Women, Wisdom and Wellness Jobs Jobs Jobs, This is something that we can’t get away from. We all need jobs. We are all looking for that Balance in life. We want to spend more time with our families but the job, gotta get the job, go to the job. The job isn’t paying the bills get another job. There is a better way! All you need is push personal limiting beliefs aside and believe in yourself. Today’s economy is shifting away from the days of working hard for a company for life and get rewarded for your loyalty. More and more women in high paying positions are getting laid off in favor of hiring someone fresh out of school that will do twice the work for half the pay. Raise your hand right where you sit if you have seen this happen. It’s ok, smile at the people looking at you funny. We are living in a new economy, not a downed one or a recession/depression. Do you think the job market is coming back? Not the one that you recognize. What everybody was brought up to believe is safe, is the new risky. In today’s job market, working for someone else is the scariest thing in the world. Layoffs are coming by the truckload. There is no such thing as job security anymore. Putting your life, your families life in someone else’s hands... Scary stuff. Moving people from full time to part time so there are no benefits Doing the same job for less money Then asking for you to do more, work more hours for the same money. Is this starting to sound familiar? Understanding WHY Network Marketing is a better way. Every single one of you should be running a home based business. Do you know why? Having a home based business not only generates extra cash flow, but it also gives you tax breaks. You can write off part of your home, hydro bill, insurance, gas.. This will lower your taxable income. What this means for you. Lower tax brackets, getting money at tax time rather than owing it. People are afraid of the network marketing profession

because they are or have met someone who joined a company, didn’t follow through with the training, didn’t treat it as a business then failed. If we get a job working for a company, don’t work according to the manual and get fired...Do we blame the company structure or the employee? The employee naturally. This alone should start to strike a cord about how we perceive one thing with one set of rules, while another thing with a completely different set of rules. It’s time for consistency. There are different options for these businesses. Avon and Mary Kay are networking marketing companies. They have been around a while and are successful. Who has never met the Avon lady? Network marketing companies are all around you. Let your guard down and allow yourself to take a look at what some of them have to offer. Really they all offer the same thing. - Extra income to pay the bills and have some left over - A team environment to make you be as successful as you want to be - Personal development training that helps in all areas of your life - Time freedom. The ability to spend more time with family and friends. Find a company that has some people / products that you can feel passionate about and get started. If you follow through with belief in yourself, the world becomes open. “Whether you believe that you can or can’t, you’re right” Henry Ford It is becoming that time to consider new possibilities. As Morpheus says “ Blue pill or Red pill”

REAL OR FAUX: LOUIS VUITTON BY CASSIDY ALLAIN

We’ve all been there. Hunting through the endless isles at the thrift shop, scouring the shelves of a tiny vintage store, or scrolling through pages on Ebay when suddenly… could it be? A Louis Vuitton purse? And it’s only 19.99!?

Most Louis Vuitton bags are made out of a coated canvas with leather trim. The quality of these fabrics should feel top notch, not sticky.

Bringing Sexy Back BY Jennifer richard “Your clothes should be tight enough to show just because you want him to take you home. you’re a woman but loose enough to show He will, but he probably won’t be calling you you’re a lady” - Marilyn Monroe back the next day. What’s In, What’s Out BY SCOTT MCLEAN

There are only so many spiced lattes one can drink to try and mask the pain of summer turning into a memory. The best way to get over the post summer blues is to get excited about looks that can keep you warm and looking chic. Just like when we get our bodies ready for summer, we should get our wardrobes ready for fall. That’s why I’m going to give you what is in my opinion “in” and “out” for fall. In: Chunky Scarf - This year it’s all about volume. When shopping for scarves opt for a chunkier knit in a classic grey or navy. You can also try a pop of color in this season’s cotton candy pink, electric blue or amethyst.

Out: Thin Scarves – Besides the fact that a scarf is supposed to keep you warm in the colder months, those thin, long scarves need to go. Yes they may be soft and yes they may offer a variety of patterns and colors but they need to go.

A chunky scarf can add style to any look especially when thrown over a leather jacket or a wool coat. It can take you from a Some may think a long thin scarf is a nice frumpy look to a Miranda Kerr-esque (A.K.A. look but those people are wrong. It gives off perfection) look. a slightly pitiful look which is not what anyone should be trying to achieve. A chunkier scarf It’s a quick and easy way to stay stylish this fall is the way to go this year which not only looks and upgrade your fall jackets from last year. cuter but will actually keep you warm this fall.

Sleek Fitted Boots – This past summer the sleek Loose Bunched Boots – This is a look that I minimal stiletto sandal was THE shoe to have. enjoyed once upon a time but like all great stories this one has ended. There was a This fall the sleek fitted stiletto boot in any moment when a suede or leather calf length length is the boot to have. It doesn’t matter boot that was bunched up was the only look if it’s knee length, calf length, or ankle length; to have when it came to boots. That is no as long as your boot is minimal and fitted to longer the case. It looks a little sloppy and your leg you have a winning look. gives off a childish vibe which is not cute in my opinion. Leave the buckles, buttons, and metal hardware behind and keep it simple. For a This summer minimal was the look to go for dressier boot opt for a black knee high option. and it’s being carried on into fall. Minimalism For a more casual day look try out an ankle is what you should be looking for in your boots length suede boot in a dark blue. this fall. The less material you have bunched up around your ankles the better. 23

Ask the Stylist: Scott McLean What colors should we be wearing this fall? When fall rolls around you can count on 2 things, a variety of deliciously spiced lattes from Starbucks, and a to-diefor color pallet. When it comes to fall color pallets, we always tend to come back to the classics. This fall you’ll see staple colors such as navy, forest green, camel, and tan. These autumn staples give off a rich and luxurious feel which never goes out of style. Although these classic colors are safe and easy, we can always use a punch of color when fall comes around to make letting go of our summer technicolors a little easier. This year we’re seeing rich yellows, bold amethysts, electric blues, and cotton candy pinks which will make the changing leaves and cold nights easier to cope with. Pair these pops of color with black or grey to add a little contrast to your look.

turn color, we can’t forget about fabrics. A flawless fall color scheme is not complete without the right textiles. When shopping for your amethyst tones and your forest greens, try them in a felt jacket or a velvet top which will keep you not only color correct but also Although these fall pops of color will flawless. have you turning heads like the leaves 24

There’s so many types of jackets. What’s the best jacket to wear this fall?

When it comes to fall jackets you can go in many different directions. In my opinion, the perfect fall jacket is a bomber style shearling. A shearling jacket is usually a leather or suede jacket that has a lamb’s wool or lamb’s wool alternative on the lapel, collar, and lining. These were all over the Burberry runway about 2 years ago and they’re back and as chic as ever. I love this style of jacket for autumn. It’s a more casual style of jacket when it needs to be but the lamb’s wool accents give it a hint of luxury if you’re in a dressier situation. In a more casual setting you can pair this jacket with a pair of jeans, booties, and aviators and you have yourself an effortless yet chic day look. You can even pair this jacket with a dress or pant/heel combo so you can look stylish while staying warm.

Crazy Things Women Do For

FASHION BY JENNIFER RICHARD

We women are a special breed. We do so much to look good, sometimes it literally hurts. We wear clothes that don’t fit, we dye our hair, process it, apply fake nails, tie ourselves up, squeeze ourselves into fabric tubes, and inject things into our bodies, all in the name of beauty and fashion. We’re so obsessed with looking good that we’ll pretty much try anything to achieve this.

some other persons’ hair onto our own, all while holding in tears and white knuckling our chair arms. Why on earth do we do this? Shoes High heels, strappy sandals, stilettos. Kudos to all you women who can wear six-inch heels and walk flawlessly. I trip wearing flats, or even walking barefoot, you deserve a medal! We squeeze our feet into sky-high shoes to polish off an outfit. Your feet aren’t supposed to BE in that position! Sure, it makes your calves look great and technically counts as a work out, but still we do it, pain and crushed toes be damned.

Fashion Faux Pas BY JENNIFER RICHARD

Whether you’ll admit it or not, a fashion faux pas is almost like a rite of passage, one that leads you to bigger and better things, one that brings you out of your shameful style choices and into the light.

like you have a uniboob, it might be time to retire that sports bra. Upwards of 80% of women are wearing the wrong size bra; this is tragic. Educate yourself and go for a fitting. We can all see it. Them. Whatever.

1. Crocs. I shouldn’t have to elaborate, but, I will. Crocs are an unfortunate footwear choice. Although comfort is key in most cases, the argument for rubber shoes covered in holes worn with any outfit is a lost one. There are a plethora of accessories that are on the market that allow you to jazz up your Crocs. Don’t do it. Just don’t. Friends don’t let friends go out wearing Crocs.

4. If I can SEE your bra or underwear, you’ve committed a fashion faux pas. Nobody should see the cute leopard print thong you’re wearing, tuck that in! I shouldn’t be able to see your bra straps either. There are a few current trends that allow for your bra to be seen under a sheer shirt. This is a delicate line that should be approached lightly. I was scrolling through a wedding photographers’ albums recently and stumbled upon a bride in a STRAPLESS gown wearing a very visible, bulky bra underneath. Straps for days.

2. Peanut Butter and Jam. Nutella and Toast. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Amazing duets across the course of our lives. Socks and sandals are NOT one of them. NEVER is this acceptable. NEVER is this fashionable. Guys, girls, little kids, just no. I’ve seen men wearing thong sandals and socks. 3. As a gal that managed a lingerie store for years, I can tell you that there are few things that are less flattering than a bra that doesn’t fit. If you look like you’re sporting udders under your shirt, you need a bigger bra. If you look 32

5. Fake Tans. A natural tan is a beautiful thing. If you’ve protected yourself against the elements and put on the proper SPF lotion, the sun will still bless you with a golden tan. I’m guilty of frequenting tanning beds in the past myself; I can’t knock that for a special occasion or as a pre-tropical vacation prep. When you look like Chester Cheetah though, we know you bought it.

6. Scrunchies. Velvet, corduroy, satin. Bad in the 80’s. Still bad. 7. Straight up, clothes that don’t fit. If you look like a busted can of biscuits, it might be time to rethink your size choices at the store. EVERYONE can look smokin’ hot in ANY outfit, as long as it’s the right size. Doing a little research into what styles most flatter your body type can alleviate a ton of potential issues and snickers from passerby. 8. Fanny Packs. Now, I know that these are making somewhat of a come back because of their versatility and ease of access, but I just can’t get on board with a tiny purse that you strap to your waist. 9. Track suits. Now, I know that your Juicy Couture suit from years ago might seem like a good option in a pinch. It’s not. Track suits are out. Unless you’re playing a professional sport, you probably should retire this outfit too. You can still rock comfy wear without being all matchy-matchy. 10. Leggings. I fought with myself on this one. I’ll tell you why. I bought a pair for myself on my birthday last week. Mainly just to see what the fuss was all about. I prompty fell in love and declared loudly that I might never wear real clothes again. This, obviously, won’t happen, but the thought truly crossed my mind. I think that anyone can wear leggings, but in the right environment. You can’t wear them just as pants with a tight top and nothing else. It just doesn’t work. Wear them in the comfort of your own home, wear them under a chunky fall sweater accented with some chic boots, just don’t wear them if we can see everything God gave you in the front, and if your ass is eating them in the back. Like I said before, I KNOW we’re all guilty of at least one of these, but the real hero here is the friend who doesn’t let her other friend out of the house without at least a warning that she is well on her way to being placed on some top 10 list.

Big,

Sexy

A COLUMN BY CASEY DONOVAN Hiya Ladies! My name is Casey Donovan. 10 years ago I was crowned the Winner of Australian Idol 2004 at the tender age of 16. I was a big girl then and I am a big girl now. I was shy and did not like being the centre of attention. At age 14 music started to become a big part of my life and my music style was very much like my fashion style – Grunge. I was far from popular but as is the way with teenagers, I gravitated towards other kids who were ‘just like me’ and we became known as the “black cloud”.

pay for me to go to the “Australian Institute Of Music” to study full time and focus on my music – but there was a catch. My step dad Norm said that for me to go to this creative school I would have to first audition for Australian Idol. The Idol juggernaut had premiered in 2003 on Australian screens and had rated in the millions.

I was mortified! Me – this grungy, large 16 year old girl appear on the biggest singing stage in Australia? I did not want to do it and was dragged along; kicking, screaming and swearing but I did audition, certain that Like a lot of teenagers, I lacked confidence, I would not get through. Then certain that I spent a lot of time on my own and focused would not get far. And ultimately certain I on music. It was my creative outlet; whether it would never win! was mucking around with friends, singing into my hair brush in front of my mirror or on the And so it was that I had to accept the fact that odd occasion in front of a crowd. Music was I was now in the public eye and was going to a love that was quickly growing stronger to be judged not just on my singing but on what the point where my parents finally agreed to I wore and how I looked. 34

I could no longer be the girl that wore baggy low cut jean shorts, heavy metal band T’s and of course the odd coloured black and red converse high tops. During my time on Idol, the stylist would ask me what kind of clothes I liked and I said “boys clothes and anything that will fit me from Tree Of Life” (a hippie shop here in Australia) as that was not only what I was used to wearing but the only clothes that would fit. My fashion sense back then was a little skater meets rock gothic punk with my added dreadlocks and black eyeliner – which really was not going to work on Idol! I was a size 18/20 (Aus) back then so it shouldn’t have been as hard as it was to find clothes and styles that were fitting to my age – but it was. It was almost impossible. Fashion was not on my side unless I wanted to look like a pastel coloured Pavlova on a summer’s day. Shopping for me was not fun. It was merely a chore that I had to do so that I wouldn’t walk around in my birthday suit. But how things have changed! The last few years has seen the plus size market grow with great brands, great styles and fashion-forward items that are super trendy and look super hot on all us Big, Beautiful and Sexy girls. I love shopping now! I love wearing colour! I love all the accessories! I love stepping out the door and KNOWING I look amazing! “Plus size” clothing has really evolved and has put Big, Beautiful and Sexy girls on the map. It’s about time the fashion world realized we have money to spend and we want to look a million bucks even if we are just going to the supermarket! I am here to share my life with you all. From Plus Size Fashion to Sex nothing is off limits. I want to help you to be happy and confident in your own skin, to look and feel great and to feel the positive vibes! Until next month!

Advice from Mary... Nobody talked to me about health and peak performance, or about nutrition. If you are skinny, you were presumed healthy, but I ate fast food all my young adult life. I inhaled it. What I know today, how much better I would have been if I had been eating right before peak performances. I wish someone would have told me about how healthy eating and nutrition could affect my performance. Perseverance is important, never underestimate determination and heart.

Hair & Makeup: First Day on the Job! BY KRISTINA MALLET

You’re probably really excited to have landed this job. You’ve picked your outfit and shoes, pampered yourself the night before, and the last thing to worry about is hair and makeup. You want to pick a look that expresses who you are, but at the same time, it stays with the flow of the job. In today’s age, everything from colored hair to facial piercings are widely accepted, but you probably should not have blue and green hair working in a business office. If you are in an office, before your interview, be sure to take a look at other employees. Is there hair completely done? Are they wearing heavy makeup, or is it more daytime? These are the questions that you want to ask yourself ahead of time. When you pick your look, take your time, find colors that match your outfit. But you don’t want to overuse colors. For example, if you’re wearing a purple outfit, chances are you shouldn’t go with a purple eye shadow. You’ll want to for with something a little more subtle. Hair and makeup play a much bigger role than you may think. Employers usually set out guidelines for it, but you should always have it done. One of the biggest reasons, is that it shows a commitment. If you’re willing to take the time to dress yourself up, then you are willing to be patient in other areas of your life. One last tip, is to stick with what you know. Now is not that time to be experimenting with that Smokey eye you have always wanted to try. Now you’re ready to get ready for your first day on the job! 54

Hair Extensions:

Real vs. Synthetic BY BRYANNA O’DONNELL

Ever wonder why your hair never seems to be as luscious and as full as those beautiful models you see in the magazines? Hair is like human bodies. They come in all lengths, colors, and textures. Similar to bodies, we can use fake, or prosthetic devices to add to ourselves to achieve a desired look. Women use heels to look taller, tan to appear darker and the newest trend is hair extensions to make hair appear longer and thicker. So what is the 4-1-1 on this new trend? And what should you know before buying this product and what are the differences between synthetic hair extensions and real human hair extensions. 1. Price: Consider your price range. Hair extensions are pricey. Human hair extensions can run up a bill of 200- 1000 dollars depending on how many strands and colors are required. Synthetic hair extensions are a bit cheaper, but they do not last as long. Consider how long your usage period is and choose accordingly. If you want an everyday look, human hair is more compatible with your own hair, and 58

allows seamless styling. Synthetic hair is a better option if you only need to use extensions for prom, pageants or a wedding since they are cheap and basically disposable. 2. Durability- In the long run, Synthetic hair may be more durable because it cannot be damaged by harsh chemicals such as heat, dyes and parabens. You do not have to wash them, moisturize them or treat them in any way. Human hair, if taken care of properly is much more durable if taken care of properly. Extensions do not grow, so you must be particular and through when taking care of them. 3. Styling- While human hair extensions can be dyed, cut, and styled with heat they are compatible to any style at any time. Synthetic hair often comes in one style and cannot be styled with heat. They cannot be dyed, and they are not versatile. However, you can now purchase synthetic hair that can be styled with heat for a heavy price tag.

There is something to be said for being forthright and honest with your partner. As we all know, no relationship is perfect. Compromise, negotiation, and discussion factor heavily into relationships that pass the test of time. The following is a list of common relationship problems. While everyone’s “solutions” will be unique to their own situations, I’ve offered some general tips as starting blocks to addressing the issues. 1) Jealousy or an overall lack of trust: Since most couples do not spend every waking moment joined at the hip, trust is crucial to the maintenance of a strong and happy relationship. You need to believe that when your partner isn’t with you, that they’re doing right by you. Jealousy often tends to

When one person seems to hold all of the bargaining chips, resources, and be solely responsible for the majority of the decisionmaking in a relationship, it can cause strain and tension. Good relationships tend to be a merging of equals, rather than one person exercising power and control over the other. Sometimes this imbalance is more of a perception than a reality. Other times, however, one partner behaves like a control freak and tries to make choices for two. This can cause frustration and resentment. 3) Abusive behaviour: This is a sort of extension of the previous point about power. Sometimes that desire for control can result in one partner becoming physically, mentally, or emotionally abusive.

10 Relationship Problems AND SOLUTIONS! BY ANGELA VINCENT

be more indicative of a lack of self-esteem Attempting to increase your position or status on the part of the jealous person than wrong- by harming your partner is never okay. This type doing on the part of his or her partner. of behaviour is totally about the perpetrator and NOT the victim. Solution: If your gut is telling you not to trust your partner, then there’s a good chance Solution: Leave. If you’re being abused, get that you shouldn’t be with them, whether out. If your partner is willing to go to counselling your worries are legitimate or not. If you aren’t to address and resolve his or her issues and going to be comfortable being apart, you you choose to take him or her back, that’s will probably end up going completely nuts. up to you. In the meantime though, you can Try to think about why you are experiencing rest assured that abuse occurs cyclically more feelings of jealousy. Is it because you were hurt often than not. You might hear the words, by someone else? What concrete reasons do “It won’t happen again”, but you’d better you have for not trusting your partner? How believe it will. Your personal safety comes do you feel about yourself? Discussing your before your relationship. feelings with your partner or a counsellor might make a very complicated emotion make more sense 2) Imbalance of power/control: 70

4) Determining how much time to spend together: We’ve all been there. One half of a couple thinks one night a week together is plenty, while the other party wants to spent every free moment together. One person feels abandoned while the other feels smothered. Different people have different expectations about how much time spent in each other’s presence is the “right” amount. Solution: Talk. Compare schedules. Be honest about how much time together each week seems like an appropriate amount. You need to be willing to compromise and find some common ground. If none can be found, maybe you both need to find a partner who is more similar in this regard. 5) Sex Here we go. You knew this was coming, right? Healthy, happy relationships generally exist between people who can knock each other’s socks off in the sack. For an overtly sexualized society, we tend to have a ridiculously hard time being honest with our partners about what we want in the bedroom. Solution: Let your partner know what works about and what doesn’t. Tell him or her what your fantasies are. Be open to feedback on your performance as well. The more open you both are about learning how to please one another, the more satisfying your sex (and your relationship) will be. 6) Having different values. This is a tricky one. Your values are your values. They are what have shaped you into the individual that you are. These are things that generally don’t change over time, once established. They guide your behaviour and your life. Ideally, you’ll find someone with similar values to yours and who prioritizes in a similar way. Here is a brief example: John values making money and having nice things, and therefore works long hours. His wife, Amy, places more value on time spent together as a family than material wealth. You can see how resentment may develop. Neither one is “right”, but the difference in their core values may drive a wedge between them.

Model: Megan MacLaren Photographer: Jason Lorette

Solution: The main thing is to be very open and honest about what your values are from day one. Religion, family values, political affiliation, equality, ambition, health, fitness, and other values that guide your life should be discussed. You need to be honest with yourself about what values are must-haves and which ones you can be more flexible about.

Don’t let him off the hook. If you honestly feel that trust has been damaged beyond repair, start walking.

9) Different expectations When we enter into a relationship, we go in with preconceived expectations about the way the relationship will proceed. The problem is that the other person has expectations too 7) Lying: and theirs might differ from yours. These are So, you catch your partner in a lie. This can expectations about everything from who sometimes be viewed as an epic breach in drives, to who pays, to how often you talk on trust. Knowing that your partner deliberately the phone, and so on. tried to deceive you is a terrible feeling. Solution: Don’t sit down and make a list Solution: An important question to ask yourself of everything you expect from your new is whether your partner lied to spare your relationship. Instead, be honest. Bring any feelings or whether he or she lied to cover issues up as they arise, rather than dump a pile his or her own ass. That could make or break of grievances in his or her lap when you’ve your relationship. Was the lie about something earth shattering or about eating the last Oreo? Try not to blow things out of proportion. Talk about the reason behind the lie and keep your eyes open. If your partner is consistently lying to cover up his or her bad behaviour, moving on might be your best bet. 8) Cheating Uh oh. This is a big one. One of you committed the ultimate infidelity and did the nasty with someone else. How do you move on from here? We’ve all heard the expression, “Once a cheater, always a cheater”. While this is often true, there are certainly plenty of examples where the offender realizes his or her mistake, makes amends, and never repeats their mistake. How do you move on after feeling completely betrayed? Solution: Try to think less about the act itself and more about the WHY. Why did the infidelity occur? (Note: You’re not excusing the behaviour) Don’t accept the classic copout “It just happened” as an excuse. What led your partner to cheat? Try to have an honest discussion about the situation. Couples counselling is an option. Women, especially, tend to blame the other woman to try to rationalize the situation. Remember that your significant other is the one who betrayed you.

decided that you’re fed up. It’s much easier to discuss one orioles at time than ten. Always be open to compromise. Be flexible. You’ll never find someone who thinks exactly like you. You both have needs and it’s important that you’re both getting the most out of your relationship. 10) Stress: Life throws us curveballs from time to time. Between work, children, illness, families, bills, car repairs, running a household...whew...I’m getting stressed out just writing about it. It’s normal to experience various levels of stress in our lives. Unfortunately, this stress can seep into our relationships with our partners. For example, after a terrible day at work, you get home and your husband breaks a glass

as you walk through the door. You know it’s an accident, but you unleash the beast. Stress causes us to respond to minor incidents in ways that may not be appropriate to the situation. Solution: Recognize the physical signs of stress. Know what your triggers are and be honest about them. For example, I dated a man who needed an hour to unwind after work before I would call. He knew that if I called right away, that he would probably snap at me because he always felt stressed after leaving work. Avoid discussing hot button topics or issues when you’re already in a state of unrest. Finding healthy and/or productive ways to manage stress can go a long way in preventing stress from other areas of your life from damaging your relationship.

Types of Men Women Avoid BY ANGELA VINCENT Have you ever noticed that there are some men that have women flocking to them like moths to a flame while there are others who have women running away from them like frightened deer? Well, ladies. I have been that frightened deer. MANY times. The following is a list of some types of men that I’ve run from and why I think you should avoid him like the plague.

While sensitivity is a positive quality, emotional dependence is not.

2) Mr. Boring: How you will recognize him: Mr. Boring, like the name suggests, is extremely predictable. You generally know what he will do or say before he speaks or acts. His attempts to be funny fall flat. My ex used to say, “Supper ready yet?” every time he called someone regardless of 1) Mr. Needy the time of day in an attempt to be funny. Why you should avoid him: Dating someone should never mean giving up your right to make your own choices. People who try to control the behaviours of others tend to be insecure, misogynistic idiots. You deserve better.

How to Instantly Kill the Mood BY ANGELA VINCENT

Have you ever been in a situation where things are getting hot and heavy, all systems are go, and then something happens that causes everything to grind to an immediate, terrible, and frustrating halt? Of course you have! We’ve all been there. There are certain behaviours that you are best to avoid unless your goal is to have to finish the job solo. Here are some of the top offenders. Answering the phone: If you’re heavy into foreplay (or even doing the deed itself) and your phone rings, what do you do? You IGNORE IT! Answering the phone lets your partner know that your mind is somewhere else. The person on the other end of the line isn’t about to ring your bell, your best bet is to pay attention to the person in your bed. Playing the wrong music: I, for one, do not want to get it on while listening to Nickelback, Insane Clown Posse, the Mortal Kombat soundtrack, or Zamphir’s magical pan flute. The music you choose to play while getting it on can either set the mood or totally obliterate it. Choose wisely. The infamous “head push”: Guys, we know that you like when we touch your penis or go down on you. This is not a heavily guarded secret. If we want to do those things, we will. Don’t grab your partner by the back of her head and push her face into your crotch. Also, don’t grab her hand and place it on your dick. Don’t make those decisions for her in such a creepy way. Yeesh. Bad kissing: Nothing can turn someone off like a supremely gross kiss. Don’t lay your lifeless slug of a tongue in his or her mouth. Don’t flap it around like a windsock in a hurricane either. Don’t lick

his or her teeth. I will admit to being guilty of the “head push” mentioned above, if only to get his gross, hyperactive tongue out of my mouth. Saying the wrong name: Oops! While in the throes of passion, you cry out to your lover... except the name you blurted out does not belong to the person that you’re currently with. There is no recovering from this. You’re in deep shit. Period. Skipping foreplay: Trying to forego foreplay and skipping right to the main event can give your partner the Impression that you’re rushing. Foreplay prepares your bodies and your minds for sex. Your experience will be much more enjoyable if you take your time. Faking it: While it’s nice to let your partner know that you’re enjoying yourself, obviously fake moaning, shrieking, “Oooh yeahs” and the like can make you sound utterly ridiculous. Unless you’re a Meryl Streep or Anthony Hopkins contemporary, your performance probably isn’t fooling anyone. Leaving to pee: Yeah, I know. When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. It’s pretty good practice to go use the facilities BEFORE things heat up, whenever possible. Leaving in the middle of sex to “drain the snake” isn’t exactly the epitome of sexiness. Lying in bed while listening to your lover emptying his or her bladder is not something that poets typically write sonnets about. Bad breath/BO: Be clean. If you haven’t showered for three days, chances are pretty good that the goods aren’t fresh. Also, kissing someone whose mouth smells like the inside of a garbage can is just gross. Take the time to freshen up.

The Master Cleanse BY RACHEL RICHARD

Whether it is to lose those last pesky 10 pounds, or prepare for a particular event, people have been dieting for centuries. The weight loss industry has waged a war on women’s bodies for decades by telling us how to tan, wax, drink, eat, or purge to attain a certain level of beauty. Diets have played a large role in that bullying. From eating certain foods, to refraining from eating at all, there exists a diet for every purpose and requirements, and the Master Cleanse has been the pinnacle of weight-loss regimens in the twenty-first century so far. The Lemonade Diet There exists more that 1001 diets, each of which varies in length and success. For its part, the Master Cleanse, otherwise known as the Lemonade Diet, has been around since the mid-1940’s. The detox regimen was first proposed by Stanley Burroughs, an alternative health practitioner back in the 1940’s as a cure for stomach ulcers. He later published his diet in 1976 for weigh loss purposes. The cleanse gained popularity when it was republished in 2004 by Peter Glickman following a method designed to reach a new and wider audience. Its proponents include Beyoncé Knowles, who followed the diet to lose weight for her role in the movie « Dreamgirls », and Jared Leto, who did the same to lose the pounds he gained to play Mark David Chapman in « Chapter 27 ».

84

The cleanse consists of limiting your diet to a lemonade blend in order to flush your body of all unnecessary toxins. It works by limiting your calorie intake to the sugars contained in the lemonade; 1,300 calories compared to your daily diet of an average of 2,150 calories. Its purpose is to force your body to burn the pounds of fat from your 8501,500 calorie deficit, as well as some water weight. If you follow the diet’s instruction to the letter, whether for the recommended 10 days or the entire 40 days, you will lose weight. It is just a question of how many pounds you wish to lose and how long you want the diet to last. The Diet: Recipe and Process The Master Cleanse is essentially composed of two parts. The most important one is the lemonade itself. It is mixture of two tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice (from organic lemons), two tablespoons of maple syrup, 1/10 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and 11/4 cup of warm water. You must drink six to twelve glasses of this concoction every day. The second part of the diet is comprised of herbal laxative tea that must be drunk at night, and four cups of salt water in the morning (two teaspoons of sea salt in 4 cups of water.). The entirety of this diet works as a laxative to flush out your intestines, so keep close to a toilet at all times. You may drink water during this time, but refrain from consuming alcohol, coffee, tea, or any health supplements or vitamins. This diet must

be followed for a minimum of ten days, to an extension of thirty days if desired. When the cleanse is completed, transition to a diet of solid foods over a few days. If you have decided to try the Master Cleanse for yourself, I highly recommend you check out the book « Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days » by Peter Glickman for further instructions. Does it Work? Let’s be honest, the great majority of people who try this cleanse are doing so for its weight-loss purposes. The so-called toxins contained in our bodies are naturally dealt with by our organs— such as the liver, lungs, intestines, and kidneys— and do not require outside assistance. The Master Cleanse has a 100% success rate amongst those who follow its instructions. However, little is known of the diet’s long-term consequences on the human body. Diets and fasts can be, by their own nature, detrimental to the human body. In order to healthily subsist, our body needs a balance of a nutritious diet and exercise. Completely eliminating all nutrition from your diet is not healthy, but it does not have to be toxic if it is done for a limited period of time, and under strict guidelines. Despite the Master Cleanse’s proven success, be wary of letting it become your go-to weight loss solution every time you need to lose a pound or two. The Dangers of Fasting It would be irresponsible on my part if I did not underline the consequences of this cleanse. If you are interested to know more on this subject, you can check out a similar piece published in our May issue (Spring Cleaning Your Body).

The lemonade is not in and of itself harmful, but it does not consist of some miracle cure for weight loss either. The water it contains is healthy for you (you really should be drinking more water) but it contains no intrinsic nutritional value. The same could be said for the lemon juice, which might be interpreted as a detoxifying agent, but it is no match for your stomach acids. The maple syrup’s only purpose is the sugar—and calories—it contains to help you burn some energy. Finally, the cayenne pepper works as a laxative to help your bowel movements, which is the sole purpose of this lemonade in the first place: a laxative to help clean your body of excess water, and the toxins it may contain. Should you try it? I am not a nutritionist, nor have I tried the Master Cleanse myself. I cannot tell you if you should try the diet yourself or not, but I do know this: if you are looking for a long-term solution, this is not the diet for you. If anything, it will convince you to try it the right way, healthy eating and exercise. During the course of this cleanse, you will undoubtedly lose weight (you will likely gain it all back in the following week), and have clearer skin (that’s not from starvation, but from water: drink more!). If you still want to try it, I assure you will never complain about the agony of eating a salad again when you have reached the thirty-fifth day of your « diet » without a bite of food.

The only reason the Master Cleanse is successful, is because you are, in effect, starving your body of all nutrition. If you stopped eating tomorrow, I guarantee you would lose weight. Fasting is not only dangerous, but it is not profitable because when the diet is completed and you resume consuming the same amount of food you did before, you will gain all the weight back quicker than you put it on in the first place.

25 Harmful Foods You Eat Every Day! BY RACHEL RICHARD There is a general rule about food: the better it tastes, the worst it usually is for you. To be honest, that is probably just my sweet tooth talking. These types of food are not limited to junk food or sweet, but rather foods you ingest on a daily basis; foods whose nutritional value is not explicit. The ability to identity nutritional foods is actually harder that one believes it to be. As nutritious as a food appears to be, most people ignore its true content and composition. Most foods that are not in their natural state—such as processed foods—are packed with unhealthy additives such as sugar, wheat, pesticides, and sodium in unhealthy amounts. Apart from the taste, the better an article of food looks, the worst it usually if for you. Most harmful foods are not limited to so-called « fastfoods », or even sweets. In reality, harmful foods are things you eat every day in ignorance or their actual nutritional value. We have been eating these foods without knowledge of their content. I have compiled a list of such foods. It is by no means exhaustive, but it paints a general portrait of the web of deceit over food. Harmful Foods 1. Microwave Popcorn: Packed with high levels of sodium and diacetyl (buttery flavour), his is not a healthy snack option. Moreover, the chemical coating of popcorn bags contain a substance that is a likely carcinogen when it melts down in the microwave. 2. Salad Dressing: If you decide to eat a salad, do not cancel out the nutritious ASPECTS of the contents of your salad by drenching it in salad dressings, especially those who are filled with additives, sodium and sugar. Try virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar if you need some extra flavouring. 3. Trail Mix: Nuts are often mistaken as a healthy snack, but they are oftentimes covered in salt, sugar, and mixed with chocolate. Read the nutrition labels! Try making your own by mixing together plain unsalted

86

nuts for a quick snack. 4. Granola: Just like the above, granola can be nutritious in its natural FORMAT. However, that is rarely the case when it is mixed with dried fruit, nuts, and packed with sugar. 5. Fruit Juice: These two words compose one of the biggest oxymorons on the grocery store shelves. The fruits found in fruit juices contain none of their nutritious value, and all of their sugar. Beware especially of words such as « cocktail » 6. Whole Wheat: People who are sensitive to gluten should refrain from partaking in whole wheat foods as it can cause digestive problems. 7. Energy Drink: Stick to coffee if you need an energy boost, because these drinks are packed with high amounts of sugar. They should only be consumed by athletes as required. 8. Vegetable Oil: These types of oils are filled with fatty acids and Trans fats, unlike plant oils such as olive or coconut oil. 9. Low-Fat Foods: « Fat free » does not necessarily imply a lack of harmful ingredients, but a replacement with sugar and unhealthy substances. Sugar is usually a culprit of weight gain in the human body, not fat. 10. Margarine: While butter is by no means a heathy food, it lacks the artificial and unhealthy ingredients of margarine. Not unlike « low-fat foods » margarine is an over-processed food that lacks the health components of its natural complement, butter. 11. Energy Bar: Energy and protein bars can make excellent meal replacements as needed, but make sure to read the nutritional label before purchase because some brands are filled with sugar. 12. Muffin: Most pre-make muffins are made with refined grains and sodium, thus packing quite a calorie

punch. Try finding a healthier alternative for breakfast, and keep your muffin for a weekly treat or desert. 13. Already-Made If your salad contains more meats, cheese, bacon, and croutons than vegetables, it is not healthy. You might as well grab a hamburger, because they probably share the same number of calories. 14. Cranberry Juice: Cranberry juice cocktail found in grocery stores are packed with sugar and sweeteners to count the cranberry’s natural tartness. As an alternative, try finding natural cranberry concentrate and mixing it yourself with water. 15. Gluten-Free Foods: Despite the media circus that surrounds this infamous ingredient, gluten is not bad for you if your body is not sensitive to the ingredient. Even in moderation, gluten is not toxic to those who are sensitive. 16. (Flavoured) Greek Yoghourt: The Greek yoghourt fever has swept the nation during the past few years. Unfortunately, the healthy aspects of this snack are often countered by the fruit-flavoured syrup—packed with sweeteners and sugar—that is added to flavour the yogurt. Try adding fruits to natural, unsweetened Greek yoghourt instead. 17. Dried Fruit: Dried fruits are just like fruit, except it lack many nutritional ingredient found in fruit in their natural state, and they are file with added sugar and sulfur to ensure their preservation. 18. (Flavoured) Soy Milk: Soy Milk is a great source of protein and potassium, but flavoured versions such as chocolate and vanilla are filled with sugar. Might as well just eat chocolate. 19. Pretzel: The main ingredients of pretzel are sodium and white flour. While they have 1/10 the fat of potato chips, pretzels have just as much sodium and are nutritionally empty. They’re also made with white flour, which spikes your sugar and just makes you hungry soon after. 20. Granola Bar: If it’s a choice between a granola bar and skipping a meal, granola bars are useful. However these bars are packed with sugar, sodium and saturated fat. If you thought a granola bar was healthy as a snack, you might as well have a Snickers! Doesn’t sound all-natural anymore, does it?

21. Frozen Meals: I am not proposing to ban these all together, but as they are filled with hydrogenated oils and Trans fats, people should only eat them when necessary, not in substitution of other foods. 22. Artificial Sweeteners: The health consequences you avoid by refraining from consuming sugar more than make up for their loss with the negative side effects found in artificial sweeteners such as hallucinations and seizures from aspartame, and diarrhea and headaches from sucralose. Indulge in natural sweeteners instead, such as honey, maple syrup, and molasses. 23. Lunch Meats: Lunch meats contain just a fraction of the nutrias value of meat because in order to transform them into their current, modified form, they are filled with sodium and nitrates. 24. Canned Soups: One can of soup likely contains your entire recommend dose of sodium for the day, they are as incredibly dangerous for your body as they are delicious. Try making your own by throwing the ingredients in a blended and freezing the result for later consumption. 25. Sushi: Sushi made in Japan are likely to be a healthy lunch alternative, but our Americanized version of sushi is packed in sodium-rich ingredients, as well as fattening ingredients such as mayo, cream cheese and fried ingredients. Limit your intake of these delicious rice rolls as a treat. It is not a question of avoiding these foods at all cost. If that were the case, you would likely be subsisting on a diet consisting of fruits and vegetables alone. It is not realistic. I would advise you to use this list as well as your personal judgment to partake in these foods in moderation. Instead of eliminating them entirely from your diet, try to find healthier—and oftentimes—more delicious alternatives. Do not forget, you are what you eat. While it may be tempting to indulge once in a while, limit your daily diet to nutritious foods to keep a healthy body, mind and spirit. If you would not feed it to your dog or your child, do not eat it yourself. Here is a final lesson in contradiction: If food’s packaging tells you that it is healthy, then it probably isn’t.

A Hug Makes All the Difference BY RACHEL RICHARD It’s a weekday morning. You are heading out to work, whether on foot, by bus, subway, or car. As you are surrounded by other commuters, young and old, can you identify what most people are doing? Some people might be staring into space, others might have their nose in a newspaper, but the majority will have their eyes fixed on their smart phones. In this age of technology, most people have closer relationship with their electronics than they do with their peers. Nothing exasperates me more than when I see a family or a group of friends in a restaurant, sitting together, their drawn attention to the screen of their smart phones instead of directed towards the people sitting in front of them. Last week, I spotted a family out to lunch at a restaurant. Both parents were busy tapping away on their respective smart phones, and each child was equipped with their own tablet. Why is it so difficult to hold a conversation with people you supposedly chose to be with? Western culture dictates an individualistic, more detached interpersonal etiquette. Handshakes are reserved for a more professional setting, and we loath to sit next to a stranger in public when other seats are available. Paradoxically, in France they greet 88

each other with a kiss on one or both cheeks for example. I can imagine the horror with which I would be met if I attempted to kiss one of my college’s cheek. With reason. But it does not mean we have to practice that type of detachment as an art form. The Psychology of Hugging I have a question for you: When is the last time you hugged someone? A hug for no reason other than showing affection. To be completely honest with you, I cannot recall the last time I did either. Did you know that hugging was actually very healthy for the human body? Hugging has many health benefits for the human body, such as the following: - Research has found that hugging increases the production of oxytocin, which is responsible for behaviour such as trust, social recognition, maternal behaviour, and orgasm. In turn, real world implications include lowering the risks of heart disease, reducing stress, easing depression, as well as boosting the immune system. - Hugs can increase the levels of serotonin in your body, which is responsible for elevating your mood and happiness. - A great stress reliever, hugs have been proven to relax muscles, release tension, and

soothe aches. - The benefits of hugging can also be social and psychological in nature. Hugs can increase your self-worth and boost your immune and nervous system. They contribute to the healthy development of your relationship. There are many ways to enjoy the benefits of hugs without fearing arrest. One way is to get a massage. They are not called stressrelievers for nothing. Another way is holding hands with your partner. Entwining your fingers together with a loved one has been proven to reduce activity in the area of your brain called the hypothalamus, which in turn, lowers the levels of cortisol in your system, as well as the area that registers pain. If you are on your own, spending time with your pet have similar effects on your body. Petting your dog or your cat helps to lower blood pressure and improves immune function. If all else fails, sexual activity—whether with a partner or yourself—lowers the risk of depression and contributes to your immune system. The best kinds of medicine do not always come in a bottle. I hope you do not take instructions from this piece to wander in public and start hugging strangers. Talk about inviting charges of physical assault. Next time you meet with someone you love, in a conventional setting or on a special occasion, try hugging them instead of exchanging a smile. Put down your smart phone and pay attention to what they have to say. Remember, it’s for their own health!
