32. tuscan workshop Processional cross 16th century silver-plated cast bronze; 36 26 cm Church of San Salvatore (inv. 23) The cross lacks the Crucified Christ and is decorated only on the front with a border that runs along the edge. At the ends of the arms there are four small poly-lobed plaques that contain the Eternal Father (above), the Virgin (to the left), Saint John the Baptist (to the right) and the Magdalene (at the bottom). The typology of this object began to spread in Tuscany beginning in the 15th century and also persisted well into the following century, as often happens in the case of minor art objects with liturgical or devotional uses that remain more easily tied to traditional stylistic formulas. This explains the doubts regarding the dating that have been raised by scholars who over time have studied this work (Dal Poggetto opts for a mid-15th century date; Caterina Proto Pisani prefers to place it in the following century.) 33. tuscan production Binding set end of 19th century velvet and silver; 36 26 7.5 cm Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista (inv. 47)
