Letter from the Editor Let me start by saying Happy New Year on behalf of the entire team of Pinkblitz! Now that 2015 is here, I feel like it’s the start of a new beginning. We’re approaching our 2 year anniversary, and I’m so proud to say we’ve come such a long way. As you can see, we’ve started interviews and features with really well known people, but also of great women we believe to be positively influential.

u a e n i b a B

This month’s cover features Raven Nicholson, a single mom to 3 beautiful children who went from an unhealthy life style to a dramatic life change. I always believe that it’s so much better to be relatable to those in our magazine, on some level anyway.

Lilly

January is such a great month, and not just because I was born in this month, but because it’s the start of the next chapter in every angle. Instead of making resolutions to do things you’ll likely give up, try making a resolution to make better choices overall. Whether it be for your fashion sense, relationships or health wise, the little things are what make all the difference. So, my dear readers, enjoy this chance at the next chapter. The pages are blank, and if you live in the now instead of the past, you’ll be happier each and every day!

Top 10 Relaxing Bath Scents by Jennifer Richard You’ve had a long day at work, or play, and all you want to do is come home and slide into a nice relaxing bath. Sure, you could just sit there in the warm water and chill, but wouldn’t you rather add a little something to alter your mood? Whether it’s to soothe, invigorate, or beat some stress, here are 10 fabulous scents to get you there.

and pains in your body while you soak. It also acts as a deodorant which is a bonus!

Lavender is a soothing and sleep-inducing scent; I used lavender lotion on both of my babies and myself after bath time, it was almost guaranteed to knock us all out into a nice deep slumber.

Grapefruit is in the citrus family again, and is a fabulous addition to any bath. It will rev up your body’s feelings of energy and happiness and who can’t use a little more of that every day?

Orange is awesome if you need a pick me up in the morning, orange is the way to go. The exciting burst of the scent of oranges will wake you right up.

Lemon - The smell just screams clean. There’s a reason that it’s used in so many every day household cleaning products. It’s an uplifting scent that also lends itself to healthy skin and cleansing.

Peppermint is invigorating and stress-busting, this scent does it all. It’ll shake you out of a bad mood and put a little extra “pep” in your step. Vanilla is an amazingly relaxing scent. It reminds you of warm cookies and candles, and a few drops of vanilla oil or bubble bath and you’ll be in heaven. Eucalyptus is another “minty” scent, this one has anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve aches

Rosemary - A few drops of rosemary oil in your bath tub will help with mental alertness. If you’re the type to have a bath before you start your day, this will help keep your head clear.

Honey and Almond are relaxing scents that will also nourish your skin and keep it soft and smooth. Win, win! Sandalwood is a more powerful scent, often found in incense. Reason being? It’s been thought to curb anxiety and depression. The perfect end to a long day.

Good and Bad Foods?

by Jennifer Richard

“Some foods are so comforting, so nourishing of body and soul, that to eat them is to be home again after a long journey. To eat such a meal is to remember that, though the world is full of knives and storms, the body is built for kindness. The angels, who know no hunger, have never been as satisfied.” - Eli Brown, Cinnamon and Gunpowder We all have our favorites, the special birthday meal Mom used to make. The secret side dish that you loved made only delicious if cooked by your grandmother. The treats that you know you probably shouldn't devour but you just can't help yourself? Comfort food, soul food, the foods that make us who we are, part of our history The ones that make us feel better after a break up, or a fight with our best friend. The snack you turn to after a long, crappy day at work. To hell with the diet, just give me my mac and cheese. A staple in most restaurant menus, homemade mac and cheese just screams comfort. Warm, melty cheese, a cream sauce, and loads of carbs make this treat at the top of most comfort food lists. Sure it's terrible for you, but everything in moderation, right? You could make a lower fat version if you really wanted to, but it's the fabulous, dirty feeling you get after every bite that makes this dish worthwhile.

Chicken pot pie is another favorite. Swimming in a boat load of white gravy, chunks of chicken surrounded by carrots and potatoes sounds dreamy. Envelope all of that with crisp, flaky, buttery pastry and it'll feel like you gained 10 pounds in one sitting. Chili. Oh, chili. Consumed regularly over the cold months, this thick and meaty, saucy and delicious dish is best sopped up with a buttered roll. Hell, serve it in a bread bowl and you're ready to party! Stew! Beef, chicken, whatever your preference, this meal shouts comfort and safety all in one breath. I love mine topped with my mom's dumplings sprinkled with cheese, and drizzled with melted butter. Pie! Any old kind will do. A tall tower of apple pie, a sliver of tarte à sucre, lemon meringue, coconut creme, the sky's the limit. This WILL remind you of your grandmother. Sometimes, only a favorite will do, something that makes YOU feel good. You don't always have to count your calories, you don't have to worry about your jeans buttoning up, stop stressing every now and then and think of you. What will make YOU happy? If it's a big slab of cake, or a bowl of hot chowder, dig in. Feel good.

Spice up your Life

by Jennifer Richard

Adding spices to your food is one of the easiest ways to kick up the flavor and transform almost any dish, whether it be a tried and true family favorite, or something new to you entirely.

in chocolate. Capsaicin, which is a compound found in chiles, has been proven to boost metabolism, which is why when you read about most fad or cleanse diets, you will see to add them.

Using spices medicinally has been around for thousands of years, but it is only as of recently, that we are discovering their true value in adding to our health and nutrition.

Ginger: My mom always gave me ginger ale when I had an upset tummy, as I'm sure yours did too. Ginger has been proven to soothe an upset stomach. I worked it into a lot of my meals while I was pregnant as well. A safe, natural remedy. It is also thought to fight arthritis pains!

Here are some of the best cooking spices to add to your food that won't add a ton of calories, and can also aid in managing some health problems. Using spices also allows you to stay away from other flavor enhancements that aren't so healthy, like salt and butter. Rosemary: pairs itself well with chicken and potato dishes, as well as garlic and onions. It is known to fight off food borne bacteria and is said to also enhance mental focus. Chile Peppers: these peppers range in degrees of heat from mild to inferno, and can also be added to desserts to add a little punch that brings out the flavor

Curry Powder: This spice contains Turmeric which contains a very powerful anti-inflammatory called Curcumin that's been said to be fifty times more powerful than Vitamin C. Curcumin, in one study by doctors, inhibits the growth of certain breast cancer cells. Nutmeg: Not only does it add a dash of pizzazz to that eggnog that you consumed over the holidays, it's possible that this spice could help prevent cavities! Nutmeg can fight the germs in your mouth with its antibacterial properties.

Best Foods For Your Skin

By Presley McGlashing,

Esthetician and Makeup Artist

You’re skin is what you eat. Our skin is a complete body system that requires the same nutrition as the rest of your body systems. Proteins, carbohydrates, good fats, vitamins and minerals all play a key role in the health of our skin. Try adding these foods to your diet to get healthy, ageless skin! Green tea: This beverage contains catechins that help to boost oxygen and blood flow to the skin to increase nourishment in the cells for healthy, young skin. Green tea is also rich in antioxidants which fight against free radical damage in the cells. Tomatoes: Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a carotene, that helps to increase the skin natural sun protection factor, this means the skin will be able to protect itself from the harmful rays of the sun better. But that is not a reason to skip sunscreen use! Carrots: there is a reason your mom always told you to eat your carrots for good eyes, this is because carrots are high in vitamin A, which is not only beneficial for eyesight, it is beneficial for skin health as well. Vitamin

A helps the skin with its natural exfoliating process from the inside out keeping skin smooth, even toned and glowing. What do avocados, sardines, and flax seeds all have in common? They are all high in essential fatty acids Omega-3 which are the best thing to consume to keep skin hydrated from within, helps to prevent first signs of ageing, and even helps to clear up any skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and dry skin conditions. Almond milk: This is great for people who have frequent acne breakouts. Dairy milk tends to cause minor hormonal imbalances which can aggravate acne problems. Switching to almond milk can help keep breakouts at bay. Grass-fed beef: This is can be switched to any foods that are high in protein if you are vegan or vegetarian, but the key nutrient here is protein. Protein is essential for building up collagen and elastin in the skin, without protein in your diet your skin will begin to slacken and begin to show signs of ageing.

Beauty Elegant Hairstyles for any Occasion By Presley McGlashing

This season turn the basic everyday styles up a notch with these quick tips for a classy, elegant look. • The faux side shave is a great way to add an edgy feel to your everyday look, adding colored hair pins or braiding the pieces of hair that are pinned can give a flirty feel to the look. For a glamorous look, curl your hair with a one inch barrel curling iron or large hot rollers to add volume, shape and an elegant touch! • Give your short bob a bit of a glamorous feel by round brushing to curl in the ends. When you get to the top layer, over direct the hair by round brushing to the opposite side. When you put the hair back to the proper side you’ll have extra volume and a nice flare in the ends. This gives the style more movement and freshens up the look. A bit of hair spray to keep fly-aways in place and you’re good to go. • Love that high ponytail? Give your every tail pony a makeover by parting it in two and twisting each piece in opposite directions. As you twist each piece, twist them together loosely at the same time, kind of like a rope. This style is best suited for longer locks with minimal layers. Hair spray in to place and you’re ready for a night out! Optional: use a shine spray to make your ponytail look extra healthy and strong. • Love the look of big glamorous curls, but don’t have a large barrelled curling iron? No problem, Use the ½ inch curling iron (or any iron you have that is a small size) and curl your hair as usual. When you release the piece of hair give it a little tug and let it cool down. This loosens up the curl enough for a wavy curl rather than a spiral. Once all the curls are cooled down grab a small dollop of moose for curly hair and run it through the bottom part of the hair, this keeps the curls in place without that crunchy feel of hairspray. These styles are classic, elegant and can be easily transformed from day to night in a flash!

New Nails for 2015 By Presley McGlashing

White, Blue-grey, peachy-nudes and muted oranges, and let us not forget the ever popular metallic silver. These are the colours this season to get your hands on, or rather your nails! Use a peachy-nude or tan colour that is as close to your skin tone as possible, and add some white linear designs. Anything goes with this nail trend, its subtle, clean and designer all in one! From afar, your nails will look polished in a nude colour with high shine, classic enough for work, but up close they will be eye catching, intriguing and full of play! Blue-greys and metallic silver are popular this year with the newest manicure trend called “blank space or “negative-space manicure. This is achieved by painting the tip, side wall or the lanula(half moon shape at the cuticle) either of the desired colours, and leaving the rest of the nail bare. Add top coat to the entire thing for high shine. This is great if you work in an environment that doesn't allow bright colours. Peachy tones and muted oranges are the new colour trend to warm up the skin tones this year, and they are quite flattering on nearly every hand! These colours are best muted, not too flashy, to compliment everyone and to elongate the hands. Colours that are closer to your skin tone will make the hands and fingers appear longer and more dainty. Perfect for any work environment as it keeps your hands looking well kept and classy, and they are much less noticeable when they start to chip than a ruby red! Keep an eye out for these colours on the store shelves, and it doesn't hurt to get the matching glitter either! After all, glitter is the black eyeliner of nail polish: a staple in every girls clutch to change their look from daytime to nighttime in a flash! Photo by Natalia Ryan

Beauty Hairstyles for 2015

By Presley McGlashing

This year’s hair trends are the effortless styles that take little to no time creating. For short hair, the bob is always in, it gives the best shape for every face and can be done in hundreds of different ways. Bob haircuts can be long or short, sleek or curly, stacked or subtle. Anything goes. The favorite of many celebrities is the subtle bob with boho waves. Something not so structured and “perfect”, the boho waves can be dressed up and curled a bit tighter or for the everyday style loose waves are best. Long hair is slowly making a comeback too. Boho waves are a great way to transition short hair to long hair when growing it out, but also super easy to achieve overnight! With long hair, dry or damp, braid the ends to mid-length, these braids don’t have to be super tight as we don’t want any kinks in the mid-lengths. Spray some texture spray and go to bed. In the morning remove the braids, run your fingers through your hair and spray with a setting spray, and you’re good to go! This season, expect to see long, sleek, low ponytails. This style is a classic to say the least, and great for any occasion. When you pull your hair back to a low ponytail, brush it from the crown back to the ends to make sure there are no fly aways. Secure with an elastic band and spray with finishing hair spray. To make it a bit more elegant, wrap a piece of hair around the elastic band to hide it, and pin in place underneath. Long braids are a great way to spice up the ponytail style, they can be as intricate or casual as you like. To dress up the basic braid, make a smaller braid weave together with larger pieces of hair. To do this, smooth out your hair into a low ponytail, or a high ponytail if you prefer that, and secure with an elastic band. Next take your hair and split it into three strands. Take one piece of hair and begin braiding from the elastic band to the end, secure with a clear band. Next take the braid and the other two pieces and braid together as usual. This takes your simple braid from day at the office to night out with the girls! Photo by Edward Bowron Model Cloe LeClair

o n o D y Case Hiya Ladies, This month, it’s all about make-up, whether we wear a little or a lot, I think it is one thing that can change your mood in seconds! It’s an amazing thing isn't it?

Ahh, I have a special trick I do.. I keep one eye open and the other eye shut and steady when they are doing the other (it probably annoys the hell out of them) but I love watching how they do things. I am forever learning with different artists painting my face!

I have always loved a little bit of black eye liner and mascara to brighten up not only my eyes but my outlook on the day/night. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy not having to paint my face everyday but sometimes I love that extra confidence boost you get from applying something as simple as a bit of lip gloss or shimmer on your cheeks.

What I love most about make-up, is experimenting with my own face, playing around with different eye shadows and seeing what makes my eye colour change to a more crystal Green/grey (I find Purple is great fro the Green eyed ladies). One thing I am forever getting stuck on though, is how to do the liner flicks (Wings) on my eyes! Some days I get it just right and other days it seems to be the one thing that will never do what I want it to do!

Being in the music industry you not only learn how to put on your stage make-up (to make your eyes pop and not look like a sweaty panda), you also learn how to do event make up, media make-up and make-up for film. Believe it or not they’re all a little different.

This month I am putting the spot light on Eye makeup. I have looked over a few different online sites to see if I can find some helpful, handy tips on how to perfect your eyes, as the great William Shakespeare once said “The Eyes are the window to your soul”.

Some people opt to pay for a make-up artist and there is absolutely no problem with that! I have had my fair share of make-up artists and have picked up some awesome tips along the way. I like to watch how they do things, from applying shadows to my eyes, contouring my cheeks and doing tricky little things with my eye liner. You’re probably thinking, “How can she see what they’re doing when they are putting things on her eyes?”

16

Things you will need: Brushes Foundation (That matches your skin tone) Cotton buds (for any mishaps) Eye Liner (Pencil or Liquid or Both if you have them) Eye Shadow (It’s good to have 3 to 4 tones of colour for Eg: Gold, Light Purple, Deep Purple and baby pink white shimmer) Mascara

Ok, lets get started! I always start with my eyes because sometimes I use blacks and if my foundation is already on, I come out looking like a wild panda and then can never match up my foundation. (Now please keep in mind I am not a makeup artist, but take pride and love doing my own makeup. I may do things a bit different and “back to front” but it works for me) 1- Make sure face is clean, (You can apply a primer to start you off if you would like. A good primer smooth's your pores and minimizes the appearance of fine lines. Personally I don’t use it as it makes me sweat and get all flustered ha ha! 2- Apply Foundation to your eye lids (Wait a minute till its dry) 3- Apply your base colour first (I’m using a nice gold base) 4- Apply the lighter colour to your lid crease (This helps as a guide for when you put the darker colour on top, I use it as my sketch outline) 5- Apply the Darker colour on top what you have just done 6- Check to see if your eyes are even (Keeping in mind, that usually without doubt one eye looks better then the other, but try to even them out the best you can)

11- Apply Eyeliner to the lower lid (If you would like to also put a little bit of eyeliner on the outside of your bottom lid to give it a more dramatic look please feel free, or you can highlight under your bottom lid with the colour you applied to your top crease) 12- Fill in Eye Brow (This is a very important part of my make up, If you have a darker or filled in eye brow it kind of completes your eye look, makes things a bit more defined) 13- Mascara (Apply as little or as much as you want to top and bottom lashes, the more on your bottom lashes the more your eyes open) 14- Final Touch ups (This is where I over look and do my final touch ups, I usually go back over the creases of my eyes with a touch more colour and blend in.. Then I put my foundation on, but we can get to that next month) As I have Almond shaped eyes, I love to created a bit of depth in the outer socket of my eyes. I love a smokey look with a nice gold lid and darkened brow to make my eyes really stand out. I hope you have enjoyed this months column and look forward to chatting next month!

7- Apply some more base colour to your lid (This helps blend in your wings into your lid. You can also add a little bit of white to the corner of your lids to make them pop a little bit more) 8- Blend (Use a clean soft brush to lightly blend in outer wings. This helps for the next step. Also be careful not to travel the colour up towards your brow, your aim is to almost rub out the dark line) 9- Highlight underneath your brow (Using a clean brush, use either the same colour as your base or choose a soft cream shimmer I have made a bit of a mixture) 10- Apply your eyeliner to the top lid (Now this is a bit tricky. I am choosing to do a nice simple liner today, not to over the top but there are many different ways you can do you liner) Photo from http://becuo.com/different-eyeliner-styles-for-different-eye-shapes

Beauty Feel Great this Winter with Bath Rituals!

By Presley McGlashing

Esthetician and Make-Up Artist

Bubble baths, bath bombs, salts and candles. All sounds exquisite, right? Well this winter, I invite you to kick it up a notch! Try adding these things to your bath to create an indulging experience in the privacy of your own home! Bath #1: Flower Bath. You can go and buy yourself a lovely bouquet of roses, or any flower you like, and then pluck the petals. Yes, pluck them all and place them in your bath water! The flowers infuse the water with the vitamins and essential nutrients from the flowers, including antioxidants, that will nourish the skin while you soak. Add a glass of red wine, a few candles and you have a perfect night to yourself! Bath #2: Bath oils are a great touch, especially if you want an aromatherapy effect! Try oils that have a eucalyptus essential oil to relieve congestion, release tension in the muscles and stress from your mind! This is a favorite of mine after long days at work. Bath #3: Milk and honey bath. Yes, you read that correctly! This is a recent discovery, but it is a ritual that has been around for thousands of years. It is said that Cleopatra bathed in milk and floral water to keep her skin younger for longer. The lactic acid in milk gently exfoliates the skin leaving it soft and prepped for body cream, any kind of milk will do but I prefer to use whole milk. The honey helps to moisturize as well as heal any blemishes you may have! I like to make a honey face mask to go with this bath and have the ultimate relaxing experience. Light some of your favorite candles and enjoy!

Keep your Nails Healthy By Presley McGlashing

Esthetician and Make-Up Artist

It's that time again! You're skin is dry, your hair has accumulated enough static to power a table lamp, and to top it all off, your nails are now crumble at the same rate as a poorly baked cookie! It's no secret that the Canadian winter takes a toll on our hands, so here are my top tips to reverse the damage and keeping your manicure lasting longer! • File your nails weekly. This will actually help your nails grow, the filing action helps to stimulate blood flow to the nail beds so the nails are nourished from within and can grow healthy and strong. Filing is a good way to even out chipped edges so they don't snag and break. • Use cuticle oil. These oils condition your cuticles and nails so they don't become brittle, break or turn into hangnails. • Invest in a good quality hand cream, preferably with Shea butter. Shea butter is great for sensitive, dry and cracked skin especially in the winter. Keep your hands protected with a hand cream and your nails will stay healthy as a result. • Use nude nail polish. My favorite is “Tickle My France-y” by OPI. This pinkish-beige color is the perfect nude for most skin tones that can make nails appear longer and healthier. • My last tip is to treat yourself to a manicure! Monthly manicures help to keep your nails healthy and cuticles is tip top shape! Everything suggested above will make your manicure last much longer, which means your monthly manicure can be stretched longer than four weeks, saving you a few dollars this holiday season! Now, who doesn't love that math!

Keeping your Lips at their Best By Presley McGlashing

Esthetician and Make-Up Artist

Plump contour, perfect shine, and smooth skin. There is no denying that these are all characteristic of the perfect set of lips, but how do we mere mortals achieve the Kim-K, or shall I say the Kylie-J pout? You certainly won't need lip injections or some expensive lip treatment, just follow these tips and you'll have everyone wanting to know your secrets! First, exfoliate. Lips shed skin just the same, if not faster, than the skin on your face and body. If not exfoliated regularly, you skin on your lips can become dry, flaky and cracked leading to hydration problems. Create a moisturizing sugar scrub with a little bit of honey and sugar mixed together, apply to the lips in circular motions and either rinse or lick away the excess! Not to mention the circular movements with the grit from the sugar helps to stimulate blood floor to your lips resulting in a super plump pout, now who doesn't want that? To keep this pout plump and well hydrated, use a lip balm with added cinnamon extract. This keeps circulation stimulated for longer creating an even more plump look. Allergic to cinnamon? Use something Photo by Dustin Hurley Model Danielle Fairweather

with a menthol in it instead. You still get the tingle, but not as aggressive. Lip balms with Shea butter and rose extracts are great for softening the lips and keeping them well hydrated throughout the day. I like to apply mine right before my makeup so that by the time I get to the lips my liner won't smear when I put it on and my lips won't dry out from the lipsticks. Pick lip colours that are one shade darker than your skin tone, a dusty rose compliments just about any skin tone. Line your lips with a lip liner and fill them in towards the corners of the mouth, leaving the centre blank. With a lipstick of the same shade or slightly lighter fill in the rest of the lip, then take a brush or your finger to gently blend the lines where the lip pencil and lipstick connect. Optional: add gloss to the centre of the lip to create the illusion of an even plumper lip. There are the most highly coveted secrets to taking a thin, devitalized pucker and turning it into a bombshell pout! And don't forget to take a selfie, or maybe a couple, to show it off!

losing weight and changing her life

FOR RAVEN NICHOLSON, FEELING GOOD ABOUT HERSELF WAS NEVER SOMETHING THAT CAME EASILY. THIS IS BECAUSE AT THE WORST POINT IN HER LIFE, RAVEN WEIGHED ABOUT 220 POUNDS. I have always struggled with my weight. I feel food became an addiction due to my desire to be one of the skinny girls in school. My unhealthy eating continued throughout my college career resulting in continued weight gain. As I graduated and began my career I continued down the same path of using food as an addiction and way to comfort myself! I started a family and had three fabulous children which continued to add to my weight gain. I was miserable with the way I felt and looked in my clothes. I always became frustrated quickly when I did not see results as fast as I thought I should. I just wanted to walk into a store and buy what I wanted right off the rack and feel confident in it. The turning point was when I was over 220lbs and in the worst shape of my life, and a mom of a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 1 year old who couldn’t play with my kids!!! I had been wearing maternity pants for 6 years because I refused to buy a size 20!!! I was addicted to fast food, and I had no idea how to even start to get healthy and change my eating habits! My brother challenged me to get started and LOSE my first 10lbs. I was sooo extremely skeptical, never thinking a shake could change my life. Over the years I had tried several different programs (Nutri-System, Skinny Magic, Acai Berry supplements, Herbal Life, not eating, Curves, etc.) and nothing worked. I did not see the fast results or the support and encouragement that I needed to continue with the programs, and most of them were expensive. EVEN THOUGH NOTHING SEEMED TO BE WORKING FOR RAVEN, SHE DECIDED TO GIVE VISALUS A TRY. I [thought] it was just another weight loose fad. I actually lost 30lbs before I accepted that it was going to work for me. When I started the Project 10 challenge my goal was to lose 10lbs in 90 days. When I saw results instantly I was beyond excited! I lost 10lbs in 10 days and could button my size 18’s that I had not been able to wear in 6 years. Project 10 challenge also provided with a whole team of support and love through my transformation. Another huge factor was that I could help three other people and get my

product for free. I lost over 70lbs using the transformation kit and all the amazing products. I have been working out for the last 6 months consistently and along with my 2 shakes a day I have been meal prepping for 3-5 days at a time. I have now lost 101 pounds and went from a size 20 to a size 0!!!! My life is forever changed. I have become more confident and I am a better role model to my three children. As a single mom, I now have the ability and energy to take care of myself and my kids while being the active mom I have always wanted to be. I can’t even express the feeling of joy in being able to walk into a store and buy something right off the rack, putting it on and feeling amazing! As a result of Visalus my family lives a much happier and more fulfilled life. I can never express how grateful I am to Project 10 for helping me get started on the path that forever changed my life! BEING OVERWEIGHT, IT’S EASY TO NOT FEEL AS PRETTY OR AS BEAUTIFUL AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO FEEL. RAVEN HAD ALL OF THOSE SAME FEELINGS. Being overweight I constantly would feel that I was not good enough and desired to be like my friends that were prettier, skinnier, and just seemed happier. I truly believe that every woman is beautiful. Visalus has given me the opportunity to work with many others in their process of losing weight and as a result of these interactions I have discovered that society has created an unrealistic mental image of perfection. I still battle this today even after losing 101 pounds and being in the best shape of my life. Quite often, girls are made to think they have to be a certain size to be beautiful, I truly believe beauty comes from the inside. I feel that I had a beautiful heart at 220 pounds and I am still that same person, but now I feel more confident sharing my inner beauty. BEING ACTIVE WAS ALWAYS A NECESSARY PART OF RAVEN’S LIFE. I am a single mom with 3 very active kids and we are always on the go! I also work as a special education teacher and love my job, so yes I am very busy. The challenge made my life easier in so many ways. A shake took less than 2 minutes to make and I was getting 60 free meals each month. I loved saving money each month. The nutritional value is amazing and tasted so delicious that my kids also drank the

shakes. It was fast, cheap, easy healthy, food that tasted amazing. As I continued my journey and began working out I had to find time to add this to my already super busy schedule. I also was terrified of working out because I did not want to be that fat girl at the gym and I also had no idea where to start. So I joined a gym with the idea of taking small classes with instructors directing me in form and technique. I slowly began to build my confidence and began to learn new workouts. I looked at my day and found 30-45 minutes each day to devote to being active and working out!!! This is when I went from over 30% body fat to 18.1 % in 47 days. That completely changed everything. HERE’S WHY RAVEN BELIEVES THAT BEING AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT IS CRITICAL FOR EVERY WOMAN: Being healthy is not just about your weight but how you mentally feel about yourself. When you have a positive self-image your life is more positive. My family struggles with obesity and many health related issues run in my family. I knew that if I continued the unhealthy lifestyle I was living I was not going to live the life that I wanted. I was on the road to having an early heart attack, and I did not want my kids to have to worry about losing their mom at an early age. This thought continues to motivate me to become healthier every day. My three children are my “why”! DO PEOPLE TREAT HER DIFFERENTLY NOW? Yes, I am a more confident, happy person so in return people are more pleasant around me. People seem to smile more at me. I have built more meaningful relationships and continue to meet more and more people.

REACHING YOUR GOAL WEIGHT IS HARD, BUT PERSERVERANCE AND PLAIN OLD NOT GIVING UP ARE THE BEST METHODS OF ATTACK. WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, YOU NEED TO STICK IT OUT. HERE’S RAVEN’S ADVICE: People become very inspired by my story, but I am just an average mom of 3 who started making very small steps to get healthy for my kids. I want to share a little about my past so you will understand my present situation better. Before I started I was one of the unhealthiest people that I knew. I ate fast food 3 times a day and drank 5-10 cokes a day. I was not interested in getting healthy or making a lifestyle change. When I started I just wanted to get back in my size 18 jeans again. I had decided that as soon as that happened I could stop all this “diet” stuff and go back to the old me. So when I reached that goal in 10 days I actually called my brother and told him I had met my goal and no longer needed to continue the diet. He convinced me to stick with it for 90 days to see what would happen. I began to feel better and was already more confident in my clothes. In 90 days I lost 25lbs and 42 inches, I was in a size 10. I had not been in a size 10 since high school. I was extremely excited. I began making very small changes to my lifestyle to create healthier choices. For example, I began drinking 1 glass of water a day and eating half portions of what I used to eat. I had rough days and even quit a few times, but I would started back the next day. I tell people you can only quit for 1 day and you have to start back the next day. Now I eat healthy meals, I drink a gallon of water a day, and I do something active every day. This transformation did not happen overnight, it has taken me 20 months to make these changes. I set small goals that I could reach and allow me to see success. Once I reached a goal I immediately set a new one. I truly believe anyone can achieve anything as long as you don’t quit.

Wearing Sequins in 2015 by Lilly Babineau

Fashion is dynamic. Thus, the trend in terms of clothing styles change from time to time. However, if there’s one staple fashion ingredient that never goes out of style, it would be no other than wearing sequins. Sequins are tiny, shiny disks attached onto fabrics for add-on glitter and decoration. They add elegance to people’s wardrobes which makes them a must-have to any fashion aficionados. Sequins can be incorporated to all types of garments. There are sequin dress tops, sequin jackets, sequin skirts, shorts, pants, and many more to achieve that polished, glittery look. There are so much possibilities with sequins around. All it takes is a fashionable and creative mind that could unleash all the sophisticated leeway with this fashion component. The year is getting close to its end, and another year is coming over which signifies a whole new era of fashion craze. Year by year, fashion evolves and upgrades as the new generation puts more spice to it. It is surmised that the year 2015 would open a wider door for more fashion getaways that gives a high regard to wearing sequins in the most stylish manner. Wearing sequins will be the new fad in the coming year. So you better start thinking about placing more glitters to your wardrobe and shine sparkling in your own fashion runway.

Some people sing. Some people write. However, the most common way for people to express themselves is through their wardrobe. Whether you wear a baseball cap and jeans or are dressed to the nines, how you dress says a lot about who you are, your interests, and your personality. First, there’s the bold and boisterous. These outfits speak for themselves. Bright patterns, sequins and sparkles, bold colors; these outfits speak loudly and the person wearing them most likely has the personality to match. These people demand attention. They walk into a room and heads turn. That’s just how they like it. This is the kind of person that likes to take risks and put themselves out there. There’s also the organized and put together look. This outfit involves more neutral colors, more conservative cuts, and is very professional looking, perfect for the organized business man or woman. For this person, organization and order is key. Everything has a purpose or function, leaving no room for extraneous waste. They have an agenda and are sticking to it. This is the kind of person you want working in your company. Then there’s the simple yet elegant. This person wears very simple clothing, solid colors, probably a lot of black or dark colors that don’t draw attention. There are no patterns, no craziness, just basic style. This person may be softer spoken and a bit more reserved. They don’t like to draw attention to themselves, but they still have a great sense of style that makes them intriguing. You may see this person in the corner of a coffee shop, working diligently on a computer while listening to music. Lastly, there’s the comfortable athlete. This involves jeans and a baggy tshirt, possibly some workout clothes, also a baseball cap to hide some pretty awful bedhead or post workout sweathead. This person doesn’t care what anyone thinks. Fashion isn’t the number one priority. They aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. They enjoy fitness, going outside, working out, being active. This person is a lot of fun and high energy. They are the perfect person to take with you on a hike or to the gym for some extra motivation. These are just some of the ways a person can express themselves through fashion. The great thing about clothes is that they are so interchangeable that anyone can create their own style using the same 4 or 5 pieces. Your clothes make a statement, even if you aren’t trying. So what is your style saying about you?

Marco de Vincenzo’s Spring 2015 line gave us a great fully fringe pastel pink cropped separates look that will surely have the fast fashion giants like H&M and Zara scrambling to make a ready-to-wear replica. Dare to Flare Big pleated skirts with tons and tons of flare are sure to be appearing in every store window this spring! We love these trendy skirts because they give a fun, carefree, and feminine touch to any outfit. Look for them in bold floral prints, we bet you won’t be able to stop spinning! In the Flow A favorite trend of ours coming this spring will defiantly add an element of movement to your wardrobe. The use of amazingly flowy chiffon and silk-like fabrics has made a big appearance for Spring 2015. These textiles allow for beautifully draped dressed and elegant tops and skirts. White is always a colour we need to be careful with; it can, after all, collect and parade dirt very easily - but worn correctly can be refreshing and even glamorous. So, how do mere mortals without stylists achieve this? Match the shade of white to your own colouring. If you have very pale skin a bright white can leave you looking a little fatigued but an off white can highlight what colour you have, especially with carefully applied blush. A darker skin can be contrasted with a very strong white for a fresh and flattering look. There are several hundred shades of white so don’t be afraid to experiment until you find the ones that suit you the most. The colour symbolises traditional values of innocence and chastity and so is often avoided by modern women trying not to be pigeon-holed into antiquated roles who opt instead for the favourite of business black. That can be a struggle, but it doesn’t have to be. The modern woman can shine by embracing the traditional white and balancing it with strength. To really finish the ensemble - it’s all about the accessories. For true allure and sophistication the ultimate dazzling counterpart is, of course, diamonds. For those on a budget, imitation diamonds are acceptable but true diamonds add another dimension to any outfit in white. Why? It all goes back to the fact that white is not technically a colour but the absorption of all colour. Diamonds reflect that quality perfectly, which is why, in the light they seem to sparkle several different colours and add frosting to any occasion. To display them effectively a stylish up-do is best but a glimpse of their brilliance between carefully coiffed rings of hair is very appealing and adds an element of mystery. To compliment that glittering glamour add the appropriate shoes. In summer, natural or white sandals or pumps would suggest a delicacy contrasted perfectly with the hardness of the precious gems. While we may not all (sadly) be able to stretch to handmade diamond encrusted heels by Kathryn Wilson (retailing at over £250,000) there are rhinestone encrusted pumps in everyone’s budget and a good substitute are ethical diamonds which are much cheaper and manmade. Never forget to break up the monotony on an all-white outfit with a fabulously placed belt. A silver belt will add to the chic and complement the elegance of your best friends. Don’t make the mistake of over accessorising however, you don’t want to detract from your carefully placed decorations. Very importantly, have fun looking beautiful, powerful and feminine and above all - sparkle in white!

Fashion Many textiles shift in and out of popularity throughout decades, but one material that has withstood the test of time is denim. This classic, durable, fabric has created jackets, skirts, tops, and most notably the pants we all know and love: jeans. Even though denim continuously evolves, it still remains relatively the same. But do you know the best ways to style denim for every occasion? Here are a few tips on how to navigate some of the fabric’s trickier trends. In the Office: Denim has long bee classified as casual wear, but in 2015 “dressy denim” is perfect for the office. Avoid ripped and low-rise jeans at all costs and steer clear of jeans with Light -wash thighs, this trend is dated and can also create an unflattering silhouette, Instead, look for dark wash jeans that fit higher on your waist and have a slim or boot cut fit. These will look almost like slacks but will give you all the comfort you need while still being professional! Colored and Printed: Printed or coloured denim is a huge trend for warmer months, it is a great way to liven up an outfit and add a splash of colour.. When wearing coloured denim try to stick to a muted palette of pastels and neutrals, bright highlighter colours are dated and more suitable for your pre-teen daughter. Patterned jeans can also be a great way to have more fun with your wardrobe. Bold geometric patterns or subtle floral prints look great when paired with a comfy sweater or loose fitting tee. Denim on Denim: This trend is one of the trickiest to master. For years the dreaded “Canadian Tuxedo” was dubbed one of the worst fashion faux pas a girl could make. But don’t let Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s 90’s all denim suit’s haunt you! Denim on denim is a hot trend that when done right can look downright stylish. The key is mixing different tones and types of denim, a light wash chambray pant with a dark navy jean button up creates a perfect balance of casual elegance that stays true blue to the classic denim name.

Be BOLD! There has never been a better time to flirt with the idea of being bold with your look. We are seeing bold colours, bold prints, sequins and bold accessories everywhere. If you have been toying with the idea to buy that bold print sweater or a huge statement necklace take the plunge and go for it! The old rules of you mom and grandma’s days are going by the wayside. Wearing winter whites, mixing colours that don’t traditionally go together, not matching your bag with your belt with your shoes, there has never been a better time to forge your own look and style and wear it with confidence. When you have nothing to wear think of layering, spend less money and still make an impact. I have to say since the developments of Pinterest I have been seeing allot more diverse everyday looks on my computer screen than ever before. It’s not just fashionistas on the streets of New York that can show off their street style, you can take a picture of your outfit, pin it, and it can be reposted hundreds of thousands of times for other women all around to world to use as inspiration.(If you are looking for “pin-spiration” check out Pinkblits’ Pinterest page) Layering two different pieces can give your look new life without adding more clothes to your closed of more debt to your credit card, and who doesn’t want that! One of my favorite looks for this time of year is adding a fur vest to the outside of your coat. At the end of the day we all know we buy way to much clothes we don’t wear, next time you want to run to the mall, think of what’s already in your closet in a new way, your wallet and the planet will thank you. We all know that trying to take on to many New Year’s Resolutions is never going to work but with this base you are sure to have a better, more fashionable 2015.

What are the best and trendiest ways to wear a blazer?

How can I update my wardrobe without breaking the bank? Whenever you update your wardrobe or change your style you need a major game plan. I break up my wardrobe into two sections; Pieces that compliment my style and pieces that are key to representing my style. When looking for pieces that compliment your style, go to low priced yet fashionable retailers like H&M, Forever 21, Target, and the many fast fashion stores online. These stores are great to get everything from pants, jeans, trendy tee’s, and blouses which will make up most of your wardrobe. These are pieces that I feel are hard to tell whether you spent a dime or a fortune on. This way you can build the majority of your wardrobe for less. For the key pieces where quality counts you need to do your research before buying. Try going to stores like Winners and outlets and spend some serious time online shopping. You can find quality leather jackets, trenches, sweaters, and designer shoes for great prices if you take the time. When shopping on a budget it’s important to be patient so you don’t just buy any low priced item. That way you can get key pieces that will really show your style for less.

Wearing a blazer can be a great look but can go wrong very quickly. I’m loving longer and boxier blazers right now especially when worn closed with black skinny jeans or leather leggings. Pair this look with a bootie and you’ll have a seriously stylish look on your hands. If you want a more relaxed look you can always go for a classic. Wear a longer blazer with the sleeves rolled up. Pair it with a long and loose tee in black, grey, or white with a pair of skinny jeans in any color. This is a go to look that is perfect for any occasion.

of the Canadian cold when designing his 2015 collection. Either way these coats will not only keep you warm but have you looking chic to bring in the new year. OUT Peplum – The peplum had a very good run but this flared trend has burnt out. This last year the peplum was everywhere from tops to dresses but it’s now tired and time to kick it out of your closet. This year runways are looking more minimal when it comes to silhouettes. Look for more structured and fitted garments and less flared like the peplum.

What’s “In” What’s “Out” January means the beginning of a new year, new you, and most importantly a new year of seasons to dress for. I’m always about doing a refreshing (and sometime painful) clean sweep of your wardrobe to bring in the new year right. Let me help you get rid of those hanger-on trends you might have in your closet by telling you in my opinion what’s “In” and what’s “Out” for January 2015.

Cut-Out Shoulders – This is a trend that I couldn’t be happier to see go. I was never on board with this fad and I’m relieved to know the rest of the world is now with me. Too many times have I seen a chic looking blouse only to see it was ruined by having the shoulders cut out. If you feel the need to show your shoulders, wear a tank top or strapless dress. This trend kind of gave the illusion that you were busting out of your blouse in a Hulk like way. No offense to the Hulk but he definitely wasn’t the chicest of super heroes. Now Wonder Woman’s amour jewelry on the other hand is a look I can fully support.

IN Cocktail Pants – In my opinion nothing is more cocktail appropriate than a little dress, but pants are quickly rising to the cocktail occasion. A dressy and almost over the top print or shimmering pant is now the perfect attire to wear to an upscale dinner, cocktail hour, or any chic social gathering. The best way to trend carefully with these pants is to go with a damask print in a black on black or navy on navy color scheme. If you’re feeling brave, you could go with a more shimmering fabric and wide leg to stand out in a crowd. Pair either of these bold legged choices with a loose blouse in a black, white, or cream and you’ll be the center of any gathering. Sportswear – I have spoken about this trend in past issues from warmer months but sportswear is still killing it this January. Last summer we saw this trend in bright colors and neoprene fabrics. This winter we mostly see this trend in winter coats. Almost every designer has done a sportswear inspired winter coat. We’ve been seeing oversized and bright looks that are made of the sport appropriate neoprene which also acts as a good insulator. Although, I doubt Marc Jacobs was thinking

Rocking your Torso with Crop Tops by Cassidy Allan

Back in the 90’s midriff baring tops were cropping up everywhere, and girls were showing a lot more than just a tasteful amount of tummy. The Britney’s and Christina’s of the era gave us much to be woeful about when the trend began making waves again in recent years, but don’t worry, the recession of cropped tops is a far cry from denim bustiers and hot pink sports bra’s. In 2015 you can look forward to rocking crop tops from the office to the after party, and we’re here to give you all the tips you need on how to show a little skin, no matter what your size! At Work Our go to style icon for this occasion is Mindy Lahiri, the lead character of the hit show The Mindy Project. Mindy is a young, professional doctor, and is often seen wearing cropped tops around her office in AMAZING ways! The key to getting away with crop top in a professional setting is finding a balance. We love how Mindy pairs her structured t-shirt crops with high waisted pencil skirts. The high-rise fit of the skirt creates an amazing silhouette and bares just the right amount of skin, all while maintaining a sophisticated look!

What to Remember: Try not to show your bellybutton, this is where you begin to teeter on the edge of inappropriate. Instead show off the sweet spot just above your waist and below your boobs.

On the Weekend Casual crop tops allow you a little more freedom! If you’re rushing out to the grocery store or picking up your kids from practice, a loose fitting off-the-shoulder look paired with jeans creates the perfect “hot mom on the go” ensemble. What to Remember: This seasons biggest casual crop trends also center around the amazingly chic cropped turtleneck, this is another great example of how cropped tops work best when balanced with other modest elements. At Night Going out for a night of dancing with your best girlfriends is another great opportunity to show a little tummy, and this time the rules are thrown out the door (well, almost). Nighttime is a great place to bust out your cropped-bra tops and tight cropped tee’s that are super hot in the club scene. What to remember: You don’t have to always show skin to be sexy! A great compromise for a revealing cropped-bra top or boustier is to pair it with a pair of tight high waisted pants. This will accentuate your curves and allow you to dance more comfortably, what else can you ask for?!

Top Accessory trends for 2015 by Melanie McLean

Jewel Toned Baubles: Jewel tones and statement necklaces were hot in 2014 but they aren’t going anywhere. They are both flattering and fancy, and what more could you want in a trend! We’re not ready to say good bye to this duo and for 2015 they seem to be coming together more than ever. A jewel tone statement necklace can dress up a comfy sweater or a simple blazer and t-shirt combo and in a jewel tone you will definitely be on trend.

Clean Line Geometric Jewelry: Large cocktail rings and bulky bracelets are on their way out. I’m sure they will be back seeing how 99% of trends are cyclical, and they have their time and their place, but delicate clean lines are very hot for a great casual look. Triangles, bars and really any shape can be found on rings, necklaces and bracelets, go find your favorite shape from geometry class and wear it with pride.

Y Necklace: If you are a child of the 90’s like me you will remember the many many choker Y necklaces, but I’m not talking about your junior high Y necklaces. Layering isn’t always the easiest things when it comes to your accessories, you don’t want to be too matchy Sporty Accessories: We saw sportswear take the stage matchy but you want your look to be cohesive. A good near the end of 2014 and in 2015 it is breaking through way to layer your necklaces is to add a long Y necklace to the wonderful world of accessories, if you were to the mix; it adds a different silhouette/ shape and toying with the idea of dabbling with this look this is a shows off your mad layering skills. great way to dip your toe in the pool of fashion forward sportswear.

42

Chokers: If it was clear before it should be clear now, the 90’s are here baby. Chokers and tight around the neck collar necklaces are going to be huge in 2015 and if you keep your eyes peeled you will start to see them pop up all over. Be brave and ahead of the curve and try one now to see how you like them.

Floral Brooch: Before you laugh me right off the pages of this magazine, go raid your grandma’s accessories and throw a gigantic sparkly brooch and put in on your basic pea coat, and look at how fun it looks! I’m telling you it’s like a statement necklace for your outerwear. I was reading about this trend in Flare magazine and thought to myself “yeah right” and then I saw a friends of mine wearing one (someone who I never would have expected, and she was pulling it off so well!) and I thought “Oh my gosh I need one A.S.A.P!” It’s a great way to stand out in the sea of black and navy winter coats this time of year.

Itsy bitsy bags: Ladies it’s time to clean out that gigantic purse of your because the runway has spoken and it’s saying small bags are back. We saw them on the Fendi runways and even on future reality star North West (Yes Kim K bought he baby a micro Chanel purse…) I personally am excited to not throw out my right shoulder when I am out with a purse for too long.

Stackable Rings: Stacking rings is fun, and somehow it makes you feel like a rock star when you’re wearing them or Lisa Kudrow from friends (hey what can I say the 90’s are back!) wearing a petite simple band on your upper finger is very much on trend, and hey, it’s always fun to find a new part of your body to accessorise!

Accessorizing for You

by Amanda Lynch

Have you ever noticed a glow about someone who walks around with a skillfully assembled outfit that oozes of-the-minute style? A certain breed of confidence to them. They seem to glide when they walk and grin when they smile, like they are in on a juicy secret that you most certainly are not. However fashionably inclined these women and men may seem to be, doesn’t mean there isn’t hope for the rest of us to put a little kick in our step with the help of these few helpful guidelines: 1. Define your style and what you ultimately want out of your wardrobe options. You may want to modify your look to be more age appropriate, put together and polished, casual and comfortable or perhaps fun, eccentric and bold. Determining the tone of your style is a great guide to understanding what will ultimately feel like ‘you’ when you’re shopping for new items. 2. Style and personality are a kin to one another. Embrace your unique personality and let it shine through your wardrobe. We don’t all act the same so we definitely don’t all want to look the same. Opt for colours and prints that really speak to you and that make you feel good wearing them. 3. Make a priority to choose items that you feel comfortable in. This means if you have to suck it in to get into it, it’s probably not comfortable and eventually will end up sitting in your closet for the rest of its life. 4. Part of being stylish is looking at least somewhat effortless. Opt for essentials that don’t take a lot of time to put on or take off or that can quickly switch from a day time look to an evening look with just the switch of a few accessories.

44

5. Be smart about your wardrobe staples. You’ve heard this before and you will hear it again because it is great advice: Invest in the basics and go cheap on the rest. Whether it’s changes in the seasons or the trend has passed, you will never get your money’s worth out of them if you pay full dollar. Shop smart and buy the everyday items that are built to withstand much use. 6. Take pride in your body. What this means is taking the time to care for yourself to help polish and pull together your look. This includes regular manicure and pedicures you can do at home, maintaining eyebrows, skin care and keeping your hair healthy with general maintenance. Also, a little makeup goes a long way, even if it’s a sweep of mascara and lipgloss. 7. Ask yourself for guidance when you need it. We are intuitive creatures by nature and often our gut is the first to tell us what we need to know. The best questions to ask are “do i feel good in this and can i see myself loving it for a long time”, “can i freely move, sit down and bend comfortably”, “will I be perceived the way i wish to be while wearing this” and “is this item worth the money it costs to me.” Our unique identity is what ultimately will leave our personal fingerprint and a lasting impression on others, so we may as well make it a special one. Remembering to stay true to yourself and choosing options which help you feel empowered and confident from within is the best and most effective way in finding your personal style and to take your look from ordinary to extraordinary.

Relationships

Dating vs. Relationships by Angela Vincent One of the most confusing things about being in a relationship is knowing how to identify when you are actually in one. Life would be so much easier if there were a set of rules or guidelines to follow in order to seamlessly transition from "dating" into a full-blown "relationship". Unfortunately, no such magic equation exists. In fact, the factors that determine when it's time to make the leap will vary significantly from couple to couple. However, there are some basic facts about dating and serious relationships that everyone should be familiar with. Dating is the "getting to know you" phase of a relationship. This is the time when you evaluate your compatibility with and attraction to another person. There is no commitment at this stage of the game

and there should be relatively few expectations of the other person (expecting him to be respectful and not act like a total dick should go without saying). Try to avoid seeing every date as a potential springboard to the altar. Have fun, try dating different types of people, and don't overthink things. It's unreasonable to expect a phone call or text every day. At this point, it's also unreasonable to expect the other person to be dating only you. As you spend more and more time together, the conversation will start to become less neutral and more about values, wants, and goals. These are the factors that will determine whether you decide to pursue a committed relationship. If you don't see eye-to-eye on these big issues, it's a good time to honestly and respectfully tell the other person that you don't see it going any further. Also, trying to "fix" problems while dating isn't necessary. You have relatively little time invested and no major ties to this person. Feel free to say goodbye and move on. Before you can confidently say that you're in a relationship, there must be a conversation between the two of you in which you agree to exclusively see one another. Too often, hurt feelings result from misunderstandings caused by a lack of communication (e.g. One person simply assumes they are in an exclusive relationship, while the other does not). If you have not mutually agreed to be exclusive, you aren't. Period. When you are in a relationship, it's Important to discuss what your needs and expectations are. When in a serious relationship, couples don't just break up or walk away after petty arguments or disagreements. Compromise and negotiation are required to keep things running smoothly. As a side note, beware of mixed or confusing messages. If a man you're dating says that he'd prefer to keep things casual, but engages in controlling or jealous behaviour, he may want to have his cake and eat it too (date other women but keep you to himself). This type of manipulative behaviour is a good reason to move on.

Picking it Up by Angela Vincent

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of pick-up lines. They often come across as unbelievably cheesy or crude, and seem symptomatic of a complete deficiency of charm and intelligence. I think it's safe to say that the majority of women would prefer to be approached in a genuine fashion, rather than be fed lines that have been repeated to God only knows how many other women. Despite pick-up lines being largely ineffective, they are often really funny and memorable. I asked some of my girlfriends to provide examples of pick-up lines men have tried on them. The following is a list of my ten favorites. What were these guys thinking? 1. Is your mom a beaver?...Because daaaaaamn, girl! 2. On a scale of one to America, how free are you tonight? 3. How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice...Hi, I'm (name). 4. Wanna go halvsies on a baby? 5. See my friend over there? He wants to know if you think I'm cute. 6. Do you work for UPS? Because I swear I saw you staring at my package. 7. Is your name Gillette? Because you're the best a man can get. 8. Do you have a shovel in your back pocket? Because I'm digging that ass. 9. I'm going outside to make out. Care to join me? 10. You're hot and I'm ugly...Let's get together and make some average-looking babies. From Mistletoe to Midnight by Angela Vincent

Let's face it. Kissing is amazing. One of the most impressive features of the kiss is how you can convey such a vast array of feelings and messages, depending on the way that you do it. Kissing really is like a language unto itself. When and how you kiss will vary based on the situation, the level of intimacy that you're trying to create, and what exactly you're trying to "say". The following are some common types of kisses and the messages that they send. - A kiss on the cheek: This Is a polite kiss. It's appropriate for friends, relatives or significant others. It can be used as an appropriate greeting that's slightly more intimate than a handshake. It shows warmth, kindness, and caring. - A kiss on the hand: This isn't done as frequently these days as it was in years gone by, but it is generally seen as a sign of respect or reverence. A lot of older men will still greet a woman by kissing her hand. I find this incredibly charming. - A kiss on the forehead: Again, this is a type of kiss that can be given to close friends, family or to your significant other. It is somewhat more intimate than a peck on the cheek. This type of kiss gives off feelings of support, comfort, and protection.

- A French kiss: Now we're talking! Kissing with your tongues in each other's mouths can be nearly as intimate as sex, especially if the kissing is accompanied by lots of physical contact. Running your fingers through each other's hair, touching each other, pressing your bodies together. This type of kiss creates heat. Move your tongue around. Don't just lay it in his mouth like a dead slug. Also, teeth-licking is gross. Don't do it. This is not the type of kiss that you would give your partner at your kid's school play or Grandma's birthday party. This kiss is a prelude to sex. - A kiss on the neck: Gently kissing, licking, and sucking on his neck is also a type of kiss that is more suited to moments alone, as this is a very intimate, sexy type of kiss. Kissing parts of your partner's body other than the lips creates an enhanced level of intimacy. It shows your partner that you are turned on by other parts of his body. - An earlobe kiss: Well, hello! Don't attempt this maneuver unless you want to get naked. Gently licking, biting, and pulling on his earlobe with your teeth will really get him going. He'll smell you, feel your breath on his neck, hear you breathing...it really is a type of kiss that will stimulate all of his senses.

- A kiss on the lips: I'm talking closed mouth here. This is a type of kiss that you might give your partner in places where public displays of affection might be frowned upon. It shows caring and kindness. This type If kiss generally doesn't get your motor running, but creates feelings of closeness. - A full mouth kiss: We're not talking tongues here. This is simply a lingering, open-mouthed kiss. While not overtly sexual, this type of kiss can create a desire for more. This is a common public kiss. People seeing you kiss Happy New Year's or under the mistletoe shouldn't feel like they're watching porn.

Relationships

Breakups: How To Deal When a serious or long-term relationship ends, it may seem like your entire world is falling apart. It can be a time rife with uncertainty and instability, and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel may be a seemingly impossible task. There are, however, some basic dos and don'ts related to getting through the difficult days and weeks following a break-up that can make the transition from being a part of a couple to single less painful. Dos: - DO be direct about your feelings. We sometimes experience a desire to appear unaffected. This act isn't helpful. Be honest with others and with yourself about how you feel. - DO surround yourself with supportive people. Your friends and family are valuable confederates during difficult times in life, breakups included. Don't try to get through it alone. Lean on supportive people when you need to. - DO remember the bad times. Sometimes, we get so caught up in the nostalgia and happy memories that we forget the reasons why the breakup occurred in the first place. When walking down memory lane, don't forget about the giant potholes in the road. - DO take care of your health. You may have an initial desire to lock yourself away from society, lay in bed, and sustain yourself with nothing but ice cream and Doritos. Letting yourself go will only make you feel worse. Exercise, eat well, get out of the house, dress up, do your hair. You'll feel a million times better. - DO stay busy. Go out with friends, visit family, join a team, find a new hobby, or pursue new interests. The more time you spend enjoying your life, the less time you'll have to wallow in despair. - DO deal with your feelings before jumping into your next relationship. It's not fair to anyone, particularly

by Angela Vincent your next love, to drag your baggage into a new relationship. Holding the next guy accountable for your own Insecurities is a sure fire way to ensure another breakup. Make sure you're truly at peace with the past before moving on. - DO remember you are awesome. 'Nuff said. Don'ts - DON'T try to make your ex jealous. This makes you look petty and immature...and crazy. - DON'T follow his every move online. Nothing positive can come from checking his Facebook page 500 times a day. Blocking his profile in order to remove the temptation, or even taking a total social media break for awhile can keep you from obsessively checking up on him. - DON'T bad mouth him. The more you bitch and complain about what a jerk he was, the more negativity you bring Into your life. It isn't going to change anything. Find other things to talk about. - DON'T jump into bed with random guys. Moments of closeness and intimacy might seem very desirable after a breakup. However, the good feelings will be short-lived. If anything, it will make you feel worse In the long run. - DON'T drink your face off. Alcohol is a depressant. It makes you feel terrible and also increases your odds of making really stupid choices. - DON'T beg and plead to get him back. Retain your dignity. You're amazing and should never have to beg for someone's love or attention. - DON'T blame yourself. It takes two people to make or break a relationship. You are not solely responsible. You may regret certain things that you've said or done, but he likely does too. Try to learn from your mistakes and then move on.

New10Year, New Man! Ways to Kiss Your Singles Days Goodbye By Laurel House Have you been stuck in a dating dry spell? If you haven’t had a decent date with a guy in some time, chances are you are putting out some pretty non-inviting vibes- intentionally or not. It’s time to emerge from the rut and embody a sexy, sassy, seductive, attractany-guy-I-want attitude! Does that sound intimidating? Maybe even impossible? It’s not. Here’s how to get back in the groove and on your game:

doesn’t serve you anymore? Who is more of a burden? Who transformed from being a crush to just a crutch? Who makes you feel used? Who is just a booty call to you (or you are to them)? Think about… is being a booty call serving me? Is it hurting me? You’ve heard the saying that you can’t open a new door until the old door is shut. Time to clear those closets of old baggage and refresh your love life. Why? Because you deserve to be happy and fulfilled. You deserve to love and be loved. Starting now!

1. ASK YOURSELF: “WOULD I DATE ME?” I want you to ask yourself this question: “Would I date myself?” Take an honest look at who you are, how you act, what issues from your past linger in your present, do you engage in self-sabotaging activities, is your inner voice your best friend or worst enemy, are you comfortable being you, what do you stand for…? Before being ready to be in a healthy relationship, you have to focus on you first. Accept or fix your issues. Embrace your baggage. And work on becoming your best self. Once you are able to look at yourself and think “Yeah, I’d date me. I’m a pretty fantastic catch…” then do this:

4. GET A MIRROR If you can’t figure out why you keep attracting these guys who are manic, obsessive, partiers, workaholics or lacking drive and direction, look in the mirror. The people you attract are often a reflection of yourself, a mirror image. Think about if you really want a mirror image of you. Would you date yourself? Fix yourself first. Then you’ll attract a great guy- just as great as you.

2. CHANGE YOUR MIND AND YOUR HEART AND LIFE WILL FOLOW Don’t “try” to enjoy yourself. Don’t “try” to get out of your box. Just do it. Make a decision. “Trying” is a pre-emptive excuse for failure or not doing it at all. Do your best. Have zero excuses. If you don’t find success, make a midcourse correction and try a different tact. Keep at it until you do find success. 3. PUT OUT THE OLD FLAMES AND LIGHT A NEW FIRE It’s time to clear out old flames and residual baggage! Out with the old and in with the new, attractive and incredibly exciting. Think about who in your life have you been holding onto for really no reason at all? Who

58

5. GET CLEAR ON YOUR CORE VALUES Before you are truly ready to find the right guy for you, you first have to take a real, deep, hard, honest look at yourself. Who you are? What’s most important to you? Where do you stand when it comes to priorities in life? What do you stand for? …your Core Values- the values that you will not budge on. They are your foundation. Once you are clear on that, then you will better be able to decipher if your potential guy’s beliefs align with yours, if you stand on the same ground. 6. GET A LIFE You complete me is horsesh*t. You don’t want him to be the center of your universe. And he doesn’t want to be that either. “But every guy wants to be doted on by their partner…” you think. Well doting is one thing. Needy and having your world revolve around his is another. Not to mention that it’s a lot of pressure! And it’s anything but sexy.

Relationships So what is sexy? Having a life. In other words…: -You’re busy, driven, self-sufficient, and autonomous with your own interests. -You’re interesting. You have things going on that contribute to high-quality conversations. -You have something to contribute to the relationship. How do you get a life? By expanding your interests. Taking classes. Getting gout of your box. Trying 1 thing new every single day. Find your passion. Take up a hobby that excites you. Become excited about your career again. As Katy Perry says: “Stand for something, or you will fall for everything.” 7. Be “That Chick” You know that chick who enters a room and you (and everyone else) can’t help but notice her? What is it about her that attracts so much attention? What energy does she radiate? How does she carry herself? What is she wearing? What type of facial expression does she present? How does she make you feel? Generally “that chick” is smiling. She is confident. Her chin is up, shoulders back, and she makes eye contact with everyone. She is warm and invites others to be in her presence. She is deliberate with her moves, almost catlike. Instead of pushing her energy out and at you, she pulls you into hers. She might not be a natural beauty, but she takes care of herself and is well put togetherwhether she is in jeans and a t-shirt or an evening gown. I want you to get a very clear picture of “that chick” in your mind. Then write down her traits, give her a name, and finally embody that chick when you go out. 8. GET OUT THERE! - Gym junkie? Get outside and learn something new: hike, walk the boardwalk, go to the ice rink, join a snow-shoeing meet-up group. Work different muscles and have an open heart. Sweating together has been shown to initiate chemistry. - Try a new place. Instead of going to the bar where “everyone knows your name,” try a new place. Talk to people. Ask questions as if you’re a tourist--we tend to be more social when on vacation. - Take a class in a topic that doesn’t interest you. Intimidated by technology? Go to the Apple store and take one of their group classes. Enroll in a CPR class.

Try a cooking workshop. Have a positive attitude and be open to learning (and meeting someone). - Talk about what you know. Wine snob? Go to a big wine store and walk around perusing the bottles. If you see a potential partner who looks lost or confused, offer some suggestions. 9. GET ONLINE Online dating is a strategy. It requires prequalifying, specific questions asked, and profile mapping. I know it’s a “whole new dating world out there…” and I can help make it not just “less scary,” but fun. If you've never done it, you might be intimidated by it. If you've done it and had a bad experience with it, you might be repelled by it. If you believe that the best way to meet your Mr Right is "naturally" where you will have a better gauge of your chemistry before committing to a date, you might be dismissive of it. … Get over it. Online dating gives you the opportunity to date- a lot! Translation: practice makes perfect right? PLUS You will develop an Attitude of Abundance- possibly the most powerful tool. 10. GET AN ATTITUDE OF ABUNDANCE Even if you aren’t dating several guys and you really don’t have any other viable prospects, you still need to have an attitude of abundance. The operative word being “attitude.” This is about putting off the energy that, while you think this guy is fantastic and you truly do hope it works with him, there truly are plenty of fish in the sea and you can easily pull another guy just as great or better than he is if need be. An attitude of abundance is an attitude of confidence. It’s a knowing that you are a valuable commodity. Yes- you are worth something. As is your time and the energy that you put into the moment of being on this date. To clarify: an attitude of abundance is not an attitude of arrogance. It is not about juggling, screwing, messing with, or being careless with multiple minds and hearts. Sure you might be dating multiple people at once, but the purpose is to become clear with what you need and want in a partner, honing in, then making a choice. After all, how can you make a selection if you don’t have any options?

Real Life Action Hero Ky Furneaux 1) Once in an interview you were described as a fearless child, always pushing your limits... What kind of things did you do to be described as fearless? My mum always describes one incident in particular when people ask her if I've always been fearless. We got our first horse when I was seven and we didn't really know anything about buying a horse and I had never ridden before. The horse seemed calm enough but as soon as I got into the saddle the horse bolted as fast as it could go away from mum and dad. It kept going until it reached the fence at the end of the paddock where it slid to a halt. It turned quickly and bolted back the way it came sliding to a halt by mum and dad again. Mum says she feared for my safety but I was still holding on at the end and laughing with the joy of it. I also loved to climb trees and would climb so high that no one could follow. I was always game for anything. 2) Does that mean you always wanted to have the type of career you have? I didn't always want the career I have. In fact I didn't even really know that such a career existed until I was in my mid 20's. I always thought I would become a vet or a marine biologist. 3) If not, what got you interested to do this job? I was an outdoor guide as my first career and would take all types of people on adventures in the outdoors. On a school camp I was running, one of the students suggested I should be a stunt woman after a particularly rigorous game I invented involving running up and

62

down sand dunes. It sounded like a great fun job as I had always played superheroes as a kid and I thought being paid to do that would be amazing. 4) What are people’s reactions when you tell them about your job? It's one of those jobs that you always get a reaction about when you say what you do. Usually people think it's pretty cool but there are always people who think that I must be a little nuts and an adrenalin junkie. Everyone always wants to know what the hardest thing I've ever done was and how certain stars are in real life. 5) In an interview with 'The Project' you said that most actresses, if not all, take credit for the work you do. How does that make you feel? It really doesn't bother me. It comes with the territory. You definitely don't become a stunt performer for the acknowledgement of it. For me the credit is given by the director and stunt coordinator on set when you do a good job and if I have done my job properly, no one should know it's me. It is always nice though when actresses do give you credit for your work. It's just a bit of a thank you for a job well done. 6) After going through the car accident you went through at the age of 19, and then being told about your physical limitations, how did you react? I remember the exact moment when the doctor told me I wouldn't be physically active for the rest of my life. It was kind of like a movie scene - a single tear escaped and then I was so worried about how mum and

dad would feel about the whole thing, I just pretended that it was all alright. I do remember thinking at the time that I wouldn't live my life like that though. 7) What pushed you to prove the doctors wrong? I just didn't like the sound of that reality. I was motivated to prove them wrong when I found that I could push the barriers of their limitations as I healed. I listened to my body and what it was saying about what I could do rather than take what the doctors were saying as the truth. They can't always predict how one injury is going to heal over another as every individual and every injury is different. 8) What is it like to work with 'famous' people, that most people look up to? I don't think it's any different working with famous people as it is with everyone else. There are people that you like, people you get along with and people you don't. Sometimes you do feel like you have to tip toe around certain people because they are really famous but for the most part that just makes things awkward, they usually just want to be treated like everyone else. Occasionally I get a little star struck but usually not. The funniest one for me was working on a strange little low budget movie and Adam West was in it. The original Batman series was such a part of my childhood that I couldn't get over being in the same room as Batman :). 9) What are some of your favorite physical activities to do to keep in shape? Yoga is key for me. If I am flexible, then I am more likely to bend rather than break when I hit something. I then love to do some kind of cardio whether it is a boot camp or a run. I have to mix it up though because I try to train every day at least once and I don't like getting bored. My favorite of all training sessions are ones that don't feel like training such as going for a surf or rock climbing. 10) What kind of advice would you give someone who is interested in breaking into a similar career? Wow. So much advice. The first is that you really need to be passionate about this career if you are going to make it. It's not easy to break into and it's not easy to stay in. It requires dedication, training, passion and a hell of a lot of hard work. They say it usually takes about 3 to 5 years to break into the business so you need a dream funder job to do while you are pursuing

it. It also requires you to never stop learning. Some of the best people in the business have been doing it for over 50 years and they still don't know it all. Every day is different and every job is different which is also a really wonderful thing about it. Most of all though, if you really want it, go for it 100%, never give up and eventually that passion will be rewarded. 11) How scary is your job on a scale of 1-10? I think any job that you go to where you could come to some form of physical harm or death in a day is pretty scary. I don't get scared going to work any more as I believe that if it's my time, then it's my time but some days are definitely more risky than others. It's really hard to quantify but if I had to I would say it would need to be on a case to case basis. Some days 1 and some days 10 and everything in between :). 12) What was your favorite scene/movie to do? Why? At the beginning of the movie Thor there was a massive fight scene when Thor and his warriors fight the Frost Giants. It doesn't look like much in the movie but it was a massive sequence of about 100 moves and all the warriors interact with each other and the Frost Giants throughout the whole fight. It was like a dance. We all needed to be on the right beats or else the fight wouldn't work. We rehearsed it for about 3 months trying to learn how our warriors would fight and who the Frost Giants were and how they would fight. It took about a week to shoot and it was simply incredible being dressed in this cool Asgardian armor surrounded by an incredible set and a tribe of fighting people.

Laughing with Heather MacDonald 1. When did you decide you wanted to be a comedian? Who influenced the decision? In high school my music teacher told me I should be a stand up comic and skip college all together but I didn't get how strangers would ever find me funny. I finally decided to pursue comedy after getting my first real job out of USC in corporate. I then realized that I sucked at the corporate job and the one thing I was good at, being funny was my destiny. 2. Who were your inspirations in this field? People you looked up to when you first started? I was taking classes at The Groundlings Theater and for level 2 (the second class) Lisa Kudrow was my teacher. I really clicked with her. After the class ended I had to call her to see if she would pass me to level 3 and she said "Oh yeah, you're moving on. You totally get it." She left Groundlings right after that. I was her last class. She then went on to do this little pilot called "Friends". I love Lisa and the The Comeback. I also not only admire how Lisa has conducted her career but her personal life as a wife and mother.

3. Was it hard for you to find your own comedic personality? No, I always knew who I was. I was/am a sorority girl who loved making her sisters laugh. I knew as a stand up that made me different. I wasn't an "alternative hipster" like the other female comics who were popular in my 20s. Once I was married & had kids, I embraced that life and am brutally honest about it on stage now. 4. What are fan’s reactions when they meet you off stage or in the street? That I'm so much prettier in person and that boobs aren't long not do I have a cameltoe 5. In your opinion what is harder, doing stand-up, writing"You'll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again: One Woman's Painfully Funny Quest to Give It Up" or being a story producer on Chelsea Lately? Writing the books was the hardest but the most satisfying. It is just such a huge undertaking to write 14 chapters and 267 pages but when someone tells me they read my book I am blown away with joy and gratitude.

6. Which did you find most fulfilling? The books 7. What skills does it take that are different from creating stand-up versus writing content? Stand up is telling a story and setting up so the audience can follow and enjoy you telling it. When writing the books you can get in a lot more detail and descriptions. 8. In your book the 1st chapter is hilariously titled "Can’t a girl dress like a hooker, dance like a stripper, and kiss like a porn star and still be a nineteen-year-old virgin?" with this thought in mind do you feel its easier to raise your two boys than girls (hypothetically) in today’s society? No I think it is equally hard. But in light of the rape controversy happening on college campuses, I believe it is mothers of sons, like myself who have to sex talk with them and not just leave it up to the men. Our sons need to be taught by their mothers too about sex and the dangers of it. We need to teach our sons how to

protect themselves from being hurt and also never to hurt others. Sex can be very dangerous for both men and women. Men need to protect themselves so they are never put in a position where a woman could accuse them of violating. 9. Is being friends with Chelsea Handler as terrifying as it looks like it would be on T.V? Never knowing what is going to happen next or what story she would broadcast on the air? Yes is an amazing ride like a roller coaster 10. Why are there fewer women than men in comedy fields, do you have a theory or theories on that? As for stand ups, it's very hard to travel for a woman if she has kids or wants to have them. I'm so grateful for my supportive husband and mother in law for making it possible for me to have this demanding career. 11. Do you have any advice for young aspiring comedians? Find what is unique about you. Don't do what you think everyone else is doing. There is only one Lena Dunham and there is only one you.
