edaesua.santi.mccccxxxvi; under the side panels: savs.andreas.apolvs savs.ihoas.battista savs.iacobvs.apolvs savs.antonivs.abbs Church of Sant’Andrea a Ripalta The large altarpiece looks particularly sumptuous also thanks to the elaborate frame which subdivides it into a polyptych, and has little tortile columns, phytomorphic friezes and hanging arches as well as a predella. It was carried out as a 1436 commission from Bernardo Serristori for the Church of Sant’Andrea in Ripalta, as can be seen from the inscription at the base of the center panel. It was removed from that church some years ago for reasons of security. The artist worked in the traditionalist workshop of Bicci di Lorenzo from 1423-1424; he was documented in Pisa with Masaccio in 1426, a working relationship that did not fail to influence Andrea’s painting. He was an eclectic painter, also receptive to the body of work by Lorenzo Monaco and to the fascination of Fra Angelico, of whose culture Longhi judged him an «unrefined interpreter». If, in fact, the influence of Fra Angelico is most evident in the central figures of the altarpiece, there are clear references to Masaccio and Masolino in the predella, with evident allusions also to the Brancacci Chapel. Andrea’s striking great chromatic richness and profusion of gold, still late Gothic, create again, particularly in the central scene, the elegance and splendors of a celestial court transferred to earth.
