Question For Current Edition

If he sees someone around he will cry but if he doesn’t, he will keep quiet.

Does sound happen if there is no one or anything to hear it?

Nma – depends on what you mean by sound. If you mean the disturbances in the air like cars, drums, etc. then yes it happens. If you mean the human perception of those disturbances which is translated into perceptions and interpretation in our brain, then no. since that requires a brain to be present.

Responses Wenenda – the presence of a hearing device (ears) in mammals, is enough proof that there is sound. Sound exists outside a hearing device. Victorsinbad – sound is natural, it vibrates even if nobody or anything is there to hear its echoes. Sound does not move with time; it comes up at any period. Mr Ayobami - whao! This is a tactical question. But take for example, in an empty church yard, a deaf drummer boy is busy playing drums, and probably there is no one in church who can hear the sound. What do we call that? Of course there was no sound because the boy was deaf so to me before you qualify anything to be a sound someone has to have heard it. Anonymous - sounds happen if there is no one to hear it. Just like the deaf, they hear no sound. Jidechukwu - If you mean “does it produce sound waves?” then yes; according to physics it does. If you mean sound in the sensual way (the way it feels), then no because hearing something is different from the sound wave and only exists when somebody is listening. Barika - the most simplified definition of sound is: hearable mechanical waves. So, if the waves created by the fall are strong enough to enter the hearing range, that’s called sound Joyce - nobody there to observe, does not mean that it was not observed by another body which transmitted the sound. In fact, the process of transmission of energy of the sound is the process in which the sound exists at all.

Phillips – for me sound happens, whether someone is there or not. Gloria – sound happens only when one is there to hear it. George – with or without anybody or anything, sound will still occur Tobi – for me, I think sound only happens when someone is around to hear it. Gabriel - it is simple.Sound happens with or without an individual to hear it. Nikky – I don’t know, but sound is when u hear it if not there is no such thing as sound. For example, I might hear a gunshot from the distance and you do not hear it. It proves that the sound actually occurred. Chris – sound is a loud bang. For someone to say “the bell sounded so loud”, means someone or people actually heard it. Ademola – of course yes. A deaf person cannot say the whole world is silent. Only his world is silent because if he enters a congregation like in church or somewhere else with all the noise going on, he doesn’t hear a sound but the sound is really there. Joan – it’s complicated to me. You know this has to do with science and I am not really a science student. Balogun – for you to qualify a loud bang to be sound, it means someone heard it. So if there is no one to hear it, it simply means the sound didn’t exist.

Kelechi – of course sound happens with or without anyone to hear it

Chinonso – for me, if there is no one to say if he heard something, it means there was nothing.

Sandra – hmm, I think sounds happen even if there is no one to hear it

Gabriel – yes, sound exists as variations of pressure in a medium, such as air.

Mr Jackson – well am not so certain about it but I think sound happens with or without someone to hear it.

Emma – yes sound sure happens but if there is no one present, it can’t be interpreted as sound

Janet – sound is called sound because we can hear it. If we can’t hear it then I assume there is no sound. Cos there is nothing to prove that it actually happened.

Maria – sound doesn’t exist when no one is there to hear it. For instance, have you ever noticed a child when he falls?

Victor – no one speaks and nothing happens without its sound being heard.so apparently, the sound didn’t happen if there was no one there.

Frank – this is a paradoxical question. For me, I think no sound has to be heard. Edward – sound may be defined as the vibration in the eardrum. So I think sound does not exist in that scenario Matthew – first of all one may not be around but if a recording device is, it will pick the sound. So sound makes its sound. Just like colour has no colour in the dark but put the light on and you see the different colours in display. Even without an eye to see colour, it exists. Mr Njoku – well I think the answer is no because the distinction “sound” requires an active participant. If no one is around to hear the sound, then there is no sound. To me is like loving someone and never telling them till they slip away. So it possibly was lust because true love never goes unrewarded and has a way of playing out. Amara – well for me it does. Tekena - sound waves will exist, but nothing will be interpreted by anyone as sound. Marcus - In my opinion, it is really like asking about faith. Can you believe in something, if you have no evidence? That’s just my own interpretation however. Joseph – to me the world shuts out whenever I close my eyes and that means no sound if you can’t hear it. Mariam – trees make sound when they fall, even if no one is there to hear them. They whisper in the forests, even if no one is there. So sound does exist even if no one is there to interpret the sound. Uche – well sound does exist even if we don’t hear it, believe it or not. Dike – well sometimes some people will hear a particular sound, while others will not. That is a proof that sounds happen, regardless of an interpreter. Kemi – Without the ear to translate what is nothing more than a disturbance in the environment (air as a medium), there is no sound. Boma – sound does not exist without an ear and brain to translate the disturbance. Tom - sound is a physical phenomenon. It is not dependent on an observer but noise is an interpretation of sound. Stephen - this is not a physics question or even a philosophy question. It’s a language question: do we want to define the word “sound” as something that makes vibrations in the air, or as something that a person hears? Same thing happens either way; it’s just a matter of how you want to define the word.

Nigerians wait with bated breath as intrigues and politicking continues at all levels

A

s the nation approaches May 29, one thing is sure; there will be a change of government. It will be the very first peaceful transition of power from one party to another in the entire history of the nation since independence. This is deserving of applause and commendation for all the players in the current political stage, led of course by President Goodluck Jonathan. Once commended, this paper is always faithful to its word. The outgoing president has by a singular phone call kept the ship of this nation still sailing. For once, the president refused to do what most of his aides and even close friends and family wanted him to do. For perhaps the only time in the past six years of his administration, he was his own man! In the light of the above, one will consider recent utterances directly or indirectly attributed to the president as being a bit unsettling. In a few occasions, the president has alluded to the fact that he could have contested the elections, even saying that he believes the elections were heavily rigged in the places where he didn’t win. One wonders what he will say to the results in the places where he won

heavily. This publication thinks that there are things that follows a leader to his grave, and if not to his grave, there are things that ought not to be said in the public for a long time, otherwise their effect can be counterproductive to the very public good we are all trying to uphold. So as May 29 approaches, we are already seeing heavy politicking and horse trading in the political stages. CVs are flying, and positions are being locked in. The President will begin to announce his aides and people are waiting to see who the new President’s men are. It is said that you cannot be better than your lieutenants. Thus we are waiting to see the men who the president will choose to bear his battle arms. We are waiting to see if there will be any Judas in the midst of them, and certainly we are waiting to see how clean the hands of these people are or have been. While this is going on, the Senate and the House or Representatives are also deep in the trenches fighting out who will be their next leaders. Frankly speaking, the concept of zoning should be abolished in our own opinion. It gives rise at best to mediocrity. Let the best

amongst the equal emerge. Zoning in our political agenda should be abolished. We should go above region, creed, religion or ethnicity in this country. Whoever is good is good. Good does not have another name! If a candidate is broad-based and enjoys support across all persuasion, then he should be the leader of whichever unit he chooses to serve. It is only those who are not sure of themselves who are afraid of challengers.

In Rivers State, we are also waiting to see who the Governor’s men will be. The rumour mills are hotting up and people are already speculating who will get what position. As in the federal space, we hope that this Rivers government will not be about the winners and those who helped the Governor. We should move away from rewarding party faithful with sensitive government positions. The people who should be employed by Governor Wike

should be the people that can get the job done. Political astuteness does not equate with governance know-how. Knowing how to mobilize voters does not suppose that the same skill can manage the economy of the state. If the political class needs to be rewarded, the governor should find a less detrimental way to do this. The state is in dire need of reforms, and the Governor should chose people who can lead the state onto the next level of development.

Wike’s Inauguration: doctrine of necessity or doctrine of moral correctness?

T

here seems to be some quiet in the discussion about how the new governor will be sworn in. The discussion on doctrines of necessity and the likes have raged on in the airwaves for now, but as we all know, there are always fine arguments on both side, but a judge ultimately will decide what will happen. Unfortunately, the judges are on vacation in Rivers state for now.

My approach to resolving this is simple. This has become an issue because the current ruling party did not win the elections. Had they won, I would ask how they would have sworn in Dakuku Peterside. What modus operandi would have been adopted in the absence of a chief judge or even the judiciary? For the sake of posterity, I think the current government should do exactly what they would

have done if their candidate had worn. Whether or not we are contesting the case in the tribunal or not, in the absence of no court enforced injunctions, we should do whatever needs to be done to swear the new governor in, perhaps get the chief justice of a state where there will be no swearing in (Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Anambra), and let him come to swear in the new governor. That is our submission.

GMB: The buck stops at ...a bit on the inauguration and the President’s table transition committees

W

e don’t think we should be telling the President-elect that the buck stops at his table, him having been a military head of state before now. The leader gets the praise and gets the cane. The recent statement from GMB that he was not aware that AIT was banned from reporting the president is not an acceptable statement. We are not saying that the president must vet and approve all decisions, but the people who work for him must

know his mind on almost every issue and should be able to act in accordance to what the man himself would have done. A Political aide does not take his initiative if that will be a conflict for the set man. The president should not say he doesn’t know. His aides are acting on his behalf, and if they goof, he should take responsibility. I guess we needed to remind the president after all that the buck stops on his table.

News in Figures One more election is to be held in Rivers state as the outgoing government of Gov. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi declares May 23 as the date for the Local Government Chairmen Elections to hold in the state. The PDP promptly called for this election to be postponed citing irresponsibility and treachery in the Governor’s decision to hold this elections now. Consequently it has boycotted the elections. Nonetheless, other political parties are already jostling and

GEJ Fires 2 top aides in 2 weeks as his administration winds down. The President had first fired the Inspector of General of police, Suleiman Abba, replacing him with Solomon Arase. I

t is always said that if you are on the outside, you do not have enough information about what informs certain decisions. Therefore we don’t have enough fact to really criticize the Governor-elect on the size of his committees. Traditionally, Rivers state committees have always been very large, the recent being a committee on Petroleum Products that had 98 members. I assumed that these people will

be walking the streets enforcing government orders hence the number. In truth, I wonder what amount of work gets done by all these people when they get into the committee. The transition committee has 58 members, and the inauguration committee also has the same number. We worry that these numbers are excessive, and at a time

mediately with Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero. The reason for the sack was not made public, but the President thanked them for their services and wished them well in their future endeavours. While tongues may not wag on the latter, it certainly has on the sack of the IGP.

unveiled about 3 weeks ago just over a week plus of his losing the election to PDP’s Nyesom Wike. This will be the third time that Princewill will be changing political alliance since his debut in 2007. He started his career with AC (now APC), then moved to the PDP after Gov. Amaechi won at the courts. He left PDP for the Labour Party in 2014 after losing out on the PDP Governorship primary ticket and in a recent interview declared that he does not see himself moving from Labour Party again. One only hopes that this news of his move back to PDP is only a rumour.

The gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in the April 11, 2015 Rivers Governorship elections, Prince Tonye Princewill, has purportedly announced his intention to cross to the PDP and fight for the chairmanship of the party at the national level. This alleged plan was

3

when the government should be thinking lean, we are seeing these large trains. We hope that indeed the amount of work that needs to be done justifies the numbers we have thrown at it. In economics, there is a law of diminishing return, and the more people thrown at a task after a point, the less productive they become and the more time it takes to accomplish the task.

4

The Labour movement in Rivers state has claimed that the Amaechi government owes them unpaid salaries for 4 months. The leaders of the civil service unions claimed that workers had not been paid since January, and consequently they decided to boycott the planned May 1 Workers day celebrations. The government, via its information commissioner denied this claim stating that all workers in the state had been paid up till March 2015, and that their April salaries will be paid shortly after. The PDP joined in the fray, asking Gov. Amaechi to pay all outstanding salaries and allowances up till May 29 when he relinquishes office.

Wike denies APC defection allegation Rivers state governor -elect, Chief Nyesom Wike has described the allegation made by the APC, that he is making moves to defect from PDP to APC as false and untrue. Wike in a statement signed by his media aide, Mr Simeon Nwakaudu, said his reported defection was a fig-

ment of APC’s imagination and a deliberate falsehood taken to comic proportion. He went further to say “he had already set up the transition and inauguration committees, which he said were respected Rivers leaders and would not be distracted by APC’s comedy”. The statement further

said, Chief Nyesom Wike (CON) got his mandate to lead Rivers state to recovery and redemption on the platform of PDP and will exercise the mandate on this noble platform”.

No Secret Employment In Rivers Civil Service- Commission The Rivers state Civil service commission has described the allegations that it was secretly employing people to create financial burden for the incoming administration as false. Sir Ngo Martyns-Yellowe, who is the chairman of the commission, said in a press briefing in his office in Port Harcourt, that the commission was not aware

of any secret employment into the civil service as every employment was guided by rules and regulations. He further explained that before any employment is made; the state governor must be aware and give his approval after which vacancies will be declared. He said the last recruitment was in August 2013 and since then

there had not been employment. He described the allegation as cheap blackmail deliberately meant to tarnish the image of the commission and the state government. Martyns- Yellowe stressed the need for members of the press to cross- check their facts before publishing.

PDP group demands dissolution of party’s NWC A group named the South- South Peoples Democratic Party Elders , has called for the dissolution of the Adamu Muazu led National Working Committee of PDP, adding that a technical committee should be constituted with immediate effect to reposition the party ahead of the elections in 2019. Chief Tamuno Tekena, the spokesman of the group said in a statement in Port Harcourt on the 1st of May 2015, that they were consulting with the leadership of the party, stressing that it

was part of efforts to consolidate the party in the region.

According to the spokesman (Tekena), they met with Chief Edwin Clark, Chief Tony Anenih to discuss how to reunite the party before the next general elections. He appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the party is firmly restructured before leaving office on May 29. The group enjoined party members to remain strong as it will fight tirelessly to reclaim the presidency come 2019.

Fuel importation: PENGASSAN tips PHRC for TAM The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN9), has tipped Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC), for a Turn around Maintenance (TAM) as it is key to the reduction of refined products importation into Nigeria. PENGASSAN said that PHRC is also a key to improving local refining capacity in the country and conserve the nation’s foreign reserves hereby enhancing the naira value. Commenting on the importance of the refinery and why it needs urgent Turn around Maintenance, PENGASSAN’s Rivers state chairman Comrade Fidelis

Ighodaye, said PHRC is made up of two refineries; the old refinery with the capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and the new with the capacity of 150,000

In further statements, Mr. Ighodaye said PHRC produces varieties of products including Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Kerosene (aviation and domestic), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO-diesel), Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO) and High Pour Fuel Oil (HPFO), unleaded gasoline produced by PHRC to meet international standard.

PDP behind Rivers political killings- APC alleges Rivers APC Chairman Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, on the 3rd of May 2015 said, “the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Rivers state has accused the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for sponsoring political killings in the state and rushing to court to stop the sitting of the Commission of Enquiry instituted by the state government to investigate the killings”. The news of the suit brought before Justice H. A. Nganjiwa of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt by the state PDP, seeking to restrain the Commission of Enquiry set up by Rivers state Government, to look into the political killings in the state, did not come to us

as a surprise as we (APC) have long before now known that they are responsible for the despicable murders. In reality, the suit is nothing but a self-indictment by the PDP, which has by so doing cleared the doubt that it is behind political violence in the state that has sent close to 100 APC members to their graves. He however, expressed disappointment on the part of Justice Nganjiwa who fell for the antics of the PDP by granting the restraining order sought by the killing party. Ikanya further said “We hold Justice Nganjiwa in high esteem and wish to ap-

Human lives are involved in the matter and we respectfully appeal to his Lordship not to create an escape route for murderers to get away. He expressed confidence that Rivers PDP’s desperate efforts to evade justice; subvert the will of Rivers people and heighten insecurity, kidnappings and other criminal activities through the instrumentality of the court would fail. Furthermore, he appealed to the good people of the state to endure the sad development for few months as PDP will be kicked out of power through legal means.

Chocolate Beverage

Do you drink any or all of these drinks occassionally?

D: Ah sister, if you no drive like that people go think say you no sabi drive o, they go just dey enter your front anyhow. ME: the pedestrians’ nko? D: they suppose pass quick na. ME: mute

As a background, I call to mind my criminology lecturer in University of Nigeria’s Faculty of Law. He stated once that every human being suffers mental illness albeit to different degrees. As such, while the naked man who has set up an imaginary sitting room at the road junction with burnt tins as his furniture is undeniably mentally ill, the banker stepping out in a Givenchy suit, with a Rado wristwatch and L’uomo sun shades into a Black 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado also suffers mental illness but to a lesser magnitude.

Nothing could have prepared me for that response. I thought that was one of the silliest answers ever given. How do you get to the point where you are trying to prove your driving skills on the road to total strangers who are likely not seeing your face and will never recognize you after that moment? And why are we afraid they would think we cannot drive just because we offered another person a right of way? Who amongst us has never had to cross the road (even with ten cars parked in your garage) to get something or greet a friend? So if we have all crossed the road at some point for whatever reason, how can we display such apathy to pedestrians?

So why this background? It seems the only explanation to why this banker, when driving on the road, will try to rush through an intersection when it is obvious another car is approaching from the left wing of the intersection and neither can pass if the intersection becomes gridlocked! Of course after this mayhem is caused at the junction, a taxi driver (the state of whose car shows he thinks nothing of a car’s appearance or health), quickly decides to pull out of the Prado’s rear driving partly on the kerb and partly on the road with a view to overtaking the Prado from the right and finding his way out of the gridlock. Of course by the time he makes it to the side of the Prado, he realizes a car with the right of way is approaching from the right wing of the intersection and so he creates another complete nuisance. The result is that at this time nobody can move anymore, but nobody will even try to reverse a little to solve the impasse. The decent fellow who decides to reverse soon realizes that a car is close behind him, so close you would think the car is trying to exchange a kiss with his car. Hmmmm!! Interesting impasse. So are we as adult drivers residing in Port Harcourt incapable of behaving ourselves on the road when there is no traffic warden? What of all the orderliness and turn taking sermons we drum down our children’s ears at home? Ok, let us assume the banker made a mistake that one time, and the next driver was also in a hurry, but this sort of thing happens again, and again, and again, and keeps happening in this city. Now whether it is because, like D, we are afraid of being looked down on or we are in a hurry or we simply have mental issues, we must all make a conscious effort to drive like sane and responsible adults. Do not worry that you may stick out like a sore thumb, the roads you ply would be grateful for one sane road user. You would also add to the number of good drivers in town and sooner or later, good drivers may be in the majority or at least share numerical equality with the bad drivers in Port Harcourt. I recall once, my older brother said to me at Onikan in Lagos “…no need ‘dragging space’ on the road, the road will not finish”. Scan the image to read on the go

Reflections from the deep

Folarin Omotade Banigbe - Philip

What does Sorry really do? S

orry is a simple yet powerful word. The utterance of it can stop a marriage from breaking; it can prevent a war from starting; it can prevent murder from being conceived. It can do a lot of things to a lot of people. However, I think the word has been misused both by the people who say it and those who receive it. When my children were much younger and they did something wrong (often time this is something which warrants that they be punished) of course I’d punish them. I normally let them know in advance that the act would be deserving of punishment when it occurs so the punishment never comes as a surprise to them. While they are serving out the punishment and I go to check on their progress, they are mostly at that time broken, and they are weeping as they say, “Daddy I am sorry, Daddy I am sorry”. Of course I know that at this time, they are sorry and even though it’s difficult for your heart not to melt as you watch those kids genuinely repentant, I still ensure that they mostly serve out their time. If I had said they will kneel down and face the wall for 10mins, they will still have to face the wall for that 10mins. The reason for this is that I don’t want them to think that sorry is a magic wand; like some kind of utterance that can simply take everything away. Fast forward: This scene happens at the home of one of my sisters, and I am sure she will not like me to say this but her kids have learnt that once they say sorry, all is forgiven, so they now use the sorry as a kind of get-out-of-jail card. They do something wrong, and as soon as their dad sets out a punishment for them you can immediately hear them crying, “Daddy I am sorry, Daddy I am sorry…” and they actually expect to be let off! When daddy refuses to let them off, they are shocked that they are not let off. This is because their mum lets them off once they say sorry. So I was watching a movie one day and as usual, I don’t know the title as I just bumped into it midway. This guy had done all kinds of things; he had hurt all sorts of people, jilted ladies, broken their hearts and minds and self-esteem. After he’s hit the rock (not that he ever meant to come back to apologise), he comes back to say sorry to this one lady. An aside, most people carry on with what they were doing until they hit the rocks and they are compelled to say sorry and most times, that sorry is forced not felt because they never really meant to say it. So this guy, when the lady would not bulge, he became angry and kept saying, “But I have said sorry now…I have said sorry now, what else do you want, what else do you want me to do?” So I thought to myself, “What does this guy think? Does he think just saying sorry is enough?” Later, the lady eventually

grudgingly forgives him but in a short while, he is back at his old tricks…and things play out all over again. When this time the lady refuses to forgive all hell broke loose. I suppose this time, Sorry was not enough! Let me digress again here and say that a lot of us humans have the same attitude towards God… We keep saying sorry with our mouth but our hearts are never sorry. We have learnt that God said He will forgive us for as many times as we say sorry yet we ignore the fact that what He also wants is for us to repent in our heart… and not just be remorseful. A lot of people are only temporarily remorseful, we are never truly convicted of whatever it is we are saying sorry for. That’s why soon enough, we return via the same route and often find out at some point that grace is ended from God and He gives us up as sons of perdition to reprobate minds, to begin to do the things that are not convenient. So back to the word SORRY. What emotions does the word sorry evoke in the mind of the hearer? Here, the hearer is the one who has been hurt, or who has been wronged. A broken heart, a broken pride, or a broken ego is a difficult thing to fix. So when the wronged person is being told sorry, what emotions do they go through? Honestly, I don’t know the answer to that for sure but let me hazard some guesses. The first thing that comes to my mind is that when a wronged person hears sorry, then he thinks his anger is justified. He feels vindicated and mollified that the person who wronged him has realised his wrong and is now working on making amends. Some people are quick to forgive the moment the object of their wrath comes to grovel before them mouthing sorry. Whether or not the sorry is heartfelt is inconsequential. They just feel that they can now be pacified to forgive simply because he

has come to say sorry. Often times, the recipient of the sorry then goes about boasting that the person who said sorry has realised his/her mistakes and has now come back to their senses. The second thing that I think happens when the act of saying and receiving sorry is witnessed is this: the recipient looks at a truly broken fellow and their heart go out to them. They feel mercy towards the person who is saying sorry, and because of this, they can easily forgive. Then there is a third: Sometimes the person who says sorry is not repentant

So back to the word SORRY. What emotions does the word sorry evoke in the mind of the hearer? Here, the hearer is the one who has been hurt, or who has been wronged. A broken heart, a broken pride, or a broken ego is a difficult thing to fix. So when the wronged person is being told sorry, what emotions do they go through? but the recipient has already made up their mind that they will forgive the individual who has hurt them. Often times, they have already forgiven so whether the person who caused the offence comes back or not, they have already been forgiven. For these sort of recipients, they are not waiting for the sorry, or the acts of repentance. They have chosen to forgive the hurt, and move on. For the first two groups, you wonder, “were they already planning to forgive the person who said sorry, or was it the

7

sorry that turned the tide?” If it was just the act of saying sorry, then how powerful is this word, and what does it do to melt the heart and make one let go of the anger and become so quick to forgive? If you ask me, I think waiting for sorry is an ego thing for the hurt. They often wait for so long that sometimes, they have to even re-manufacture the anger with sufficient venom to keep them from accepting to forgive without the actual saying of sorry. Now let’s go to the genuinely sorry. What reactions go on when a genuinely sorry person comes to ask for forgiveness of their sins? How do they really feel in the heart? Are they truly sorry? Do they really understand what they did? Do they really understand how hurtful it was for the other person? I think they do… and that is why these category of sorry sayers know that sorry is not a magic wand, rather the beginning of a healing process for the hearer. People who feel like that also know that it takes more time for the sorry to work. The person who’s been hurt has to relive the hurt, has to relive the shame they must have felt at that time; they have to deal with the burden they have been carrying and the agony they’ve been feeling; and they have to find grace from somewhere to restore the person back. I see this a lot in ‘wives and husbands’ issues where the wife is being compelled, persuaded or even pressured to forgive or accept his sorry even when her heart is not ready for it. It can be painful and it can be hurting for her and really it doesn’t even matter at that time if the husband was truly penitent or not. Forgiveness includes the act of saying sorry and the process of restoration. The baffling part for me is the act of restoration. I hope we know that to forgive someone means that we are ready

to allow the person to come back into our lives in the original position they were in before they hurt us! Now that can really be hard yet that is the true meaning of forgiveness. People say, “I forgive you but I will never forget what you did to me” I agree that it is tough and sometimes foolish to expect that we should forget the act of hurt against us. Depending on what the offense was, some of us never forget but this is what I say: when you remember the hurt, what does your heart feel? Does your heart still feel the hurt, the anger or the agony? If your heart still feels all those negative emotions, then you probably are still living with unforgiveness. You may still be holding against them the things they did to you. When you have truly forgiven someone, whenever you remember their act of hurt, it should not bring out negative emotions in you. It should only bring a feeling of satisfaction that you have released them from you mind. In fact, you are able to relate with them without any feeling of rancour and you are able to say to them, “brother, it is all in the past”. If you are able to help them, you will gladly help and in my view, that says you have forgiven and forgotten. So, in truly forgiving people, you may not forget the act but you will find that you are at peace with the situation and even the person who caused it. When we release the person and move on with our lives even without them apologising or saying sorry, what you have done is to make him now accountable to God for his offenses. Even if the person who has caused you the hurt does not realise or does not agree to say sorry, you just release him and forget the hurt. Restoration is the more difficult part of forgiveness. It’s mostly difficult for people to allow the fallen person back into their lives in the capacity he/she was before the hurt. However, that is the meaning of forgiveness, and that is what God did for us through Christ. So when I look at the process of forgiveness and particularly the restoration bit, I always marvel at God and I wonder how tough it would have been for God, if not for the fact that He loved us. The truth really is that I know it was not tough for Him to forgive us, because His love for us is forever greater than our sin against Him. We didn’t say sorry before He forgave us. We didn’t even know that we offended Him, yet whilst we were still in our sin and ignorance, He forgave us! So SORRY is not the mighty word we take it to be. Forgiveness should already be done by the one who was hurt before the person who caused the hurt appears to Scan the imsay sorry! to read What do age on the go you think?

The wax fabric; exclusively trendy “An impressive fact about the wax fabric is that whilst it can be used in the most native way, it can also be used in the most modern way.”

History of the Nigerian Nigerians who Promote and Rock the Wax Material Wax The development of the Nigerian wax could be traced back to the 16th century, where it started with the importation and exportation of the Indonesian batik Dutch prints. In the 19th century, the West Africans embraced these Dutch wax prints and began to make a cheap imitation of the prints and assimilating them into societies as part of culture of self-expression. In the 20th century, motifs of nature (plants and animals) believed to be universal to all culture was introduced. In the 1920’s, the prints began to feature community chiefs and leaders in the society, and in the 1950’s, they began to portray African heads of states and prominent politicians as design motifs. But in today’s world, we have variety of designs which shows that the Nigerian wax material is really improving and gaining ground

African fashion has been embraced by western fashion due to the sophistication and creativity that have been introduced by great African designers that have made African fashion what it is today, unlike before where African clothing were known to be an item of the museum in the western world. Africa’s fashion designers who have successfully been able to show the world the beauty of Africa’s fashion without misplacing the culture, spirit, and nature that comes with it. The likes of Deola Sagoe, Folake Folarin Coker, Lanre da Silva Ajayi, Duro Olowu, are some of the top international fashion designers who have contributed to making the wax a popular and wanted fashion brand in the foreign scene. Nigeria’s icon Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is known for always rocking the wax material and stylishly too.

How can you stretch the use of the Wax Fabric? •

T

he popular wax fabric known as Nigerian wax in and around Nigeria is a very trendy fabric. The likes of Daviva, Vlisco are the major producers of famous wax designs, the king of which is the Ankara. There are some

little ancient secrets about the designs on these fabrics that you may not know about. They tell stories; stories about life, mother-nature and also about history. Scan the image to read on the go

Today, the wax is used to make different trendy outfits from native wrapper and blouse, the normal maxi skirt and blouse for ladies and Agbada or Kaftan for the men that it was formally identified with, to the trendy outfits like mini-skirts, suits, blazers, jackets, pants, shorts, evening gowns and anything trendy you can think of. The Nigerian wax has become a real notable fashion trend in and outside Nigeria and Africa as a whole. The wax material is also remarkable for its role in Nigerian weddings where it plays a major role in making the event colourful. A Nigerian wedding without the colourful display of our wax material is a rare and equally an odd scene. The wax material which is always preserved for special occasions like weddings, is sewn into very attractive styles and worn by guests; from the aso-ebi to the rest of the house, both male and female. It is then elegantly complemented with matching beads or plain gold and silver ornaments, as suits its wearer. The wax material is also used to make accessories like necklaces, bags, shoes, hair bands, knots, earrings, wrist straps etc… they can really be used in any way you can think of and come out very stylish and really beautiful. Another discovery about the wax material is that it is recently being used to make bikinis, swimsuits, etc. and they really look nice! This means that the wax material is gradually standing tall in the fashion world, which is a good reason why we should begin to rock the wax material with all pride and pleasure.

One major argument about clothing made with the wax fabric is, should it be worn only occasionally or should it be worn everyday just like other fabrics? it’s quite obvious that here in Nigeria, we prefer to wear clothes made of other fabrics, chiefly corporate clothing (shirts, suits and other casuals like jeans, tops, blazers etc.) in running our daily activities while we leave our wax clothing for just occasions or weekends. If the wax can be transformed into something as trendy as blazers, jackets, different kinds or styles of pants and anything trendy, which could be worn to any environment, why don’t we wear them more often?

Should poems be read at swearing-in ceremonies Is it not fascinating to read poems at either the presidential or governorship swearing-in ceremony in Nigeria? Though, some might argue that this is totally at the discretion of the presidentelect or governor-elect, but it is still a positive development, and it worth it. If the United States of America could do it, I wonder what would hinder Nigeria from doing it, afterall, Nigeria borrows a leaf from the United States presidential system of government. It might interest us to know that “five times in the United States of American history, poetry has been read at presidential swearing-in ceremonies. Presidentelect John F. Kennedy personally asked celebrated American poet Robert Frost to recite a poem at

his 1961 presidential inauguration. An elated Frost agreed and read “The Gift Outright”,

All of these poems are beautiful works of art, but have also become political documents, speaking to specific moments of time making him the first inaugural poet in the history of the event”. What a great privilege for Frost!

However, poetry read at presidential-swearing ceremony did not end with John F. Kennedy. During the first term of president-elect Bill Clinton, he asked a woman poet, Maya Angelou to read her work. The woman gladly read her work, “On the Pulse of Morning” for Clinton’s inauguration in 1993. In 1997, when Clinton was re-elected, he again asked a poet, fellow Arkansas native by name, Miller Williams, to read for the inauguration. Miller Williams composed and read “Of History and Hope” for the occasion. Barack Obama was not left out, in this show of love for poetry. In 2009, when he was inaugurated, he also asked poet Elizabeth Alexander to read her origi-

nal work, “Praise Song for the Day” and she did. Following Barack Obama’s re-election, poet Richard Blanco read his masterpiece “One Today” a new poem he wrote for the 2013 inauguration. All of these poems are beautiful works of art, but have also become political documents, speaking to specific moments of time in the United States. Robert Frost certainly reflected Kennedy’s background of New England pride and prominence. By asking Maya Angelou to read, Bill Clinton started his presidency speaking to the power of diversity and inclusion in a true democracy. The choice of Richard Blanco as an inaugural poet reflected Barack Obama’s emphasis on equality, unity etc, in his inaugural address. The newest in America’s inaugural history, Richard Blanco is the first Latino inaugural poet. His poetry works, including “One Today” is thematically preoccupied with issues of identity. He has this to say “…Regardless of my cultural, social-economic background and my sexuality, I have been given a place at the table, or more precisely at the podium, because that is America.” Who will be the first inaugural poet to recite a poem at the inauguration of president-elect Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria or governor-elect Nyesom Wike of Rivers State come May 29?

Should the incoming government in Rivers State continue with the mono-rail project? “I will advise the new government in the state to continue with the project because a lot of money have been invested. If left undone, it means we as a state don’t want to move forward. It also means that any government that succeeds the other, should abandon projects that were not completed by the previous government, of course you know that’s not good for the state”

NNAMDI (30) I’m of the opinion that they should continue with the project, but according to the alleged report, the state government would have channeled the fund sank into the project to establish industries so as to crate job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths of the state.

ETIM UDOH (26) To me I think the mono-rail project is a waste of state fund. They should have invested that money to road construction.

MRS. JUDITH OSUJI (41) I will advise the new government in the state to continue with the project because a lot of money have been invested. If left undone, it means we as a state don’t want to move forward. It also means that any government that succeeds the other, should abandon projects that were not completed by the previous government, of course you know that’s not good for the state. DELCEY (20) Personally, I would love to take a ride on the train so I would not be in support of the new administration to abandon it, they should continue from where governor Amaechi stopped. USHIE JOHN (29) I live around that area, so I want to witness the completion of that project.

PAUL (25) They should continue with the project because it is targeted at solving the perennial traffic congestion in Port Harcourt the third largest city in Nigeria.

MODESTUS (30) The mono-rail project is a complex one and the only solution is for the incoming government to be willing to complete it so as to benefit the people of the state.

CHIEF NNAMDI (48) The monorail project is an avenue for the state government to enrich itself. The distance the project covers is too short; it should have been from UTC to waterline or GRA. The incoming government should think of something better.

JOHNPAUL (28) I think the government of Amaechi is biting more than it can chew. There are no roads, no flyovers, no drainage and so on, then you embark on a project that only developed countries with good roads have. The new government should pay attention to matters that are of importance to the people.

they help alleviate traffic problems and should be encouraged by all. More of it is needed in Nigeria.

OBINNA (22) I think they should abandon the project because since it started in October 2009, one hitch or the other has crippled the completion of its phase as scheduled.

MR KEN (34) Personally I would advise the incoming government to continue with the project, but extend the distance. It’s a welcome development to our transport sector.

BETHEL AMADI (31) I have never liked the idea of the mono-rail project from the start. I mean look at our roads, it’s a mess. So my advice for the incoming government is to focus on issues that are pressing to the society.

Dr. ADEOLA (38) No, the incoming government should go ahead and finish the mono-rail project because if we want the state go grow in terms of modern facilities, wasting funds will not help us achieve that.

JUSTICE (25) There are many things in this state that requires attention. Eg, our roads. Yes the mono-rail is expected to reduce or help traffic situation, but the distance it covers is not wide enough.

CHARLES MADU (26) The incoming government should not abandon the mono-rail project. Political rivalry shouldn’t come in between the growth and development of the state.

MRS. OBIOMA (31) Well that would be another government unfinished project, so I think the new government should finish it. It will also prove to be a change in Nigerian government.

UZOMA (29) From my own point of view, the mono-rail project is a waste of public fund. If the government wants to do such project, they should have started from mile 1 to rumuola, this is because you have a good number of people working between these areas.

MATHEW (29) For me, I think it’s a waste of money because our roads need maintenance eg, Eleme,Woji, Elelenwo and others. These are places people use everyday not mono-rail.

Barr. GODWIN (40) I think the present government have spent a lot of money on that project and yet it hasn’t been finished. My advice for the new government is to set top most priority first that will benefit the people, may be later the mono-rail project can kick off.

BOMA (22) Even if it makes sense or not, the new government has to finish it. We can’t keep wasting fund like that and expect to progress as a state.

MICHEAL (20) For me, the monorail project is a nice thing so I advice the incoming government not to abandon it. It’s a plus to our transport sector.

Tea

11

STELLA (27) It’s a good project and I think the incoming government should complete it.

STANLEY (20) I think the project is worth finishing. MAUREEN (28) As far as am concerned, that’s a waste of fund because it doesn’t cover a reasonable distance. MR. JUDE NWACHUKWU (47) Such things exist in other countries,

Coffee

SAMUEL (23) The mono-rail project has to continue by the new government because the project remains a high caliber technical project undertaken by the current administration to ease traffic gridlock often experienced in Port Harcourt road. MAXWELL (26) The new government should spend time to plan and make sure the project gets back on track and completed in due course. Dr. RAPHEL (40) I call the mono-rail a death trap. Yes I will not take such risk riding on it, so I want the incoming government to abandon it and face reality. ESE (32) I think the incoming government should abandon the monorail project because there are so many roads in Port Harcourt that needs to be taken care of. Besides the place the mono-rail is located have good roads. LELAP (30) I will like the incoming government to continue with the project as it will reduce the rate Nigerians buy cars. JOY (25) Before one get to the train station, the person will take the road, and it is only someone that is healthy that can be on the road. So I think the present government is doing things upside down. First the health of those that will use the mono-rail should be in check, the road at which they would take to get to the train station should

be constructed and then you can think of a project of such magnitude. The incoming government should have step by step plan on making the lives of the people in the state worth living. OBOLI FRANCIS (28) Mono-rail that leads to nowhere is a white elephant project. Amaechi should have learnt from Lagos and Abuja who are building light rails. He should have been forced to resign on that very wasteful mis-adventure. Tens of billions of naira, gone down the drain just like that. I don’t expect the incoming government to continue with the project. MARTIN C (31) I do not celebrate senseless, non-viable, white elephant projects. Wike should please neglect this project because it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money and Amaechi should be probed based on the project. MICHEAL WEST (35) what’s the noise about this mono-rail? Just from Aggrey road/lagos bus stop to UTC bus stop, a distance of less than 1km. who is deceiving who? The incoming administration should please neglect the project and focus on things that will have direct effect on an average Riverine. IDRIS MALIK (27) I think they should convert the mono-rail to light rail, so it can run side by side Aba road down to Eleme junction; doing that will have cost less and add more economic value to the people. That’s an advice for the incoming government. AMAKA IGWE (20) The mono-rail is a multiphase project that will take people from town to oyigbo. The only bad thing about it is that only phase1 will be finished by the time he leaves. Aside that, it’s a commendable project and I will suggest the incoming government should continue with the project plan and see it to the finish. ODION JOSEPH (29) I wish the next governor can follow this through. Imagine the project running down Ikwerre road, Aba road to garrison and on into trans-amadi .A ground light rail running the full stretch of Aba road and another running the full stretch of east-west road, from Eleme junction to Mbiama junction would have make more economic sense to me. Notwithstanding, I advice Wike to complete the project for the benefit and development of River state. KELVIN (30) For me, it is a wasted money and project and that’s one of the things that made me not to rate Amaechi tenure so well. if the properties there can be sold and use the money for something much more better. i think it is better that way, than the incoming government to just abandon it like that and later thieves will go there and steal the materials. Mr. CHARLES (35) I wish the incoming government can work on it and proof to us that the past administration really over spent a lot on the project with that kind of small distance covered. the money spent is not justified at all.

As Wike takes over, Rivers opinion leaders speak on the new Rivers they will like to see! Scan the image to read on the go

A

few days into the dawn of a new Rivers State Government, people in the state are debating what kind of direction the new government will take. There is one consensus, Rivers needs more development. Rivers also needs jobs and more important, Rivers needs to be a safe place to live and do business.

We asked a few opinion leaders in the city of Port Harcourt what would be their yardstick for rating the administration of Barrister Nyesom Wike as being successful. We bring you some of the responses to this all important question in this edition. In the next edition, which will be inauguration edition of the new administrations, we bring

I will want the incoming government to ensure steady power supply in Rivers State. This will be a catalyst for development as people can now think of what they can do to emancipate themselves. Remember before God started creation, he said let there be light meaning that he knows how important light is to the actualization of his creation project. Our leaders should learn from that and know that without light in a house, you cannot see, not to even talk of doing something useful. So for us to go out of this blind state we are, and for each and every one of us to achieve our desired dreams, we must have light. That is my own yardstick for measuring the success of this administration Engr. Steve Osuoha CEO Prokleen Nigeria Limited

I would like the new government to focus on creating value in the provision of infrastructure for special needs children and the underprivileged. One of the things that should be done is to provide a model center for the special needs students, such that comes with the complete set of infrastructure that can promote inclusive learning. At the minimum, a refurbishment of the current States Special Needs School at Creek Road needs to be undertaken urgently as the condition of living and learning in that place is abject at the moment. It is not only the building of the infrastructure, but also the conscious development of human resources to provide training for this teaming population of special needs children in our society. Bitebo Gogo Executive Director, Keeping IT Real (KIR) Foundation

I will like the state secretariat to be very functional with all attendant modern facilities, where individuals can walk into a government owned establishment and walk out accomplishing all they have anticipated within 30 minutes. I would also want a situation whereby the Civil Service will have a well-structured system such as can compete with the private sector. If that can be accomplished by the Governor, then I will say the government is successful. Mr. Joseph Obiazi President/ CEO Fine Home Global Concept Ltd. Distributors of Dunn Edwards Paint Africa

even more responses from people. The task ahead is herculean, but people want what they want, and in an environment like ours, it is believed that whatever has been done by the past administration is just the tip of the iceberg. More is required, more is wanted.

The incoming administration of Rivers State should try to make electricity available for the citizenry of the state. If electricity is available, a lot other things will fall into place as it concerns the well-being of the rivers people, indigenes and non-indigenes alike. With adequate electricity supply, the total dependence on fuel will be drastically reduced; business will make more returns since most of their incomes are spent on fuelling generators; noise pollution (from generator noise) will be eliminated and a lot of people will be encouraged to go into small scale business. Students on the other hand will be more productive, since reading at night is not only stressful but dangerous with generators. With power supply, reading will be a lot easier. Dr. Samuel S. Ogunbiyi Department of Finance & Banking, University of Port Harcourt The last two years in Rivers State has seen terrible divisions in the state.... politically speaking. The polarization has been unimaginable. Rivers state is naturally a place with several divisions based on the plurality of ethnic nationalities and the upland/ riverine dichotomy. The politics of the last two years mainly festered by the war between Amaechi and The President and his wife has dragged the state into avoidable turmoil with considerable collateral damage. The legislature is comatose and the judiciary is practically non-existent. So (Governor) Wike is inheriting a deeply divided state. His major first task will be to heal the state of these divides and ensure that peace and unity is returned to the state. When this harmony is achieved, government can now focus on its developmental agenda and ensure that the resources of the state are properly channelled into the areas where they are needed the most. Consequently as I see it, Peace, unity and cohesion first. Then all other things can follow. Mr Onyebuchi Ememanka, Legal Practitioner/Political Analyst and Legal advisor to Samsung Nigeria.

Electricity is a big deal here, for God’s sake Rivers state produces gas through the LNG. We shouldn’t even complain of lack of power at all. I expect the incoming government to deal with that first of all. Mr Dayo Ibitoye Digital Media consultant/Content Coordinator Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND)

Currently, the hardship being faced by the average Rivers resident is excruciating and spans all areas, so a cohesive analysis of the areas where most pain is being experienced and a systematic alleviation of these pains will make this government seen as a successful government by all and sundry.

If the government tackles the security challenges, then they will have been successful from my own point of view. This is because even when a company wants to carry out some form of community service in her environment to make life easier for the communities, one is usually harassed by the community youths and there is nothing one can do. Sometimes, you can’t move around as you want just so as not to be noticed by these boys because of the security situation. The outgoing government did their best but I feel more can be done. In addition, an even though this is a federal task, the policing system has to be sanitised so we can faithful and committed policemen who will stop extorting the citizenry.

Mr Peter Mojuetan (FF) President/Founder, Peter Mojuetan Foundation

Mr Felix Chief Accountant, Joan Services Limited.

The one thing the new government needs to focus on is the immediate identification and implementation of palliatives at all levels. These are the things I will consider as low hanging fruits- things that can be easily and quickly done to improve the social and economic condition of the masses of the state. After this has been done, long term strategy formulation and developmental agenda can be introduced.

I would like the new government to complete every project the past government started. There is a problem of unfinished projects in Nigeria today causing a lack of continuity in the system. New governments leave old projects and start new ones. This shouldn’t be as it is one state we are trying to improve. When the new government is able to complete the old projects even while they bring up new ones according to their manifesto, then we can say we are gradually making progress Uche Iloama Banker I would like the new government to tackle the issue of indiscipline in the society. People around here generally behave irresponsibly. Examples abound; over speeding; overtaking at wrong points; and the use of sirens illegally by some government officials. All these show indiscipline and the root cause of our failure is indiscipline. We have always said that the dividend of democracy ends up in private pockets; that’s the height of Indiscipline in the system. Corruption is a product of indiscipline. If the government can instil discipline in the society covering both the high and the low as an attitude that should be prevalent and as a way of life binding on all citizens, then they would have gone a long way in effecting a positive impact in society and once can say it they have been successful as an administration. Mr Okpare Sunday

The outgoing regime has done a lot in terms of infrastructure provisioning and I will like the incoming governor to continue with this emphasis on infrastructure provision but should incorporate proper maintenance policies to extend the life of the infrastructure. I will also like him to incorporate manpower development at all levels in his agenda. He should endeavour to complete all viable on-going projects, and not just abandoning them to start new ones. I am particularly interested in the completion of Woji-Elelenwo bridge linking TransAmadi and Trans-Woji because once it’s completed it will decongest Trans-Amadi Mr Kareem Davies General Manager Lumbegh Services Ltd.

I just want peace in the state. As we all know, there has been tension between the PDP and the APC in the state. The issues should be sorted out and peace restored to the state. If the Governor can sort out the security problems in the state such that we can have peace, then he has done well in my own opinion. Mr Phillip Managing Director, PU global engineering services Ltd I just want security and stability in the state

The new Rivers governor should improve and expand the economy of the state Ibifiri Bob-Manuel Managing Director Bob-Manuel Group of Companies

Hon Arthur Uchendu. In my opinion, the one thing governor Wike should do to be considered successful is to generate employment. He should revitalize the people by investing more into Agriculture. Singapore as a country I know depends on this and that is what they live on. Mr. Baron Onuakalusi Chineze CEO O’barons Clothing

10 Ways to handle rumours and gossip 7

. Speak to someone about it: if you feel threatened, it’s advisable to speak to a higher authority like parent, principal or teacher about it. For some teens are not aware of how rumors hurt other people’s lives and feelings.

tion. Then, when the person fails to provide these details, you can just say, “Wow, all of it sounds pretty vague. Are you sure about it?” You’re making it clear that you have doubts about what you are hearing without attacking the person who is telling you.

In every rumor there is believed to be some atom of truth. However, in a case where you have been accused falsely of a crime you didn’t commit, how do you handle such issue especially when the rumors are growing rapidly and people are beginning to point fingers at you? Here are some tips to handling gossip.

1

. Don’t partake in gossiping yourself: Keep out of gossiping and any conversation which involve badmouthing and putting others down. Take heed of the old sayings ‘If you haven’t anything nice to say, don’t say anything, If something does not concern you and it isn’t your business, don’t be nosy and don’t gos-

2

. Confront the source: Go to the source of the problem and find out who created the rumor and spread it. Make sure you are totally calm before you do it. Ask why the person spread the rumors. As a lot of rumors start from one miscommunication that turns into a bigger problem. Gossip is normally based on lies, someone wanting to feel better about themselves, by hurting someone else. You’re better than that, so after confronting the source, you let it go, they’ll get bored and move on. Also, be polite to the person who spread the rumor to show that you are the better person.

4

. Continue to live your life as if nothing ever happened: Live your life so that people will know the rumor is not true. Rumors are a form of social bullying and it is important that you don’t let the bullying affect your life. Rumors can really hurt but remember not to lose your cool. People will soon find something else to talk about.

5

. Don’t tell everyone everything about your personal life: Remember be extra careful who you confide in, as not everyone keeps information to themselves and plus you never know who might be hearing and looking.

3

.

Verify via questions: If you feel you can’t avoid the gossip and you can’t change the subject, at least try to verify the information you’re hearing. Ask about details about places and times. Often, like the urban legends that permeate email, rumors and gossip are only general and have no specifics. By asking about details, you are subtly forcing the issue because the person who can’t provide any details is tacitly acknowledging the weakness and lack of credibility of that informa-

6

. Don’t break down. Don’t show the gossip-mongers you are angry, defensive or upset, it can give them the morsels that you have something to hide. The best way is to be calm, honest but concise.

O O L A P I C N I R P Y P G Y I B

F O B F J L T Z V D O H O R T M R L

. Forgive, but don’t forget. After the rumors have gone down, the spreader will probably want to be your friend. Refuse the offer, even if you don’t want to, so that people won’t want to mess with you and also the person wouldn’t have any further rumor to spread about your personal life. The single best way to avoid having gossip told about you is to stay away from the kinds of people who tell mean gossip! As popular or cool as they may seem, these people are sad and desperate. They can’t have a good time without spreading hurtful rumors about someone else. Don’t bother with them. Find friends who don’t get enjoyment from hurting people. Remember a friend who stabs you in the back by telling a nasty rumor isn’t much of a friend at all.

9

. Remember gossiping and blabbing does not earn you any friends and also gossiping and blabbing can cost you your friends. It doesn’t only damage reputation and relationships but can also land you in serious trouble.

10

. Above everything, stay calm. People love to see a reaction. You staying calm will help kill the rumor and will help you with similar instances in the future. Try and act like it doesn’t bother you and if it does don’t show it. Keep your head up high. Prestige is very important when it comes to handling gossips. If as soon as you hear a gossip about you and become mad, confront them or threaten them, then this will only show them how badly you are hurt by the gossip and how fragile you are. NOTE: if someone tells you something in confidence - Always keep that information told to you to yourself.

Question for next edition Have you ever lied to your best friend? Why?

Responses from last edition Israel (Age16): I think girls gossip more. Actually, girls gossip to a wider circle of people. Boys do gossip, but only to a few selected mates. And boys tend to stretch the truth a bit more too! Amaka (Age 15): I think this depends on the topic. If it’s about shopping, fashion, food or image then I’d categorically say it’s the females who have a bad case of verbal diarrhea. It is a general rule that women get together to bitch and gossip while guys get together to tell bad jokes and yell absentees at each other, over who is the best footballer (or team)! Charity (Age 17): I used to think girls gossiped more, but lately I have come across quite a few guys who gossip so much, it’s not even funny! So now I have to say that definitely guys gossip more. I think they just hide it a little more than girls do, so we haven’t all caught on yet; to how gossipy guys really. Amara (Age 18): Who gossips more? Well it’s very easy to say, when you think about it. The fact is girls like to upstage each other and make themselves the centre of attention. Whereas guys don’t feel the need to gossip about other people, spread rumors or make fun of someone. Guys are simply too preoccupied with talking about serious issues like who won the match over the weekend. We don’t mind listening to gossip! Girls are the ones who love to tell a story. I think it’s because girls get more of a kick talking about relationships and ‘who’s dating who’. Harmony (Age 15): Both males and females are equally responsible for major gossiping. The standard response would be that girls gossip more, but look more carefully into the situation and we’ll find that guys will gossip equally as much, but probably with a different focus. Let’s take into consideration the gossip topic, for I believe that both males and females are actually gossiping about the same thing but for different reasons, and that topic is girls! Emmanuella (Age 17): I think girls gossip more, particularly in group format. For example, at girlfriend’s houses, on the phone, email, trashy magazines - gossip we love! But let’s not exclude the males here! They love a good gossip session just as much as we do, but would never admit it! They are more in the gossip closet, so to speak, and think that talking about other people, footy clubs and work politics is just general chitchat! But we know better! Edward (Age 16): I think both guys and girls gossip equally but it is the topic of gossip which differs. Guys tend to gossip about work and sport, whereas girls love to gossip about work and other people’s love lives, to name a few. Debby (Age 17): Both are the same! Guys gossip to each other about girls, sex and irrelevant stuff. My brother is the biggest gossip. He talks about all the people in his class and school; the girls and has a real interest in knowing ‘who said what about who’ and ‘who kissed who’? When one guy in his class kissed the girl he liked. Girls gossip about clothes, makeup and each other. I think both can do just as much damage.

Introducing the most healthy everyday drink company in the world…

G

anoderma lucidum is a type of mushroom that grows on wood and used extensively in traditional Asian medicines to promote health and longevity. Traditional Asian medical science explains that the body needs to defend itself against threats to its equilibrium. These threats can be physical, such as viruses and bacteria that cause infection ; emotional , such as stressors that cause anxiety; or energetic, in that they reduce alertness. Ganoderma helps the body maintain its defence against these threats to its equilibrium, helping the body to maintain balance. If you want counsel on health and longevity , the Chinese folks are the right people to give you that counsel. It’s no news that they often live longer than people from other countries and have a knack for healthy living. In China , Ganoderma is called lingzhi which represents a combination of spiritual potency and essence of immortality. Among cultivated mushrooms, Ganoderma is unique in that it not only has nutritional benefits but has huge medicinal value too. Ganoderma is known for alkalizing and oxygenating the body, thereby promoting good health and eliminating the risk of arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. A body with sufficient oxygen can hardly accommodate diseases. Ganoderma does a good job of oxygenating the body and adjusting the PH to a healthy balance.

WHY DO PEOPLE GET SICK? •

Body exposure to toxins. Toxins are anything in excess or not needed by the body. Ganoderma improves cellular activity and minimises damage to the immune system due to chemotherapy. Polysaccharides, the active substance of Ganoderma, enhances the growth and multiplication of the immune cells. At the same time, they can activate lymphocyte generating stimulating factors to break down telomerase activity and accelerate the death of cancer cells. It promotes detoxification and inhibits the growth and metastasis of cancer cells. The number one cause of cancer is lack of oxygen in the cellular environment because cancer cells are anaerobic. Since Ganoderma oxygenates the body, it’s obviously an anti-cancer substanc HIV/AIDS. Ganoderma helps control the HIV virus in affected patients by boosting their immune system. URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS. Ganoderma extract helps in supporting the immune system and clearing up the symptoms. Ganoderma helps to protect the liver from disease and also detoxifies harmful substances. For patients with chronic diseases like cirrhosis or hepatitis, it can help cleanse the liver and decrease physical symptoms of the disease. It also helps improve liver function in people that have suffered chronic drug abuse or alcohol abuse.

Metro dad said. My Dad really hasn’t had a regular job since he started his music career. He sings highlife music at occasions especially weddings and gets a good pay. My Dad though handsome with his all white beards and skulled barbed head, isn’t exactly a go –getter. Things must be really desperate if he’s thinking about getting another job. I was just about to say something when Kosi said anxiously. “I can also get a job, am really good with computers, I’m sure I’ll get hired in a cyber café or something”. “My son, I understand that you want to help out but it’s not possible because you’re still going to school. Maybe you can help when you’re done with secondary school. For now you can only be useful by studying hard and making good results”. Dad said smiling and continued, “I think your elder sister and I can handle this”. “What if we don’t find work?” I asked. “We have to my daughter”, he said in a tone that made me start to worry for real.

May 2, Friday Tonight we had a family meeting. Kosi and I arrived in the sitting room to find Dad sitting with his head in his hands. Lying on the wooden stool in front of him were stacks of bills. Some of which included NEPA bills. “Dad what are all these!” I said at the sight of the bills. “All these need to be paid?” Kosi exclaimed further. “Umu m”, Dad started. “We need to talk”. Kosi and I melted into the worn black leather cushion chair. “You see, with your mother away”, Dad said refusing to emphasize on the word ‘jail’- “things might get a little tight financially”. I inhaled deeply and Dad got defensive. “Candles are discretionary items I.J. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but people don’t need them for light anymore”. The news on the candle business didn’t surprise me. The candles use to be very popular before people did away with them as rechargeable lamps and phones with touch lights came into existence. My dad interrupted my thoughts. “We’re each going to do what we can; you and I are going to need to think about getting a job”. “But what about my screenwriting”, I protested. “How will I write if I have to become a sales girl or something?” “Your old enough, you need to get a reasonable job at least to support the family, don’t you think”, Dad said in a harsh deep voice. I wasn’t really buying the idea. I’ve never liked the fact of going to work. I’ve always said I’ll marry a rich husband so I don’t have to work. “Don’t worry my children, all will be well. I’m also looking for a well-paid job”,

I’m not resentful or anything, but I can’t help but think that other people my age probably spend their holidays having fun. They probably go outside a lot (which has never been my forte). Not me, I get dumped by my boyfriend and all my friends, my mother goes to jail and to top it all, I get saddled with my family’s financial problems. It’s a good thing we screenwriters tend to be strong-minded survivors. May 7, Wednesday Things are looking up! I got an email. It’s the first time I’m hearing from him since he went away. He hasn’t met anyone else! He typed the email right after left so he hadn’t had time to be around a lot of other girls, but still. Some parts of the email are too

confidential to discuss. The rest is quite touching and nice too. Dear I.J, I know that we won’t see each other for a long time. Maybe you’ll move, or I will but nothing could ever change how I feel about you. We almost shared one of the most important moments of our lives (or at least we tried to) together. That’s a permanent bond. I especially hate to be leaving when things are so hard for you, you know, with your mum’s situation and everything. But at least she was working for good course. My parents want me to study in Canada instead of Nigeria University NSUKA we initially thought about. After now I’ll be really busy with the preparation of my documents and other stuffs for my school. So I’m not sure I’ll email but I’ll be thinking about you. Love Rabbit. He’s the greatest guy ever. If he didn’t have to go, I’m sure we would have gotten even more serious about each other and I wouldn’t be the last virgin of my generation. Rabbit and I met at a supermarket last year November. That afternoon was unusually breezy unlike the Nigerian weather at that time of the year. I took that as a sign that we’re meant to be together. Since we got together, we had never actually really been together; if you know what I mean. Every time we got the chance, something always interfered. Like the snake incident for instance. I wonder what he meant by moving on.

30 minutes later I’ve been thinking about the email he sent. Why didn’t he call me? Why did he choose to send an email instead? He is planning to meet other girls. He’s making plans to ‘move on’! 10 minutes later Well, fine then. What’s good for Rabbit is good for…well it’s good for me too. He’s moving on? So am i. I just sent him the following email. Dear Rabbit, I received your email. Too bad you weren’t able to call. I guess you’re too busy moving on. Well me too. First of all, I’m basically in discussions with some people. Producer-types you know. They say movie-making is the new story-writing. I’m pretty much on the vanguard of the whole thing.

hen you think a relationship should be a certain way, and yours isn’t, frustration sets in and frustration is the number one thing that eats away at a relationship. That’s why it’s so critical to burst the below misconceptions. So without further ado, here are eight myths about relationships that might surprise you.

1. Myth: A good relationship

means that you don’t have to work at it. Fact: The strongest most enduring relationships take lots of hard work. Our culture, education system and parenting styles don’t prepare us for the fact that even good relationships take effort. A healthy relationship is like a good garden. It’s a beautiful thing but you wouldn’t expect it to thrive without a whole lot of labor. But how do you know if you’re working too hard on a relationship? One sign is when you begin to feel more unhappy than happy. In other words, are you spending more time tending the relationship and keeping it afloat than enjoying it? This unhappiness becomes less of a rough patch, and more like the normal state of affairs. Another bad sign is if you’re trying hard to make improvements and changes, but you don’t see the same level of effort on your partner’s part. There has to be some sense of ‘we’re trying really hard, both making changes and that’s making a difference. On the flip side, if both of you are trying and you can see positive changes being made at least some of the time, then that’s a good sign.

2. Myth: If partners really

love each other, they know each other’s needs and feelings. Fact: It’s a setup to expect your partner to be able to read your mind, because when you anticipate that your partner will know your wants, that’s essentially what you’re doing. We develop this expectation as kids, but as adults, we’re always responsible for communicating our feelings and needs. And once you’ve communicated your needs and feelings, a better measure of the quality of your relationship is whether your partner actually listens to your words.

3. Myth: If you’re truly in

love, passion will never fade. Fact: We assume that if we genuinely love someone, the passion, urging and loving never goes away and if they wane or disappear, then it is

8 Surprising Myths About Relationships

either not the right relationship or the relationship [must be] in trouble. However, passion naturally diminishes in all relationships. Daily routines are one of the culprits. As their responsibilities grow and roles expand, both parties have less and less time and energy for each other. But this doesn’t mean that the passion is gone for good. With a little planning and playfulness, you can boost passion. I see many relationships where passion is alive and well. I will like to emphasize the importance of couples doing new things to perk up their relationships. And when it comes to passion-squashing routines, I suggest that the two lovers ask themselves: “How do we tame our lives sufficiently that we can make time for each other and have energy left for each other?

relationships is not resolving your fights. Fights can be really healthy, and an important form of communication and clearing the air. Also, the type of fight lovers have plays a role. Not surprisingly, nasty, scornful or condescending fights that leave the couple unable to resolve and make then not to be on talking terms for days can damage the relationship.

7. Myth: In order for the re-

lationship to be successful, the other partner must change. Fact: Many times we’re very good at the blame game and not so good at pondering how we can become better partners. Instead, we demand that our partners make such and such changes. Unless, there are extreme circumstances like abuse or chronic infidelity, it takes

two to make changes. But even more than that, it’s up to you to figure out what you can do.

8. Myth: Lovers therapy

means your relationship is really in trouble. Fact: By the time lovers seek therapy, this may be true, but changing this mindset is key. Most lovers seek therapy when they’ve been suffering for a really long time, and by this time, whatever elements that were still good in the relationship are almost already destroyed. Instead, people should view lovers’ therapy as preventive. This way, lovers comes in when they’ve been stuck on one or two conflicts for a few months, not after a very long time when things may already be very difficult to resolve.

4. Myth: Having sex will

strengthen your relationship. Fact: Studies have shown that relationship happiness actually decreases with every sex. This doesn’t mean that you start loving each other less or that you won’t bond at all over your sex, but the mounting challenges can complicate relationships. Having realistic expectations helps lovers prepare themselves for their new roles. When you think that sex will improve your relationship, it only adds to the complications.

5. Myth: Jealousy is a sign of

true love and caring. Fact: Jealousy is more about how secure and confident you are with yourself and your relationship (or the lack thereof). Take the following example: If you have a jealous partner, you might try to show them how much you care so they don’t get jealous. But you soon realize that any amount of caring isn’t a cure for their jealous reactions. While you can be supportive, your partner must work on their insecurity issues on their own. No matter what you do, you can’t make your partner feel more secure or change their self-confidence. Trying to make your partner jealous can also backfire. While guys and ladies are just as likely to experience jealousy, their reactions differ. Guys either get very defensive or angry, believing that the relationship isn’t worth it. Ladies, on the other hand, respond by trying to improve the relationship or themselves.

6. Myth: Fights ruin relationships.

Fact: In actuality, what ruins

We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly. It took years for me to realize a relationship is not a romance movie, at some point in our lives, we may believe that love should be like the kind of romance we see portrayed in films, television, and novels. I grew up and learned to let go of the crazy metaphor of romantic love in order to find true happiness. Yes, I was disappointed to realize that the knight riding through the night to save the damsel in distress is a fallacy. It’s a bummer. But, let’s look at it in this light: We all saw Romeo and Juliet and Titanic. Why stories like these make our hearts sing is that the love is unrequited. Unavailability fuels the romantic expression. This kind of romantic story can only work when there is an absence of the lover. Sometimes, they have to die in the end in order for their love to fit into this romantic view. Or, we eat handfuls of popcorn, wait-

ing to see if they live happily ever after, and we rarely find out if they really do. The romantic love fantasy is really a substitute for intimacy - real, connected, vulnerable intimacy. So then, how do we make relationships work and stay happy? We begin with the understanding of what pure love is, and then redefine and update the romantic fairytale into a healthier type of love. Here are some ways to create true intimacy, find pure love, and be truly happy in your relationship: See your partner for who he or she really is, be willing to learn from each other, get comfortable being alone, look closely at why a fight may begin, own who you are, embrace ordinariness, expand your heart, focus on giving love, let go of expectations. Giving your relationship what it needs to thrive is a truly loving gesture. Make the effort. You are both worth it.

Sports Adebayo part 2: Brother steals Zidane and Vivian Foe shirts

Mali’s withdrawal a blessing and curse: Coach Edwin Okon

Encomiums are poured on Gebrselassie after retirement announcement

P S

uper Falcons coach Edwin Okon says the withdrawal of Mali from their Olympic qualifying games has a positive as well as negative effect on his team’s preparations for the World Cup. The Malians were drawn to face Nigeria’s Falcons in a 1st round qualifying fixture for the female football event of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, but about 48 hours to the 1st leg in Abuja last Saturday the away

team wrote to FIFA to confirm their withdrawal from the pairing. Coach Okon in an exclusive chat with PH Microscope said as much as Mali’s withdrawal from the draw has given the Falcons an easy passage to the 3rd round of the qualifying series, it’s not that perfect a situation as it has deprived his team the opportunity of getting a competitive test as they continue preparations for next month’s

FIFA Women’s World Cup. “it is a plus to us because we didn’t kick a ball to qualify for the next round, but it is a minus to us because we wanted to use the match to assess the players based on what is at stake. So that’s why I say it’s a plus but is a minus to us too” he disclosed. Meanwhile in a new development the Nigeria Football Fed-

eration are said to be trying to line up a few friendly matches for the team against the likes of Cameroun and Ivory Coast before the leave Nigeria for Canada, the Country that will host the World Cup from June 6. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been drawn in Group D alongside USA, Sweden and Australia.

raises are being showered from far and wide on Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie after he announced his retirement on Sunday. One of such has come from women’s marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe. The British star eulogized Gebrselassie as a remarkable competitor who’s given so much to the sport. “A great athlete,a great competitor but a wonderful human being. Thank you Haile” Radcliffe posted on her twitter

handle. Gebrselassie remains the world record holder at 20,000m and the one-hour race. The 42-year-old Ethiopian confirmed his decision after finishing 16th in theGreat Manchester Run on Sunday. It brings to an end a 25-year career in which he claimed two Olympic gold medals, eight World Championship victories and set 27 world records.

During his career he has topped the world rankings for a record 683 weeks but is now slipping down the table quickly. In March of this year he fell outside the top 100 for the first time since the week before he claimed his first PGA Tour title during the Fall of 1996.

Marriage doing the magic for Andy Murray

A

ndy Murray wrote ‘marriage works’ on the camera after beating Rafael Nadal in the Madrid Open final. The 28 year old British number one has continued his incredible run of form since marrying Kim Sears in Dunblane last month, taking his un-

beaten streak to nine matches. Murray has now secured two consecutive titles on the red dirt since the wedding, having never previously won on the surface, and his comprehensive 6-3 6-2 win over Nadal was as unexpected as it was stunning.

Murray, who punched the air in delight after beating the ‘King of Clay’, proceeded to mark his improbable triumph in Madrid by signing the on-court TV camera, accompanied by the message ‘marriage works’. Among the “top four” tennis players of this era Rafael Nadal

is the only one who’s yet to be married, as world number one Novak Djokovic got married in July 2014 with 17 time grand slam winner Roger Federer tying the nuptial knots in April 2009.

Golden League to start in Port Harcourt

A

thletics Federation of Nigeria Secretary general Olumide Bamiduro says the Golden league season is set to kick off across the country in just over a week time, as plans continue to ensure the nation’s athletes have healthy competition to put them in shape for international championships. This will start a very busy season for top athletes as it builds up towards the National Athletics Championship in Calabar in July before the World Athletics Championship in Beijing in August then the All Africa Games in Brazzaville in September. The secretary general revealed to PH Microscope that the Golden league series will start in Port Harcourt on the 23rd of May with others to hold

in Benin, Ife, Akure and some more Cities. “Our Golden league will commence in Port Harcourt on the 23rd of May and there after we have another one in Benin, there’s another one in Ife and there’s another one in Akure. These are the programmes that we have put in place to ensure that this athletes are physically fit and we’ll use it to select the best athletes that will represent the country and do the nation proud” he said. Two weeks ago Nigeria emerged as the only African country to win a gold medal in the World Relays in Bahamas, achieving the success in the women’s 4 x 200 metres race.

I

t has now been confirmed that Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Bayelsa United have sacked their head coach, Solomon Ogbeide. Ogbeide parted ways with the club after an emergency meeting by the management. The experienced trainer was axed along with his assistant, and they have both been re-

placed temporarily with George Ederekumoh and Samke Nyanabofa. The erstwhile Warri Wolves gaffer becomes the first coach that will be sacked this term in Nigeria’s top flight. Bayelsa United currently occupy the 19th position on the league table after getting only seven points from eight games this season in the NPFL.

brother. Adebayor also claimed Rotimi stole and sold a necklace worth €45,000 (£32,000). The former Arsenal forward wrote: “In 2002, I went to play the AFCON in Mali and I had the huge privilege to swap my shirt with Marc-Vivien Foe. May his soul rest in peace. “When I got back to Togo, I put that shirt in a secure place. My brother found a way to steal that shirt and sold it.

The 19-year-old posted photos of himself at Chelsea’s training ground, including one of him putting pen to paper on a contract, though the Blues have yet to announce the deal. Nathan drew attention with his play for Brazilan club Atletico Paranaense, and has also played for his native country’s under-20 squad. Multiple outlets valued the

transfer at £4.5 million, though Nathan’s work permit will still need to be approved by the Home Office. “A dream is coming true! First of all I want to thank God for always lighting my way, my dad who always believed in my talent and was a real warrior while helping me to reach my goals, my family and friends who always supported me,” Nathan wrote on Instagram.

O

n the 3rd of May 2015 Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 1-0, a victory that did not only give them maximum 3 points but also ensured the London club secured a fifth premier league title in their history. The only goal of that game was scored by Eden Hazard in the 45th minute but much more of those had to come from squad members since August 2014 when the league kicked off to ensure “The Blues” emerged as 2014/2015 Champions of England. The title was confirmed with 3 matches to go a feat that was also achieved in Jose Mourinho’s first spell at the team in 2005. They have led the EPL table since day one of the 2014-15 season having the highest goal difference and scoring the second highest number of goals in the league after Manchester City with six of their players being part of the PFA Team of the Year. Just before resumption of the season Mourinho realised that winning the title won’t be possible unless they have a world class centre-forward. So among a host of other signings he got in Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid and Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, two stars who will eventually play a major part in giving them a first Premier League title in 5 years. Fabregas has so far provided 18 assists with Diego Costa scoring 19 goals. If we have to sum up Chelsea’s performance in two words, it would be “well executed”. Mourinho knew what his team is capable of, what their strong points are and where they lack when compared to

other teams in England. At the start of the season, the Blues were playing attacking football that required having more possession of the ball and making more passes, but when Mourinho realised that his players were getting exhausted, he went back to his defensive style of play. The ‘Mourinho defence’ required all his players to know what to do when in possession of the ball or when the opposition is in the possession of the ball. So despite the accusations of the team being “boring champions” I would go with the argu-

part in the run too, little wonder he’s been named both the PFA and Football Writers’ Association player of the season. Captain John Terry had one of his best seasons since he joined the club. He has also become highest goal-scoring defender in EPL history after he scored his 39th goal in the league in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge, not forgetting Nemanja Matic whose consistency in the defensive midfield position gave the club stability at the centre with great contributions also from the

ment that Coach Jose Mourinho basically knew the right tactics to deploy at any particular time of the season. As we look back at players who had the biggest influence in leading the team to the championship, it would not be an over statement to note that Mourinho’s winning mentality and tactical influence was the most important factor in the team’s success. Eden Hazard with 14 goals and 8 assists so far played a major

likes of Branislav Ivanovic and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. One other factor that was crucial in the Blues winning the championship was their ability to grind out results in tough matches. They have made brilliant comebacks and have not lost two consecutive matches in the League throughout the season. Even a 5-3 thrashing by Spurs on the New Year’s Day didn’t bog them down and Jose’s team took it as one bad

game in an otherwise fruitful season. The only thing that made this season “dull” was perhaps the lack of serious challenge Chelsea got from their opponents. The fact that their EPL rivals have not been able to beat them for more than four months tells how ridiculous it is to call them boring and not worthy champions. They were given a good fight by Manchester City and they came very close to leapfrogging the Blues for the top spot. But City couldn’t maintain their form. Their underperforming midfielders and injury to Sergio Aguero further deteriorated their chances. Arsenal picked up their game in the later half of the season and became No. 2 but they never really challenged their north-London rivals. Manchester United and Liverpool were never really genuine title challengers for this season. In all the dominant way with which Chelsea won the 2014/2015 EPL title should put shivers down the spines of rivals as we look towards next season. They’ve now been top of the Premier League table for over 261 days and when the season ends on May 24, they will break Manchester United’s 1993-94 record of staying top for 262 days. All I can say at this stage is to share a line from the club’s anthem “Blue is the colour, football is the game, we are all together and winning is our aim. So cheers us up through the sun and rain cos Chelsea is our name”. Congrats to the Blues let’s see what next season’s competition would throw at you guys.
