The Senator’s view on today’s everyday Tourism situation: “It’s easy to say that our tourism industry is progressing well but who knows - one day if we are not careful, Phuket may no longer be a favoured tourist destination because we neglected to take care of its natural beauty”. Before adding, “When talking about today’s tourism industry it is important to talk about the other side of the coin and the recession that can follow prosperity. Phuket still needs a large budget to improve its public utilities and infrastructure. We need to focus on environmental problems in particular waste management, land usage, and road traffic congestion. For these are fundamental factors which need attention given the number of people who are now reliant on Phuket’s resources”.

Phuket tourism with Khun Tunyaratt Achariyachai: Chairman of the Standing Committee on Tourism for the Senate Our own Province Phuket appointed Khun Tunyaratt Achariyachai during the senate election of March 2, 2008 and she now undertakes the position of: Chairman of the Standing Committee on Tourism for the Senate. For this issue, Phuketindex.com was delighted to get the chance to talk with Khun Tunyaratt about her outlook for Phuket’s tourism. The Senator’s view on her role in Thailand’s and Phuket’s Tourism industry: In my role as a Senator, Khun Tunayaratt told us “We don’t actually have contact with the tourism industry directly but are more involved with the legislative and administrative side of controlling the states affairs”. However, due to her extensive background in the hotel and tourism industry Khun Tunayaratt and the other members of the committee like to pay special attention to the area of tourism. Indeed she states, “I think the days of taking a backseat and observing

The statistics for the numbers of travellers coming to Phuket has been significantly increasing every year. Subsequently if the political situation in the country remains under control, we calculate that the number of travellers visiting from all over the world will reach 6 million and undoubtedly keep growing year by year”. In response to this growth rate Khun Tunyaratt reveals “We are going to get a budget to renovate our international airport for 2010, after completing the international airport expansion will be able to support up to 11 million travellers a year which will be a great advantage for Phuket’s tourism industry”. Nevertheless the Senator cautions: “I’m really worried about land usage and purchasing. It’s true that the property business is booming but we have to keep it in perspective. I think it’s important to preserve the land for our young, if we sell it off, where will they live?” The Senator continues ‘…in order to make Phuket a sustainable tourism destination.’ “We have to look after our natural environment, take care of hygiene, cleanliness and safety. We should never forget one of the main reasons we earn from the tourism industry is because of the good Thai hospitality we provide. For this reason tourists come to see us over and over again”. Finally Khun Tunayaratt has a message for Phuket’s entrepreneurs and invertors, “The majority of you come here and gain something from Phuket; if it is possible it would be nice if you could give something back. Tanit Chutipongpattanakul Owner Baan Rommai Several weeks ago Phuketindex.com had the opportunity to meet up with Khun Tanit Chutipongpattanakul owner of Baan Rommai – during our informal chat Khun Tanit mused; “I like to stay behind the scenes rather than stand in the spotlight. Only a few people here know that I’m the project owner, most think I’m only an engineer.” We therefore thought you might like to hear a bit more! Background Khun Tanit is not a Phuketian nor from Bangkok, but is actually from Chacherngsao, a Province in the East of Thailand. Like many aspiring individuals he went to Thailand’s capital city to gain a better education. After Khun Tanit got his bachelor degree for Electrical Engineering from King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, he took a position in the Engineering Division at Berli Jucker Public Company Ltd. A company at the very forefront of Thailand’s trading, manufacturing and servicing fields. After working for the company for a few years Khun Tanit decided that he would like to be his own boss. Onset in Business Talking to Khun Tanit for half an hour we learn he started his Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Engineering business under the name ‘E 24’ which is also the mother company of Baan Rommai, before developing into a full construction business. His construction business mostly caters to Kiatnakin’s customers [Kiatnakin is a Thai registered securities company] since it is here he has good business connections.

‘E 24’ handles many building projects in the Bangkok area including Citybank’s head office, HSBC’s head office, Credit Suisse First Boston Securities (Thailand), Standard Charter’s head office, ABN AMRO (Asia), as well as the first 20 branches of Makro. Following such illustrious contracts Khun Tanit was able to break into the Phuket market and his clients here include among others the Three Dolphins Resort, Katamanda Resort, and Trisara. Becoming a developer Baan Rommai represents Khun Tanit’s first personal residential development project in Phuket and was inspired by an incident involving the exaggerated costs associated with living around Phuket’s beaches. He enlightens us “One day several years ago, we worked for a beachside project

and one of my staff was exhausted so he went to get a bottle of soft drink having 15 baht in his pocket. Unfortunately the bottle he wanted cost 50 baht even though its actual cost was only 5 baht and my worker went without due to unfair ‘tourist’ pricing.” This incident inspired Khun Tanit to think about a reasonably priced project, which could be built for Thai residents and workers. “I want to build a competitive, value for money projects” he states. On his company name “It’s a homage to my closeness to nature” said Khun Tanit who informs us he was brought up among ‘green fields’ since his family are farmers and therefore he tries to remain true to his roots. Meanwhile his development company is named “Baan Rommai Chailay” because it is a combination of

‘Rommai’ meaning ‘tree shade’ and ‘Chailay’ meaning ‘seaside’ which is indicative of Phuket. Design concepts Khun Tanit’s projects are built along the three predominant factors in his life: “I am a Chinese descendent, I am not local, and I am a sportsman”. Regarding the first point Khun Tanit tells us he is from a Chinese family (like many Phuketians), and lived in a row house (the likes of which can be seen now on Debuk road) during his childhood. However, progressing from his roots Khun Tanit now wishes to live in an open and airy place and this provides the rationale for his projects’ location. Secondly Khun Tanit tells us because he is not local, but comes here to work, he is simply the same as others who are subjected to the increased costs of living associated with a tourist resort and the largely unfair prices. For this reason he has decided to offer reasonably priced homes in order to buck the trend and cater to people who cannot afford the unfair disparity with other places in Thailand. Finally as he is a sportsman he uses a sports analogy, to explain his direct approach; “When I use a swimming pool that means I go swimming, not for a dip. I use a straight swimming pool. For a true swimmer does not like ‘free form’ pools” Such is also his approach to business.

On reasonable project costs Khun Tanit tells us “Because I have knowledge and experience in construction it means I am able to control costs and cope with inflation. Nevertheless, if you have an engineering background and know the construction costs in Phuket, you will still wonder how we can survive when you see what we have done and the price we charge! On Phuket’s setbacks Khun Tanit has seen off; SARS, Bird Flu, and the Tsunami but what he worries about most is Thailand’s political situation and the people’s demonstrations. ‘It is not a natural disaster’ he advises ‘but it is if we make it one’.

His personal motto “It’s easy, I never take advantage of others and I prefer to help others financially rather than make merit.” And a final wish? Humorously parodying Thai beauty queens though serious in what he says Khun Tanit states “I want peace in Thailand” adding “not only for Thailand but also for my business as well.” Supremely confident in his projects’ Khun Tanit believes if the Thai political situation progresses favourably so will his projects.

Dr. Sarawut Tepsuparangsikul Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) - Phuket Cosmetic Dental Clinic Dr. Sarawut Tepsuparangsikul has been at practice in his private clinic since 1994. For after 8 years of general clinical experience he and his two friends hit upon an idea; “Why don’t we launch something new? Why don’t we offer patients an enhanced cosmetic dental service? What’s more we can do it together – so it will be like back when we were studying!” This idea led to the fruition of what is now Phuket Cosmetic Dental Clinic. Dr. Sarawut graduated from Chulalongkorn University Dental School in Bangkok, Thailand. Initially his career started with two years experience as a general practitioner in dentistry at Tappud Government Hospital Phang-Nga Province. Of this time he informs us “I am one of the 3rd generation that the government sent to the countryside for improving dental innovation in the community. I am proud of what I achieved at that time because it was more than just treating patients: I acted as a PR officer for the hospital and helped inform the local people about the hospital. You must remember at this time rural people believed that it was only possible to ‘pull a tooth’ in the city!” One of the main reasons Dr. Sarawut is interested in dentistry is because throughout Thai history the profession has been associated with honour and has provided a stable job with good benefits. Regarding the clinic’s background, Dr. Sarawut tells us “My friends and I dreamt of making a difference. So Dr. Sriyada Palimapun Shinawatra (DDS), Dr. Jurairat Lorsiripat (DDS) – Orthodontist

and I established Phuket Cosmetic Dental Clinic.” continuing “We want our clinic to be different and diverse. We have set up a dental clinic but not in the traditional sense or style. You will immediately recognise this if you visit from the decoration and location of our clinic. It does not look like a dental clinic, or a place where you would be afraid of dental care.” After advising us of this fact Dr. Sarawut invites us to have a look round and we impressed with how calming and relaxing the surgery feels. With the advent of the modern age and the importance people place on looking good ‘Dental Beauty’ has become an industry in itself. Indeed Dr. Sarawut states “It is great people are taking time to look good – not only for their dental beauty but also for their

health. The new generation are aesthetically aware – it’s different from their parents’ era as they are not afraid to come to a dental clinic when they have toothache and often say ‘just pull it out’. But they all want to look good after!” The launch of Dr. Sarawut’s company however was not without its trials and tribulations. Indeed, Dr. Sarawut was forced to create brand awareness and reputation largely by himself for he tells us “We, dentists, aren’t allowed to push marketing strategies due to the law. Accordingly, we have to build our reputations from what we offer. We benefit from feedback and most of that comes from word of mouth referrals” Dr. Sarawut and his team have employed a tactic of using ‘Clear Information & Explanations’ in order to build up a reliable reputation.

“We inform our patients about any problems, we notify our patients clearly about the cost of treatment and also we have a ‘no pressure’ policy regarding whether the patient seeks treatment with us. We give them time to make up their minds. We are just happy to be one of their options. This is better than not being an option at all.” Furthermore, Dr. Sarawut advises that there are three factors which patients remember his clinic for: ‘Location, Quality and Service’ explaining further; “We use high quality dental equipments – the latest in modern technology. Our service has the same standard as any ‘high class’ hospital and we even have round trip transfers for our clients. Regarding the location, we choose this spot intentionally because it’s not located on the main street. For we do not want our clients disturbed by noise and prefer that they feel good and relax.” On a personal level Dr. Sarawut is interested in the ‘Arts’ and has actually applied some of this to his dental treatments. ‘It’s like an artist creating works on a canvas. I just create ‘art’ in a patients’ mouth!’ It is not surprising therefore that we learn if Dr. Sarawut had not been a dentist he would have been an Architect. Indeed during his study period, he sometimes wished he had more time to learn about architecture but there was no time during his 6 year dentistry course.

Nevertheless he informs us ‘I still hope, (if I have time one day) that I may have the chance to open my own design studio.” Finally Dr. Sarawut tells us “I just hope that people will take a look at themselves – and not just regarding dental care. One tip is; if you only spend 30 seconds brushing your tooth, try and spend another 30 seconds. Also if you never work out - try it. When I cook I’m happy. It’s not just happiness however as it has become my passion – even though I learnt to cook a little bit late in life!

or this column in the first issue of Phuketindex.com we spoke with a ‘Thai Seafood Fusion Chef’ about his cooking style. In this issue we speak with an equally interesting culinary connoisseur; a foreign female chef from Baba Dining Lounge at Sri panwa.

Miss Keonhwa Lee or ‘Connie’ as we were asked to call her, is originally from Korea though Connie informs us ‘At first, cooking was my hobby but now it’s my job’ we are surprised to learn that Connie prior to becoming a chef studied and worked for many years in the field of psychology. Indeed Connie tells us it was not easy pursuing her dream of becoming a chef because despite her love of cooking, her parents held traditional ways of thinking and

wanted their daughter to become a teacher or doctor. In short like many Asian parents they expected their daughter to undertake a job associated with ‘dignity and respect’. Resultantly after many discussions with her parents Connie chose to solve the matter herself, by contacting and applying to join a culinary arts course at a Hotel School in Switzerland. A country renowned as a world leader for providing service and hospitality. The course entailed studying for one full year in school followed by another full year’s practical training during which time she learnt about all aspects of cookery. Connie informs us that “Despite the fact that it was very tough studying there, they taught me everything including how to make the job easier by working cleverly.” Connie’s current career however began one day when by chance she met Sri panwa’s Sous Chef - Jimmy. It was a chance meeting that would lead to Connie flying to Phuket and becoming a chef

at Baba Dining Lounge where she is responsible for hot kitchen, cold kitchen and pastries. “I’m interested in the cold section area; appetizer, salad, etc. I work on the details of it, the decoration” Connie informs us when we asked her about her cooking style. Initially however, for the first few months Connie tells us that she did not find life easy, as she faced problems with language and communication. “It was a struggle at the start; but after working with the others for a while it becomes easier. Now we stick together and gradually we learn to understand each other’s methods”. Connie has now overcome the initial difficulties having worked at Baba Dining Lounge for nine months, so we asked her what she thought was next? “After I gain enough experience, I would like to be a teacher, I want to teach people how to cook” Connie informs us - a sentiment that obviously epitomizes her love of cookery. Finally Connie told us for her, being a Chef is akin to what she was taught in school “Passion, Patience and Pride”. On the 26th December 2004 however, as we all know, a Tsunami hit Thailand’s Andaman coast. As a result the Savoey’s structure was largely destroyed, but with a great deal of local help and assistance the Savoey was able to open again only 10 days later. Indeed, the Savoey re-opened on the 5th January 2005 amidst the shards and wreckage of the Tsunamis’ terrible wake despite having only 30% facilities and operational readiness. In doing so the Savoey represented the first business on Beach road back in operation and sent out an important message for the local economy; they expressed to the public that they were ready to welcome tourists back! An essential factor in helping Patong’s tourism industry to recover. Following on from the disaster of 2004, and S.T.P. Group expanded further with the opening of Beach Way Coffee Shop in September 2005, followed by Concaved Restaurant in October of the same year. A couple of years later and a serving outlet at the their beach unit the ‘Beach House’ has opened supporting customers over flow from Savoey Seafood Restaurant. Savoey’s Executive Chef - Chef Pan offered a few words of wisdom regarding the reason for Savoey’s popularity: “We are not the first seafood restaurant open here, but we are a pioneer in this region undoubtedly.” said Chef Pan proudly “It is our food and service that makes us stronger than others” he told us, before adding “We are always concerned about standard, freshness, cleanliness, and taste. If you read the applicable press, you will know that in 8 years the capacity of Phuket will increase by 77% which means in the next 8-10 years, you are going to see Phuket change like never before; with more overseas investors looking at buildings, villas, condos, luxury hotels, restaurants, bars, golf courses, fun parks and with this comes entertainment and a little more overseas influence”. Continuing: “I have talked to some customers who bought property on the island in the past and got a great return on their investment. There are not too many places in the world that give you the opportunity to buy something today and get a great return tomorrow. That’s why I believe Blue Hill Condo Patong is an important consideration for future investment and a perfect location for living here in the heart of Patong.” said Paddy. However Paddy opined: “Residentially it is not easy to buy here in Thailand for foreigners because of the property law. Most foreigners

Phuketindex.com was therefore honoured to talk with Khun Patrick Catellani who is the developer behind the upcoming project; Kata Ocean View Phase 3. Born in Italy Patrick Catellani provokes a surprised with the fact that he has a degree in chemistry. Hardly the standard resume for becoming a successful developer! Patrick continues ‘My background is actually in boats, it’s the reason why I settled in Thailand’ On first visiting Thailand Khun Patrick tells us he felt very privileged as he was introduced to a number of investors who believed in him. ‘I ran a boat building company for a while before moving into the construction field’ Khun Patrick tells us before continuing; “It’s my passion and it is in my blood as my father has been in this business many years. However, after the Tsunami hit the Andaman Coast, the boat business declined, so we were forced to look for a more secure investment. History has taught us that land bricks and mortar are a secure investment.” On asking about Kata Ocean View Condominiums, Khun Patrick tells us “We are now working on Kata Ocean View Condominium Phase 3 which has been underway two months. It will be completed by February 2010” On completion the project will comprise 21 units of 1 or 2 bedroom condominiums with lounges, western standard kitchens and a private pool. The concept of the project is stylish and simply elegant: Designed, with clear lines, white colours and an abundance of glass, Khun Patrick states “It’s our idea to create something which is well integrated with the environment and complements the natural aspect of our location in Kata Hills.”

When we ask why Khun Patrick chose Kata for his project location, he advised us; “I like Kata, it is very convenient, and you have everything here; a beach, food, shops and many other facilities. Kata is a place for families with kids; for example IT professionals love Kata because is quiet and they can work on their balconies and enjoy stunning ocean view.” Adding that his project is designed “for every one whether they live here year round or they came to Thailand for a couple of months each year and looking for a secure investment” Indeed, he continues “We offer rental programs for owners so in the months of the year when they are not here they can still earn from their investment.” As this interview goes to press economies around the world are facing economic crises on an unprecedented scale. Thailand faced a similar situation eleven years ago, when regardless of the quality of a project many developers went bust. With this in mind we asked

Khun Patrick what he thought of the situation. He tells us ‘We are still confident in Thailand’s potential, due the fact that its financial institutions are well set to meet buyers and developers needs’. Before adding; “In my experience, if there is something wrong with the overseas market, people normally withdraw their money from the stock exchange and look for another place to invest it. In such a time of upheaval the property market in Thailand represents a very good opportunity to invest money, as it is still relatively undervalued, regionally. So I am still confident in the Phuket property market.” Patrick added that the land for phase 4 and 5 has already been purchased and that he and his team have a great investment opportunity for all new investors. It was a little bit difficult getting there since we set off during rush hour but we were lucky enough to get there in time and luckier still to find a parking spot just in front of our destination! See how lucky we are! Getting out of our tiny red Japanese car we set out to find our interviewee for GM Talk this issue: Sawai Sombat, General Manager of La Flora Resort Patong. Khun Sombat came to Phuket 20 years ago for the Holiday Inn, before moving to Tavorn Palm Beach, Laguna Beach Resort and Dusit Group Resort. All told Khun Sombat has been working in hospitality industry for over 30 years. So we thought we would ask him a few questions about it! is from Nakorn Sri Thammarat. Though not a Phuket local, he has been resident in Phuket for almost 20 years having worked for Dusit Thani Laguna, formerly Dusit Laguna Resort. Interestingly Nikorn did not start at Dusit as a tennis coach; in fact he had never played the game prior to taking a job there. So how did he become a tennis coach after only starting out as operations staff? Nikorn who is now in his tenth year of playing told us ‘I didn’t play tennis at first; but working here I saw how many guests visited and played tennis as Dusit Thani Laguna has two tennis courts. That sparked my interest in tennis and resulted in my career as a coach a few years later.’ We asked Nikorn what is the attraction for him about Tennis? He stated ‘It’s about exercise and practice. I love tennis because it challenges me and keeps me active all the time. In order to play well, you have to be fit and have a sharp mind’ Nikorn further informed us Tennis has also benefitted his friendship with others ‘I met and have a lot of tennis friends all over Thailand as well as in many countries around the world. We practice, we share, we discuss - play and exercise techniques. This is far more beneficial than reading a manual or searching for information on the internet’ On the development of Tennis in the country Nikorn informed us “Tennis in Thailand became popular after our government began supporting domestic tennis championships and competitions. Tennis resultantly turned into one of the most popular sports in Thailand. We developed world class players who climbed up the world rankings like Paradorn Srichaphan.” However, Nikorn reveals he hopes Thai youths resultantly don’t just see Tennis as a route to ‘chic fashion’ and money, but instead play it for the love of the game. Moreover, Nikorn informed us ‘My dream in tennis is, to coach and teach children what I know, so they can be successful. I would like to help them win competitions’ advised Nikorn who is also personally interested in sports science and physical education but does not have as much time as he would like to pursue it, because of his position and responsibilities at Dusit Thani Laguna. ith Phuket’s development as a world class tourist destination, so it has become more international in focus; responding as it has to the needs of the foreigners that have come to live here. Education is one area that has benefitted with international schools springing up all over the island. Among them, British Curriculum International School (Formerly Dulwich International College) is probably the foremost, having been in operation over ten years. The school is divided into two educational institutions: Primary and Secondary Schools which provide a British based education system for both day students and boarders. This month Phuketindex.com visited the campus and briefly spoke with three students about their impressions of their school.

Guy or Eakkaphob was the first student we spoke with. A Thai student ‘Guy’ reveals he likes the school environment because it is very conducive to learning. ‘It is beautiful place’ he told us before continuing “We have great teachers here. As well as Mathematics and Arts I love to study Chemistry, which is my favourite class. I like attending it because of the lecturer; Ms Christine Easton who in my opinion is an interesting and kind teacher.”

Paradorn Promkird Creative Director Guide Vision Limited In this issue’s IT talk, Phuketindex.com speaks with experienced web designer, Paradorn Promkird. Paradorn is the recently promoted head graphic designer for ‘Guide Vision Company Limited’ who has over 3 years experience in the industry. Phuketindex.com hopes his thoughts can be of help to our readers as he is now spearheading many of our own new project publications. Paradorn please tell us what interests you about computers and IT? When I was younger computers were a very new development for Thai children. Most of us did not know much about them. I knew however that computers’ represented the future and would be an essential skill if I wanted to be successful in life. So when I was faced with the various choices of what to study in school, I opted to study Computer Science. Paradorn please tell us about your views on website technology? Websites are used to promote nearly every business. If a business owner wants to create consumer awareness, then a website is an excellent solution. Websites can easily promote information around the world and are not limited to local boundaries in the way that radio and television broadcasts are. Such broadcasts are also frequently constrained to limited audiences and for only the short period of the advert – website have no such constraints. What for you is the most important part of the process? For me it is the information and content. If we do not receive good information then we have to work much harder. It is a bit like cooking: if you have a lot of ingredients, then it’s possible to create more dishes. The same applies with website design. Gathering all the information therefore is the first step. We need to know every detail; from the business characteristics, to target market, to customer preference. If all this available then the ensuing steps will be easier. Is there a set working model? No. For me, every project is equally important - but usually different. It is important therefore to be

objectively selective for it does not follow that if something works on one project it will necessarily work on another. For customers who know what they want, this is not a problem, but some are not familiar with the technology, and it is then that we have to make a decision and choose the best option for them. Please explain the difference between web design and graphic design? Whether you are creating something for the web or for a magazine each requires a design component it’s just the parameters that are different. A website has some limitations whereas for a publication its ‘space’ allows us to play a bit further. For each, however, customer appeal is the key. What makes a good website? It is not enough to simply launch an interesting website on the internet. You need to think about its target market. So you need to work also on its content, coding, and linkage. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is vital as without this your website won’t be recognised by search engines and therefore will only receive limited traffic. Through doing this we aim to create a website with effective and efficient communication.

A bit complicated? Phuketindex.com took the chance to meet up with Dr. Panachai for a casual chat at his lovely home and see if we could what he does a bit simpler. On his beginnings with Phuket International Dental Center; “I am actually a native of Petchaboon province in Northern Thailand. But I have been living in Phuket since 1985. It was then my wife Dr. Wethanee (Worranuch) Karnkorkul and I established our first ‘Dental Care Clinic’ followed by our advanced Dental Centre - ‘Dent Central Clinic’. Earlier this year, we opened our latest; ‘Phuket International Dental Center’ at Phuket International Hospital.”

This is something we developed in our three subsequent dental branches.” On problem solving; “I never think that I face immense obstacles in my life, the problems I face are common to all businesses. It’s just differing job aspects which need to be dealt with in different circumstances; and that’s where my experience comes in.” On staff relationships; “I treat our dental staff with both sincerity and respect. We have to trust their abilities, and motivate and support them in order that they can achieve their best. We hope in this way they will remain loyal to us. On a motto for life; “I remind myself and my three children to remain; diligent, honest, responsible, and loving of their family.” On the future; “I have numerous things I would like to do if I retire. I am a collector and like to collect rare trees, pearl furniture and wood carvings – especially those of elephants. Previously I collected old cars but maintaining them can become tiring. I also like to play golf and will play as long as my age allows. On retirement, I’d like to take a long drive with my wife through all the provinces of Thailand. But it is my dream to see Phuket as a major world dental destination and I would like to set up a Dental Hospital. The corner area is inspired by the owner’s Chinese tea mania and is ideal for a small traditional gathering. From the priceless pearl, marble and wooden tea table set, to the jade tree accompanying it, Chinese traditions abound here. God images and statues which are set upon a beautifully carved wooden show case create an appealing atmosphere. Items have been collected over a prolonged period: from time to time; from place to place; from piece to piece. Some items are original designs of the owner, whilst others are gifts. Regarding décor remember one adage - ‘do it with love’. The Jade tree chosen as the queen of the corner has a definition of its own; green leaves represent peace, golden leaves represent wealth, deep blue-violet leaves represent supremacy, and the stone base represents solidity. Combined they symbolise a well founded life, richness and serenity.

Yaowawit School Kapong is a registered public welfare school located in the South of Thailand which provides long term assistance to children who have suffered terrible disadvantages due to the Tsunami. Children suffering from the effects of disease and or awful

The history of the school itself is somewhat interesting: In mid January 2005, a couple of weeks after the devastating Tsunami, Yaowawit School was constructed on an area of land measuring 22 hectares. Located near the southern Thai village of Kapong the school was built to cater to 180 ‘boarding’students and 50 external students. The first section of the boarding school was opened on April 24th 2006 in the presence of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn whilst regular school operations began on May 17th 2006. Currently Yaowawit School has both ‘kindergarten’ and ‘primary school’ levels of education. However, future plans are afoot for providing a higher level of education covering ‘intermediary school’ levels and more. The school’s curriculum is based on Thai standards, and the inter-related needs of the local and regional politic. Enrolled students are reared under Thai values and traditions whilst also benefitting from aspects of the program incorporated from modern global life. Students for example will grow up bilingually – learning both Thai and English. Moreover, students will also learn how to use computers and the internet as well being schooled in traditional Thai music and dance. Sports and fitness are further regular activities children will engage in as they will daily traditional Buddhist meditation, in order to support inner balance. Ensuring all in all a ‘broad church’ of development. Yaowawit School also encourages its children to learn how to aim for goals individually so that one day the children will be able to improve their living conditions. They arrange classes and training in craftsmanship and other practical areas that will prepare them for Southern Thailand’s most important business sectors such as farming, tourism and nursing. In response to these ideas, a large part of the school area is occupied by a plantation, dedicated to the agricultural education of the students. It is also used to supply the project with vegetables, herbs and fruit, and for commercial purposes in order to help the school cover its running costs. Additionally a small hotel or lodge has been built in order to allow the students to learn and experience first hand how to conduct the management and operation of a hotel and restaurant business. This is

part of the schools dedicated tourism faculty which seeks to best prepare its students for coping with all aspects of arguably Thailand’s most important industry. A specialised nursing facility is also under development in conjunction with Kapong District Hospital. The facility will see the management of the schools foundation and the officials of the hospital start an education program for nurses which will ensure cooperation from both facilities and provide great benefits to Yaowawit’s students. Both the school and boarding school are exclusively run by Thais nationals ensuring the needs of the children are genuinely understood. At Yaowawit School however, these people are regarded more as tutors than teachers: companions and coaches who help and assist in all areas of the child’s development. To augment and improve the process specialists from various disciplines for example Sport or English are often invited to offer their expertise. Yaowawit School now hosts over 80 children but is striving to survive itself; so outside support of any kind is particularly welcome.
