MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

OUR PERFORMANCE

E fa'atalofa atu i le paia ma le mamalu o le fono fa'aletausaga a le Pacific Health Services Hutt Valley. Malo le soifua manuia ma le lagi e mama. Warm Pacific Greetings. "When the world is in the midst of change, when adversity and opportunity are almost indistinguishable, this is the time for visionary leadership and when leaders need to look beyond the survival needs of those they're serving" Chip Conley: American NY Times Best Selling Author, Entrepreneur & Hotelier

2020 has been an extraordinary year to say the least. Covid-19 has changed the world forever. Lockdowns, social distancing, and contact tracing have become normalised in our general consciousness as the world and here in our small country of NZ engage to fight this invisible enemy. The impact and effect of the pandemic on our political, social, cultural, and economic environments cannot be understated. Our Pasifika people have suffered in so many ways but sadly, especially in the loss of loved ones due to the pandemic. However, as Chip Conley states, it is in times of adversity that we need, and see true visionary leadership. The Board is very proud of the work of our CEO and staff provided in responding to the needs of our people during the pandemic. Sadly, there appeared to be a lack of a cohesive response plan by the Government to our Pacific communities and it took our small team here in the Hutt Valley to rally support for our people in the immediate aftermath of the first Lockdown in March. PHSHV support was able to reach 25% of the Pacific population in the Hutt Valley (approx. 12,000) and this is a testament to the leadership and compassion shown by our CEO and staff. However, PHSHV did not stop there. As Chip Conley states, visionary leadership looks beyond the survival needs of those they serve. Although the pandemic slowed down life for many of us, our CEO and staff continued to build, develop and innovate our service, which bore fruit in the establishment of 3 new core programmes; Toloa Mental Health, Whanau Resilience and Wellbeing. All have 2-4 year long funding contracts. This represents a staggering 30% finance and services increase with a 35% growth in staff. I am sure you will join me in congratulating and thanking our CEO and the team for an exceptional year of work and service. We are so blessed to have such a passionate and talented team of workers who love working with our people to ensure positive healthy outcomes for our communities. This only happened due to the excellent visionary leadership of the CEO. Thank you also to all our Pasifika communities, stakeholders and funders who allow our team to do their work to an optimum level. Lastly, thank you to our Board for your visionary leadership in supporting our CEO and team throughout this difficult year. Blessed ending to the year to you all and a blessed Christmas.

Socrates summed up the business journey for Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley for 2020.

"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new" Although 2020 will always be remembered as the year of chaos with Covid-19 pandemic, often amidst uncertainty and chaos lies opportunities. As an organisation, we certainly made the most of very little opportunities there were, and we should all be proud of our achievement. The focus for 2020 was to ensure management and staff delivers on goals, actions, desired outcomes, timing resource requirements, and performance measurement described in the Business Plan. The 8 streams of work set out in the Strategic plan was categorised into 3 key development areas in the Business Plan. 1. Implement Growth & Sustainability Strategy. 2. Complete Digital Strategy and Upgrade IT Hardware. 3. Driving the Relationship strategy at Governance, management and service delivery levels. I am pleased to report that we have achieved well in all 3 areas, rolling out three new ccore services, 1) Wellbeing, 2) Toloa Primary Mental Health, 3) Whanau Resilience services. We are also improving terms and conditions for existing contracts, increasing sustainability and financial security.

Developing the Hutt Valley Pasifika Pandemic Response Plan is a milestone and well underway supported by the Post Covid-19 Tranche funding via the 2DHBs. The Pasifika Wellbeing Mobile Unit is undergoing a final fit out of equipment's and appropriate space and should be on the road in January 2021. Full upgrade of computer hardware and upgrading digital technology has placed the service in a much more advanced technology capability and readiness for any future risk of further lockdowns. Both projects are compliments of the 2020 Pacific Provider Development Fund (PPDF). Governance, management and operational relationship across stakeholders, partners and funders operates at optimum value and reaping growth benefits at all levels of the organisation. The PPDF continues to provide the backbone for financial support for development in key areas, continuous improvement program, future proofing of services and ongoing commitment to innovation. It is encouraging to finally see transformational changes that will have significant future benefits to the Pasifika people in the Hutt Valley. I take this opportunity to thank our staff, management and Board members and congratulate them all for a huge effort which resulted in another successful year. More importantly, I sincerely thank you, the Pacific community in the Hutt Valley for your ongoing support and making this a service of your choice. I wish you and your family a safe Christmas and a Prosperous 2021. Soifua, Nanai Muaau Chief Executive Officer
