Zamboanga Sibugay 2nd District Board Member, Datu Wilborne Danda and Tungawan Vice-Mayor, Abduraup Abison, also graced the said event. Danda said that the Provincial Government is also exerting efforts to implement its thrust on education and assured the people of Tungawan that his support will always be there for his fellow Sibugaynons. 20

“I will personally find ways to intensify our drive to eradicate illiteracy in our province and rest assured that the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay will support the programs of the DepEd and the LGUs for the betterment of the people”, said Danda. Based from reports gathered, Tungawan is the only municipality in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay that celebrated the Literacy Week considering the large number of illiterates in the municipality and being a place where majority of the various cultural minorities live.

In the Philippines, September 2-8 every year is declared as the country’s observation of Literacy Week based from a memorandum circular from the Office of the President. Following the said mandate, the municipality of Tungawan celebrated the Literacy Week 2011 by gathering different sectors to witness the program facilitated by the Local Government Unit (LGU) and by the personnel of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd).
