NDIS Basics Description of the NDIS The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support to people with disability, their families and carers. • It is jointly supported and funded by the Australian Government and State and Territory Governments. • NDIS is an individualised package of support to eligible people with disability. • Goals are achieved through individual skill development but also through helping people with a disability to: access mainstream services, such as health, housing, education and employment access community services, such as sports clubs and libraries and maintain informal supports, such as family and friends (National Disability Insurance Agency [NDIA], 2018). •

NDIS Basics Why the change to the NDIS? •
Choice and control are the fundamental principles of the NDIS, which represents a break from previous welfare approaches.
•
The scheme aims to empower people with a disability to use funds given to them to purchase services that reflect their lifestyle and aspirations.
•
This is the culmination of society’s evolution towards respecting, protecting and ensuring the rights of people with a disability.
•
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the only national scheme of its kind in the world (Ramcharan, 2016).

NDIS Basics Why do we need the NDIS? •
It is a national system to provide individualised support to anyone born with a disability or anyone who acquires one later in life.
•
To enable people with a disability and their families and carers to participate in the social, economic, and cultural life of Australia with the supports and programs they choose.
•
To provide people with a disability, and their families and carers, with the regular care, support, therapy and equipment they need from a secure and consistent pool of funds for these services and support.
•
To focus on early intervention and delivering supports which produce the best long term outcomes, maximising opportunities for independence, participation and productivity (NDIA, 2018).

NDIS Basics Who is eligible for the NDIS? •
You are eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) if you: are under 65 years of age, and are an Australian citizen or resident or permanent visa holder, and meet the disability or early intervention requirements
•
Eligibility for access to the NDIS will be determined by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
•
