Ute Pass book unveiled, book-signing planned May 28 By Pat Hill pathill@yourpeaknews.com

Midland. The book signing for Volume I is from noon to 3 p.m. May 28 at Crystola Roadhouse. The book retails for $22.

In the changing landscape of Ute Pass, the rich history of the area could be lost if it weren’t for a few people determined to keep the story alive. Five of them have collaborated on “Discovering Ute Pass: Volume 1,” which brings to life the development of Cascade, Chipita Park, Green Mountain Falls and Crystola in the mid-1800s. Produced and published by the Ute Pass Historical Society, the book is scheduled for release this month, followed by a book signing May 28 at Crystola Roadhouse. “This book was begun in 2010; in a sense this is part of a set,” said Claudia Eley, who with Mary Ann Davis, Larry Black, Judy Perkins and Jean Taylor, wrote the book. “Each of us would work on something that was extra interesting to us.” While each writer has a personal or generational connection to Ute Pass history, they also relied on recorded interviews and written testimony, each a part of the archives at the historical society in Woodland Park. “We include the personal stories and anecdotes from people who are no longer around,” said Perkins, who is the office manager of the historical society. “We spent hours at my desk.” Indeed, the society, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, began with recorded interviews by local historian Jan Pettit. In the past several years, Black has continued the oral tradition begun by Pettit, who donated her collections to the society. For readers looking for familiar names, the book’s index is a “who’s who” of people who shared their family stories and photos. With five experts on the area, the book grew to what would certainly be a cumbersome length, perhaps 2,000 pages, Davis said. “At some point, Mary Ann and I broke off because we had so much on Green Mountain Falls,” said Eley who, with Davis, published “Green Mountain Falls,” in 2013. “That’s how out book came about, from this one.” As an ongoing set, Volume II covers the history of Upper Ute Pass, picking up the westward journey at Woodland Park and continuing through Edlowe, Divide and
