The Pieces that Set the Standard In 1849, Nathaniel Cook realized the need for a standard set of chess pieces that could be used in tournaments throughout the world. In collaboration with his brother-in-law John Jaques of London (a noted ivory turner and businessman), he designed and produced a clean, functional pattern that could be manufactured at a reasonable cost. Cook and Jaques quickly secured the endorsement of Howard Staunton, the self-proclaimed world chess champion and noted Shakespearean scholar. Thus was born the Staunton Chessmen— a clean, elegant design that remains the standard for all serious, sanctioned chess competitions to this day.
