sash, was a nonviolent protest organization whose members used their privileged white status to demonstrate actively against apartheid and its injustices. Their typical protest style, as pictured here, was to stand silently, wearing proper dress and a black sash, and holding graphic signs with various messages, generally written in both English and Afrikaans. Members were often the victims of violence.

other, sister, leader, pillar and friend – these are all the names that women go by today, millions of South Africans across the country will celebrate the hands that cradle the nation. This month South Africa pays homage to the fierce determination that saw over 20 000 women march to the Union Buildings in 1956 in a show of vehement opposition to the repressive pass laws. While 58 years have passed since that bold, historic gathering, South Africa has an intricate and good story to tell of the rise of women through the ranks of public and private life, to take up their rightful place in society. As with any good story, there are innumerable milestones to speak of and a fair share of challenges yet to be surmounted, and this month August 9th, is a fitting platform for all these voices to be heard. One of the proudest developments South Africa has to speak of this year for the month of August is the Women’s Build Project, where 1956 houses will be built in each province – an appropriate salute to the heroines of 1956. A total of 17 604 houses will be built by women and the beneficiaries will be women, the elderly and child headed households. The main highlights of the day was the official celebration, which was led by President Jacob Zuma under the theme “Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Women’s Charter and 20 Years of Freedom: together moving non-racial and non-sexist South Africa forward”. Other events for the month included the Women Awards in Construction on 14 August, the Women in Science Awards on 15 August, the Female Farmer of the Year Awards on 22 August and the Women in Water Awards on 29 August.

Editor’s Note Dear Readers THE 9th of August has since been declared National Women’s Day, a public holiday in South Africa, in honour of the women who marched against the pass laws on that day in 1956, as the struggle they fought was for the greater good of all South Africans. The month of August has also come to be known as the ‘Women’s Month’. The Women’s Month in South Africa is a way of acknowledging the critical role played by women in the struggle and to thank them for the sacrifices they made, the strength and determination they showed, and the special contribution that women made towards overthrowing the apartheid regime.

Women celabrated their Womens’Day at Union Building.

T

he Commission for Gender Equality on Thursday called on South Africans to celebrate Women’s Month in August. “The struggle continues for women’s emancipation and empowerment even in the post-apartheid era due to persistent structural impediments in the way of gender equality,” spokesperson Javu Baloyi said in a statement.

The public were encouraged to celebrate South Africa’s achievements and commitment to gender equality. In a recent report, the commission found that maternal mortality rates remained unacceptably high due to poor dissemination of vital information on family planning, nutrition, sanitation, access to contraceptives, antenatal

and prenatal health care services. “This is often compounded by limited knowledge of the health care services freely available in the public service.” The commission was eager to see education of girls boosted to delay first pregnancy and empower women to claim their right to make decisions regarding reproductive health.

INTERVENTIONS EMPLOYED BY SOUTH AFRICA TO ADDRESS RHINO POACHING

The South African Government will implement integrated strategic management of rhinoceros in South Africa under the stewardship of the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa.

Cabinet deliberated on the 2013 rhino population census undertaken in the Kruger National Park and decided on integrated strategic interventions for the management of rhinoceros in South Africa.

The protection of rhinos inside parks with intensive protection zones, and technology interventions.

New interventions include steps to disrupt crime syndicates, which will be implemented by the Security Cluster.

Other interventions include continued efforts to increase rhino numbers through, for example, translocation to low risk areas, range- and population expansion.

The number of alleged rhino poachers arrested since the beginning of 2014 has increased considerably compared to 2013.

Every year on the 9th August - Women’s Day - it is important to take time to think about the role of women in the struggle and recognise their courage and perseverance. It also gives South Africans the space to reflect on the ongoing struggles that women face today. Women’s Day also pays tribute to the fallen heroines who lost their lives in an attempt to overthrow the apartheid government. Alex Pioneer salutes all Women this Women’s Day. SAA flight operated by women SAA (South African Airways) general manager of operations, Zuks Ramasia, says even though women’s month is ending next week, her company will continue to celebrate women. Speaking on Morning Live, Ramasia says on Thursday morning an all-female crew for flight SA313 will fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town. In 20 years, the national airliner has managed to transform this traditionally male dominated business into an 80% male and 20% female

environment across all skills including the complex areas. Ramasia says gone are the days where woman are looked down upon – simply because some industries were perceived to be only for males. She has urged women to tap into industries that were dominated by men in the past and has also encouraged women to take part in the SAA recruitment opportunities. She adds that this initiative is part of the government’s National Development Plan (NDP).

Condom distribution in South African schools has always been a controversial issue. The idea has solicited opposing views. Some argue that it will curb teenage pregnancies and protect teenagers from sexually transmitted diseases, while others say the move will encourage more learners to become more sexually active. Chief Director at the Department of Basic Education, Dr Faith Khumalo says currently the department is offering Sex Education as part of the Life Orientation subject. Khumalo says the department wants to make sure that learners come out the schooling system with their academic knowledge and attributes, but also make sure that learners are well equipped to deal with their sexuality.       She says South Africans need to look for solutions to the problem of HIV/Aids. “We need to use all the interventions at our disposal and condoms are just one of these,â€? adds Khumalo. Khumalo says South Africa desperately needs a comprehensive sexuality programme. “It’s really not going to help anybody to focus on one intervention only. It has to be a holistic approach. It will involve all stakeholders and partners that are really relevant, with the best interests of a child at the centre of that,â€? adds Khumalo. Meanwhile, Programme Director at the Soul City Institute of Health and Development Communication, Dr Susan Goldstein says she is excited that the department is coming up with ways to educate people on these important matters. “I think that we have been pretending that teenagers and young adults are not having sex for such a long time and that we have been ignoring the very important sexuality education and reproductive self–education,â€? adds Goldstein. Goldstein says: “Everybody is quick to complain about teenage pregnancy. However, nobody is prepared to provide the tools for the prevention for these pregnancies.â€?

Bryanston High School spokesperson Liz Edwards said, “The idea of the tour was to take students to different parts of the world to learn more about leadership and responsibility through this experience.” Keagan Hayman, Dominic de Jager, Megan Denton and Amy Thompson were the four Bryanston High School students who attended the

tour, along with students from Reddam Bedfordview and Reddam Atlantic Seaboard. Edwards said, “The tour was completely voluntary so they had to pay for it themselves. They spent six to eight months selling goods and taking on other work, which also taught them about leadership and organisation.” The trip was divided into three phases: Project, Hike, and Rest and Relaxation. Through these phases they helped care for babies in the Ba Vi region, hiked through mountainous areas and spent time in Halong Bay. Student Megan Denton said, “All in all it was the most amazing trip we’ve ever been on and we truly recommend it to other thrill-seekers.”

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) accepted 131 new officers into its ranks The graduation ceremony took place at the Bosman Stadium, in Brakpan, and comes at a time when safety and security in Ekurhuleni is in the spotlight, following the recent deaths of two children in Reiger Park, Boksburg, due to crime. Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele called for the EMPD officers to take the fight against crime to the criminals operating in this area. In accordance with this, the metro has decided to unleash some of the most experienced officers on the Reiger Park area, with immediate effect. “These men and women are deployed there because of their wealth of experience in crime intelligence,” he said during the event on Friday. “Some will be increasing police visibility in the area and neighbouring Ramaphosa, while others will engage in gathering intelligence.” Referring to the recent brutal murders of Taegrin Morris (4) and three-year-old Cuburne van Wyk, Gungubele stated that Ekurhuleni had heard the cries of the Reiger Park community when they said enough is enough. “We as government are also saying: enough is enough,” he said. “What this means is that we all have the common challenge of turning the situation around. “Criminals cannot be allowed to rule our space.” Gungubele commissioned the Metro Police to devote most of their time and resources spearheading the war against criminals, while maintaining the integrity of the EMPD and building trust within communities. The new officers will be deployed to various precincts throughout the metro, including the OR Tambo International Airport. The new recruits are the best of 150 candidates accepted into the EMPD Learnership Programme, in December, 2012. They began their training in January, this year, and have undergone a series of theory and practical tests to prove their competency.

Rugby Castle Championship:

All Blacks demolish Wallabies

The All Blacks produced a sensational display of power and pace to answer their critics in style with a 51-20 demolition of Australia in their Castle Lager Rugby Championship match at Eden Park in Auckland. The World Champions scored their most points ever against the Wallabies to rack up another record and were in devastating form as they took the Wallabies apart to take the lead in the Championship with a bonus point victory. It may be a fact that the Bledisloe Cup stays in New Zealand now for another

year, and the All Blacks keep their unbeaten record at Eden Park, which has stood since 1994, but in the form they were in, it is doubtful that any team will beat them. Building their platform on a devastating counter attack, something they have always possessed, this dismantling of Wallaby power was aided by a superb kicking game that disrupted the visitors, a maul that, on the day, would rival anything the Springboks have, and a scrum that simply made the Wallabies look ordinary. As much as the rest of the world was talking about a

possible All Black demise after their draw last week, this week’s answer was more than resounding. It was a warning to the rest of the world. This All Black team is still quality and class, and anyone who wants to knock them off their throne is going to have to bring something special. The biggest difference was accentuated by the way the home team reacted when they lost captain Richie McCaw to a fair yellow card in the first half. They simply shut up shop, took control of the ball and carried on attacking.
