House of Piero della Francesca in Sansepolcro
La Casa di Piero della Francesca, che sorge a pochi metri dal Museo Civico di Sansepolcro, era la residenza di famiglia dei Franceschi e fu costruita fondendo edifici preesistenti, probabilmente su progetto dello stesso Piero che ne dipinse la facciata sullo sfondo della Prova della Vera Croce nella cappella Bacci ad Arezzo. Sino al 1903 vi si conservava l’Ercole attribuito a Piero che, staccato, fu venduto ad Elia Volpi e poi finì a Boston all’Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Sede della Fondazione Piero della Francesca, con la sua biblioteca specializzata e il centro di documentazione e di studi sul Rinascimento, conserva anche una serie di preziose incisioni, in particolare di Cherubino Alberti – allievo a Roma del famoso incisore Cornelis Cort –, di Schiaminossi e del Cantagallina. Piero’s della Francesca House is a few metres from the Civic Museum of Sansepolcro and was the Franceschi family’s residence. It was made by merging existing buildings, probably on a design by Piero himself who painted its facade in the background of the fresco with the Proof of the True Cross in the Bacci Chapel in Arezzo. The Hercules attributed to Piero was preserved there until 1903 when it was detached and sold to Elia Volpi, to later end up at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. It is the seat of the Piero della Francesca Foundation, with its specialized library and its documentation and Renaissance studies center, it also houses a number of valuable engravings, in particular by Cherubino Alberti, a pupil in Rome of the famous engraver Cornelis Cort; by Schiaminossi; and by Cantagallina.
