Arson suspected in Pine City Country Store fire BY STEVE BRIGGS BURNETT COUNTY SENTINEL

Pine County deputies and insurance company personnel are investigating a fire they believe was intentionally set in the men’s bathroom at the Pine City Country Store, a gas station/convenience store at 1120 Hillside Avenue in Pine City. The Pine City Country Store is owned and operated by Cliff and Darla Harper, also owners of the Grantsburg Country Store. Cliff Harper said the insurance investigators suspect the fire was started at the electronic hand sanitizer dispenser. The investigators said the sanitizer liquid is about 70 percent alcohol and can

catch fire when exposed to flame. After it was set afire, the sanitizer fell from its wall-mount to the floor against the wall in a corner where the fire spread into the bathroom wall, insulation, ceiling tiles, ductwork and into a second bathroom. Dense smoke filled the store and deposited black soot on ceilings, shelves, store fixtures and merchandise. “We had to close the store immediately,” Cliff Harper said. He added the insurance company brought in a professional cleanup crew, who discarded enough smoke- and fire-damaged merchandise and equipment to fill a 10-yard dumpster. “They have lot of clean-up yet to do and we will be shut down for almost two weeks,” said Harper. They

‘Someone is going to pay for it. The insurance company will probably go after the suspects or their parents’ Cliff Harper Pine City Country Store co-owner hope to re-open the Pine City Country Store on Friday, April 21. The Harpers said authorities have identified one or more young male suspects who were observed at the scene of the fire, which occurred about 4 p.m. Monday, April 10.

Fire and smoke damaged both bathrooms enough that they had to be demolished and replaced, Darla Harper said. The insurance investigators estimated structural damages at $60-70,000, plus another $30-40,000 in lost merchandise. She said insurance will help cover business losses in addition to the repair and cleanup expenses. Pine City Fire Department extinguished and investigated the fire. They were assisted in their investigation by Pine County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal. “Someone is going to pay for it,” Cliff Harper said. “The insurance company will probably go after the suspects or their parents.”

Pine County studies youth alcohol use BY AILENE CROUP NEWS@PINECITYMN.COM

Lynette Forbes-Cardey, with Pine County Health and Human Services (HHS), gave county commissioners an update on planning and implementation grant projects and activities. The project and activities associated with the grant are directed toward reduction of youth alcohol use in East Central and Hinckley-Finlayson School Districts, according to the April 4 regular meeting minutes. Forbes-Cardey is on the board of the Pine County Chemical Health Coalition (PCCHC), which has been meeting monthly, and includes representatives from the two school districts. Commissioners approved the minutes of the March PCCHC meeting as part of the consent agenda. A Positive Community Norms survey was completed at both high schools with 70 percent participation, Forbes-Cardey outlined in her progress update. Students from both schools also attended a Youth Leadership Academy which was funded by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division. Planning is underway to complete 50 one-to-one interviews to get community input on underage drinking and substance abuse. Forbes-Cardey suggested contacting media, health care professionals, business people and schools in the interview process. The grant also requires development of vision and principles.

She said a community informational dinner and meeting will be held Thursday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Hinckley-Finlayson High School. Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by discussion at 6:15 p.m. The March PCCHC meeting included these attendees and members of the coalition: Jamie Welton - Hazelden, Jessica Blesener - Essentia Health, Joe Dvorak - FirstLight Health System, Jen Rancour - Pine Technical and Community College, Jenilee Telander - Regional Prevention Coordinator, Commissioners Matt Ludwig and John Mikrot Jr., Pine County Chief Deputy Paul Widenstrom, Lynette Kuzel Teen Focus Recovery Center, Monica Haglund - Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Pine County Probation Director Terry Fawcett, Kelly Anderson - Empower Recovery Services, Phyllis Bengston - Department of Human Service Community Member and Becky Foss and Janet Schumacher from Pine County HHS. IN OTHER BUSINESS Pine County Board has scheduled a special meeting of the Committee of the Whole to discuss the county’s highway projects, budget, and will culminate with a tour of roads in the Hinckley area. The special meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 25 at the Pine County Courthouse, at 10 a.m. The meeting will continue as the board reconvenes aboard a bus for the road review.

Artists brighten Pine Healthcare Campus The North Pine Area Hospital District is building a state-of-the art Pine Healthcare Campus in Sandstone, and including the healing power of professional art in the decor of the facility. Four of the artists are from the local area and the fifth is from Wisconsin. Carole Bersin (pictured above) and Patrick Ring are teaming up to do four painted panels intersected and enhanced by three stained glass panels. The entire piece will run 41 feet in length and be five feet tall. Carole did extensive research of the area and relied a great deal on the Sandstone History Museum and many long-time residents of the area for background on Dr. Dredge, the Blood Bank, Indian history and culture and much more. Each of Carole’s four painted panels will tell the story of health care from the pioneer days of Pine County to the Pine Healthcare Campus. Dr. Homer P. Dredge, a pioneer Pine County physician is prominently portrayed in one panel along with a view of the first X-ray machine. Another health care leader is Miss Mabel Donlin who organized the Pine County Blood Bank which was a major contributor of blood for soldiers during World War II. She received the Army-Navy E award for outstanding war effort because of this work.

Transportation funding helps Pine County The Minnesota House has approved transportation funding legislation that will provide $6 billion to statewide road and bridge needs over the next ten years without raising taxes. There’s no doubt we should invest in road and bridge improvements, and this bill proves we can do this in a significant way without forcing drivers to pay more at the pump. The proposal creates a new fund of existing tax revenue streams called the Transportation Priorities Fund. This new State fund uses current, transportation-related state tax revenues House to make the new investment for Jason roads and bridges. Additionally, the transporRarick tation proposal would permanently fund the popular Small Cities Road Assistance Program, which provides a state revenue stream to cities with fewer than 5,000 residents in order to make needed street repairs. How would this proposal benefit local cities? PINE COUNTY Askov: $9,808 Brook Park: $8,207 Bruno: $7,535 Denham: $6,573 Finlayson: $10,878 Henriette: $7,885 Hinckley: $27,881 Kerrick: $7,366 Pine City: $37,078 Rock Creek: $44,497 Rutledge: $10,537 Sandstone: $35,337 Sturgeon Lake: $14,920 Willow River: $12,104 KANABEC COUNTY Mora: $46,383 Grasston: $7,363 Quamba: $8,598 Another provision worth noting: in County State Aid Highway funding, by 2021 Pine County is estimated to receive $3.35 million more than its 2017 allotment, while Kanabec County is expected to collect an additional $1.3 million.

Senate Republicans passing irresponsible budgets Republicans routinely run on being fiscally responsible. With the recent Republican takeover of the Minnesota State Senate I anticipated cuts in spending. However, the state budget put forward by the Republican majority doesn’t cut spending, rather it pushes spending into the future putting Minnesotans on the hook for debts that should be paid on time, particularly in a time of a budget surplus. This is going to seriously jeopardize the state’s long-term fiscal health. One example of this fiscally irresponsible practice is in the Senate Tax Bill. This bill costs $900 million this State budget cycle but it isn’t something Senator you pay just one time. The state will continue to lose at least $1.1 billion in Tony each upcoming budget cycle largely due to ongoing business tax cuts. This Lourey means that we are cutting taxes with money the state does not have. Another example is the Health and Human Services Budget Bill. This bill postpones $454 million of payments Minnesota clearly owes into the next budget cycle so it appears like we are spending less in this budget. Not paying bills on time isn’t an option for your family, and it shouldn’t be an option for the state. Aside from irresponsible budgeting, the budget as currently designed by the Republicans also does not invest in things Minnesotans care about. The Education Budget Bill does not invest enough money in schools and many school districts are worried about being forced to cut programing and teachers in order to make ends meet. The Tax Bill’s investment in Local Government Aid (LGA), while it increases for one

year, actually penalizes many communities in the future, cutting up to $13,000 worth of aid for individual cities in our region starting in 2019. While the Senate Republicans do include $400 million for transportation funding, this investment is done largely with a one-time use of general funds cut from other spending priorities. Transportation investments need to be made in a sustainable, ongoing manner to support our aging transportation system and adequately support the needs of the state and local road systems now and into the future. The $400 million proposal will not be enough for the state to maintain existing roads. Without a dedicated source of funding, transportation will constantly be in competition with students, the elderly and disabled and all other spending priorities. The principle of having constitutionally dedicated transportation funding has served Minnesota well for decades. To abandon it now is short sighted and will cause disruption for many years to come. The current Senate Budget proposal is simply not responsible. Minnesota has a budget surplus of $1.65 billion. We should be paying our bills and making thoughtful, sustainable investments that will benefit all of Minnesota, not ignoring the needs of working class Minnesotans. Feel free to contact me if you want to learn more about what is in the budget and why I think it’s important we run our state in a fiscally responsible manner.

Spring is sprouting at Pine City Cooperative Nursery School, where the youngsters lavish tender loving care on their Mother’s Day plantings. Calvin Cook, Timmy Caza, Tommy Caza and Michelle Bisset were busy caring for the little plants they were growing. Eight-year-old Shaun French of Rock Creek suffered minor injuries when he was struck by a car while crossing County Road 102 in Rock Creek. He was treated and released at the Rush City Hospital. The driver of the car, Harold Hendrickson, Rush City, was not injured. Fred Route, of the Pine City Lions

Club, has been designated a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions International Foundation in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community. The Pine City track teams traveled to Princeton for a quadrangular meet with the Tigers, Sauk Rapids and Sartel. Although the weather was cold and windy, the young Dragons performed well in this early season competition. Top relay finishers in the meet for the girls were the 800 meter relay team of Suzie Misel, Chelsey Koppen, Stephanie Wiechmann and Robin Schimming which took second with a time of 1:5751 and the 400-meter relay team of Christine Kroeze, Wiechmann, Koppen and Misel with a time of 56.61 seconds.

The club has done considerable work on the roads near Pine City and a great deal more will be done throughout the year. All thanks to the Pine City Automobile Club for this fine spirit. By the number of “queer” circulars received by some of our prominent businessmen, one would imagine that the manufacturers of counterfeit paper and coin money had overestimated the number of the genus home popularly known as “suckers.” Of course, the recipients of these circulars in Pine City are too level-headed to take stock in any such gauzy scheme.

50 Years Ago, 1969 William Erhart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albrecht Erhart of Pine City, was notified recently that he has been selected as a “County 4-H Horticultural Achievement Winner.”

Empty rumors cause many Pine City students to stay home on Monday, April 17 BY MIKE GAINOR EDITOR@PINECITYMN.COM

After an incident in the school lunchroom on April 13, rumors circulating on social media led many Pine City High School parents to keep their kids home from school on April 17. Pine City High School Principal Troy Anderson said that the incident at school involved one upset student shouting loudly at another student during the lunch hour on Thursday, April 13. Anderson, who was in the lunchroom at the time, stressed that the confrontation was not physical, and that no one was struck or injured. Soon after, however, stories began to circulate on social media that the confrontation was violent, and that threats were made of violence against students. Anderson said that he first heard about the rumors on Thursday afternoon. “The first thing that I did was to make sure I got in contact with law enforcement first ... so they could follow up,” Anderson said. Anderson said he continued to work

with law enforcement on Friday and Saturday, and checked himself to see if the rumors had any basis in fact. The investigation by law enforcement and Anderson’s own research turned up nothing. “We felt like there wasn’t any direct threat,” he said. At that point, both the Pine County Sheriff’s Office and Pine City School District put out statements and emails. The Pine County Sheriff’s Office said they had investigated the rumored threat, but it had no basis in fact: “At no time was a threat of violence made to the students or staff of the Pine City High School that involved guns or explosives. Should an actual threat of this nature have been made, parents, students and staff should know that our office would have investigated the matter and taken all appropriate action to ensure the safety of everyone. As always we will work with the school districts to always ensure the safety of every student.” The sheriff’s office stated that deputies would be present at the school on Monday morning to assist school officials

with any lingering questions or safety concerns students, staff or the general public may have. The message from the school district noted that the school’s safety protocols include all doors being locked all day at school buildings, and that visitors must be buzzed in and buzzed out at reception. Anderson said that both he and Pine City Schools Superintendent Annette Freiheit were expecting a response from parents, but that response did not come. “Neither of us heard from a single person after that,” he said. “Not one email.” But despite this attempt to debunk the rumors, many parents allowed their children to stay home on Monday. Pine City High School staff report that 170 students did not attend school on Monday, April 17, though some of those were not at school for health or other reasons. Anderson said he and two deputies stood at the entrance of the school to greet students and parents on Monday. Otherwise, he said, it was a normal day, as was Tuesday. “We’re back to school as usual here,” he said.

SPRING CLEAN UP IN PINE CITY Pine City’s annual Spring Clean Up is scheduled for Monday, April 24. Leaves and branches need to be at the curbside by 5 a.m. on Monday, April 24 for pickup by Public Works employees. Leaves must be bagged and tied. Tree branches must be bundled in 4’ lengths.

NEW DOG LICENSING REQUIREMENTS Effective June 1, new regulations will go into effect which require reoccurring licensing of dogs within the city limits of Pine City. City officials say licensing is needed to prevent the occurrence and spread of rabies, aid in enforcement of nuisances and complaints, and provide a database to help city staff to return dogs to their rightful owners. These new requirements include license renewals based upon the duration of the dog’s rabies vaccination. Licenses will be renewed upon certifying that vaccinations are up to date. Licenses will be available at City Hall and Pine City veterinary offices at a cost of $10 per license per dog. For questions, contact the City Administration Office at 320-629-2575 or in person at 315 Main Street S, Suite 100 or via email at info@pinecitygov. com.

Dragons get win against Gobblers, now 2-0 BY JESSE LOGAN SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM

Pine City’s boys tennis team played just one match last week, but earned a hard-fought victory against a solid Gobblers squad. The Dragons got the win on the road on Tuesday, April 11 to move their season record to 2-0. PINE CITY 4, AITKIN 3 Pine City earned two of its points in singles play and two of its points in doubles play on the afternoon. First singles player Santiago Ospino cruised through his match (6-2, 6-0) easily remaining undefeated. In fourth singles, freshman Tanner Wicktor continued to impress with a come-frombehind victory (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). Also scoring points for the Dragons were second and third doubles. Dusty Bergstrom teamed with Beau Steele to earn a nice win at second doubles (6-1, 6-1), while Jake Lindblom and Alex Laven teamed up for a three-set win (5-7, 6-3, 6-4) at third doubles. “We got on the board first with a dominating win by second doubles,” recalled head coach Rick Engelstad. “Beau and Dustin played extremely well together. They did a fantastic job of moving

together and cutting off shots. Aitkin gained the next two points with wins at second and third singles but our third doubles team, Jacob and Alex, evened the match at 2-2. These two did a nice job of regrouping, especially being down 3-0 in the third set.” The Dragons moved ahead 3-2 after Wicktor’s win, and would seal it with Ospino’s victory. “Tanner Wicktor out-battled his opponent at fourth singles,” added Engelstad, “battling back after losing the first set. He is determined and will work at hitting one more ball than his opponent. The match-clinching point came at first singles from Santiago, who won in straight-sets, in convincing fashion. He has a fun game to watch. A very nice win for the boys. But it was also a good learning tool for us; we have some areas that we really need to work on.” After a bit of a slow week with only one match, the Dragons will have a very busy schedule in the coming seven days. Pine City was scheduled to face Hermantown on Tuesday, has Foley coming to town on Thursday, and will host the Pine City Invite on Saturday.

Basketball team celebrates winning-est record in nine seasons BY JESSE LOGAN SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM

Pine City’s boys basketball team put a wrap on their season on Sunday, April 2 at a team awards banquet held in the seventh grade commons at the high school. The Dragons celebrated the winning-est ever season under sixth-year head coach Kyle Allen. Pine City finished 22-7 overall, and had a deeper playoff run than the school had experienced in nine seasons. “Really thought that we grew a lot this season,” said Allen. “We were playing our best basketball at the end. A testament to the coaching staff and the kids. Jason (Rademacher) and Wayne (Hansmann) did a great job, junior high coaches Larry (Britton) and Monte (Petersen) did a great job there, and our scouts David (Jackson) and Mike (O’Donnell) were a huge help too. Proud of the growth of the boys and the program throughout the season. I thought we attacked the things we needed to in terms of our weaknesses and the boys really made that happen. The growth of the boys over the year was something that really stands out.” On this night, the players watched a highlight video of the season and also a lengthy feature piece that Fox 9 News had done on the team after they were featured in the Wall Street Journal. Team awards were passed out and four players were recognized as either All Conference or All Conference Honorable Mention. Earning the most awards on the night was Jake Rademacher, a team captain. “Roddy” took home two team awards including Team MVP and the Dragon Award. Rademacher finished his junior season averaging 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while also leading the team in assists. Rademacher was also on the All Section team. “Roddy,” said Allen, “he was our leader, he was our rally guy. Always did what was needed and was top three in almost every statistical category. Jake had the knack of getting the big rebound, hitting the big shot or getting an assist. His game really took off this year. Clay Logan received All Conference distinction and was named as the team’s Offensive Player of the Year for averaging a team-high 16 points per game while shooting the highest 3-point percentage on the team. Logan made 58 shots from down-

town. His 80.2 percent mark from the free throw line was impressive, and he made nearly twice as many free throws (81) as anyone else on the squad (41). Logan was also on the All Section team. “Clay is a phenomenal high school scorer,” said Allen. “He had some huge individual games, inside and out, he’s a great shooter and in the offseason he added the ability to penetrate. He stepped up down the stretch and played big in the playoff games, so I was really proud of his development.” The third player to receive All Conference distinction was Nick Hansmann, a sophomore who also finished second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game. Hansmann led the Dragons in made three pointers with 88. Hansmann was also awarded the Hustle Award. “Nick came on the second half of the season,” added Allen. “His shooting and his athleticism is big for us. He’s got a lot of potential. He can score the ball and is learning how to take over the game in other facets, in terms of his rebounding and defense. I’m excited to see what he does in the next six to nine months with basketball.” Jake Lunceford earned All Conference Honorable Mention and team Defensive Player of the Year as well as having made the All Tournament team over the winter break at Cloquet. Senior Captain Austin Hansmann received the Teammate Award. Seth Logan was named the Most Improved and Konnor Jusczak was awarded the Eye Opener. Allen thanked his seniors and put the whole season in perspective. “The two seniors,” Allen noted, “Austin and Adam Seals, were two guys who’ve been with me for awhile. They were always team first and were ready to do what the team needed. They won a lot of games in their high school career. On the season I’m proud of all of the boys. We came up short on the goal of putting a year on the banner, but got 20 wins in the regular season, first in my tenure, so I’m proud of the boys and the accomplishment of that. When we talk about goals, we talk about winning, we want to win games, so 22 wins and getting to the sub-section championship game was a great accomplishment. Beating Braham in Braham (first time in over a decade). It was a special season.” Allen will now move forward with a 22-win team that will return all of its starters and its top weapons. The future looks bright for the Dragons.

Title: Dragons softball earns first win of the season, now 1-4 Result: Won 10-7 over East Central, lost 11-1 against Isle Where/When: At home vs Eagles on April 11, and vs Isle on April 13 What happened: The Dragons came out ready to hit against East Central and chalked up eight hits in the game. The biggest play of the contest was Genoa Gregg’s bases-clearing double, with three RBIs. The seniors on the squad made a big impact as well, with Gracen Gerold entering the game to pinch hit and hitting a double with an RBI, and Katherine Rike hitting a triple and scoring on a poor throw from the outfielder, earning an inside-the-park home run. Unfortunately in their next outing, the Dragons had trouble kickstarting the offense, and suffered too many errors against a tough Husky squad to be competitive. What it means: The Dragons have gotten their first victory of the season, but will need to play more consistently to stack up a few more wins. Up next: A busy upcoming week sees the team was scheduled to travel to Braham on Tuesday, April 18 before hosting a home game against Aitkin on Thursday, April 20. Pine City will play a pair of games in Mora on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.

Track and Field kick into high gear BY JESSE LOGAN SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM

Kicking into high gear, Pine City’s track and field teams had two competitions this past week and again posted great results. The Dragons girls team won both times out, while the boys earned a first place finish at one meet and a runner-up finish at the other. The Dragons started their week with a strong showing at the Rush City Invite on Tuesday, April 11. “The weather was cool but sunny,” explained Dragons head coach Jared Clementson. “Rush City said they had at least two inches of snow on the track in the morning but everything melted by the time we arrived. Some of our athletes used this meet to try different events.” Pine City’s girls earned first place in team standings with 173 points, which was 63 points ahead of second place East Central. Elsie Lundquist was the Dragons’ top scorer with 22 points. Natalie Cahill scored 21, Alexis Pankonin scored 20, Kelsey Erickson scored 17, and Alaina Steele, Alexis Thieman and Grace Langmade each scored 16 points. Elsie Lundquist won the 100m hurdles in a time of 16.4 and high jump with a height of 5’ 0”. She also tried the 1600m and 800m races out for the first time where she placed fifth in the 800m (3:13). Other winners included Kelsey Erickson, who won the triple jump (29’ 9”) in her first time trying the event. Lydia Adams won the 1600m for

the third time this season (5:58.5), and Marin Foss won the 3200m (13:20). Natalie Cahill had a great day as she took second in the 100m hurdles (19.0) and long jump (13’ 5.5”), and fourth in triple jump (28’ 8”). Cahill also tried the 1600m for the first time where she placed sixth. The team had a solid showing in the field events as well, led by Alexis Pankonin, who took second in the shot put (30’ 4.5”) and discus (90’ 7”). Third place finishers included Ashli Webster in the 3200m (13:47), Alaina Steele in the 200m dash (29.1), Lauren Sommer in the 400m (71.8), Alexis Thieman in the 800m (2:54.1), and Grace Langmade in the 300m hurdles (55.8), her first time trying the event. The girls relay teams also had a strong showing as the team won the 4x800 relay (11:06) with a lineup of Langmade, Grace Grubbs, Leah Westerman and Steele, and also won the 4x200m relay (2:01:2) with a foursome of Kensi Tayerle, Allyson Chromey, Alexis Thieman and Aaleaha Thieman. Taking second place in the 4x100m relay (55.6) was a team consisting of Kaylee Prihoda, Alexis Thieman, Kelsey Erickson and Ellaina Johnson. Pine City’s boys also walked away with a first place finish, scoring 169.5 points, 44 points ahead of host Rush City. The Dragons’ top scorer was Adam Seals with 36, followed by Aaron Pulkrabek with 24, Eli Grubbs with 20 and Remington Steele

and Tommy Ryan with 18 points apiece. Pulkrabek won the 100m dash (11.6) and the long jump (19’ 4”), while also placing second in the triple jump (37’ 2.25”) and third in the 400m (58.9). Seals won the triple jump (37’ 5”) and the high jump (5’ 4”), and also placed second in the 100m (11.8) and 200m dash (25.6). Grubbs won the 3200m in a time of 10:37.0 with Ryan coming in second with a time of 11:00. Adam Archambault won the pole vault with a height of 11’ 6” with Logan Schaaf (9’ 6”) coming in third. The Dragons boys had the winning 4x800m relay (8:55.5) team consisting of Steele, Austin Eck-

ert, Grubbs and Ryan. Impressively, the boys also had the winning 4x400m relay (3:54.8) with the same lineup, and all but Steele ran the 3200m just five minutes prior to the start of the relay. Second place finishers included Steele in the 800m (2:17.1) and Riley Palmer in the 400m (57.2). A few days later, Pine City would run again at a meet in Ogilvie. The “Deb Brennan Memorial” Invite took place on April 13. Pine City’s girls won with 146 points, 23.5 points ahead of Mille Lacs, while the boys team took second with 144 points, behind MooseLake Willow River’s 152. “We rested many of our higher point scorers,” ex-

Luke Murphy and Ryan Gamec-Bromberg had a strong start to our golf season with a win at our home invitational scramble. Even with the rough weather, they managed to shoot a 66. These two will help lead our team to what will hopefully be a very successful season.

Also finishing first for the boys was Ryan, who won the 1600m in 5:02.2, as well as Grubbs in the 800m in 2:05.7, Seals in the high jump in 5’ 8”, and Archambault in the pole vault in 10’ 6”. The 4x100m relay of Pulkrabek, Seals, West and Haskovec won in a season’s best time of 46.3. The 4x400m relay of West, Steele, Ryan and Grubbs won in a time of 3:48.4.

plained Clementenson. “Or we may have only had them doing a few events due to a few factors such as illness, injury prevention and or food poisoning.” Lundquist was the standout again on the girls side, winning the 100m hurdles in 16.9, triple jump in 29’ 6”, and high jump with a height of 5’ 2”. Steele won the 400m in 64.5 seconds, and Pankonin won the discus with a personal best throw of 100’ 1.5”. The 4x400m relay of Langmade, Grubbs, Adams and Steele won in a time of 4:32.5. The boys got a first place finish out of Brandon Haskovec, who won the 100m dash in 11.6.

Pine City’s golf team is under new direction this year, and has gotten its season underway. The team played a pair of home scrambles last week as they continue to work through the early portion of the season. The Dragons boys hosted their scramble on Monday, April 10, while the girls’ scramble was postponed a day due to snow. The girls played on Wednesday, April 12. “We had some less than ideal weather for the boys’ first event of the year,” said head coach Adam Jensen. “But we are glad that we were able to get it in before the snow started to fly. All teams played well considering the weather conditions that were a big factor in the event.” All in all, there were 11 schools participating in this event, and the Dragons came away with a second place finish as they shot a respectable 142. Chisago Lakes finished first with 137, five strokes ahead of

Pine City. Foley came in third with a 147, Braham in fourth with a 148, while Aitkin, Rush City and North Branch tied for fifth with 150. Barnum finished eighth, Mille Lacs ninth, Hinckley-Finlayson 10th and Moose Lake-Willow River 11th to round out the field. Individual awards were handed out to the top three individual pairs for the day, and the Pine City pairing of Ryan Gamec and Luke Murphy took first, shooting a 66, just edging a tandem from Chisago Lakes for the top spot. A pairing from Foley finished third. The girls’ event was scheduled for the following day, but mother nature had other plans. “The girls’ meet ended up being postponed by a day because of a late snowfall that made the course unplayable,” explained Jensen. “Luckily it was only a one day postponement. Sadly, due to the delay, not all of the originally committed teams could make it to the new date, but the teams that were there had good weather and lots of fun.”

The nice weather led to some nice scores from many of the teams, and the Dragons girls finished fifth, shooting a 171. Cambridge-Isanti took first place as a team with a combined score of 163, while Crosby-Ironton and Chisago Lakes tied for second with 168. Foley finished fourth with a 170. Mille Lacs was a distant sixth with 182, followed by Rush City in seventh, Duluth Marshall in eighth, Moose Lake-Willow River in ninth and Braham in tenth. Despite decent showings their first time out, the Dragons have much to work on in their games. The season is young, and the team is working. “Our focus is on improvement,” said Jensen. “We want to strive to be a little better every day.” The Dragons’ next competition would come in the form of a Great River Conference meet at Rush City on Tuesday, April 18, with the girls slated to play a day later at Milaca.

Baseball team gets first taste of victory, times 2 BY JESSE LOGAN SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM

The Dragons baseball team got their first taste of victory this spring, and went 2-0 this past week. Now owners of a winning record, their victories came in the second and third games of the season. The Dragons started their week with a win over East Central, and added another victory later in the week against the Isle Huskies.

PINE CITY 16, EAST CENTRAL 6 (5 INNINGS) Pine City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, led 6-1 after the second, and blew the game open with a five-run inning in the third. The afternoon was highlighted by excellent pitching from Jake Rademacher who struck out eight while only walking one. At the plate, Austin Hansmann was 3-3 with three RBIs. Pine City’s bats were cracking as they racked up 13 hits in the contest, which was stopped after five innings. Brendan Westbrook also had three hits, Nick Hansmann and Jake Lunceford had two, while Rademacher, Isaiah Gonyea and Drew Steele also had hits. The game was played at home on Tuesday, April 11. Two nights later the Dragons would add another victory, albeit in a much tighter contest.

PINE CITY 8, ISLE 7 (8 INNINGS) After ending the game early two nights prior, the Dragons would need ex-

tra innings to move their record to 2-1 on the season. Pine City trailed 6-0 after the top of the fifth inning, but scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth to climb back into the contest. “The entire team did a great job of playing hard throughout the entire game,” said head coach Monty Petersen. “So many guys were coming up with big hits and plays.” The bottom of the eighth started with backto-back hits by Lunceford and Rademacher, and was decided moments later. Senior Austin Hansmann had a base hit to right field and the speedy Lunceford was able to make it home just in time. The throw came in to the plate but the Isle catcher was unable to dig it out, and the Dragons had earned the victory. Rademacher had three hits, while Lunceford and Westbrook had two apiece. Austin Hansmann’s lone hit was the game winner, but Nick Hansmann also had a hit, as did Gonyea, Carter Utecht and Duke Waxberg. The Hansmanns combined to allow 10 hits with seven strikeouts in the win. On Monday, April 17, Pine City would lose 10-7 to Crosby-Ironton to fall to 2-2 on the year. Full coverage in next week’s edition of the Pioneer.

Girls basketball team recalls tremendous season BY JESSE LOGAN SPORTS@PINECITYMN.COM

The girls basketball team celebrated one of the best seasons in program history at their awards banquet. The C-squad, JV and varsity won a combined 61 games this winter and broke nine team records as well as several other individual records in the process. The Dragons finished 23-5 overall. “It was a great year for the Dragon girls basketball program,” said head coach Ted Hasz. “We will definitely miss our seniors; senior player Katherine Rike and senior manager Natasha Petschke were very important in our improvement as a program.” The Dragons broke team records in wins (23, previous record was 19 in 1988-89), points scored (1,776), 3-pointers made (146), 3-pointers attempted (566), as well as field goals made and attempted, steals per game and free throws made. The Dragons also recognized various players with section and conference distinctions. Leading the way were Grace Langmade and Lily Wilson, who made both All Section and All

Conference. Alison Brown made All Conference. All Conference Honorable Mention went to Hannah Lorsung. The team won the All State Academic Silver award for cumulative GPA as well. Wilson set individual records with 3-pointers attempted and made when she connected on 119 of 440 shots from downtown. Wilson also set the Dragons’ single season record for assists with 125. Brown also set a new team record for field goal percentage in a season with 60 percent and currently is on pace to set that same record for a career with 55.5 percent from the field. Ellie Hasz also had a record tying effort in a game for free throw percentage when she went 10-10 in a single game, tying Janine Mettling from 1987-88. All in all, it was a tremendous year for the Dragons girls basketball program. Losing just one senior from the rotation, the Dragons look primed for a multiyear run of success. “The squad looks to be in great shape for years to come with all of the kids that are returning next year and beyond,” added Hasz. “But it is still going to take another great offseason in order to meet our goals for next year.”

Westbrook played with teammates from Hill Murray, White Bear Lake, Centennial, Woodbury, Champlin Park, Blaine, St. Paul Academy, Maple Grove, St. Paul Johnson, Minnehaha Academy, Totino Grace and Chisago Lakes. The tournament featured a very high level of play and Westbrook’s team took home the hardware after a few very intense days on the ice. Dragons varsity coach Grant Nicoll was also honored by being asked to coach one of the teams. The two enjoyed the whole event and an opportunity to rub elbows with pro, Division 1, top junior, and Division 3 coaches and scouts all weekend.

Girl Scouts make community better It has been the goal of local Girl Scout leaders to teach the girls of Cadette Girl Scout Troop #54034 (7th graders) to volunteer and give back to the community. This year the troop used a portion of their cookie sale proceeds to purchase items for the “A Place For You” homeless shelter, and also personally brought in items to donate. In February they prepared a spaghetti dinner for the shelter, something they have done for the last three years. The adult leaders are very proud of these young women and all they have done this year.

Where in the world is the Pioneer? The annual duck-hunting trip to Tisdale, Saskatchewan in Canada last October was more challenging than usual for these Pine City pals and their Pioneer, with approximately 8-10 inches of snow on the ground. Pictured are (l-r): Ed Schumacher, Rob Arola, Mike Tatarynovich, Dave Arola and Andy Arola. Readers can show their Pine City pride by submitting pictures of themselves with their hometown paper in exotic locations around the world. Send all photos to: editor@pinecitymn.com.

Local farmer wins $2,500 for charity HANDS FOR PINE CITY

Nettie France was surprised by a call this February. It came from Monsanto, the company she and her husband Ed buy soybeans from. “Ed signs us up for every drawing he can find – and they picked my name,” Nettie said. The Monsanto Fund is the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company and each year they offer the chance for a farmer to win $2,500 to direct to their favorite local

nonprofit organization. The name of the grant is America’s Farmers Grow Communities. Nettie picked Hands for Pine City, a local church that exists to be the hands of Jesus to the city. Hands for Pine City will use that gift to help feed hungry kids this summer. Starting June 5, students going into 5th-12th grades will meet Mondays and Thursdays at noon to eat a meal they cook followed by fun activities focused on nutrition, gardening and the arts. At 3 p.m.

the students will meet back together to share their adventures and get a back pack of food to practice cooking at home. The program will run through Aug. 24 and will be free to any student currently in the back pack program or eligible for free or reduced lunches. The program is called Summer Food & Fun. To join as a volunteer call Julie Samuelson at 320-496-3009. Those interested in registering a student may call David Jackson at the Pine City School District at 320-629-4122.
