Indulge The Ultimate Gentleman’s Bar

It’s unique, plush, sinful and delicious; Indulge is a gentleman’s dream at Dream.

entlemen of taste, your hour has finally come. For the first time in Phuket there’s a place where gentlemen can retire to, a place where every whim is seen to by a dream team of gorgeous allfemale staff members; a fine wine bar with a full supporting cast of smooth vintage whiskeys, brandies and cigars. Far removed from Patong’s tawdriness, this haven of respectability and taste is aptly called Indulge and it’s to be found on the grounds of Dream Hotel & Spa on the island’s northwest coast in Cherngtalay.

With an intimately designed interior f e a t ur i ng pl us h l e a t he r s e a t s , indoor and outdoor-seating and soft lighting arrangements, Indulge has covered all the best options, leaving you to simply choose from a truly impressive drinks and tapas choice while surrounded by classic opulence. Starting from a 12-label champagne list ranging from Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial (there’s also a rosé version for those who appreciate a blush or two) to a lofty Salon Blanc Brut 1999/2002, it’s definitely impressive.

Lifestyle - Front Page

With an intimately designed interior featuring plush leather seats

For sparkling wine aficionados there are 18 brilliant choices to make – including a classy Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superior DOSCG Millesimato 2012 Villa Sandi. Notable amongst the 11-label rosé list is the Whispering Angel Cotes de Provence 2012 from the world-famous Chateau D’Esclans. This choice comes in magnum and jeroboam sizes. Definitely recommended for lots of pink fun. Notable in the 70+ choices of white wine from all the major winegrowing areas in both the New World and Old World is the simple yet bewitching Italian Chardonnay Poidilei DOC 2013 Pio Cesare and a Louis Latour Meursault Poruzots Premier Cru.

Impressed? It gets even better. You’ll find medium (yet canny) to absolutely excellent red wine choices at Indulge – all served at exactly the right temperature of course – including Pinot Noirs; Sangiovese selections; a good choice of Merlots; Syrah and Shiraz labels as well as Shiraz blends; a fine Cabernet Sauvignon selection; a succulent three-label Argentine Malbec choice; an excellent Grenache selection which, of course, offers several Chateauneuf du Pape options, and a great Italian selection that includes Nero D’Avola, Primitivo, and Nebbiolo, while Spanish wine is amply represented with a robust choice of Riojas, as it should be.

A place where gentlemen can retire to, a place where every whim is seen to by a dream team of gorgeous all-female staff members

The cocktail and whiskey/whisky list is second to none with the best labels money can buy – all served up by a glamourous mixologist – and if you’re feeling hungry there are world-class Mediterranean tapas, tasty Thai bites, cheese platters, and charcuterie selections. It’s unique, plush, sinful and delicious; Indulge is a gentleman’s dream at Dream.

Open: Monday – Friday 17:00 – 02:00 weekends 14:00 – 02:00

Natthakanya Saengpho CEO of Paradise Group

hun Natthakanya Saengpho, better known to her friends and work colleagues as ‘Apple’, originally hails from Bangkok and has more than made her name in Phuket Province as the Chief Executive Officer of Paradise Group. Paradise Group was established back in 2002 and nowadays is a major mover and shaker on the island in tasteful and quality project design, project consultancy, project development and project management. The Paradise Groups ‘footprints’ are not hard to find on the island as they include completed projects such as the award-winning Andara Resort Villas & Andara Resort Residences, the trendy Plaza Surin boutique shopping centre, and many other ongoing private developments in Phuket – each new project expanding Paradise’s skills and knowledge of how best to accommodate the ultra high-end international market.

Enjoys learning and am eager to pick up new skills. I learn quickly and adapt well to new techniques and challenges.

Andara Signature – the latest project from Andamandara Development, the company she runs with Dr Allan Zeman – won best ‘Phuket Villa Development’, ‘Best Thailand Villa Development’, ‘Best Residential Architectural Design’ and ‘Best Landscape Architectural Design’ at the Thailand Property Awards in September of last year. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in business management and accounting from Bangkok University and has more than 20 years’ experience within the international property industry in a plethora of areas which include; property design, development, construction management and of course property management. In a nutshell, she’s an all-rounder in a specialised field. Still, there’s more to Apple than propertyrelated activities and aims in life. For a start, she’s a firm believer in the Dasavidha-rājadhamma – a ten-fold Buddhist belief that many leaders of industry, and indeed nations, are encouraged to adhere to for the benefit of all. In short, these ten-fold beliefs consist of Dāna (charity), Sīla (morality), Pariccāga (altruism), Ājjava (honesty), Maddava (gentleness),Tapa (self control), Akkodha (non-anger), Avihimsa (nonviolence), Khanti (forbearance) and Avirodhana (uprightness). She’s a firm believer in leading by example and also of sharing one’s blessings with others. She states, “When I’m successful I share it with others in the community.” Indeed, she’s an active philanthropist and donates to Kamala Community Welfare Fund every year. This fund was set up to help disadvantaged people in Kamala and supports sick babies, children, and elderly people as well as providing support for critical hospitalised patients. Apple and her team are also active in the Kamala Beach Cleaning Club, helping

with weekly Friday afternoon beach cleanups organized by local teens. Not only that but she also oversees the Andara’s donating leftover greens and fruits for the well being of Kamala Sub-district Administration in the making of Effective Microorganisms or EM. Every summer, Apple supports teachers’ fees, lunches and stationary for children who join the Masjid Phadungsas Baan Kamala summer camp. This activity helps parents to place their children in a positive

environment while the schools are closed for holidays – something every hard-working and responsible parent appreciates very much. She’s also active in ‘Phuket Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Network as well as providing the budget for placing trash filters at the mouths of five Kamala canals in order to remove debris and trash before it reaches the sea,.

Apple’s an ardent believer in the pillars of community and very much believes in the old adage: “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.” Her personal motto as she goes through life comes from American writer Stephen Chbosky: “We can’t choose where we come from but we can choose where we go from there.” In addition to all of this, she – incredibly enough – also finds time to be on the Kamala Police Station monitoring committee, helping in motorcycle helmet wearing awareness, maintaining the property and donating office equipment, and even providing lunch for police officers in Andara’s Silk restaurant.

In perhaps an unwitting sideline that truly complements Andara’s traditional Thai décor and atmosphere, Apple also actively promotes the conservation of traditional Thai silk. In October 2015, Apple was

“When I’m successful I share it with others in the community.”

honoured by United States Agency for International Development as one of the Outstanding Women Business Leaders of Thailand for Green Growth – an award designed to encourage environmental development. In Apple’s own words she, “enjoys learning and am eager to pick up new skills. I learn quickly and adapt well

to new techniques and challenges.” In Phuket’s ever-changing business and development arenas these are valuable skills to possess and wield but her pragmatic side generally prevails. She says, “I learn almost everything I need to know about depth of field. There are several factors to consider, as well as internal and external elements that may cause a project to derail. However, by taking a few precautions and having an excellent plan in place, ensure our project will move along smoothly.” Hard working, energetic, and innovative, Khun Natthakanya Saengpho is an example for young up-and-coming female executives and future leaders. By sticking to strong work and spiritual ethics she’s forged a highly-respected place in Phuket’s business community.

Phuketindex would like to introduce the newly-appointed Marcom Manager Thailand at Impiana Hotel Group – Attaneeya Plengwittaya or ‘Mimmamn’. Just arrived from Bangkok, Mimmamn has brought along with her not just her extensive experience in the Public Relations fields but also her charming smile that brightens up the island, us included! We’re very delighted for the opportunity K. Mimmamn gave us to get a little bit closer to her personal life. Here’s what we found out about her.

Her Hobbies I like to exercise. For me jogging or boxing is the ideal solution considering how little time I have to work this into my schedule.

1 Must-Have Item Sunscreen lotion is a total must when living in Thailand. We’re close to the equator here and it’s difficult to avoid the sun. As PR people we have to meet a lot of people and have to look our best so personally this makes me especially aware of skin care.

4 Bold Lips Bold lips enhance my character. You’ll always see me with bold lips. I think they suit me the most and make me stand out.

5 Can’t live without My Smart Phone. I use it daily and it’s almost become a part of me. If I forget it at home this means that I simply cannot contact others and in my job this is impossible as my phone is indispensable.

Her Style

A simple, modern style that reflects my personality, suitable for any occasion.

2 Her Accessories

Her Costume

Handmade earrings. This pair of earrings I got from dear friends who made them especially for me. They shine out and when I go to a party or any impromptu event, they can help make me outstanding.

Most of the time trousers maybe paired with a clutch bag and a pair of matching earrings.

3 Lamy Pen This is my favourite pen. It has a flashy colour and always grabs people’s attention when I take it out. Impressive!

6 Her Favourite Photo It was taken when I took part in the grand opening event of EMQuartier, a new shopping place on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok. I was Public Relations Division Manager at The Mall Group at the time, and my job was to make the event talked about, known and remembered. It was challenging.

In the early 1800s when travelers started to step ashore in the area they called ‘The Peninsula’ (current-day southern Thailand) the majority of them were Indian, Hokkien Chinese & Portuguese. Over time, relationships within the settlements grew intimate and many married locals. ‘Baba’ was the name given to male offspring and ‘Nyonya’ to the females. These children were the result of different people, cultures, ideas, philosophies and tastes coming together and creating something truly unique. ‘Baba’ for us is a concept encompassing the people, design, architecture, cultural, food, music and much more.

Patrizia Battolu

Chef de Cuisine at La Gritta, Amari Phuket Rich Food. Rich Life.

Travel - Chef Talk

Patrizia started to cook when very young and took up being a chef as a career when she was about 21 years old, and now her culinary journey leads her to La Gritta – one of the most beautiful Italian restaurants in Phuket.

hef Patrizia begins her culinary journey in Phuket in one of the most beautiful Italian restaurants on the island. Phuketindex visited her at La Gritta to learn about her passions and her food. Chef Patrizia comes from Rome. She was originally born in Sardinia but lived almost all of her life in Rome for her profession before she moved to Phuket. Like many chefs, she feels cooking is her chosen profession since an early age. “I started to cook when I was very young, around ten years old. My mother played an important role as she was always very curious and interested in international food. So it’s not difficult for me to cook,” says Chef Patrizia.

“I’m very happy when people are happy with my creations.”

She started to cook for 30-40 people when she was only a teenager then Patrizia went to university to study languages (Chef Patrizia speaks English and French and little bit of Arabic) but the culinary arts always held her interest. “I love to play with the colours of food and combine as many different ingredients as possible. Because life is very rich so I want my dishes to be rich like life.” Her mother was her great inspiration and mentor. Absorbing her mentor’s cooking style resulted in interesting combinations. Her cooking career officially began when she was about 21 years old in a hotel in Northern Italy. Chef Patrizia later returned to Rome after this experience. There she helped her uncle in a catering service before she became the manager of a small restaurant in the center of Rome. “Small but very popular,” as she says. She started her own catering service herself after a while, supplying for weddings, meetings and events. “The last big meeting before I came here was for 700 people,” she says.

Acqua Restaurant Alessandro Frau

Following a black-and-white theme that gifts the restaurant clean lines and a good sense of proportion, Acqua’s design fully complements an all-round satisfying dining experience. The restaurant has imaginative lighting, nowhere more so than at the bar. Trendy without being gratuitously chic, cutting edge without going over the top and spacious without being cavernous, Acqua’s décor balance practicality and aesthetics in a fine dining environment in Phuket.

Sander Looijen General Manager of Renaissance Phuket Resot & Spa

eing a media company affords us the chance to meet new and amazing people and that’s why we love to do this. recently had the opportunity to join up with the newly appointed General Manager of the beautiful Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa. Joining the team at Renaissance on the 9th of September, 2015, GM Sander Looijen revealed his background and enthusiasms with us. Sander is originally from Nijmegen, Holland and moved to the beautiful city of Maastricht in the south of Holland when he was about 18-19 years old where he started in hotel management school. During his studies he also worked for different restaurants in the city. He did his traineeship in Shanghai, China and who could have known that that time would have made him fall in love with Asia and would dream to be back? He finished his studies and has been in the hospitality industry around Asia for 12 years now.

About his career path I started my career in Shanghai with Marriott about 12 years ago. I worked there as a trainee and became

Image Copyright Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa

Restaurant Manager a year later. After sometime there, I moved to Hong Kong to work for another Marriott for two years in a few different capacities but mostly food & beverage. Then I moved back to open a new hotel, the Renaissance Zhongshan Park in the middle of Shanghai where I worked in Restaurant and Events Management as well. After that I moved to Renaissance Beijing Capital as Food & Beverage director. A year and a half later, I was asked by the regional office in Hong Kong to take over the role of Director of Restaurants and Bars for Asia. I was there for about four years and now I started my new role as a General Manager in this beautiful hotel.

Why have you been appointed to be the new GM of Renaissance Phuket? With a smile on his face, GM Sander says that ‘maybe we should ask his boss’ before continuing, “I think the hotel is quite modern, young, and has an energetic vibe and I think my personality fits with that. It’s also my first appointment as a General Manager so I guess the energy and the whole spirit that I bring to the hotel will hopefully bring it up to the next level.”

What ae the biggest obstacles you come up against within your job and how do you ovecome them?

How do you think the job hee in Phuket compaes to your pevious jobs? “I think it’s very different from other jobs. First, as a General Manager running a hotel the experience is something new to me. Second, it is a resort location. In the past I used to travel a lot to Thailand and one of my missions was to come here because I love the country and finally here I am. It’s a different culture, a different kind of people, but it’s really wonderful to be here, to be part of this beautiful resort.”

What’s going to be your main task hee? “The number one thing that I will be focusing on as a General Manager I think is the team. People that work for the hotel are by far most important asset of the hotel. We have to make sure we take care of them. Our company philosophy is ‘if we take care of our stewardship, they will take care of our guests and the guests will come back’ and I truly believe in that. Second, of course is that I will take care of our guests. I think a General Manager should be around in the hotel to meet as many guests as possible and to get their feedback. In general guests like to express their feelings and like to share the feedback. It’s very important.”

Is thee any aspect o the job you like moe than anything else and why? “It’s the same as I just mentioned, being surrounded by people, talking to people, getting the feedback from people has always been my passion. I believe that creating a team and developing people into new roles, into higher roles gives me great fulfillment. That’s one thing that I particularly like about working in a hotel. Because there are so many people and to work with those amazing people is the thing that I enjoy the most.”

“One of the biggest obstacles in general, not only for this hotel but also for Phuket, is the ever-changing market. There are so many different nationalities that come to the resort and the economy and environment of those countries have direct impacts on our hotel. So to stay updated with all the situations in those countries of course is very important and even more important is to react to those changes. When we see changes within the market, we need to make sure that our offerings will attract the other segments of the market. I think that’s one of the most important things that I need to focus on.”

Do you have a personal goal now you ae hee at Renaissance Phuket? “My goal is always to be number one in terms of anything that I can be number one in. I’m quite a competitive person. I would like to be number one but it’s not going to happen over a few weeks or a few months but with a longterm strategy and a building up and motivating the team in the right ways. I truly believe that we can achieve that.”

What do you like to do in your spae time, i you have any? “When I’m free I like to spend time with my family which is by far the most important thing in my life. I have two young boys so you can imagine that I’m busy at work and maybe even busier when I get home! But it’s lots of fun. Besides that, I like sports, especially water sports. I’m extremely pleased to be in Phuket. I love swimming so I hope to do a lot of that. I would also like to start Thai boxing which I have done a few times in the past and I enjoyed that a lot. Of course, here is the perfect place to practice Thai boxing.”
