InterPlay is all over the place thanks to you! InterPlay classes, workshops, events, performances, in-services and trainings have brought community, art and health to people from all walks of life. The word is spreading and so is the movement, the sound, the stillness and the silence. InterPlay spreads community, connection, ease and grace all over the place. And it is because of each and every one who has taken on InterPlay as something important in their lives and then shared it with another or just lived it. So many of you have also contributed to InterPlay financially—a third of the budget is supported by contributions. For all the ways that you have helped take InterPlay “all over the place”—thank you!

Janet Jones
I led a group of twenty decision leaders at an off-site biotech day-summit in the InterPlay form “Walking, Stopping, Running.” In the walking portion, I noticed they began to walk arm-in-arm with one another. At a site employee event, I led a group of seventy employees in babbling where scientists, engineers and executives had several babbling topics some of which were “first job,” “your last boss,” and “how did you get here.” This initiated much engagement, laughter and longer conversations after the event was over. At the year-end party, I had a band of seven musicians playing—guitar, drums, fiddle, saxophone and keyboard with four singers. We took words from the employee audience, put on dark sunglasses and made up a blues song on the spot!
Jonathan Leavy Grace is an elderly, demented woman who smiles but can no longer speak or walk on her own and lives in a lovely, locked memory unit where I serve as a hospice chaplain. After many visits, I learned that movement and facial expressions along with singing music seemed to reach her most effectively. One day she was seated in the living room with big band music playing in the background. I started a hand dance with her, she smiled and soon both hands were doing a 4-handed swing dance. “May I have this dance?” I asked

her. Grace smiled and started to stand up! A staff person helped her from behind while I held her hands and gaze. We danced! We danced across the room in slow incremental steps of joy!
Mary Ellen Lewis A Warrior Mother dancing her soul. Willing to go there—through loss and pain and suffering. Coming out on the other side—freedom from chains and grief.
Jori Martinez-Woods I am a Lyft Driver in Nashville. My Lyft theme is “The Play Lyft: A Den of Creativity.” I have a menu of InterPlay Forms to select from attached to my visor—“One-Hand Dance,” “Seated Warm Up,” “3-Sentence Stories,” “Toning,” “I Can Tell You a Story About.” A new Lyftee says, “OMG is this
really happening? I can’t believe this. This is freaking me out. How can I be having this experience in a cab! This is crazy! This is awesome! How do I get you again? Why can't life always be this fun?” I got a $35 tip off that ride. Woohoo!
Tom Henderson Here’s Dyck (shown below with his wife Lynda)— iconoclastic, irreverent truth teller, a longtime InterPlayer always willing to confront big questions playfully. He has been the student, now a peer, who has taught me more than I have taught him. At our annual New Year’s Untensive for probably the last time, he took the floor on Saturday evening
not to tell a story, but to answer lovingly any questions anyone had about his cancer. A hospice volunteer for probably as long as he has been doing InterPlay, he was under hospice care himself, and he continued to teach me and many others—this time how to approach death with dignity and grace. It was an InterPlay moment, a tender moment, a transforming moment, but not—to me at least—a surprising moment, given the community that InterPlay creates.
Anita Bondi I have an ongoing play group that has been meeting Monday nights for the last 20-plus years. About a month ago a woman came in thinking it was a yoga class and decided to stay (in her words), “as the other students were so welcoming.” At the end of the night she proclaimed that she had planned to admit herself to the 6th floor (mental ward) after the “yoga class,” but found renewed hope, joy, and a reason to live all in the span of that 90-minute grace-filled session! And she has been to class every Monday night since then.

Last May I found myself at a meeting in the hills of Chomtong, an hour’s drive from Chiangmai, Thailand, attended by twelve Karean hilltribe men, a Jesuit priest, Fr. Winai Boonlue and a Brother of St. Gabrielle, Br. Anurak Nidhibhadrabhorn. The purpose of the meeting was to begin dialogue about the issues plaguing these men, their families and their communities. I was asked to lead an opening exercise and so I had the men explore the movement of swinging, thrusting, hanging and shaping which led to laughter, full explosive expression, quiet and even tears...and then they told their stories. Powerful!
Soyinka and I have been leading InterPlay for eight weeks at the St. Mary’s Senior Homeless Winter Shelter. By now, 25 mostly African American elders were comfortable warming up, moving on their own, doing rounds of group “I could talk abouts” and noticing the power of play. One week a man exclaimed, “Why can’t we always be like this? All together!”
Jane Siarny I am continually amazed at InterPlay’s unique way of creating safety in community. I witnessed the support of mother to daughter in a cancer center through the noticing process, which gave way to laughter and dancing during a “Walk Stop Run” while pushing her in a wheelchair.
Jennifer Denning The women at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, Georgia, reported feeling grace when they shared their stories of a time someone created grace for them; but perhaps the real power came when they then shared stories of a time they created grace for someone else. As one participant said, “I hadn’t thought of myself as a grace maker before.” The exercise led to a beautiful discussion about the ways they could create grace for one another despite the confines of the prison.
Billy Amoss He came to the InterPlay men’s retreat because his wife asked him to. He came and played and was broken open, witnessed by his tears. He said he didn’t know he needed that—and was full of gratitude that he and his wife could now have InterPlay together.

ow does InterPlay affect us?
On a survey taken after a single InterPlay class or event, participants were asked to describe in one word what they were experiencing at the moment. This “wordle� was created from 384 responses. The larger words indicate their more frequent use.
A
measurable impact
One of the projects that contributions have helped support during 2013 is a major initiative called the InterPlay Proof Project. We are collecting data about the effects of doing InterPlay both in the short- and long-term. In 2013, an evaluation tool to measure the effects of short-term InterPlay experience was finalized and distributed throughout the community of InterPlay leaders. While we continue to collect data, we have some initial results from the first round of forms that have been returned.

We asked participants to indicate on a seven-point scale how truly certain statements described their personal experience after an InterPlay class (“7” indicated “very true”, “1” indicated “not true”).

The chart at the right shows the percentage of people who responded to the statement with either a “7” or “6,” both of which indicate a strong agreement with the statement.

nterPlay finances 2013
What does it cost to run a global InterPlay movement for a year?
InterPlay’s expenses during 2013 were under $400,000. Not bad, considering we have five part-time staff (Cynthia, Phil, Theron, Stephanie and Lucia) supporting InterPlay activities in 60 cities on 6 continents! Check out the pie charts below to see the broad strokes of InterPlay’s income and expenses for 2013.
Creating InterPlayce, the building in downtown Oakland which InterPlay folks sometimes refer to as the “mothership,” has been a long-term process. It began with the purchase of the building in the year 2000 and has included construction of a dance studio, earthquake retrofits, the clean-up and remodeling of all five apartments in the building and a condominium conversion. Our ability to make this work financially would not have been possible without the creativity and generosity of Randy Newswanger. He served on the Body Wisdom Board, made personal loans to enable the renovation, and gave countless hours of his time working on the finances of the building.

In 2013 we were able to pay off our remaining construction loans, including final payments to Randy, by selling one of the condominiums. This also explains the one-time income event reflected in the chart below. Thank you Randy! The condo is now owned by Pittsburgh InterPlayer and current Body Wisdom Board President Sheila Collins and her husband, Rich Citrin, so it is staying “in the family”!
