c a i l Essay t l a n a f l e S

I first joined journalism to expand my knowledge in writing and grammar. I wanted to show off skill I thought were important and learn new skills. I thought that maybe I could look back one day and see all the things I did and remember my high school years better. I have learned so much this year. I went through the In-Design class and I don’t know how I got things done before. It is so useful and I feel so creative thinking of ways to make side bars or shapes with color, text, and pictures. The photo shop program saves half my pictures! I get good angles or content, but sometimes the lighting is bad or the colors are too red; all I have to do is click a button and it is fixed. I also learned how to become a better teammate. The first spread I was in I was so in love with it that I took over it all myself, and I got so stressed out. My mentor had to remind me at least three times to ask for help. After a long struggle I asked for help and the spread turned out better than I thought. As a team the deadlines were easier to meet, and to get things done. I think that by taking this class I have gained more skills that could help me in business or where ever I decide to go. I plan to use these skills learned by applying them to my leadership roles. I will be writing letters to people, and telling others around me what adventures I have experienced, and lastly to bring happiness.

I think that the Creating wonders was my best peice of work because it was my first spread completed on the journalism staff. This piece just grabbed my attention and pulled me in close. I was so excited to be apart of this spread because i love learning how other people express themselves. The idea for the spread just popped into my head while my friend Nick Hermes described his creation. I admired his artistic abilities and I wanted to share them with others. I son found out that many others have done the same thing and it all came together quite nicely. I do regret not being able to use Luke Larson, he tinkers with all sorts of things. He is like a tinkering wiz. He can make whatever he wants he just imagines it and he makes it come to life with gears, springs, washers, wood, putty, and anything he can get his hands on. Even though i was in love with this spread it did cause me stress. It was my first time being on a spread and I was so attached to it that I didn’t trust anyone else for help. Little did I know that they were willing and able to help. So after I almost frazzled out I asked for help and I got it. The spread turned out very well and I am pleased with my team’s work.

Re f e l c t ion My second spread was about giving back to the community and about how the High school is a part of that communal lifestyle. SinceThis was my first spread I still hadn’t gotten the hang of the entire yearbookresponsibilities. In the end the spread turned out fine but not breath-taking. Not only did I learn more about how to design a proper spread but I also learned how much the high school really reaches out to our community. I saw people giving blood to strangers, others going out of their way to suffer a cold drizzly night to rise awareness of homelessness. I saw so many teens wanting to help. I learned more from this spread because I asked my mentors more questions and listened to their advice. Watching these works of art evolve with experience helped me to decide what techniques I like and how to put my own unique twist on it. If I had a chance to change anything about this spread it would be the pictures. It was so difficult to get good pictures with the deadlines we were under. Even though the pictures right now are satisfactory I wish I was able to capture more of the cause and effects of helping others.

I like this picture of Issac because the angle is good and there are geometrical lines everywhere. This also shows his concentration before launching into the water. The colors ties together nicely.

This picture of Lizzy was just perfect. By that point I had figured out how to get the lighting setting just right. I love her face; she truly captured being a kite. She danced while Elijah (Charlie Brown) Flew his kite.

I got lucky with this picture. I was in the meeting and I was trying to get different angles. Erin had been looking for ideas for the Rachel’s Challenge and I just looked over her shoulder. I like the black and white look of it because it gives it more depth and importance.

This year has been hard to balance my schedules. I have been so busy with all different activities and sports. I usually get things done on time but it’s hard. The worst thing about this class is my grade. It is by far the lowest grade… isn’t that sad? I work hard and I do understand not getting things done on time is rough but I am not super woman. It is upsetting to think that a fun class will ruin you GPA. I get so stressed trying to keep everything in line. It frustrates me to no end.

I am an asset to this staff because I want us to succeed, not just myself but all of us. I work so hard to make sure things are perfect. I am not the best designer or the best writer but I ask for help and get things done. One of my biggest pet peeves, is when people don’t realize something needs to be done or they are slow at getting it done. I work hard on doing things right the first time. This year I have helped on many spreads, and helped with the index. I have taken a fair share of the photos that will be published in many of the different activities. I can’t wait to get my hands on another camera for next year! Another thing I am great at is RETURNING CAMERAS. Why is it so hard to bring a camera back? It shouldn’t be. People are just lazy. I return cameras the day after I’m done.

The two goals I set for myself this semester was to sell more ads and to balance everything I had going on. I can honestly say I didn’t get anywhere with the ads. It was so hard this semester to balance all my activities with this class on top of it all. I struggled but it is almost over! I wish for the next semester, that i become a better designer and graphics maker. I want to be able to see my work and be satisfied not disgusted. I wish I had been able to get people to buy ads. I still want to try getting more but it was kind of impossible this semester because we had so many deadlines and never set aside time to do it. Even though I didn’t complete all my goals I conclude this semester a very successfully semester. I am so excited to see all my photos published. I got so many great photos and I am really excited to see them.

Have you ever gone into the cabinet to get a camera for you deadline? Have you ever wished to take an awesome track shot but you couldn’t? Did you ever wonder where your cameras went? TV is now advertising Rebekah’s Solution!! YAY! *crouds clapping in the back ground* (two people sit in blue chairs on a morning talk show set. The Man, the host, smiles at the beautiful young lady, Rebekah) “Good Morning Rebekah, the world wants to know your fantastic solution.” She folds her hands and looks at the camera. “Well Steve, I Wanted a camera and I didn’t have one. I went to a swim meet that night and saw so many perfect shots. I was so upset I couldn’t capture them. So I figured out a simple solution.” She paused and you could feel people at home on the edge of their seats. They felt her frustration and wanted a solution. “I propose that you may get a camera if you tell (the teacher or on a paper) exactly what you will use it for. Then you will have two or three days after that event to bring it back. If you fail to bring it back, you will experience a small fee each day it is gone. There will be some exceptions but only by teacher’s consent.” She guided her bangs behind her ear. The crowd behind the cameras clapped and they roared in satisfaction. Steve smiled and shook her hand. “A true solution, indeed.”
