Essential Oils

Your holistic and herbal kitchen

Measles confirmed in Tennessee Tennessee health officials have confirmed the first cases of measles in Nashville in 2019. The positive news is that Tennessee, when compared to some states, has a relatively high vaccination rate. Dr Tim Jones, the Tennessee Department of Health state epidemiologist, spoke to News Channel 5 about the outbreak and the state’s plan moving forward. “Our efforts are focused on preventing the spread of illness to others. This appearance of measles is a reminder about the importance of vaccines and how they can particularly protect our most vulnerable, including infants and those with compromised immune systems.” There has been a significant rise in the number of parents refusing to give their children vaccinations, behavior that has been strongly condemned by the medical profession and health department. The so-called ‘antivax’ movement and misinformation regarding vaccinations has led to a spike in reports of infectious diseases across the US. The measles virus is highly contagious, as it can stay airborne and remain on surfaces for almost two hours.

Using herbs and essential oils in recipes can appear to be a complex process, but as Sheila McGinnis explains, you often already own the equipment you need.

B

y now, you have been told of what types of herbs, oils, and supplements can help. You have even been given recipes, but have you tried it yet? Are you wanting to try some of these home-made remedies but don’t know where to start? I’m sure it feels a bit daunting, but here are some simple ideas to get you prepared.

Also, people who have been infected with measles may not show their symptoms for several days. The virus can be deadly, and if an unvaccinated person is exposed to the virus, there is a 90 percent chance they will become infected. In 2000, the disease was considered ‘eliminated’ from the US, but 2019 is the highest number of reports since 1994, with NPR reporting over 700 cases since January. Measles is one of the most highly infectious diseases known in the medical world. Before the vaccination was introduced in the US in the 1960s, there were almost four million cases each year. The Tennessee health department urges all residents to make sure they are up-to-date with all their vaccinations, including the MMR vaccine that protects against measles.

I’m sure I could keep adding to this list, but this is really all you need to start your journey to creating your own holistic/ herbal creations for health.

Now that you know you don’t need expensive equipment to equip your family with natural remedies, let me share a favorite go to that I have used with all three of my children since they were Let’s start with some equipment that will babies (they are all adults now and still make your experience a success, and you want this for colds and earaches). probably already have most of these in your kitchen.

The hospital celebrates 129 years of service this year. The city’s budget is $2.33 billion in total, which is a $101.5 million overall increase from the current year. Today is the day!

H

Karina Hammer, a certified Holistic Wellness Coach, offers her advice on how you can kick your cravings and focus on a healthier eating journey.

ave you ever said to yourself, “Today is the day I am going to start eating healthier!”? I think we have all said this to ourselves at one time or another. So, why don’t we stick with it? One of the problems is that we often think that eating healthier means eliminating foods that we crave, like chocolate chip cookies or the tempting bag of your favorite snack. When I talk with people about their cravings, everyone usually has at least one thing that seems to be standing in their way. Most people, in an attempt to eat healthier, tell themselves “I shouldn’t eat this” or “I am never going to eat that again”. But then suddenly, they find themselves with an intense craving for the very thing they are trying to give up. Have you ever thought about why this happens? Think of your mind like a magnet. Whatever thoughts come into your mind circulate around and around, and cause you to feel and act a certain way. When you focus on not eating something, you place a lot of attention on what you are not supposed to be doing. Whether it’s a positive or negative thought, either way, you are focused on it. Your thought “I will not eat cookies” rings in your brain as “cookies, cookies, cookies”. So how can you possibly stop eating cookies when all you are thinking about is not eating cookies? There is a better way to eating healthy, and it’s not about depriving yourself or denying yourself your favorite foods. When you deprive yourself, you wind up feeling dissatisfied which can lead to more cravings, overeating, and feelings of guilt. Let’s throw the guilt out the window! It’s not fun and you don’t need it in your life. Instead of focusing on what you can’t eat, flip it around and focus on what you can eat. By adding in all of the delicious, nourishing food that you can have – the food that you enjoy and that is healthy for you – suddenly the cravings for the foods that make you sick seem to disappear. Your body will recognize this change and say “THANK YOU!”. Keep adding in nutrient-

dense foods, and watch your cravings for processed, sugary foods diminish. Here are a few examples of Nutrient-Dense Foods that will leave you feeling satisfied: Fruits – blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, monk fruit, pomegranates Vegetables – avocados, kale, brussels sprouts, bok choy, sweet potatoes, daikon Fermented foods – kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, tempeh, miso Nuts & seeds – macadamia nuts, walnuts, hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds Seaweed – wakame, dulse, nori, kombu, kelp Try this exercise: List all of your favorite foods that are full of nutrients. (a.k.a. “healthy and tasty”). Next, decide on different meals to add these foods in during the week. Then, make a commitment to focus on these nutrient-dense foods for one month. Make sure you are adding them in each day. Post your goal on your refrigerator. If you crave something “unhealthy”, examine your list and decide if something on the list will do instead. If not, sit down and enjoy your treat without the guilt.

In the hope to encourage more young people to become active this summer, gym and fitness center Planet Fitness is opening its doors this summer for 15-18-year-olds for free. The ‘Teen Summer Challenge’ initiative, starting on May 15 and lasting until September 1, is available at all 1,700 locations in the country. In a statement, Planet Fitness outlined the importance of exercise for all ages. “The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recently released new physical activity guidelines, which revealed that 80 percent of Americans do not currently meet the recommended amount of physical activity. The guidelines also challenge youth (ages 6 – 17) to pursue a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate-tovigorous physical activity each day.”

As a Holistic Wellness Coach, my goal is to guide and support my clients to take responsibility for their health and wellbeing. If you need help getting started eating healthier, schedule a complimentary 30-minute health assessment today at www.karinahammer.com. Karina Hammer is a Certified Holistic Wellness Coach, Co-Founder of Nashville Integrative Health, Co-Host of The Magnetic Heart Radio Show, experienced wellness educator and author. Specializing in digestive and vocal health, Karina is committed to helping people find wholeness along their healing journey; utilizing a holistic approach to wellness that includes nutritional, emotional and spiritual modalities to get to the root of their biggest health concerns and bring lasting transformation. www.karinahammer.com 6

The brand argues that, due to school facilities and sports clubs shutting in the summer, the opportunity to stay active during the summer months declines significantly for teens. “We want to give teens across the United States the chance to stay active when school is out – a time when they may not otherwise have access to organized fitness or athletic programs, which is why we’re offering a safe space to exercise for free and spend time with their friends all summer long,” said Chris Rondeau, CEO of Planet Fitness. In addition to the complimentary entrance, teens will also be entered to win a number of scholarships and the opportunity to receive a $5,000 prize. There are 10 locations of Planet Fitness in the Nashville area.

Decoding men’s emotional health June is Men’s Health Month, and Dr Lisa Webb discusses why men might be more resistant to seeking professional help for their mental and emotional health.

M

ore times than I can count, men have come to an appointment and when asked why they are in my office, they say, “My wife/ girlfriend/ partner/ significant other told me to.” For years, it was thought that women had greater mental health concerns since they tended to visit psychiatrists and psychologists more often than their male counterparts. This is clearly untrue – men commit suicide four times more often than women do. More men than women abuse drugs and alcohol and initiate violence. Generally, I find the men whom I see are raised with the idea they should be strong. It is often considered ‘unmanly’ to admit feeling ‘low’ or ‘down’ and that they should just ‘push through it’.

New Nashville program to lower infant mortality

A new Nashville program to support healthy births and babies has been awarded over five million dollars. Mayor David Briley and Dr. Wendy Long, the director of the Metro Public Health Department revealed a five-year initiative entitled ‘Nashville Strong Babies Project’ in seven at-risk communities. The program will be available for 700 pregnant women and their families living in seven areas of Davidson County each year. The aim of the project is to increase healthy births and improve infant health, this will be achieved

Active men can be depressed

Depression among men is more common than you might realize; almost one in 20 men has a depressive episode each year. A study by psychologist D. B. Wexler indicated about half of men with depression don’t display classic symptoms, such as lack of motivation or diminished zest for life. Instead, they often throw themselves into alternative behaviors. These behaviors might be seen as ‘positive’ (such as exercising or working long hours at the office) or negative (such as engaging in high-risk sexual behavior, increased alcohol use or gambling). For many men, this additional activity is actually an approach to cope with feelings – allowing them to mask the symptoms so they don’t have to talk about them or admit they are feeling empty or unhappy. This overactivity often comes with irritability, anger, and aggression and can take a toll on marriages, relationships and strain family life. Depression is highly treatable – and many times when a man starts therapy, they respond quickly. It almost seems that as soon as my male clients begin to unpack the baggage they have been carrying around, they feel relief.

through home-visiting services, group prenatal care, pediatric care and an increase in a variety of health services. “No matter where you live in our city, you deserve to access to quality healthcare and services. This program will provide pregnant women and new moms the care and services they need to ensure their babies thrive,” said Mayor Briley in a statement. “Thank you to Metro Health for their leadership in securing this grant that will save lives and make a lasting difference for Nashville families.” 7

Recognition is a key element to treatment

Many men deny they have depression, both to themselves and to friends and family. Here are some pointers for men who think they may be feeling depressed: Acknowledge the feelings: Wound-up, over-tired, stressed-out, short-fused, worn-down – no matter what you call how you feel, depression is a real illness that requires real treatment. Understand what it really means to be depressed: It doesn’t mean you’ve failed or that it defines you or your ability to manage life. It simply means something isn’t working in your life and you need to figure out what that something is. Let go of outdated ideas of ‘being a man’: If we’re not athletic, successful in our profession or be rolling in wealth, we may feel as if we don’t measure up. Expand your definition of ‘success’ beyond the ideas traditional, antiquated ideas of masculinity. Look beyond the obvious: Mental health concerns can sometimes pose as physical health concerns. In a study of Johns Hopkins medical students, the depressed men were twice as likely as the nondepressed men to develop coronary artery disease or have a sudden cardiac death. The increased risk lasted for up to 10 years after the onset of their depression. Talk it out: If you hurt, you can be certain your spouse or partner knows it. Open up about what’s going on and be willing to work through it together. Get help: Acknowledging and seeking treatment can save your marriage – and possibly your life – so take responsibility and seek someone to talk to. For more help: contact Dr. Lisa M. Webb at the Body & Mind Consulting Associates Group: www. bodymindtn.com.

Animal wellness

Adopt, don’t shop The Nashville Humane Association is one of the oldest facilities in the area, and is committed to finding cats and dogs loving, forever homes. Editor Rachel Rowney met with the team to find out more about its programs that promote wellness for both animals and humans.

T

he Nashville Humane Association has been working in the city since the 1940s, and offers a huge range of services to the community. From pet adoptions and education to medical services to foster care for dogs and cats, this organization holds an invaluable place in the heart of Nashville. “We are one of the oldest nonprofits in Nashville,” remarks Laura Chavarria, executive director. “We have three pillars. One is adopting out homeless animals, the second is providing low-cost spay and neuter services to the public, and the third is education and raising awareness about our mission.” The center takes in around 4,000 animals each year that have either been given up or are strays. The association is the largest animal nonprofit in Nashville that focuses on adoptions. “We also step up in times of need, with puppy farms or natural disasters, we take in those animals to our program and help them find their forever home,” says Laura. The average length of stay for an animal is a month, but there are animals who have been there for a longer period. “We want to be a temporary solution for their home, we don’t want them to stay forever. Animals aren’t designed to be in a shelter, no matter how great the care is that we provide or how many times we get them out [of the shelter]. It’s important to us to provide enrichment, as the happier they are, the faster they get adopted.”

“We want to create a healthy lifestyle for the person, as well as the animal, and by taking part in the Fest, we can do all of that together. Laura explains that the Association takes its responsibility of finding forever homes for animals very seriously. This includes carrying out landlord checks and liaising with animal control to make sure there is no history of animal abuse for prospective adopters, as well as conversations with the potential new owners to make sure the animal is the right fit for them. The Humane Association encourages local people to socialize with the animals who are currently living in the center. There have been numerous studies on the positive mental health benefits of interacting with animals, as well as the physical benefits of spending time outside. It’s proven that walking and going on hikes is good for both mental and physical health, which is why the programs offered by the Nashville Humane Association are a benefit for both the animals themselves, as well as those individuals who wish to spend time with them. The organization encourages local residents to sign up and take out an animal for the day. The Nashville Humane Association often attends events to promote what it does, and to engage with people who may be interesting in adopting an animal. On June 1, the Nashville Health and Wellness Fest will be hosting ‘Puppy Pilates’ with dogs from the center, together with Julee Jones of The Pilates Place in Nashville. “We want to promote wellness and exercise,” says Lindsay Keitel, the Association’s events and outreach coordinator. “We want to create a healthy lifestyle for the person, as well as the animal, and by taking part in the Fest, we can do all of that together. Within the community, raising awareness is always a very important thing for us. We want to take part in what is going on, being out there and showing people that we are here and we support Nashville.” Laura explains that many people don’t feel comfortable visiting the shelter, so a way to encourage adoption is to take the animals out into the community, attending events such as the Nashville Health & Wellness Fest. Positive human interaction is also good for the animals themselves. “Taking part in events is beneficial for dogs who are nervous, as safe interactions build their confidence in humans.”

Don’t miss your chance to meet the puppies from the Nashville Humane Association and take part in Puppy Pilates on June 1. The team from the center will be on hand to answer questions, accept donations and explain how you can help animals looking for a new home. “We’re here and we have loving animals that need homes,” concludes Laura. Don’t miss Puppy Pilates at the Nashville Health & Wellness Fest on June 1! Meet local puppies that need to be adopted and take part in this session with Julee Jones, the owner of The Pilates Place in Nashville. Bring your pilates mat to get started at 11.30am, but please don’t bring your own dog! You can also bring donations for the Nashville Humane Association. -Hippocrates

is not your average beverage. We are committed to being the world’s most powerful food. The National Cancer Institute spent $20 million on a study depicting the anticancer compounds in fruits and vegetables and found five superstars, all being found abundantly in soy: Isoflavones, protease inhibitors, saponins, phytosterols, and phytic acids. Soy isoflavones alone not only have the ability to inhibit cancer cell growth, but have the ability to stimulate differentiation, causing cancerous cells to change back into healthy (noncancerous) cells. Haelan 951 is unparalleled in its isoflavone (especially genistein) and BBI inhibitor count. Our patented fermentation and specific growing process allows us to isolate these anticancer compounds and provide maximum nutrition. We only take the best of soy and nothing else. We know Haelan 951 can help you increase your quantity and quality of life.

Thyroid and adrenal health

It might not be just your thyroid… Dr Angelina Szuch, Banyan Healthcare, discusses the complementary nature of the adrenal and thyroid glands, and explains how any treatment plan needs to address both of them in order to achieve balance in the body. The truth is the hormones secreted from these two glands are directly related to – and impact – one another. Many people suffer from high or chronic stress, which leads to adrenal dysregulation. Poor functioning adrenals can impact your thyroid’s ability to function correctly, which can play a role in your energy levels, sleeping patterns, and your weight. In order to help one, we need to make sure the other is supported.

The Adrenal Glands

D

o you suffer from brain fog? Fatigue? Depression? Weight gain? Sleep problems? These symptoms are common in people suffering from hypothyroidism or adrenal dysregulation. So, do you have thyroid problems, adrenal problems, or both? It is common for those with adrenal dysregulation to have some degree of thyroid involvement. It is also common for those with thyroid problems to have adrenal involvement. As a matter of fact, if you have thyroid problems then you have adrenal issues. I see patients all the time that despite being on thyroid replacement, still feel lethargic and lack that zest for life they once had. Many patients are convinced that their problem is they their thyroid. How do you know if you suffer more with a thyroid problem, or have an adrenal problem?

The adrenal glands are located at the top of each kidney. The hormones produced by the adrenal glands influence every major physiological process in the body including fat, protein, carbohydrate metabolism (weight loss/gain), blood sugar regulation, inflammation control, hormone regulation and immune function. The adrenal glands are designed to enable your body to deal with stress both internally and externally. When the adrenals are compromised, it causes alterations in the body at a cellular level, resulting in changes in digestion, metabolism, disordered function of many vital organs, disturbed hormone production and impaired fluid and electrolyte balance.

The Thyroid Gland The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland produces two primary hormones called Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones are vital in regulating metabolic processes and energy expenditure. If the thyroid is compromised and becomes overactive or sluggish, you can experience unexplained weight gain, increased heart rate, changes in energy, anxiety, insomnia, lethargy, depression, hair loss and hot flashes. 33

Stress and Adrenal Dysregulation The adrenal glands produce a hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol is an important hormone that helps us respond to stress, whether it be physical, psychological or emotional. If you experience chronic stress your body’s ability to respond appropriately is reduced because the stress response is always “on.” In some people, long term sustained stress will result in the adrenal glands producing lower than normal levels of cortisol.

Impact on Thyroid function Cortisol is required to facilitate the release of TSH from the pituitary gland. When the body is in a chronic state of state of stress, the thyroid gland will slow down, producing hormones in order to slow down the metabolic process. Cortisol will also reduce the conversion of T4 to the more active T3 in an effort to conserve energy. This impact on the body’s metabolic process leads to many undesired symptoms.

Balance can be restored This article presents an oversimplification of a very complex process. The goal is to shed light on the interconnectedness of how prolonged stress impacts your adrenal and thyroid hormones. The good news is that there are tests available to assess your current adrenal function. The Adrenal Stress Index is a saliva test that measures cortisol at four different points during the day, along with other markers of stress. Knowing your body’s cortisol rhythm and if you are producing too much or too little cortisol, will help in developing a strategy to restore balance. More than anything I want you to remember the stress – adrenal – hypothyroid connection as you are working to optimize your health. For more information, visit www.banyanhealth.care

Holistic, organic cooking

Bringing Guatemalan superfoods to Nashville Editor Rachel Rowney cooks with Kassia Emily Fiedor, the author of ‘Cocina Holistica: Plant-Powered Recipes Inspired by Guatemalan Superfoods’.

K

assia Emily Fiedor opens the introduction of her cookbook ‘Cocina Holistica: Plant-Powered Recipes Inspired by Guatemalan Superfoods’ with the following question: “Why a cookbook about Guatemala?” This central American country, bordered by Mexico, Belize and El Salvador, might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of cuisine, but as Kassia explains to me, “I want people to learn about the magic of Guatemala.” Kassia studied to be a holistic nutritionist and herbalist in her native California, where she understood the importance of using natural ingredients in her recipes, before moving to Guatemala and working as a private chef. “A big part of my life in Guatemala was recognizing the many superfoods that are native or cultivated there – and reminding Guatemalans of this abundance in their country!” After an acquaintance in the Guatemalan food scene suggested she write a cookbook, Kassia began to curate her recipes. “Guatemala is such an abundant country and I wanted to create more awareness around that. I started recipe testing and farm trips, connecting with the farmers and artisans that were involved in the organic or ancestral foods movement.” Kassia explains in her book that to her, the meaning of ‘holistic’ is supporting health with “high quality, organic, local food grown with love [while] also supporting the planet.” It was for this reason that I jumped at the chance to spend the day cooking with Kassia, learning about her journey writing this book and trying out her culinary creations. After reading through her book, which features everything from ferments to soups, we decided to make her ‘Cozy Butternut Squash Casserole’ with

“All of my food is very nutrient-dense, which means that you try and pack in as many nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants as you can. You want to be eating food that is nourishing you with every bite! It’s all about quality over quantity with food as medicine.” nutmeg cashew cream, and the cashew ‘queso’ dip. The two recipes that we cooked together both utilized cashew nuts, which are often found in markets across the region, sold alongside the fruit that grows the nut itself: the cashew apple. Kassia explains that this fruit is often eaten in Guatemala and is thought to have properties that aid stomach problems and digestion. “Cashews grow all over Guatemala, and obviously we love them in the US. 34

All of my food is very nutrient-dense, which means that you try and pack in as many nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants as you can to one bite. You want to be eating food that is nourishing you with every bite! It’s all about the quality over quantity. Cashews have great healthy fats in them, with so many vitamins and nutrients. You don’t need a lot, they are very filling and dense with nourishment.”

Holistic, organic cooking

The two dishes we cook together are simple to make and absolutely delicious. Kassia hopes to use these recipes as inspiration when working with private clients and hosting cooking classes in Nashville. When it comes to her favorite recipe in the book, Kassia points to the ‘Green Mango Coco Salad’ and says that this dish was a result of inspiration from a salad found on the other side of the world. “This [recipe] was a result of me playing around with green mango, which is unripe, it’s hard and green. [Farmers] have it at the markets when it starts to come into season, so I thought I would try and create a salad with it, just like they do Papaya salad in Thailand. You peel the mango, and julienne it into noodles and shred it. It’s like a sweet, sour apple. It’s a really exotic, tropical flavor that I mix with fresh coconut, and you serve that with a tart, zesty, cashew sauce.”

Kassia is keen to point out that all the ingredients in the book, although native to Guatemala, can be found within most stores in the US. As more and more people become attuned to the importance of using organic ingredients, her book introduces a number of different recipes and approaches to food that she has discovered in her time in Guatemala and her experiences in holistic nutrition. “The book is a reflection of me, and all of the knowledge that I have developed, living in different countries, growing up in California, and healing people through my cooking. I realized people are in need of deep nourishment. The book has nutritional tidbits in it, anecdotes of my life, my story, and I think that my passion comes through, especially for holistic nutrition and healing food; food as medicine.”

“Cocina Holistica is more than a cookbook – it is a memoir that reflects my deep love for nature, travel, and true healing through food. When I travel, my passion is to infuse the native plants into my nutrientdense dishes, creating a sense of place and connection. So while this book celebrates ancestral superfoods in Guatemala, my hope is to inspire creative use of local organic or wild foods wherever you are in the world! Many vegetables will be familiar to you, but you’ll also learn about new nutritious and sustainable foods, most of which can be sourced anywhere or easily substituted. I hope to nourish your soul and your taste buds!” Meet Kassia at the Nashville Health & Wellness Fest on June 1. To find out more and book your ticket, visit www.NashvilleHealthandWellnessFest.com

Women’s Mental Health

At last a non-drug treatment for PMT, Menopause and Depression For many of the more common Women’s mental health problems, there is now an alternative to drugs. Certified LENS Neurofeedback practitioner, Sheri Rowney (pictured) reports on some recent success stories she has seen at Harmonized Brain Centers here in Nashville. Chole, - a 32 year old professional, is a busy woman; working a 50 hour week, works out daily and loves to socialize with her many friends and boyfriend for 23 days of the month. The other 5 to 7 days she suffers with PMS; raging mood swings, anxiety, migraines and feeling so tired she can hardly focus. She tried many different prescribed medications to help but they were either ineffective or had side effects worse than the symptoms. She came to Harmonized Brain Centers with little hope that we could help. We began LENS treatments once a week and within two months, her symptoms had decreased dramatically or gone away completely; leaving her free to be herself the whole month.

Denise,

W

hile most women will make time for their regular PAP smear and Mammogram, there are many others suffering the ill effects of PMS, Postpartum Depression or Menopause without realizing there is help for these too. LENS (low energy neurofeedback) could be the help you need and didn’t even know it was there. In the six months since we opened our doors here in Nashville, we have had the opportunity to help many Women, here are some of their stories:

Kendall, - a young woman of 25, was so excited to become a first time mother; reading all the books, eating healthy, doing everything she could during her

pregnancy to give her baby the best start in life. Other than the usual aches and pains, she felt great during her pregnancy and looked forward to becoming a mom. The birth went according to plan, her first attempts at breastfeeding were positive and then WHAM! About the 5th day after birth, things changed. She was tired, she was sore, her inability to soothe her baby at times had her feeling anxious and depressed. These feelings continued to get worse, day by day until she literally felt like she could not get out of bed. Her mother, looking for help, brought her in for a consultation. A few LENS treatments later, she was back to her normal self, feeling happy and positive and excited to be a new mom. 36

- a 54 year old woman was struggling through the effects of Menopause. While the doctor had prescribed hormonal replacement that had helped with the physical changes, she was still struggling with the mood imbalances, foggy brain and headaches. She came into HBC looking for hope and we were able to help. After a few weekly treatments, she was able to sleep better, felt more calm and focused and able to resume doing the things she enjoyed once again. LENS (low energy neurofeedback) is a non-invasive, easy treatment that allows the brain waves to reset; giving it the opportunity to run more effectively and efficiently. It is quick, it is painless and the results are fast. There is no need to suffer with the headaches, the fogginess, the depression and anxiety just because you’re a woman and thought you had to. Give me a call and let us help. For more information contact: Harmonized Brain Centers: 615 331 8762 www.harmonizedbraincenterstn.com. email: sheri@harmonizedbraincenterstn.com

Dental Health

Multiple Missing Teeth: What’s the Best Solution? If you are missing multiple teeth, especially molars, you may be wondering about your dental options. You want the freedom to be able to eat whatever you want. You want a stable, secure fix that won’t require unnecessary upkeep, says Jaime A. Romero Jr.

W

ith this issue, your possible solutions for multiple missing back teeth include a fixed bridge anchored to implants or a partial removable denture. Removable dentures can be uncomfortable and complicated and their materials and fabrication can get expensive. A fixed bridge is often the superior choice for a lasting and comfortable solution that feels just like your natural teeth.

Benefits of a Fixed Bridge Anchored to Implants: • They are the sole fixed solution for missing back teeth. • They are stable and secure, so you can eat anything without fear. • They preserve your natural facial appearance. • They prevent bone deterioration. • They are more comfortable than dentures. • They keep your gum line intact, eliminating metal clasps that can eat away your gum line. • They preserve your adjacent teeth. • They mimic natural teeth exactly in look and feel. • They are a permanent fix. You won’t have to deal with any upkeep other than regular hygiene. Once you’ve decided that a fixed bridge is the fix for you, what can you expect from the procedure? After your initial visit with your oral surgeon, you’ll have four to five additional visits until the final fixed bridge is attached. You may experience minor bruising, but you can treat it with over-the-counter painkillers, and you can be back to work the day after your procedure.

The Installation Process: 1. The implants are installed first, usually in a single session. You may receive a temporary bridge so you’ll have normal mouth function as soon as you leave. 2. The implants must integrate with the jawbone before you get the permanent bridge. This varies, but it is normally done one to two months after implant installation. 3. Then, the new bridge will be installed, which will handle all the pressure of natural back teeth. Permanently Restore Your Teeth If you are ready to begin the process of permanently restoring your teeth and being able to eat whatever you want, whenever you want, you should contact a trusted oral surgeon, like those at Solace Oral Surgery. A professional will help guide you through the process step-by-step so that it is as painless and straightforward as possible, customized just for you. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call Solace Oral Surgery at 615-320-1392 or visit us at www.SolaceOralSurgery.com. 38

Patient Testimonials: “I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Romero and his team at Solace. They do an incredible job of making sure you feel in charge of what’s going on and are genuinely kind, wonderful people. Couldn’t have asked for better care!” #happypatient #oralsurgery #Smile #Newsmile “Dr. Romero is great! His staff is very personable and caring and he gets you in for a consult right away. I had contacted several other doctors before being referred to Dr. Romero and they weren’t able to get me an appointment for quite a while. I had a bone graft in preparation for an implant and everything was seamless. During my consultation, he took the time to answer all of my questions and provide options for my treatment. Because I have a sales career, I could not afford to be toothless for long. He moved the process along quickly. I had no swelling, very little pain and was able to return to work 2 days after the surgery with no pain or painkillers. I highly recommend Solace Oral Surgery.” #OralSurgery #Happypatient #DrRomero #Solaceoralsurger #Dental #Dentalimplants #Implants
