Murtha Seat Election Primary Day
(Cont. From Page 4) commemoration of Black History Month this week. The Senator’s events included delivering a floor statement; convening a symposium with panelists including Congresswoman Diane E. Watson, former Senator Harris Wofford, Ofield Dukes and Paul E. Waters, Esq.; and hosting a reception to honor Tucker’s achievements. Tucker was a devoted champion of civil and women's rights. In 1971, she became the Pennsylvania Secretary of the Commonwealth, the first female African American in the nation to serve in such a position. As Secretary, she instituted the
first Commission on the Status of Women in Pennsylvania and was a strong advocate urging Pennsylvania to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Tucker played a critical role within the civil-rights movement. She participated in the Selma-to-Montgomery March with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well the White House Conference on Civil Rights. Tucker’s legacy as a crusader for equality has lived on in the organizations she founded: the National Political Congress of Black Women, the Martin Luther King Association for Nonviolence and the Bethune-DuBois Institute.

High school seniors and others who wish to attend college this fall should begin the financial aid application process now. The deadline for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine eligibility for a Pennsylvania State Grant, and other grants, loans, and scholarships is May 1, but students can begin filing applications now. The FAFSA is used to determine if students qualify for many types of need-based financial aid. Families can access the 2010-11 FAFSA and seek assistance completing the FAFSA online (http://www.pheaa.org/). Lancaster, Chester County Dems Support Joe Sestak

Election Date Set For Murtha’s Seat Gov. Ed Rendell has set the date for a special election to fill the late Congressman John Murtha, to coincide with the May 18 primary. “Last week, the Governor said he was inclined to hold the election on the primary date to save taxpayers money, but that he would check with House leadership to make sure no critical votes would be hurt,” said Rendell's spokesman, Gary Tuma. As of press time, no caucus vote was reported concerning his replacement on the Democrat side. However, a retired US Army Lieu-
tenant Colonel, William Russell, said he will seek to be the Republican candidate for the nomination for Representative in the 12th Pennsylvania Congressional Dist. “Since the Governor has announced the Special Election will be held on Primary day, May 18,” said Russell, “it makes perfect sense to also be a candidate in the special election. It’s a move that makes sense for the voters and will simplify the process for the thousands of my supporters.” Russell has now officially resumed his primary campaign and will also unveil a newly designed web site at www.russellbrigade.com, within the next few days.
