Madding Crowd…

...has taken off and with the

launch still to come!

It’s the talk of the town and what Bournemouth has needed for many years. Live music venue Madding Crowd is now open, with a slight change of plan. Dorset Music speaks to Peter Gilbert - Co Founder and Director of Madding Crowd.

Madding Crowd is hosting live music events every day. Why didn’t the big launch take place? With a few days to the opening, a legal matter arose with a local business and using their fire escape. This meant we can only open with 60 guests rather than the planned 200. How will this effect the business? It has caused chaos cancelling music acts, guest list and adjusting the marketing strategy yet the music scene has been so supportive and we have been hosting busy events with the smaller capacity. Gigs are now more intimate and offer a unique experience. On the first Sunday we opened Madding Crowd welcomed American blues act Zac Harmon and his band for their first UK gig. It was an incredible evening that we won’t forget. Our brand is ‘all about the music’ so even though we temporarily do not have the capacity to support the acts that we are booking, we feel we cannot hold back on what we are all about. This hurdle has actually created a rare opportunity for music lovers to get to see some amazing bands in a manner they are unlikely to experience again. Whe can people come and check out the latest addition to Bournemouth’s nightlife? Everyone is welcome to come in and take a look at the new facilities. We are open at 5pm every day.

Peter Gilbert

What events are you hosting? With live music every night of the week, there is something for everyone. Monday: An Evening With… a well established music act hosts the night with a variety of performers from the local scene Tuesday: Nostalgic Night - time to dance and enjoy music from yesteryear. A mix of swing plus rock and roll. Wednesday: World Music Night - from folk to urban. Thursday: Weekend Warm Up - more upbeat sets from bands and acoustic acts.

When will the venue be open a full capacity of 200? Realistically, this could take up to 2 months (October) so we are on a mission to make the most of the reduced capacity. What will make Madding Crowd a unique live music venue? Our aim is to be the place that musicians want & enjoy playing at, also to become a hub to chill and enjoy other artists. With the variety of genres and efficient marketing we hope to be here for the long run and expand into other parts of the country.

Friday: Run The Night - emerging bands take to the stage on their way into the mainstream. Saturday Party Night - bands who love to perform classic dance floor fillers. Sunday: Jazz/Blues/Funk/Soul - finish the weekend wither listening groovy live music. We’ve just had New York band PA Line perform a fantastic set as part of their UK tour plus we welcome Muffin on Saturday 25th AUGUST as well as other touring bands in the Autumn. Christmas will be busy too, plus a New Year’s Eve party that includes drink packages and group booking options. Si Genaro

ON THE BUS FESTIVAL A RETROSPECTIVE Humans have long been attracted

to tribal gatherings. It’s an instinct built deep within us all. Nothing can quite have the same positive impact than people getting together, enjoying themselves amongst others who are there for the same reason.

Ideas are exchanged, new friends met and new memories are made among old friends. On The Bus always aimed to encapsulate the feel of the original festivals and since 2012 has been successfully bringing together people to the deepest Dorset countryside. The very first year was nothing but a generator, a tent and a drunken scotsman selling burgers. With an honourable mention to the legendary zipline, which caused enough injuries within the first three hours to be removed for the weekend... Who’d have thought that ziplines and alcohol don’t mix? The years that followed echoed that of many other festivals, there have been hundreds of ‘On The Buses’ across the country over the years, many with a similar story. Hundreds of volunteers putting in hours, suppliers loaning and discounting equipment and the organisers always praying for sunshine. As On The Bus inevitably grew, the tents got bigger as did the bands and DJ’s. The

Correspondents, Goldie Lookin’ Chain, Task Force, The Mouse Outfit and The Four Owls among the performers. All ably backed up by the wealth of local artists and DJs that Dorset has to offer. Sometimes the praying for sunshine doesn’t work. In 2017 the festival fell on a particularly wet part of the season. Ticket sales were hit and, like many other small festivals, On The Bus struggled to make the ends meet. The truth is that small events without sponsors provide a backbone of culture across the nation. Without large sponsors however, it’s harder to weather the storm when it inevitably comes. On The Bus also suffered a double whammy when a stage and equipement was stolen on new years day. However the community rallied and after a crowdfunding campaign, one last party was thrown in the OTB name last month. It’s more important than ever to support these events, with festivals of all sizes seeing a downturn. These are the fields where the next great ideas are born, the next exciting bands meet and the next generation get to feel the buzz that only comes from sharing a space with your tribe. On The Bus was a hell of a ride and the final stop was worth the 7 years work to get there. From everyone who has been involved in this festival, we thank everyone who has ever supported our madcap gatherings.

THE PROCLAIMERS

Long walks and catchy tunes

With their broad Scottish accents, twin brothers Charlie and Craig sounded refreshingly different from anything else around when they first came to our attention, hitting the charts in the late 80s with anthems like ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ (later adopted by Peter Kay for a memorable charity video and single) and ‘Letter From America’. Since then a steady flow of successful albums have followed and their material took a surprising turn in 2013 when it was used in a new British musical Sunshine On Leith, taking its name from their 1988 platinum album. 11TH

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk ‘California 99’ by Savage Underdogs

American music and the endless list of US musicians have been a massive part of the musical motivation for South Coast based four-piece band the Savage Underdogs. After a trip there in 2016 frontman and lyricist, Matthew Williams brought back some ideas that would eventually lead to the band’s debut album ‘California 99’. There was already a joint appreciation of the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and punk bands like Social Distortion. The album airs storytelling lyrics vividly referencing American and historical world events with some personal stories of Matthew’s too. The album brings together four musicians who are all very adept within their own fields and when they come together, a certain chemistry takes over. The record leans heavily on

guitar-laden tracks with plenty of styles to keep things varied. They had indeed tried to embrace the classic Americana styles with a smattering of blues, but there is no shaking off the punk heartbeat that clearly pulses through Matthew William’s veins. At times they remind me of New Model Army and at times Shane McGowan’s heavy influence rears once again. There are plenty of standout moments like ‘Gypsy Queen’, the pulsating ‘Killing Fields’ and the haunting organ intro of mosh pit favourite The Churches, which leads nicely to a hidden acapella version of the title track. I would like to see these guys trying to vary things around a bit more with some experimentation and move away from their comfort zones, to bring in new elements and styles to their music. A great debut nevertheless and it is good to see a band still so passionate about delivering their own original tunes.
