It’s hard to believe that a year has already gone by since I joined the Port of Los Angeles. During this time, I’ve had an opportunity to meet and work with so many committed community groups and individuals, and I look forward to doing more of that in the months ahead. I’m pleased to report that we’ve made significant progress to resolve the cargo congestion issue, an unprecedented challenge for the Port and the maritime industry. I have often referred to the situation as a “perfect storm” – bigger ships calling on the Port, shipping lines forming alliances and dislocated truck chassis or trailers to transport goods. Contract labor negotiations all along the West Coast earlier in the year further compounded the matter. But working together with our Port partners, we’ve successfully put into place a number of solutions that will serve us now and in the long-term to keep our cargo flow on track. These new programs will also improve the Port’s future competitiveness and help boost our local economy, jobs and economic growth. Improvements along the LA Waterfront also continue to be a focus for the Port, as our shoreline grows in popularity as both a local and visitor destination. After a number of public input meetings this past year, the Board of Harbor Commissioners officially approved a Public Access Investment Plan. This was created to better guide and coordinate public-serving programs and projects, including those benefiting the LA Waterfront. To keep momentum going, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti also appointed a citywide panel to explore how other city department resources might be used to help in the future for LA Waterfront improvements. As we gear up for another eventful summer, we invite you and your family to take advantage of the many upcoming free events along the LA Waterfront. Many favorites will be back to enjoy, including free concerts and movies, the 7th Annual Cars & Stripes Forever! celebration, and Navy Days in August. Be sure and explore all our upcoming summer events on pages 6 and 7 of this issue. It’s a great honor and privilege to work for the Port of Los Angeles, and to be part of such a great community. Here’s to another great summer of fun and community-building events along the LA Waterfront!

A PORT PRIORITY - INVESTING IN COMMUNITY High school freshman Regina Rojas had never stepped foot on a boat, much less knew anything about sailing or life at sea. But that all changed nine years ago when she became involved in the Cabrillo Beach Youth Sailing Club, a local all-volunteer, non-profit program established in 2000. The program teaches youth in the community how to sail, while imparting lots of life lessons and problem-solving skills along the way. For sailing program participant Rojas, these life lessons and a passion for the sea soon took firm root, inspiring something she never expected: a career. A recent graduate of the California Maritime Academy, who now works in operations for shipping giant Hamburg Sud, Rojas credits the program with giving her a new opportunity, direction and focus. “I have seen this program change high school students’ lives,” she says. The Cabrillo Beach Youth Sailing Club is just one of many organizations that have received financial support from the Port of Los Angeles through its Community Investment Grant Program, which annually awards up to $1 million in non-taxpayer funded grants to support local programs and events benefiting Los Angeles Harbor communities. Grants awarded under the program focus on initiatives that provide Port or maritime-related education and training, address impacts of Port operations on surrounding communities, promote the LA Waterfront as a place to visit, or encourage sustainable practices that preserve and conserve natural resources in our harbor environment. Grants are made available in three categories: small grants of $5,000 or less; medium grants between $5,001 and $99,999; and large grants of $100,000 or more. During its debut in 2014, the Community Investment Grant Program funded 53 different programs, projects and events. Grant recipients included educational institutions, like the Port of Los Angeles High School for its International Business and Maritime
Studies Program, as well as organizations focused on protecting the local environment, such as Clean San Pedro or Pacific Unicomm’s “Clean Wilmington.” Initiatives that promote the LA Waterfront also received support, such as a new documentary about the LA Waterfront and cultural events like the Fiesta Corazon del Puerto. “Our Port Community Investment Grant Program helps dozens of local organizations to have a positive and lasting impact on our neighboring communities, including San Pedro, Wilmington and Harbor City/Harbor Gateway,” said Ambassador Vilma Martinez, President of the Los Angeles Harbor Commission. “Our Port Community Investment Grant Program helps dozens of local organizations to have a positive and lasting impact on our neighboring communities, including San Pedro, Wilmington and Harbor City/Harbor Gateway.” – Ambassador Vilma Martinez President Los Angeles Harbor Commission
In addition, and as part of a separate Port Community Mitigation Trust Fund administered by the Harbor Community Benefit Foundation, another $350,000 in grants was approved this past March to support local community programs benefiting the San Pedro and Wilmington communities. The majority of grants awarded funded new projects under the Harbor Schools Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) Initiative, helping expose more students to educational topics and career opportunities in marine, maritime and port-related areas. The Port has now funded $3.3 million in local projects and programs through the Foundation.

L.A. MARITIME MUSEUM BRINGS PORT HISTORY TO LIFE
If you’ve ever wondered about how the Los Angeles Harbor community and port came to be, you don’t need to go far to find out – and have an enjoyable and entertaining time doing it.

Just plan a visit to the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, a local gem of history featuring dozens of exhibits and attractions that appeal to visitors of all ages. Located in the heart of San Pedro at the foot of 6th Street and Harbor Boulevard, the Museum is housed in the beautifully restored Municipal Ferry Building, built in 1941 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Even the Ferry Building is reminiscent of a time not so long ago when it served as a working auto ferry terminal, transporting Navy personnel, fishing industry employees and shipyard workers across the channel to Terminal Island before the Vincent Thomas Bridge was built. Situated on the Port's Main Channel, the building’s “Streamlined Moderne”-style and fivestory octagonal tower add charm and a step-back-in-time experience to the museum’s many exhibits and attractions. “The museum gives you a front-row seat to the busiest port in the country,” says Los Angeles Maritime Museum Director Marifrances Trivelli. “Because the port’s history is so multifaceted and unique, there’s always something new and different to see each time you come here.” Documenting harbor life from the turn of the 20th Century to modern times, visitors to the museum can explore life at sea, as well as the day-to-day life of the hard-working men and women who built the Los Angeles Harbor community.“You don’t have to be a famous person to have shaped the history of the port,” Trivelli added.

EXHIBITS FOR EVERYONE Visitors to the museum can enjoy model ship displays and early maritime equipment and artifacts located throughout the first and second floors. Some of the most popular exhibits and attractions include: New Children’s Exhibit – Themed “What’s Going on in the Harbor Today?,” this all-new permanent Children’s Exhibit opened last September and has been very popular with kids ever since. The exhibit is designed to look like a ship, complete with portholes, perches and pint-size binoculars for real-time ship spotting. The second-floor exhibit overlooking the Harbor also features many hands-on, “low tech interactives” like dress-up costumes, building blocks and toys to spark imagination and play. Design of the locally built exhibit was made possible with funding from the Port’s Community Investment Grant Program.
gear and rare diving equipment. Renowned diver Torrance Parker curated the exhibit using material collected during his career. The exhibit highlights the dramatic growth of deep sea diving in the 20th century, from shipwreck exploration to the invention of underwater photography.
A MUSEUM AND MORE Always a popular destination for school field trips, the museum hosts more up to 15,000 students each year. The school groups come mostly in the spring months, making summer a great time to visit and the best way to take full advantage of all that the museum and the LA Waterfront have to offer.
The Tattoos & Scrimshaw: The Art of the Sailor” Exhibit – On display through December 2015, this temporary exhibit explores how early contact between British sailors and the Tahitian people brought forth the origins of Western tattooing culture, and how sailors used tattoos to document their own histories. Visitors can learn what different tattoos signified, based on a sailor’s position and travels around the world. A local San Pedro tattoo artist is also featured. “What people don’t realize is that though tattoos are very common today, there was a maritime genesis to the art, dating back to the days of Captain Cook,” according to Trivelli. Caught, Canned and Eaten – A History of San Pedro’s Fishing Industry Exhibit - San Pedro was the fishing capital of the nation for much of the 20th century. Generations of fishermen sold catches of tuna, sardines, mackerel, and squid to fish markets or canneries on nearby Terminal Island. Today, the fishing fleet is greatly diminished and the canneries have closed, but the legacy of the fishing and canning industries – and even the iconic “Charlie the Tuna” and “Chicken of the Sea” mermaid characters – endures in this fascinating, historical exhibit. 20,000 Jobs Under the Sea – This popular commercial diving exhibit is a life-size diorama, with displays of authentic hard-hat
The museum’s location at the front door of the new Downtown Harbor Plaza also makes it an ideal starting point for an entire day of fun on the LA Waterfront. Just a quick stroll down the promenade, visitors will find several memorials, including the US Navy Heavy Cruiser LOS ANGELES, the Fishing Industry Memorial, the Bloody Thursday Monument, and the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial. Es difícil creer que ya ha pasado un año desde que me uní al Puerto de Los Ángeles. UNA PRIORIDAD DEL PUERTO - INVERTIR EN LA COMUNIDAD La estudiante de primer año de escuela secundaria Regina Rojas nunca había puesto un pie en un barco, y mucho menos sabía nada acerca de la navegación o la vida en el mar. Pero todo eso cambió hace nueve años cuando se involucró en el Cabrillo Beach Youth Sailing Club, un programa sin fines de lucro local de voluntarios fundado en el año 2000. El programa enseña a los jóvenes en la comunidad cómo navegar, mientras que imparte muchas lecciones de vida y habilidades de resolución de problemas. Para la participante del programa de navegación Rojas, estas lecciones de vida y una pasión por el mar pronto echó raíces firmes, inspirando algo que nunca esperaba: una carrera. Además, y como parte de un Fondo Fiduciario separado de mitigación a la Comunidad del Puerto administrado por la Fundación Harbor Community Benefit Foundation, se aprobaron otros $350.000 en subvenciones en marzo pasado para apoyar los programas de la comunidad local que benefician a las comunidades de San Pedro y Wilmington. Sábado, 20 de junio / 6-9:30 p.m. Concierto en el agua Domingo, 7, 14, 21 & 28 de junio / Del medio día - 5 p.m. Conciertos del Mar Disfrute de música en vivo, comida y más cada domingo de junio en Downton Harbor (el centro del Puerto) (en Harbor Blvd. entre Calles 5a y 6a (5th and 6th Streets) en San Pedro, al lado de Los Angeles Maritime Museum).
El primer concierto en el agua en Wilmington, el evento cuenta con actividades de diversión familiar, además de música en vivo de su Mariachi favorito Divas con entretenimiento proporcionado por Ballet Folklórico Sol de México en Banning’s Landing Community Center, 100 E. Water Street en Wilmington.

Wilmington Grade Separation Bridge Opens to Public The South Wilmington Grade Separation Bridge, a 4,100-foot-long structure linking Harry Bridges Boulevard to Pier A Street and Fries Avenue in Wilmington, is now open to all vehicular traffic, in an area heavily used by pedestrians, truckers and Port commuters. The South Wilmington Grade Separation Bridge eliminates the conflict between vehicular traffic and two railroad crossings along Fries Avenue and Avalon Boulevard, and provides uninterrupted vehicular access to the South Wilmington area. The bridge is accessible from Harry Bridges Boulevard, Fries Avenue, and North Access Road (formerly Neptune Avenue).
NEWS AT THE PORT LA Waterfront Webcam Up and Running The Port of Los Angeles recently installed a live camera at Downtown Harbor, in the heart of the LA Waterfront. See it for yourself online at lawaterfront. org. Grab a front row seat and claim the best view of the LA Waterfront, right from the comfort of your own screen. Watch along as massive container and cruise ships pass through the Main Channel, view the Vincent Thomas Bridge lights at night, witness marine wildlife, and look at the weather change in an instant. It reminds me of the time I served on the USS Saint Paul, a heavy cruiser.” -Tom H., Saginaw, MI Port of Los Angeles Expands Marina Engine Exchange Program to include Alternative Fuel and Electric Motors As part of its ongoing commitment to improve air quality in the local area, the Port of Los Angeles has revitalized and expanded its existing Marina Engine Exchange Program to include all-electric and alternatively fuelled motors. Originally introduced in 2012, the program provides funding (up to $3,000) for local boat owners to upgrade older, highly polluting motors with California Air Resources Board (CARB) three-star certified ultra-low emission motors. In order to qualify, an applicant’s boat must have an operational, two-stroke outboard motor no greater than 20 horsepower and be located in a Port of Los Angeles marina. The old motor will be replaced with an approximate equivalent horsepower rating (up to 15 horsepower). Upon engine replacement, the boat must remain in a Port of Los Angeles marina for at least one year.
