Let’s Join the Sacred Vegetarian Festival Two Provinces, Two Styles, One Objective
ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก เป็นการแสดงถึง การรวมพลังศรัทธา อันยิ่งใหญ่ที่เกรียงไกร ไปทั่วโลกของลูกหลาน ชาวภูเก็ตและพังงา เชื้อสายจีน ที่สืบสาน งานประเพณีกันมา ยาวนานเกินกว่า 100 ปี
The vegetarian festival is an event that shows strong faith embedded within the locals of Chinese descents of Phuket and Phang-Nga. This tradition which has been practiced for more than a hundred years is, today, becoming better known around the world and drawing in visitors from all different places.
ในช่วงระหว่างงาน ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก ชาวภูเก็ตและพังงา แทบทุกคนต่างแต่งกาย ด้วยชุดขาว รับประทาน อาหารที่ปรุงจากผัก ปราศจากเนื้อสัตว์ มีจิตใจตั้งมั่นอยู่ในศีล ธรรมและเคารพในข้อ ปฏิบัติของประเพณี
During the period which the vegetarian festival takes place, nearly everyone in Phuket and PhangNga would dress up in white clothing, consume vegetables and refrain from eating meat. They would also practice good moral conduct and strictly follow rules of this sacred tradition.
ศาลเจ้าในจังหวัด ภูเก็ต คึกคักเนืองแน่น ไปด้วยผู้คนที่ศรัทธา ต่างหลั่งไหลเข้ามาร่วม ทำ�บุญ เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคล กับชีวิต และร่วมเป็น ส่วนหนึ่งในการประกอบ พิธีกรรมต่างๆ ที่จัดขึ้น
Shrines in Phuket would be overflowing with believers who come to make merit in order to enrich their lives and be a part of the sacred ceremony.
พิธีกรรมในแต่ละ ศาลเจ้าอาจแตกต่างกัน แต่มีจุดมุ่งหมายเป็น หนึ่งเดียว คือให้ผู้ที่ ศรัทธาได้อยู่ในศีลธรรม และข้อปฏิบัติที่สืบทอด กันมาช่วงระยะเวลา 9 วัน
Rituals taking place in each shrine may differ slightly from one another but they are all directed towards the same goal which is to maintain good moral conduct and abide by the rules of the ceremony throughout the nine-day period.
พิธีกรรม ที่ไม่ควรพลาด เมื่อมาร่วมงาน ประเพณี ถือศีลกินผัก Some of the rituals not to be missed include:
พิธีโกยห่าน หรือพิธีสะเดาะเคราะห์ The ‘Goy Haan’ Ritual or the Ceremonial Bridge-Crossing Ritual
ผู้เข้าร่วมพิธี ต้องตัดกระดาษเป็นรูปตัวเอง พร้อมเงิน ตามศรัทธาและต้นกุ้ยช่าย 1 ต้น เดินข้ามสะพาน ให้ผู้ประทับทรงประทับตราด้านหลังของเสื้อ เรียกว่า “ต๊ะอิ่น” หมายถึงผู้ที่ผ่านการสะเดาะเคราะห์แล้ว **การเดินข้ามสะพานเปรียบเสมือนการเดินทางเข้าสู่ชีวิต ใหม่** Participants are to bring a doll figure cut from paper to resemble themselves, any amount of money and a Chinese chive plant. They must walk across the bridge along with the offerings then the medium would stamp a sign called ‘Tah-In’ on the back of their shirts, meaning they have successfully been rid of bad fortune. **Walking across the bridge symbolizes entering a new life**

The ‘EIOW GENG’ Ritual or STREET PROCESSION Ritual
เป็นพิธีออกเยี่ยมขององค์กิ๊วหองไต่เต่ เพื่ออวยพรให้กับประชาชนทั่วไป โดยมีขบวนธง และป้ายชื่อแห่นำ�หน้า ต่อด้วยเสลี่ยงเล็ก (ไฉ้เปี๋ย) จากนั้นเป็นขบวนของหนิ่วสั่ว (ร่มฉัตรจีน) ต่อด้วยตั่วเหลี้ยน (เสลี่ยงใหญ่) ซึ่งเป็นที่ประทับขององค์กิ๊วหองไต่เต่ This is a ritual where the God, ‘Giew Hong Tai Tay’, pays the people a visit. At the front of the procession are flags and name sign followed by a small litter vehicle (Chai Pia). Next is the ‘Niew Sua’, the Chinese canopy procession followed by the ‘Tua Lian’, the larger litter vehicle which carries the God, ‘Giew Hong Tai Tay’.
ชาวบ้านจะตั้งโต๊ะ บูชาหน้าบ้านและคุกเข่า อยู่ในอาการสงบนิ่ง เพื่อรับพรจากองค์ กิ๊วหองไต่เต่ขณะที่ขบวน แห่เสด็จผ่าน
People would put up a table full of offerings in front of their houses and kneel down to receive blessings from the god as his procession passes by.

The ‘GIEW HONG TAI TAY’ SEND-OFF RITUAL OR FAREWELL Ritual
ในคืนวันสุดท้ายของประเพณี จะมีการส่งองค์ หยกหองส่องเต่ ซึ่งมักส่งกันที่หน้าเสาโกเต้ง ช่วงเวลา 22:30 น. กลับสวรรค์ หลังจากนั้น ก็ส่งองค์กิ๊วหองไต่เต่ (ส่วนใหญ่จะส่งที่ชายทะเล สะพานหิน) เมื่อขบวนส่งพระออกพ้นประตู ไฟทุกดวง ในอ๊าม (ศาลเจ้า) ต้องดับสนิท และปิดประตูใหญ่ On the last day of the festival, there would be a ceremony to send off the ‘Yok Hong Song Tay’ god back to heaven. This usually takes place in front of the Go Teng pillar at arounf 10:30pm. Afterwards, the farewell ceremony for the ‘Giew Hong Tai Tay’ god would take place at Saphan Hin (Stone Bridge). Once the procession has exited the gate, all the lights in the ‘Ahm’ or shrine must be turned off and the main doorway closed.
คืนวันส่งพระเป็นคืนอันยิ่งใหญ่ ถนนในเมืองภูเก็ต สองข้างทาง เต็มไปด้วยผู้คนที่มารอส่งองค์ หยกหองส่องเต่ พร้อมตั้งโต๊ะ และจุดประทัดจำ�นวนมหาศาล นับล้านๆ ตับ ตั้งแต่หัวค่ำ� ท้องฟ้าเต็ม ไปด้วยสีสันสวยงามของพลุมากมาย “บอกคำ�เดียวว่าต้องห้าม ...พลาด ...แบบนี้ไม่มีที่ใดในโลกแน่นอน”
The night of the farewell is a grand event of Phuket where streets would be filled with people joining in to send-off the ‘Yog Hong Song Tay’ god. There would be tables of offerings, millions of firecracker shots and the sky would light up with colorful fireworks. There is nothing else like it in this world so you definitely don’t want to miss this moment.
การจุดประทัดเหมือน การบ่งบอกให้สวรรค์ ได้รับรู้ถึงแรงศรัทธา อันยิ่งใหญ่เพื่อเป็นสิริมงคล แก่ชีวิต และเป็นสัญญ ลักษณ์การสิ้นสุดประเพณี ในปีนี้ และในปีหน้า ชาวภูเก็ตจะมารวมพลัง ร่วมสืบสานงานประเพณี ถือศีลกินผักกันต่อไป
Lighting up firecrackers is a way of sending messages to heaven so the gods would notice unwavering faith of the people thus bringing good fortune into their lives. Equally important, it officially marks the end of the festival for the year, which will begin again around the same time the following year.

If you decide to come and join the Vegetarian Festival, you must not miss the chance to witness the Eiow Geng ceremony which takes place on the classic Sino-Portuguese route in Phang-Nga Province’s Tagua Pa old town.
ช่วงบ่ายวันสุดท้ายของ ประเพณีถือศีลกินผักศาล เจ้าในเมืองตะกั่วป่า ต่างทยอยกันทำ�พิธี เอี๊ยวเก๊ง (แห่พระ) ออกเยี่ยมประชาชน บรรดาประชาชน ต่างเตรียมตั้งโต๊ะไหว้ หน้าบ้าน รอต้อนรับ ตลอดสองข้างทาง
On the afternoon of the festival’s last day, the Eiow Geng procession would be held by different shrines in Tagua Pa and people would lay out tables full of offerings in front of their houses.
เมื่อขบวนเริ่มเดินออกจากศาลเจ้า จะเห็นม้าทรง ร่วมด้วยผู้ศรัทธา ช่วยกันแบกเสลี่ยงเล็ก เมื่อผ่าน หน้าบ้านใคร ชาวบ้านจะจุดประทัด โยนไปที่เสลี่ยง ผู้แบกจะโยกตัว พร้อมไกวเสลี่ยงเป็นจังหวะไปมา ไม่เหมือนที่ใดในโลก ทุกย่างก้าวที่เดิน ล้วนมีเสน่ห์และมนต์ขลัง เกิดจากพลังศรัทธาที่แท้จริง การร่วมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของประเพณี ถือศีลกินผัก ต่างเชื่อว่า เป็นการทำ�บุญที่ยิ่งใหญ่ ทำ�ให้หลุดพ้นจากเคราะห์กรรม ปราศจากโรคภัยไข้เจ็บ มีสุขภาพ ที่แข็งแรงและชีวิตเจริญรุ่งเรือง เหมือนดั่งคำ�จีนที่ว่า ลก ฮก ซิว
As the procession leaves the shrines, you could see the ‘mediums’ and believers carrying the small litter vehicle and proceed along streets, passing houses. Wherever they go, people would light up firecrackers and throw them into the litter vehicle while those carrying the litter would sway their bodies and gently rock the litter in a rhythmic motion. Every step taken is magical, powerful and full of faith which makes it unique, unlike anything else in this world. Participating in the sacred vegetarian festival is believed to bring great merit into one’s life thereby alleviating him/ her of bad karma, illnesses and bringing in health and prosperity, like the Chinese saying, Hok Lok Siew.

Getting around the island can be done through different modes of transportation like on the colorful Pothong open-air taxi or cycling. But if you prefer speed, there are motorcycles for rent as well.

Although the sands on Yao Yai Island are not as soft or white as powder but the sceneries of families enjoying time together on the beach, exercising and watching the sunset on Loh Parade Beach sure makes up for it because this is the kind of view city people seldom get a chance to see.

เดินทางโดยเรือเพียง 15 นาที จาก “เกาะยาวใหญ่” ก็มาถึง “เกาะยาวน้อย” ที่มีความสำ�คัญ ไม่ใช่น้อย เพราะเป็นที่ตั้งสถานที่ ราชการหลายหน่วยงานของอำ�เภอ เกาะยาว มีธนาคาร ร้านสะดวกซื้อ และมีร้านขายโรตีรสชาติดี๊..ดี อยากเห็น “สภาโรตี” ก็ต้องมาเที่ยว ที่เกาะนี้ค่ะ In just fifteen minutes from Koh Yao Yai (Big Yao Island), we reached Koh Yao Noi (Little Yao Island). It may be small but this is where many of the district’s municipal offices are located. There are also convenient stores, banks and of course, one of the most delicious Roti shops ever. So if you wish to see a congregation of roti lovers, you just have to come to this island.

Moreover, one of the main attractions that people come to photograph is the rice fields and buffalo spa. This rare scene happens only during planting season so many visitors make it a point to come during this period.

ใครที่ชอบขี่จักรยาน อยากชวนกัน ให้มารื่นรมย์บนเส้นทางที่ร่มรื่นด้วย การลอด “อุโมงค์ต้นไม้” ทั้งต้นยาง ต้นใหญ่ หรือต้นสนเรียงรายข้างทาง ทำ�ให้รู้สึกสดชื่นและผ่อนคลาย รับรอง เพื่อนๆต้องชอบกับการปั่นไป ชิลไป เพลินใจ จริงๆ ค่ะ For those who enjoy cycling, we highly recommend riding through the tree tunnel which consists of huge rubber and pine trees lining the both sides of the roads. This route is really refreshing and makes cycling so much more pleasant.

The fruits are known for their aromatic sour taste and are well-consumed in sun-dried, preserved in syrup or preserved in dehydrated form. They are considered a well-known OTOP product made by housewives of the community.

One doesn’t have to be old to reminisce about the past especially when it comes to Songkhla and its fascinating history. So, we decided to leave the loving embrace of Phuket to find out more. Those who prefer to fly could catch a plane by Bangkok Airways to Hadyai followed by a short car ride to Songkhla.

With our destination being Songkhla old city, we journeyed on foot from the city gate and wandered through Nakhorn Nog, Nakhorn Nai and Nang Ngam Roads, the three historical streets that visitors must not miss.

Hub Ho Hin, a red mill
ครั้นเดินเลี้ยวลัดเลาะ มาถึงถนนนครใน มีไฮไลท์ อยู่ที่โรงสีเก่าแก่สีแดง มีอายุอานามนับร้อยปี ชื่อ “หับ โห้ หิ้น” แม้ทุกวันนี้ กิจการโรงสี จะยุติไปแล้ว แต่ทายาท ก็ได้ดูแลรักษาสถานที่ไว้ เป็นอย่างดี ทำ�ให้พวกเรา มีโอกาสได้สัมผัสเสน่ห์ ของอดีตเมืองสงขลา ได้ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้นค่ะ As we wandered around to Nakorn Nai Road, we found its highlight- a hundredyear-old red rice mill named Hub Ho Hin. Even though the mill is no longer in use today, the family’s successors have kept it in pristine condition so that later generations could experience Songkhla’s charming past more closely.

From Nakhorn Nai Road, we reached Nang Ngam Road where sweetness lingers in the air. This area is where you can find savory and sweets, especially traditional Thai sweets, Jewish ice cream and Aunty Juab’s fried tofu. Definitely a must visit for food lovers.

Bidding farewell to the old city, we headed off to another important location, Songkhla National Museum, situated on the opposite side of the city wall. Built over a hundred years ago, the main building showcases Chinese architectural style which inexplicably exudes a mystical, powerful aura.

Songkhla’s River Mouth Fort Number 8
ออกจากพิพิธภัณฑ์ฯพร้อมกับความรู้ ที่เพิ่มพูนขึ้นพอประมาณ รีบตรงไปลงแพ ขนานยนต์ข้ามฟาก ไปยังเขาแดง ได้ออกกำ�ลัง ปีนป่ายขึ้นไปบนที่สูงชันพอได้เหงื่อ เพื่อพบ กับป้อมปากน้ำ�เมืองสงขลา หมายเลข 8 หนึ่งใน 14 ป้อมโบราณที่รายล้อมเมือง เพื่อป้องกันข้าศึกและศัตรูในอดีต After a fun and educational tour of the museum, we headed straight for the huge ferry which transported the team and our vehicle over to Khao Daeng on the other side. We had fun climbing to the upper part where Songkhla’s River Mouth Fort number 8 is located. This fort is one of eighteen built around the city to prevent enemy invasion prevalent in the old days.

We could see clear views of Laem Son On, Songkhla Pier and Songkhla’s iconic sculpture of the Naka Serpent spitting water from its mouth, that and the mermaid sculpture at the tip of Simila Peninsula.

Pah Koh Temple

It is believed to be the residence of Luang Por Tuad, the monk who walks on water, highly respected by Thais and foreigners. ประเพณี ลอยกระทง “วันเพ็ญเดือนสิบสอง น้ำ�ก็นองเต็มตลิ่ง เราทั้ง หลายชายหญิงสนุกกันจริงวันลอยกระทง” เสียง เพลงดังกังวาน ขับขานไปทุกหนแห่งเหมือนเป็น สัญญาณว่า ประเพณีลอยกระทงเริ่มขึ้นแล้ว ประเพณีลอยกระทงสืบทอดกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย เป็นราชธานี หรือเมื่อประมาณ 700 ปีก่อน โดยมี ความเชื่อว่าสายน้ำ�ก็เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิต ชาวไทย และทุกคนต่างผูกพันกับสายน้ำ� การลอยกระทงจึง เปรียบเสมือนการขอขมาและระลึกถึงพระแม่คงคา ที่ได้อำ�นวยประโยชน์ต่าง ๆ แก่มนุษย์ ในวันลอย ผู้คนจะนำ�กระทงหลากหลายแบบมาลอย เพื่อแสดง ความเคารพต่อพระแม่คงคงสวนสาธารณะต่าง ๆ มีงานรื่นเริง อาทิ ประกวดกระทง ประกวดนาง นพมาศ มีการละเล่นมากมาย บางคนก็เชื่อว่าการ ได้มาลอยกระทงกับคนรักทำ�ให้ความรักนั้นยั่งยืน และเป็นเนื้อคู่กันตลอดไป ลอยกระทงปีนี้คุณมีคน ลอยกระทงด้วยหรือยัง ???
