ESCAPE PODSphoto by Caroline Luu creds Brennen Abille

Escape pods. cars were our escape pods it was where we could touch each other as if we had suddenly entered an airbnb for the weekend how jealous we were of drivers with tinted windows that protected their privacy wherever they travelled stroking the back of your neck and the ends of your hair reminded me that you were real and your tiny bald dot reminded me that you were human the music we played danced from genre to genre yet we loved to break down the lyrics as if we were critiquing art connecting the lines it drew into our lives i stopped getting angry when we missed an exit or turned right instead of left because i still got those two mixed up the more lost we were the more time we had in our escape pod embarking on a journey that belonged only to us just you and me me and you. now my car no longer feels like an escape but a reminder of what used to be our little home

poems by Israel Lepiz

I‘m typing away The whole day Strokes on a keyboard That get me nowhere But help me make it till months end She said its the same but shes 20 She says its the same for her but shes healthy She didnt expect it to take her nowhere But now its more than a job its helping

When I once took form I committed the crime of befriending all human sensations As my sentence of damnation began I was robbed of memory impulses wither removed from exposure to memory In hell --by name yes by name I am a blister attached to the beast dumb of pride I am its prized deformation. The Dumb of pride and the dunce of humility; In his wisdom, comedy-divine never without great defeats of mortal will; referred to commonly in my previous entrapment as the iron within me. It may have been perfectly inconsequential to blush then Here the only Red is the red that seeps 4

Listen UP

bigbag 5.1.19 || Oakland

Up first: Running Away Zebra by Tom Baire with Isabel, Gilbert, Josh and Edan. This soft and steady tune make a true lullaby. Songs #2-4 is written by our friend Austin a.k.a. DJ linkz. There’s a lowkey and subtle punch in crraazzy’s beat. Etheral humming and syrupy-slow tones rock throughout Diana and linkz’s song, #3 on our list. And nite market, takes your ears and mind on a ride on spaceship through time. Saturday is an instrumental piece where Tom’s guitar and song writing shines. #sadcooljazz. In track #6, a couple teams up to create Is Coo, a diddy and toast to college and youthful day dreaming. Next, is dondon. He had our hearts since RTF days/TUE$DAY NIGHT$ [ON DECK]. His songs and remixes, listed #7-11, reveal a strong variety of sounds, tempos and moods. Formula One and Guano, both originals, showcase baselines reminiscent of goth and cyber-punk inspired hip-hop. Chopped and not slopped, Ay Baybay remixed, is a mellow but still danceable version of its parent. Dondon gets crafty on his remix of You’re a Jerk. And finally, Don’t You Cry, caps off this playlist. The track is dreamy, solem and gratifying.

We are so excited to hear more from these local, independent, self-taught, talented and soulful individuals. Tune in to their work by eading to the playlist page at soundcloud.com/andie_nguyen/sets/bay-kids Readers of Piano Recital, may I present the following: 1. repping an open house gallery and zine fest looked a little like this: decorating here, hauling things from my room to Oakland there, dusting off my underappreciated instagram story and, whew, feeling the need to sing and dance the stress off. If you’ve ever hosted a party, you’d know where I’m coming from. That December weekend on the 22nd and 23rd, 2019, support and love felt endless. I’d like to thank you all of you who 16

came through. It would have not been possible without y’all, your kind words, cheers, and good faith. Elise, upon arriving as the first guest, took my shots for IG and videos of Jasmine and I dancing after our first sale. While posting more snaps, the Tus pulled up, and unnexpectedly Doni and her parents then Mary our friend from school who we know is dank. Caroline and Justin, dressed fabulously as usual, graced us with their visit while heading from alameda to emeryville.
