MOODYMANN

SATURDAY | 10PM | BEACH STAGE

An outspoken voice in the normally nonconfrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house. Moodymann worked at several Detroit record stores in the mid-nineties including a store owned by producer Blake Baxter. During the mid-nineties Kenny was also the resident DJ at the Detroit based Outcast

Motorcycle Club. At that time he was known as "House". After his first several releases on Planet E Records Kenny became quite popular in France and from there his popularity grew. Moodymann’s sound is a hybrid form of techno/house dance music arrived at via innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's

origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases,

he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s. House will be the staple amongst his selections at SuncÊBeat this year, alongside sultry jazz, space funk, joyous disco and deep Detroit techno. We have a feeling this is one set people will remember long after Suncebeat 4 has finished and everybody has flown home.

Derrick Carter

THURSDAY | 3AM | BARBARELLAS & WELCOME BOAT

One of the pinnacles of Chicago house music's '90s wave, Derrick Carter began DJ’ing at the age of nine spinning disco records at family reunions. "When I got my driver's license at 16 my sneak ability was validated" he laughs. "I was a fierce bedroom jock for a long time. After you mix for the love of it for six or seven years, you get it pretty tight and you can take it on the road." He got by working at dance-music specialty stores like Gramaphone and gigging at parties. Later he landed regular DJ stints at Shelter, Foxy's, and Smart Bar. Since then, pioneering innovative tracks and consequent critical acclaim have repeatedly marked Derrick out as one of the most important players in dance music.

“It’s hard not to laugh on the occasions when you’ll make 20 times what you make in Chicago on a Saturday night, but back home there are also times when you just do it for fun… So many people come up to me and say ‘Man, I had the worst day, my girlfriend left me, I locked my keys in my car, but you turned it around for two hours, and that made me able to get up in the morning’ That’s the best thing going.” Derrick’s sets are deeply rooted in house, but he freely travels outside club tastes, seamlessly incorporating old-school disco, soul, jazz and whatever catches his fancy. Catch Derrick playing the Barbarellas Club and The Welcome Boat on Thursday night.

When Farina first started wandering from his passion for the purist forms of House into what grew into one of his trademark styles, Mushroom Jazz, he was playing the main room in a club in Chicago and got demoted to the B-room after playing too many Martin Luther King Jr. samples. Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other stuff that wasn't being played in the main room. However, in 1992, Mark found a welcome place for his collection of downtempo tunes accompanied by a small run of mix tapes entitled "Mushroom Jazz". Originally launched as a cassette series, the Mushroom Jazz tapes grew from the first Chicago run of 50 copies each on to the next stage, where 500 copies of several volumes were easily distributed and sought after. As the Acid Jazz boom began, he perfected his sound and fused the newest tracks from the West Coast's jazzy, organic producers with the more urban sounds he had championed in Chicago. While the predominant musical force in SF was still dark, dubby House and Wickedstyle Breaks, the city embraced the downtempo movement with a healthy bunch of live bands and DJs generating the tunes.

A pair of special ears formed their way around a small body in the city of Caen, France back in 1964. Was it their French birthing ground, their Parisian mother or their Zurich-born father that gave those ears a global sensitivity? One that would grow them into the stature they have now, nearly permanently adorned with a set of headphones?

GILLES

They were the ears of Gilles Peterson, one of the UK and the world’s most cherished DJs, a man able to gently push the fader up on the music of different continents, blending them beautifully together helping to continually open the listeners mind to new sounds. Gilles first appeared on the dial while running a pirate station From a local phone box in south London. In the late eighties, he was instrumental in the birth of acid jazz. Today, Gilles has a show on BBC Radio 6, which is syndicated to scores of radio stations around the world.

BARBARELLAS | 2.30AM | SUNDAY OTHER SETS LISTED BELOW

BEACH STAGE | 10PM | FRIDAY & Roller Boogie Boat

For fans of soulful house music, Osunlade is something of a legend. But it took many years for the producer to become an accepted force in the scene. Hailing from neither New York nor Chicago, Osunlade spent much of the '90s cutting his teeth in the major label business, crafting tracks for others, his name buried in the credits. All of that changed, however, around the turn of the millennium when he began to practice the African tradition of Ifá and struck out on his own with Yoruba Records. Since then, Osunlade has become a deep house force, working with labels like Soul Jazz, BBE and Strictly Rhythm, as well as leading an imprint that has taken plenty of influence from sounds—and artists—from around the world. Perhaps the imprint's largest success, in fact, comes from Afefe Iku, an African producer, whose "Mirror Dance" caught the ears of DJs from a variety of genres and was licensed for numerous compilations, including secretsundaze's Volume 2. Osunlade will be remembered warmly by Suncebeat regulars for his unforgettable Beach Stage performances in the previous Suncebeat venue only two years ago. This is one DJ we most certainly won’t be missing. He appears on the Unchained Rhythms Boat Party at 7pm on Sunday, followed by a set in Barbarellas at 2.30am later that night. Thankfully, that isn’t the last we see of him, as he returns for one last set on the Beach Stage at Midnight on Monday.

Timmy Regisford SATURDAY | 4AM | BARBARELLAS & THE SHELTER BOAT

15 years ago a diverse and dynamic movement was born. That movement was Shelter and the child it has grown into has shaped the future of dance music along its journey. Shelter has become well known and respected internationally for its acceptance of culture and lifestyle, and to its founding parents, music is the spiritual source. One of those founding parents, and Shelter’s resident DJ is the legendary Timmy Regisford. Timmy is

known as the Maestro, for every time he steps up to the turntables, a new journey begins. From Vice President of Motown to director of A& R at MCA Records and Atlantic Records, it could be argued that this man has single handedly kept the spirit of soul music alive. His career is multi-faceted, combining DJ, Producer, Remixer and A&R. Adding his unique touch as remixer to the works of Diana Ross, Gerald Alston, Stevie Wonder, Patti Labelle, New Addition, Bobby Womack, Gladys

Knight and The Pips and Mary J Blige to name a few, he has shaped the face of modern music. In A&R, his aptitude for finding and developing new talent has brought the likes of Blaze, Johnny Gill, Basic Black, Eric B & Rakim, Guy, Miki Howard, Ten City and Curtis Hairston to the forefront of the music scene. He has solidified label agreements with NY’s Apollo Theatre and Motown’s first UK label Funki Dred Records, headed by Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B. Timmy has never forgotten where and

why he started, and that was as a DJ. His work as a DJ has attracted the likes of Stevie Wonder and Prince to drop in for a listen. Along with DJ’s like Larry Levan, Timmy was the link between disco and a new era of house music, a tradition that he carries with him today. Timmy spins on The Shelter boat from 2pm on Saturday followed by a 2 hour set from 4am later that night in Barbarellas.

There was a brief moment—blink and you might have missed it—when Joe Claussell and his Spiritual Life Music was the flavor of the month in the UK. Slam, Terry Farley and DJ Food all repped for the man in a 1999 Jockey Slut article. Orde Meikle's quote, though, is almost all you need to know about the man who goes by the name Joaquin in his daily life: "A man who ploughs his own furrow." Men who do so rarely get caught up in the hype game. That goes double for Claussell, who never fails to remind interviewers that he never even wanted to be a DJ or producer. Encouraged by Francois K to do the former and Jerome Sydenham the latter, Claussell has excelled at both through the years, offering an idiosyncratic brand of electronic music that focuses on both body and soul.

Joe Claussell SATURDAY | 12PM | BEACH STAGE & Other times below

In was first back in 1996 that Joe Claussell joined Francois K and Danny Krivit to play for the legendary “Body & Soul” Sunday afternoon dance party. For 6 years, music and dance lovers from NYC and around the world came every week religiously to experience the totally unique musical journey of Classic, World, Soul, Disco, Funk, and House. The tracks are brought to an infinitely higher level by the synergy of each DJ's unique of live performance artistry and the incredible creative and conscious crowd. For the last decade to present, Joe has been constantly playing music all over the world, remixing, producing, and branching out into other genres of the art world. While in New York he began the Sacred Rhythm Party, designed to bring House and live musicians together in an intimate environment. Soon to come will be his first Internet radio show titled “ an invitation to openness” a show based on the freedom of listening to what ever speaks to him at that moment, as opposed to being at the mercy of the listening audience. Over the years he has made many frequent visits to Southport Weekender so we are expecting an overflowing dancefloor for Joe on the Beach Stage at Midnight on the Saturday night, as well as in Barbarellas at 4am on Sunday after his short sailing trip with the “Unchained Rhythms Boat Party” at 7pm earlier that day.

Motor City Drum Ensemble is the recording alias for Danillo Plessow and showcases his house and techno leanings, taking his cues from the classic deep Detroit sound and the emerging deep house sound from Berlin. Based in Germany's very own motor city Stuttgart, Danillo obviously sees these scenes from an outsiders perspective which means his music can take on these influences yet remain distinctively different and refreshingly unique. He who also makes up half of the acclaimed Inverse Cinematics production duo (Pulver/Fluid Ounce) and released his first record ynder this name aged just 16. A precocious young talent, Danilo's productions on his own Four Roses and MCDE labels, and now 2020Vision have made him one to watch from those in the know. It’s the second year running MCDE has been asked to play Suncebeat, with exceptional performances last year both on land and sea. He kicks off this year’s performances with a set on the Beach Stage at 2pm on Saturday, followed by a stint in Barbarellas at 1am later than night. Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler is one of deep house music's originators, and has been injecting soul into music since the early nineties. He is a house legend, icon, inspiration, key figure, and a true House Music Purveyor. An ambassador of the natural and instinctive 4/4 beat, Kerri's influences can be traced back to New Jersey growing up in a family of jazz musicians. His father being a respected deejay, provided Kerri with a rich background in the origins of soul, disco and the New York Underground Sound (known also as "Garage" music). Accompanying his father to the gigs, Kerri began playing records at the Rally Record Club in East Orange, New Jersey at the tender age of thirteen. Exposed to such musical creativity, it wasn't long before Kerri found himself interested in production. Since the signing of his first single "SuperLover /Get It Off" by Atlantic in 1991, Kerri began producing a prolific body of work that has helped coin him one of the most respected house producers in the world. This has been achieved by remaining true to his style. When listening to tracks such as the "Atmosphere EP" on Shelter Records and the seminal, "A Basement, Redlight and A Feeling" album on Madhouse, one has to marvel at Kerri's ability to not compromise his unique sound for commercial gain. His ability to blend tradition and innovation produces avant-garde music with soulful roots reaching back into the history of AfroAmerican music. Tradition as in the soulful roots of Jersey house, innovation as in his use of streamlined sparse arrangements and technology, Kerri masters rhythm and space piecing together vocals and instruments with uncanny precision delivering beautiful monster jams. A spiritual man, Kerri often prays before making a record. Each project is an attempt to inject his free spirit into a groove. In the expanses of his breaks the odd counter rhythm will inexplicably appear for a second and then disappear, creating fleshy excitement, not mechanical repetition. His now legendary bass-lines go from

heavy and heady to playful and quirky while remaining deliriously intoxicating. His fusions, clamped to the beat of his unique thundering kick drum, redefine house music at every turn. His hooks are loving details, paying attention to horn hits, washes of synthesizers, and catchy choruses creating songs with brutal drive. A believer in peace and harmony, Kerri blames soulful house's positive vibes for its failure to make it commercially, as its openness to influences are difficult for many to accept. Kerri is fascinated by technology and its application to creativity. He has built his own studio and spends hours creating new EFX units and sound machines. Taking a fearless leap into millennium technology, he has recently innovated new tools and employed creative ideas designed to revolutionize the way we think of traditional deejay mixing. Kerri uses his deejay sets to inject a spirit into the dance floor. More than a mere deejay spinning records, his sets are "live" during which he remixes tracks whenever he can by incorporating , video edits, reel to reels, keyboards, vocalists, percussionists, guitars, violins, horns, projector screens, laser synths or just his own excellent soulful voice. Armed with 2 lap top computers, thousands of music files, his own handmade mini-mixer and a cutting-edge imagination, Kerri has been wowing audiences around the globe while inspiring debate and envy in top industry circles about his new toys. Never straying from his roots, Kerri has proved he has remained loyal to the underground movement by producing contemporary classics like "Bar-a-Thym" and "Back To The Raw". Kerri embodies everything Suncebeat is about. You cant have Suncebeat without Kerri Chandler, and we are looking forward to spending many hours dancing to his sounds over the 7 days of music.

Three-time Grammy nominated Kenny Dope, one of the most prolific Artists of the modern music age, has been entertaining and astounding the masses alike with his fusion of house, hip-hop, Latin, jazz, soul, and broken beats. Known as a living encyclopedia of beats, Kenny Dope is a purveyor of sonic masterpieces.

dubbed Masters At Work. As the MAW sound became more pervasive in clubs, they became more sought after by artists and labels, eventually remixing and producing artists such as R. Kelly, Janet Jackson, Daft Punk, Barbara Tucker, India, Luther Vandross, BeBe Winans, George Benson and many, many more.

Born in 1970, Kenny Dope grew up in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park and by the early eighties he was absorbing the hip-hop beats that were being played at the local street parties. Along with his partner, Mike Delgado, Kenny organized a series of neighborhood parties under the Masters at Work alias, and was regularly attended by Brooklyn hero Todd Terry. In 1990 after an introduction by Terry, Kenny and DJ “Little” Louie Vega immediately hit it off and began a creative partnership appropriately

Kenny Dope’s breakthrough as a solo artist came with the recording of the breathtaking Bucketheads album in 1995. A track called “The Bomb (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)” was the standout track, fulfilling Kenny’s ambition to make something raw, something that was fun. With its driving drums, screeching sound effects and extended sample from Chicago’s “Street Player”, the song was an instant sensation on the underground and before long he was gate-crashing the European pop charts with his first major hit.

KENNY DOPE FRIDAY | 12PM | BEACH STAGE & ROLLER BOOGIE BOAT

Following the success of the Bucketheads album, Kenny took a break from his solo career, focusing on his collaborative work with Vega. The Nuyorican Soul album marked a particularly important moment, and had Kenny Dopes unerringly creative imprint written all over it. Kenny was behind every aspect of the albums creation, and tracks such as “Nautilus” were handpicked by the man himself. The albums release marked Kenny Dope’s transition into one of America’s most important contemporary producers. For the last decade Kenny Dope has had his hands full releasing literally thousands of tracks, remixing hundreds of singles, and globetrotting to DJ all over the world. In his production work, Kenny consistently shows his distinctive ability for programming superior beats while blending a myriad of music styles to deliver the ultimate mix.

With his long-established reputation as a DJ extraordinaire, Kenny showcases a melting pot of house, jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop while keeping the show colorful, energetic and soulful. While production and touring account for most of his time, Kenny has also established Kay-Dee Records with Scottish funk DJ legend Keb Darge. Kay-Dee will be the imprint for rare reissued classic funk records, “There is so much great music out there that we decided to find it and bring it to the masses”, Kenny said. Kay-Dee will also be the label that Kenny will use to featuring up and coming bands as well. Whether its sitting behind the control board, playing to his followers, or searching for the next great re-release classic, the beat master will continue to shine as the master at work.

GREGORY PORTER

SATURDAY | 10PM | BEACH STAGE

Gregory Porter discovered the music of Nat King Cole through his mother. At the age of five he wrote a song called "Once Upon A Time, I Had A Dreamboat" and recorded it onto a tape. When his mother returned home from work and heard it, she exclaimed in amazement "Boy, you sound like Nat King Cole." From that moment on, Gregory had a desire to know more about this man and his music, and spent hours playing his mother's old Cole records on his plastic Playskool record player. Since then, Gregory's passion and commitment to expressing himself through music has remained

strong, and he has developed a distinct style that ranges from jazz, funk, R&B, blues and gospel one that is soulful while still maintaining the elegance he learned from his earlier influences. Currently, Gregory has developed a show that is a tribute to the music and memory of Nat Cole. Through song and narration, the listener is invited into the life of Nat's music and how it moved the life of this young boy. He is also an original cast member of the four-time Tony nominated Broadway Musical, "It Ain't Nothin' but the Blues" and has performed in the national tour of the Broadway musical, "The Civil War."

SATURDAY | 2PM | BEACH STAGE & others below

Additionally, Gregory has performed on national television shows such as "Late Night with David Letterman," "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," and "The Today Show." More recently, in 2006, he performed at the Rose Hall with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Gregory has recorded with the world-renowned flautist Hubert Laws, collaborating on Cole's hit, "Smile," on the album "Hubert Laws Remembers the Unforgettable Nat King Cole." He has also worked with Hubert's brother and sister, Ronnie and Debra Laws, on a song called "Journey" that

receives regular airplay on jazz stations. As well as collaborating with other artists, Gregory also recorded a solo jazz and soul project, "Water Under Bridges," that is well received by his audience. In addition to frequent performances at venues in New York City, Gregory has recently toured internationally in Russia, Ukraine and South Africa, spreading his music to thousands. Keep listening for this talented young man; he has much more in store.

Baltimore’s own house don, in the form of Kohesive recordings main man Karizma. Karizma’s musical career started with him djing at age 13, doing various fashion shows and college parties. He landed a radio show on Baltimore’s college radio station WEAA, playing hip hop and at the same time was playing at various clubs around the city showing an obvious love for house music. Around this time he would often bump into DJ Spen and bug him for advice. As fate would have it Spen and Karizma would work together at radio station V103. This prompted the two to work together on Spen’s 1st Jasper street company album project. Karizma contributed the song E.B.W.2.R.T.W (Everybody wants 2 rule the world) and did drum programming on the track “Temptation”. After this Spen & Karizma worked on Kim English’s “Tommorrow”, Mary J Blige’s “Beautiful”, Kenny Bobien’s “Let me show you” and SuSu Bobien’s “Thank you”… the rest is history. Spen and Karizma (now with Basement Boys productions), went on to remix Everything but the Girl, Amira, Lenny Kravitz, Ann Nesby, Ron Carroll, Roy Ayers, Boris Dlugosh, Bob Sinclar, Kathy Brown, Jocelyn Brown and Ministers de la Funk to name a few. It was in these remixes Karizma developed the “deepah dubs” and “deepah ones” moniker for his rendition of the remixes. Flashing forward… after a healthy career of remixes and productions, Karizma struck out on his own a formed Kohesive Productions. His first production “Samma Ganni” was released on Basement boys imprint “Elphunk”. His remixes, redits and productions are heard weekly at the “Sky Lounge” bar on Thursdays, his residency in Baltimore. Many of his productions have championed the likes of Louie Vega, Simon Dunmore, Dj Spinna, Marques Wyatt, Tony Humphries and many more. Karizma is also an accomplished international DJ, one of the most innovative on the scene, who is known Southport / Suncebeat regulars as something of a modern day legend, so its a name we are always happy to see on the line-up.

VAKULA

SUNDAY | 8PM | BEACH STAGE

Until recently, Eastern Europe and Russia have been a rather blind spot on the musical map. Artists like Nina Kraviz and the earlier featured Anton Zap change this and the latest talent to emerge from the East is Vakula. He was born in the Ukranian city Konotop and became famous for holding a residency at Moscow’s Propaganda Club. His high quality releases on respected labels helped to establish his name and during the last months the name Vakula has been emerging more and more often. Vakula got his name from a character in a classic novel by the Ukranian writer Nikolay Vasilievich Gogol. Just like the writer, Vakula gets his inspiration from the Ukrainian history and nature, he remarked in an interview with MLAT. Next to influences by the tranquility and the diversity of the Ukranian nature, one can recognize influences of jazz, deephouse and dub rhythms in his music.

Franck Roger is, alongside DJ Deep and DJ Gregory, a core member of the French Deep House scene since the early 2000's, recognized for his percussive style with releases and remixes on labels such as Circus Company, Innervisions, Crosstown Rebels and his own imprints Franck Roger Productions and Real Tone Records. It must be deliciously bewildering to get recognition from those who inspired you in the very beginning. French House Music DJ - producer Franck Roger is no stranger to this feeling. When not travelling the world accepting club invitations, this devoted crate digger (don’t ask him about Serato) spends time in his Parisian studio messing with beats and loops. Never not working, Franck Roger is about to take things to another level as beat maker, a talent scout (through his Real Tone Records label), and the DJ you want to dance to. More beats, more gigs, more love.

mad mats FRI & sat | 10pm | beach stage & MIND FLUID BOAT

Stockholm club scene stalwart and worldwide record impresario DJ Mad Mats endeavours started in the mid 80’s when he left his break dancing career (Swedish champ 1985!) to become a DJ in Stockholm. In 1988 during a trip to London to experience the thriving rare groove scene he opened up his music senses to leftfield rhythms and the alternative club culture. By night when Mats is not touring the world as a freestyle, house, hip hop or even techno DJ he is running the legendary Raw Fusion club in the heart of Stockholm. The club has been running strong for over 13 years with diverse guest DJs such as Joe Claussell, Jay Dee (RIP), Kerri Chandler, Peanut Butter Wolf, Roni Size, Theo Parrish, Jazzanova, Laurent Garnier, Richard Searling and Carl Craig. The club is still dominating the Stockholm club scene and has become the most important underground dance music institution in Scandinavia. Besides the Raw Fusion party he also runs a new house night called Unhous where he together with Tooli (24:hrs) and Jonas K delivers the best in underground house music. By day he runs the internationally renowned Raw Fusion label. This record label continues to release essential nuggets that remain permanent fixtures in the record boxes of the most important DJs across the globe. As a side

project Mats also got a “little” finger in the mysterious little label called GAMM…hush hush ok :) . With a DJ career running for over 20 years, we know that this open-minded b-boy has got some serious skills and have on numerous occasions been voted Sweden’s best DJ. Last time was in 2009 when he got voted number one by leading club site Clubstockholm.se where he received over

15000 votes. With a remarkable and openminded variation he’s played everything from retro funk, soul, jazz & latin sets at Club Neo in Tokyo, soulful house at the Southport Weekender, hip hop at Turntables At The Hudson in NYC, techno at Goa & Weekend Club in Madrid, and freestyle sessions at the Electric Chair in Manchester. He has been there, done that and

wants to return for more. Check him out if you can, you wont be disappointed! Mad Mats plays at 10pm on Thursday night on the Beach Stage, again on Friday night at 10pm on the Beach Stage, and finally he jumps aboard the Mind Fluid boat party on Sunday for his third and final set of the week.

KEv Beadle TOO MANY SET TO LIST! SEE BELOW.

DJ, radio presenter, music producer and event promoter Kev Beadle’s bio reads like a journey through the halcyon years of the jazz, jazz funk and soul scene in the UK from the early 80s right through to today’s various musical manifestations. From early DJ experiences working with fellow spinners Paul Oakenfold and Trevor Fung in the early 80's, and then hooking up with Gilles Peterson and playing alongside him at various residencies including Dingwalls, The Wag, Special Branch, The Fez and the legendary Sunday night jazz sessions at The Belvedere Arms in Richmond. Through the early nineties Kev put together a serious number of compilations for various labels. These included six albums for the 'Essential Argo/Cadet Grooves' series for Charly Records, which also included two ‘Best Of’s - Terry Callier and Lou Donaldson and also the very

successful 'Capitol Rare' series for Blue Note. After a period of working at Timewarp Records in Croydon he then went on to working at two of the West End’s top vinyl outlets - Soul Jazz Records (now Sounds Of The Universe) and Mr Bongo. During his time at Mr Bongo he set up the Clean Up Record label – a small independent dance music that specialized in jazz beats, trip hop and drum & bass, releasing music from the likes of Koop, Aquasky, Valerie Etienne and Line Of Flight Productions. In 1995 the label was then picked up by independent giant One Little Indian and so Kev moved on from Soho record salesman to A&R and Label Manager at OLI right up to 2000. The Clean Up label went from strength to strength in that period and hit a major high point when original signing Line Of Flight evolved into 1 million+ sales selling indie

dance act the Sneaker Pimps. In the five year period at One Little Indian Kev was responsible for commissioning some huge club remixes for both One Little Indian and Clean Up including the anthemic Armand Van Helden remix of the Sneaker Pimp’s ‘Spin Spin Sugar’. More ‘musical boundary pushing’ compilations also followed in that period including the ‘Nu Jazz Generation’ series for both Clean Up and Vol. 2 for BBE. Aside from his many DJ residencies and worldwide guest appearances over the years, he has maintained a strong radio presence from pirate radio shows on KJazz and Starpoint in the 80’s right through to his current weekly podcast and show on internet soul and jazz station Solar Radio. He can also boast to being one of the longestrunning DJ residents at the legendary Southport Weekender where he is also the musical consultant for the events most cutting edge room – the

Beat Bar and in more recent years the extremely successful SunceBeat Festival In Croatia. With all this under his belt, Kev is not content to sit on his laurels, preferring to push the musical boundaries, create and showcase innovative new sounds rooted in soul & jazz, and with a DJ career spanning 30 years he is regarded as one of the leading tastemakers in his field. Kev begins his week by spinning on the Roller Boogie Boat at 2pm on Friday. The next day he is back at 4pm on the Beach Stage, followed by another set on the Saturday aboard the 2pm Mind Fluid Boat. Later on the Saturday at 8pm he spins again on the Beach Stage! Kev sets sail again the next day for another 2pm sailing aboard the Picnic Boat, and finally, Kev wraps up the week with the final set of Suncebeat 4 at midnight on Tuesday night.

An unsung hero of the U.K.s underground ‘dance’ music scene for two decades now, Phil Asher has managed to become not just proficient in every mode he works in, rather he has become a pioneer or scene leader in whichever field he turns his hand to. Surrounded by music and records from an early age, his Dad worked at Harlequin Records, bringing home all the latest releases to a young and eager Phil. He went on to work in Quaff Records and Vinyl Solution, two of London’s finest record stores that were instrumental in pushing house and soulful music in London. As a producer Phil Asher’s been supplying us with deep, emotive house music since the early nineties when under a variety of guises (i.e. Pascals Bongo Massive, Basic Soul, Rising Suns) his tracks first started to appear on labels like Henry St, Tomato and Basement 282. Since then Phil’s production has matured marvelously. He

has completed well in excess of 200 of his own productions, as well as innumerable remixes. In house music his beats are second to none, his influence and range incomparable in the U.K. If, for consistency and outright talent, any British producers deserved to be compared with the mighty Masters At Work it would surely be a compliment best leveled at Phil Asher and Restless Soul. Restless Soul is the production collective founded by Phil Asher and Luke MacCarthy, but whose ranks are sometimes swelled to include the likes of Modaji and Felix Hopkins amongst others. Restless Soul (as production chiefs or remixers) have been responsible for some timeless slices of dancefloor soul such as Jaymes Samuel “When It Rains” (Giant Step), “After Ours” (Chilli Funk), Bugz In The Attic “Thinkin Of You” (Bitasweet), “Piece In My Life” (Clairaudience) and brilliant current releases “Happy/Let Your Feelings Show” (2000 Black), Terri Walker “Ching, Ching” (Def Soul) and

PHIL ASHER SUNDAY | 2PM | BEACH STAGE & UNCHAINED / PICNIC BOATS

Blaze “I Think Of You” (Slip n’ Slide). They have also worked extensively on the music of artists like the Naked-affiliated Lisa Shaw, Brighton’s Bah Samba and Nathan Haines (Chilli Funk). Phil Asher’s production does not stop at the house/garage finery Restless Soul are perhaps best known for. Phil has been an integral part of the West London derived ‘broken beat’ scene since it’s inception, pushing the boundaries of dancefloor music with productions for the Laws Of Motion, People Records, Bitasweet, Archive and Fireworx imprints. He was co founder of the Co Op night (at the shockingly good Plastic People venue) alongside 4 Hero’s Dego, I.G. Culture and Demus. One of the most musically-exciting clubs to appear in the capitol in the last decade, Co Op became the essential testing ground for new material in the broken beat genre. At times it was ferocious entertainment as the DJs battled for oneupmanship using technical prowess and the

most complex rhythms imaginable to out do each other. Phil’s “Sweet and Sour” LP for French label Versatile (made under the Focus alias) accommodated many of Phil’s production styles under one roof. Combining deep electronic house, broken beat, 80s inspired boogie and memorable vocal moments, it is one of Phil’s original productions that perhaps best mirrors a Phil Asher DJ set.BEstablishing his name from early outings at one of London’s first house clubs Delirium, Phil became an extremely in demand DJ on both the national and international circuit. As well as the aforementioned Co Op, Phil played for many years alongside previous Southport Weekender guest Patrick Forge at “Inspiration Information” (Fridays weekly at Notting Hill Arts Club). He was monthly resident at Ministry Of Sound (Soul Heaven) and has guested at Garage City, Off Centre and made many trips to DJ overseas. Depending on where he’s playing, Phil’s sets can traverse deep, jazzy and vocal house, broken beat, disco, soul, Latin, jazz and funk. He is not an easy DJ to pigeonhole, but what can be said is that his sets are always spontaneous, soulful and amazingly well put together.

SUNCEBEAT 4 WHAT TO EXPECT...

Just what should you be looking forward to? Is the world class line-up? The amazing venue? The tunes? The boat parties? We asked some of last years line-up for their thoughts...

Wunderground: Sum up your Suncebeat 3 experience for us: It was an amazing experience. Boat parties are always fun! I got to see old friends, the music was amazing, I really enjoyed everyones live sets. I can't wait to do it again! What was your highlight of SunceBeat 3? The shared meals and conversations with Alex, Karizma , Spinna, Rich Medina, Dennis F, Francios K, Martin AtJazz, Big Will and too many others to name... Enlightening.... What Boat Parties where you on? Tell us about the vibe. Sarah was Captain and we were all just having a great time. Nothing but smiling faces, happy times and lots of birthdays. How do you feel about the Barbarellas club? It's amazing to play and watch the sun come up in that place. It's feels very intimate for its size. I can't wait to see how it all comes together for next year.

KERRI CHANDLER

Wunderground: Sum up your Suncebeat 3 experience for us: Without a doubt, Suncebeat 3 was one of my most personally memorable experiences as a professional DJ ever. What was your highlight of SunceBeat 3? The highlight of Suncebeat 3 for me has to be the boat party with myself, Kevin Beadle, Lefto and Karizma. The ovation we got at the end brought tears to my eyes. I'm sure someone got it on tape. Really validating. What Boat Parties where you on? Tell us about the vibe and how you enjoyed them. Myself, Kev Beadle, Lefto and Karizma. The vibe was electric, and despite each f our love for house music, we were on a different page that day playing global soul across the board and the boat was on fire sonically for the entire four hours...I was truly blown away... How do you feel about the new Barbarellas? This was my first Suncebeat, so I really have no reference for the old Barbarellas. But what I can say is that Barbarellas was one of my most enjoyable European experiences ever. The indoor/outdoor vibe, along with the phenomenal sound system made for a weekend full of unbelievable dance parties. I loved the place...

Wunderground: Sum up your Suncebeat 3 experience for us: My SunceBeat experience was pretty short as it was only one day but I still had a great time! First playing the boat party was really fun. It was cool being able to play along side of a lot of the older guys that influenced some of my musical upbringing. What was your highlight of SunceBeat 3? My highlight of SunceBeat was playing Barberellas. It was great being able to start with an empty outdoor dance floor then cultivating it into a fantastic moment with everyone dancing and really attentive to the music I was playing. It was my favorite part of the festival! What where your top 5 tracks of Suncebeat 3? 1: FunkinEvil - Night 2: Manuel Gonzales - Harmnear 3: Milk & Honey - Touch 4: Larry heard - Missing you 5: Hall & Hauff - Werk What Boat Parties where you on? SOULDYNAMIC Wunderground: Sum up your Suncebeat 3 experience for us: We proudly have been djing at the all SuncèBeat editions, this year was out 3rd one. We experienced our best times ever playing there in Croatia, we discovered something magic that we even couldn't imagine. A journey in to the name of the real love for music... We've been performing on 3 boat parties, the first on Wednesday, on Saturday and the last one on Tuesday. All of them were magic, the Wed one was special as was the first, people have been waiting that

moment since a long time, was the same for us, at the Sunset was truly emotional‌ The one on Saturday with Alex Barck, Sarah Favouritizm and Kerri Chandler was amazing, the crowd have been dancing on the dance floor for 4 hours no stop, all the djs played perfectly, absolutely unforgettable moments. The Tuesday one was really special, the last day for almost everybody in Croatia, lasts energies on 4 amazing hours in the sea. The vibe on the boat is incredible, you are so in contact with the people, they can touch you while you play, the Funktion One sound system sounds like (WOW) people scream every mix you play‌ as djs you can't ask for more when you're there.

How do you feel about the new Barbarellas? We seriously got surprised of the new location, but Barbarellas is the best news for us. That is the place for real after parties, is an open air club (that keeps the sense of the whole festival alive, specially cause we're in summertime) and has a serious capacity of more than 2000 people, so space for everybody, don't even need to talk about the amazing sound systems. 10/10 for us.

THE FIVE THINGS WE ABSOLUTELY CANT WAIT FOR AT SUNCEBEAT 4 BARBARELLAS One of the most significant changes when Suncebeat moved to its new venue last year was the Barbarellas venue. Previously a small, hot and sweaty nightclub in the heart of the daytime venue, the new Barbarelles couldn't have been more different. The new club is a completely outdoor venue, much larger with space for up to 2000 people, nestled amongst the trees some kilometers away from the main Suncebeat venue. It is in my opinion a huge improvement on the old venue. Bearing in mind I absolutely loved the old venue and you couldn't drag me out of the place until everybody had gone home and the cleaners were sweeping around my feet! This might highlight just how much I recommend the new venue! Dancing at 6am on a Sunday morning as the hot Croatian sun begins to rise into the sky to the soundtrack of Kerri Chandler dropping "Au Seve" takes some beating, and its

one of favorite memories of last year. Memories like this are hard to create and don't come often, and its only in places like the new Barbarellas that they can created. This is why it easily makes our list of one of the top things we absolutely can't wait to do at Suncebeat 4.

BOAT PARTIES Every year there is a boat party on the line-up that jumps right out and grabs you. I suppose which boat that is will be different for everybody. There are certainly plenty of contenders on the list! For us, it has to be the Kaoz boat. Kerri's boats are always fantastic and a trip to Suncebeat is never right and proper until you've spent a hour dancing in front of Kerri Chandler. The addition of both Jimpster and Franck Rodger to this boat however, was just inspired. One of our favorite DJ's, Jimpster never fails to deliver and his tune selection is always second to none. From his monthly appearances on his Freerange podcast to the last time we seen him rip the roof off the Beat Bar back in Pontins, he has given us so many great hours of entertainment. And what better way to add to that than 4 hours floating on the Adriatic? Franck Rodger is one of our favorite producers of the last while, tracks like Spread Love and Bring It Back have been on heavy rotation here in the office and it was with great delight when the Suncebeat line-ups initially came out that I seen his name on the list. It was with even greater delight that I discovered he was also playing alongside Jimpster, Kerri and Andy Ward on this boat. Definitely the boat we are most looking forward to Whats the one you are most looking forward to? Image: Soulla Petrou

MOODYMANN Whichever was you look at it, Moodymann is a legend within the dance music community. Always a character, he is never somebody that has tried to run with the norm or attempted to do the conventional thing. At times quite a controversial character, partly due to his antics of hiding behind white sheets during sets, or having hoodies pulled right over his face so he can't be seen when Djing. He claims he doesn't want to be at the centre of the crowds attention. In his own words‌ its not about him, "The talent is on the turntable". Ever the showman, one of the other more prominent features of his sets is the unique commentary he offers so willingly. Never a man to give interviews, if you want to hear him speak his mind, simply sit through one of his sets. This kind of crowd interaction is made for a Suncebeat crowd and I can't see the beach stage doing anything but loving Moodymann when he graces the decks on the Sunday night.

BEACH STAGE When Suncebeat moved venues last year, one of the things we all agreed was that we would really miss that beach stage. Spending a few hours dancing to amazing tunes on the waters edge while the sun sets out on the horizon is hard to beat and I really hoped there was something to match it at the venue. Imagine my delight when we arrived on day one last year to the all new beach stage! A similar idea only much bigger, the new beach stage was the busiest stage at the event last year, nearly always brimming with smiling faces. Over the course of the week this stage plays host to pretty much all of the names you see on the line-up so there will be plenty of sets to remember!

THE PEOPLE So we saved the best for last! Suncebeat has lots going for it. The music, the venue, the DJs, the weather, the stages‌ the list goes on. But what makes Suncebeat special are the people. It's a cliche thing you often hear bandied about, but there couldn't be a truer word said about Suncebeat. It's a small community each year, and its always the case by the time you have to leave you're on first name basis with half the attendees. Indeed, by the time you arrive you probably know half of them from the year before, its just that kind of event. Everybody comes together for seven days and nights to unite around music under the sun. It's a beautiful thing only made possible by the people who participate and who have made this place a yearly pilgrimage. You'll make friends, you'll spend hours laughing with strangers, dancing with friends and won't once feel out of the place.
