Welcome Romsey Golf Club possesses one of the most picturesque courses in the whole of Hampshire. An oasis of beauty on the edge of Southampton, it is situated in rolling countryside less than a mile from Junction 3 of the M27, thereby enjoying excellent road links and making it incredibly easy to get to. Described by one reviewer as ‘a real woodland gem’ the course makes its way through undulating ground with tree-lined fairways, raised greens and deep bunkers. Although not long, 5,718 yards par 69 for men, its tight lines will provide a test of golf for every calibre of player. New head professional and general manager Ben Stanbrough has some ambitious plans for the future that should see Romsey become an even more sought-after golfing destination. The club has outstanding facilities and makes a wonderful venue for weddings, birthdays, business meetings and just about any function you are looking to turn into a special event. New members are made to feel instantly at home by our friendly membership, who enjoy a lively and varied golfing and social calendar, while visitors are made to feel like members who have belonged to the club all their life. An enthusiastic pro shop staff, excellent caterers and a welcoming administration team will all do their part to ensure that your day at Romsey is remembered for all the right reasons.

The course and its history Romsey Golf Club was founded in 1900, before moving to its present site in 1924. Initially a 9 hole course, it was extended to 18 holes in 1974. The land on which it stands is leased from the Broadlands Estate and Earl Mountbatten of Burma was President of the club from 1953 until his untimely death in 1979. Our golf course is maintained to a high standard providing a challenging and stimulating contest to players of every standard. It is a true test and do not make the mistake of underestimating the challenge ahead based on preconceived notions based on total yardage alone. The signature 6th hole, which falls between two long and difficult par-3s, is a superb golf hole and if you can maintain your score through this section you will be playing well. Romsey is very much a thinking man’s golf course and one where the sensible golfer should not automatically reach for the driver when standing on the tee. It is important to survey the lie of the land before you play your shot, especially with your approach, paying particular attention to the contours of the green. Several of the greens have a definite favoured side on which to land the ball, with potential disaster awaiting on the other unless the golfer has the short-game credentials of a professional.
Even if the green is safely found in regulation, a par does not necessarily follow as some of the putting surfaces are tiered and again, rewards will come to those picking their optimum landing spot before striking the shot rather than simply aiming dutifully at the flag. Accuracy is key with many of the fairways lined with trees ready to punish a wayward drive. Trees also stand imposingly in the line of the approach to some of the greens, so course management is essential to either pick out the correct side of the fairway or be prepared to show your prowess at working the ball in either direction. The short 10th is supposedly the easiest on the course, but once hopefully par (or better) is secured there, there follows a trio of difficult par-4s. A warm welcome awaits on the 11th tee where a refreshment cabin can supply hot and cold drinks and a variety of hot and cold snacks before once again testing your ability through the closing holes. There are ambitious plans aimed at lengthening the course in the future, but any such work could be effected without intrusion or disruption on golfers playing Romsey as it now stands.

Professional The Head Professional at Romsey Golf Club is Ben Stanbrough, who accepted the position in December 2010 when he also became General Manager at the club. Ben has been a PGA Class A Professional for half of his life. After turning down a full golf scholarship to America, he turned professional and started playing events in Hampshire and Surrey. He held positions at Blackmoor Golf Club and Hindhead Golf Club before embarking on a new challenge in Orlando, Florida. Ben enjoyed a successful time working as a golf club management consultant in the United States and while there also got his first taste of golf course design. In his spare time, he played on the mini tours in and around Orlando. After an injury, Ben took up caddying and coaching on the LPGA tour and he has enjoyed a successful association with leading player Sophie Gustafson, who claimed a memorable win at the Irish Open in 2010. Ben is excited about the opportunity at Romsey Golf Club and will be on hand to assist you with all your golfing needs.

Practice facilities Romsey has a practice area not far from the clubhouse where members can hone their skills. Around 160 yards in length, it affords the opportunity to work on ball-striking and accuracy, two key components to a good round of golf. Members bring their own balls and are able to hit shots off grass, which gives them much more realistic feedback than synthetic surfaces as to what shape their game is in. There are exciting times ahead for the club and we have some ambitious plans for the future under the leadership of our new General Manager Ben Stanbrough, one of which is to be able to add a driving range to the club’s already enviable list of facilities. Smart golfers know that top of the list for reducing one’s handicap is a razor-sharp short game. That is certainly a prerequisite on a tight course like Romsey and why there is a nice putting green and short game area outside the front of the clubhouse. The putting green mirrors the excellent surface you will find out on the course, while you can also work on those other shot-savers that can make such a difference to a round, such as chipping and bunker play. If you do not have the time to go down to the practice area before your round, there is a driving net next to the first tee which is ideal for getting into the groove before you tee off.

How to join Romsey Golf Club has a very active membership numbering more than 600. Our men’s, ladies’ and junior sections offer a full competition fixtures schedule aimed at players of all standards. We also run a number of mixed events and have a varied and busy social calendar. We welcome applications for membership from all sections of the community. It is not necessary to have a proposer or seconder. The annual fees can be viewed on our website, www.romseygolfclub.com Seven-day and five-day memberships are available for men and women, with a special joint membership rate for couples joining at the same time. Other memberships available include country (living 40 miles from the club), flexible (offering discounted rates for rounds of golf) and social, enabling members to enjoy all the off-course events organised at our lively club. Romsey has an active and well-supported junior section and we are always keen to encourage new members. Juniors are particularly well-looked after at our club, with some fantastic rates available for those under-12, aged 12-15, 16-18 and 19-21. The annual fees include full playing rights and a healthy calendar of fixtures. We are looking to promote our Young Adult section to help drive the club forward and again there are preferential rates for those aged 22-25 and 26-30 and students under the age of 23. We invite you to play the course before you join and the green fee paid will be deducted from your subscription. Visitors are, however, expected to be able to play to a reasonable standard, to know and to uphold the rules and etiquette of golf so that they do not hold up play. Clubhouse The clubhouse looks out over the 1st, 2nd and 18th holes, with majestic views down to Romsey Abbey. Directions From the M27 Junction 3 Follow the M271 towards Romsey. After about 他 mile turn right at the first roundabout signposted Nursling. After 350 yards the entrance to Romsey Golf Club will be on your left-hand side. Entrance to the car park is through an automatic barrier. From the M3 Southbound Where the M3 joins the M27 follow the signs heading west. Leave the M27 at Junction 3 and at the top of the slip road follow the roundabout around to the right towards Romsey. After 他 mile turn right at the first roundabout towards Nursling and follow the directions above. Public transport The nearest mainline railway station is Southampton Parkway. Taxis are available with a journey time of approximately 10 minutes. Trains from London run around every 15 minutes from Waterloo, most of them direct. Journey time on the fastest service is approximately 66 minutes.
