Sam Levy continued to make history on Sept. 19 when he qualified for his second consecutive state golf tournament, making him the first Woodland Park High School student to accomplish the feat. “This was my goal and I got the job done and put the city of Woodland Park on the map,” said Levy, a senior, shortly after completing his regional round at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo. “I battled all day and made the shots when I needed to. It wasn’t my prettiest round.” Levy fired an 8-over par 78 on the 6,669-yard course. He finished eighth overall among all golfers at the Class 4A regional. He had a 41 on the front nine and 37 on the back. Levy was the lone Woodland Park golfer to qualify for the state tournament, which was to be played Sept. 26-27 at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale. Results will be published in next week’s Courier. The other Woodland Park golfers who played in the regional were junior Jace Cisneros (86), freshman Joey Babin (87) and junior Shane Purkey (88). The cutoff point to qualify for state was 85. “I’m proud of our guys,” said Woodland Park coach

Brian Gustafson. “They all played well today. It’s tough when you get to regionals. Everyone you’re playing with is pretty good.” Discovery Canyon senior Owen Pasvogel won the regional with a 71. Pasvogel’s teammate Luke Trujillo and Pueblo County’s Drew Egan also shot 71s, but Pasvogel won the playoff when he sank a 40-foot putt on the first hole. Discovery Canyon won the regional team title. Pueblo County also qualified for state as a team. Levy and Gustafson headed to Carbondale on Sept. 24 to get settled. Levy played a practice round at River Valley Ranch on Sept. 25. Levy’s first round at state was to began on the 10th hole on Sept. 26. “The biggest thing I take away from state last year is to live in the moment,” Levy said. “Just have fun and play. “Last year I was trying to do too much and I let things get to me.” Levy is the only senior on this year’s team. “We have a lot of eighth graders who are younger brothers of some of our golfers and they are also course rats,” Gustafson said. “The guys we had this year are excited about being pushed by those younger guys. “I think the future of Woodland Park golf is very bright.”

Ribbon cut on new Grassy Valley Mining Overlook By Pat Hill pathill@yourpeaknews.com Nearly a year after it startled many Teller County residents with news it was closing the American Eagles Overlook, Newmont Mining Co. delivered on its promise this week to replace it with a new tourist attraction overlooking mine operations. The company hosted a reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Sept. 27, to launch the Grassy Valley Mining Overlook on County Road 82 between Colorado Highway 67 and County Road 81. “The new overlook provides a dynamic view of modern mining operations along with a scenic view of the historic area known as Grassy Valley,” said Brad Poulson, in a release sent in August when the site was selected. “This excellent location is only a quarter-mile east of one of Newmont’s CC&V’s historic mining preservation sites known as the Hoosier Complex.” The Hoosier is the trailhead for the Gold Camp Trail through Cripple Creek’s Poverty Gulch. The Grassy Valley site is farther from Victor than the American Eagles was located. Residents there were particularly upset when it was closed, noting it was a magnet for people who then stopped in the historic mining town to buy antiques, visit museums, get something to eat and otherwise spend money. The closing of American Eagles came just a few months after Newmont purchased the mine from Anglo Gold Ashanti last year. While Newmont officials cited safety concerns for the closure, the people countered by citing tradition and the historical relevance of the overlook. After Newmont announced the location of Grassy Valley in August, Teller County Commissioner Marc Dettenrie-

der expressed disappointment that the location is farther away from Victor. Months before Newmont closed the overlook, Ruth Zalewski, co-founder of Southern Teller County Focus Group, emphasized the structure’s role in attracting tourists to the area. However, Zalewski greeted the new location with a positive reaction in August, noting the focus group had reviewed Newmont’s plans for the Grassy Valley Mining Overlook. She declared the group “fully supports the establishment of the overlook on County Road 82.” “People can also get an up-close view of CC&V’s modern mining operations that are offered through the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum during the summer months,” she said. “Mining operations have always been a fascination of visitors as well as locals.” Recognizing the angst that the change caused in the community, Newmont promised to relocate American Eagles’s historic structure to what they deem a safer spot. In the meantime, the mine announced that it had spent $40,000 to preserve and stabilize the structure. Along with the ceremony and reception Sept. 27, Newmont included an invitation to watch the mine’s heavy equipment at work.

Help the Needy stretches a small budget a long way By Pat Hill pathill@yourpeaknews.com Gas cards, monthly rents, utility payments, clothing, medical bills, car repairs, name an emergency and Help the Needy responds with temporary aid. Founded 34 years ago by Greg Schilling of Woodland Park, the nonprofit organization is run entirely by volunteers, including the chief executive officer. “In any given month, we have about 35 volunteers who donate 6,000 hours during the year,” said CEO Vince Scarlata. In addition to offering a hand-up to their clients, the volunteers score points by hosting a food booth at Cruise above the Clouds car show in September. “I made meatballs this year,” Scarlata said. Attracted by the fragrance of homemade goodies, cookies and chili, for instance, customers helped the

organization gross more than $3,200 this month. Scarlata credits Newmont Mining Co., owners of the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co., for their role in sponsoring the booth. In addition to Newmont, Help the Needy’s major donors are Vanguard Skin Specialists and Exostrategies, Inc. The latter two are major sponsors of the annual Sweetheart Ball, which is Feb. 11 this year. As a result of the two fundraisers, along with grants and donations, Help the Needy assisted 350 adults and 160 children in 2015. “We’re doing very well, actually,” Scarlata said. The primary need this year is rent or mortgage payments, followed by utilities. “We also have the wood program where last year we cut, split and delivered more than 100 cords of wood to people in need,” Scarlata said. “Newmont/CCV is giv-

ing us trees cut from their property.” Help the Needy’s work includes helping clients develop a budget and finance plan, through the “Get Well” program. “Some people come back after awhile – they get in trouble again,, beyond their control,” Scarlata said. “If it’s warranted, we’ll help them.” Help the Needy’s annual budget is $125,000, 80 percent of which is spent on helping clients while the other 20 percent is for operations and mortgage payments on the land and infrastructure of the building at Center and Henrietta streets. Several years ago, Peoples National Bank donated the building. To expand their reach, Help the Needy collaborates with other nonprofit agencies in Teller County. For information, call 687-7273.

No marshal, maybe town manager for Green Mountain Falls By Pat Hill pathill@yourpeaknews.com

The search remains fluid when it comes to finding a new marshal for the town of Green Mountain Falls. Last week, the town was close on zeroing in on a candidate. At the last minute, however, town officials discovered the man was not suitable for the position. “It’s not the news we wanted,” said Mayor Jane Newberry at the board meeting Sept. 20. However, on the cross-your-fingers side of news in the mountain community, the search for a town manager is narrowing completion. After exiting from an executive session, the board announced that it had agreed to offer the

six-month interim position to a candidate. The confirmed announcement is expected this week. In other news, the town agreed to increase the franchise fee to the town from 4 to 5 percent. “This is a fee that is passed on to the public when they pay their natural gas bill,” Newberry said, referring to the fee paid through Black Hills Energy. For the town, the extra 1 percent would generate an extra $3,000 a year, from $12,000 to 15,000, said mayor pro tem Cameron Thorne. Trustee Tyler Stevens balked. “As cash-strapped as we are, I think we as a town government need to ask for and state why we need the increase –

just have a more open discussion about it,” he said. “I’d like to see the money – we need it – but I don’t think this is the right way to go about it.” The increase will only affect the residents, and that, chiefly during the winter, said Willie Alexander. “My natural gas bill was $15 this summer,” he said. “You’re not going to make any money off me.” The increase would probably be about $20 a year for the residents, said Katharine Guthrie, from the audience. The fee increase is not a tax increase, said Mac Pitrone, former trustee. The trustees approved the increase on a 5-1 vote; Stevens voted no.

Paralympians showed the world we are all the same The word “Paralympic” derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or Guest Columnist alongside) and the word “Olympic.” Its meaning is that the Paralympics are the parallel to the Olympics and illustrates how the two movements coexist. Like the Olympic Games that preceded them, the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the third-largest sporting event in the world, recently ended, but their legacy will remain forever. During the 11 days of competition of the Paralympics in Rio, 4,350 participating athletes from more than 150 countries from all five continents defied expectations by achieving athletic success and showing the world what they can do instead of what they cannot do. Paralympic athletes were not content with just winning medals at the games. They sought to set Paralympic and world records in their names and for their countries.
